  • If you think we have this whole life thing figured out, don’t let us fool you! We constantly feel like we’re never getting enough done, that we’re falling behind, and that life is moving too quickly. Anyone else feel like it’s a struggle to find balance in life?
In this episode, we arrive in Marathon with high expectations of finishing our bimini within a couple weeks. No surprise, it ends up taking a lot longer than we originally anticipated. But there’s not much point in beating ourselves up about it, is there… It’s a lesson we seem to be learning over and over again.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Lauren & Kirk
NOTE: This was filmed well before COVID-19 was an issue. We'll discuss the timing of our videos soon in a future episode. Stay safe out there!

Kirk it sounds hokey but stop worrying! MAKE A CHECK LIST. Leaving the sailboat list , Going fishing list, going diving list, or going whatever. My wife and I had to go back and start over so many times we finally made a check off list. Then it became simple and even fun. We stopped forgetting and howling at each other.
    Fishing license
    Reels & rods
    Bait
    Ice
    Depth sounder
    Etc etc etc
    Leaving the boat
    Close at thru hulls
    Close propane
    Lock the hatch
    Etc etc etc.
    It stops that nervousness!!!

It seems to me that to do the kind of cruising that you are doing, you really have to like your partner(s). To do it well, you need to have one of those top 10% relationships based on a real friendship that is many times void in marriages or other loving arrangements, sadly. You've displayed that from day one in your videos. You work really well together on projects, which is rare, and have fun and laugh! I get that these videos are just a slice of your life and edited, but seems you two have that kind of relationship. I think that is one reason I support you guys and why I love and look forward to your videos. I only have that king of relationship with my dog...and he gets sea sick...

I think network TV should watch this series. They will find out they don't have to make fake drama or fake events to get people to watch. They can just be like Lauren and Kirk and share human experiences, triumphs and failures, and take us to places we will probably never be able to see. This channel is better than anything on TV. Please keep doing exactly what you are doing.

Hate to break it to you but major boat projects never end. Just when you think you have gotten to the end, the first projects completed are ready for another go around. Just the way it is and part of the rhythm of boat life. I like to always have parts on hand for projects 2-3 years in the future just in case I need to get to them sooner. Enjoy and stay safe.

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  4 года назад

2-3 years in advance? Seems a little excessive unless you are WAY off the beaten path for the duration. Commercial businesses do a better job at preserving and warehousing parts than our boat does. Why go through the trouble?

You have some awesome sewing skills. I have made my own Bimini and enclosure once. I left my boat with a pro and he had a heart attack while working on it the first season. The next season I dropped it off he said he was doing great....he had a heart attack and died while working on my boat that year. I ended up finding a commercial machine on Craigslist and completed the task myself. A year or two later I sold the boat and the coast guard came knocking on my door. The guy that bought it hadn't transferred it into his name yet when he was out at night and was ran over and killed by a barge in the Columbia River (the guy was alone but he purchased the boat it was so he could take his wife out fishing and she would have nice warm cabin). For us, it was one of the most trouble free enjoyable boats we ever owned:)

That boat was a killer. It sounds like you are lucky to be alive. About 30 years ago a couple in their 35' sailboat was anchored outside of the channel of the Intercoastal Waterway near Gulfport, Ms. During the night a barge tow wandered outside of the channel and unknowingly ran over the sailboat, burying them in the soft bottom. A year later a shrimper got his net tangled in the sailboat's rigging. When they pulled the boat up, the couple was still inside.

I have called anchors various things over the years but nothing that bears repeating! Oh and you are never “done” with boat projects. There will always be something than comes up, besides given your habit of DIY, which is a good thing, you will want to upgrade things as you go along in your boat life. That is one of the biggest draws to the lifestyle. Sure cruising and seeing things is part of it too but it’s the mix that keeps you sane. I imagine videoing and editing can be a drain tho.

The "rhythm" in cruising is work. Especially on an older sailboat. You tinker with the boat all day and then on top of that, you survive also. My parents did it for almost a decade in the Sea of Cortez on an 84 Tayana 42'. They were always doing something to the boat. Not always major stuff, but something. Mom went to church every Sunday and Dad would go have lunch and a cocktail. That was their rhythm.

..... laughing .... not a live-a-board, or a boat owner ... I think it is very basic .... priorities and choices determine everything in life .... I don't have time for that, very low on priority list ... I can't not do that daily, very high on the priority list ..... we choose our priorities ...... there is the old phrase, it is not the accomplishment of the goal that makes the person but the process of achieving the goal that makes the person .... how great is that to have a space and a large table like that, had been wondering if the construction was going to take place on the salon table .. the finished product will be excellent as is everything the two of you, Lauren and Kirk, decide, choose to tackle .... upgrading the electrical system comes to mind, one of many projects you have shared with us .... you sure have fab weather ... thx for letting us have a peek into your lives .... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .... have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

Lauren, the rhythm of life aboard Soulianis is dictated by Mother Nature. You plan around weather, wind, current, and tide. Quite often you do the same as me, such as provisioning, maintenance, cooking, cleaning etc, but you do so in exotic locations. Thus, your rhythm when not under sail is to decide what needs to be done tomorrow, weather permitting, or you can be spontaneous and just do what is fun. You['re a cruiser, rhythm is optional. :¬) Webhead USA

Where your mooring lines connect to the snap shackle, you really should have a galvanized thimble in an eye splice.. Even though you have a nice shiny, smooth shackle, you will surprised at how has that line will wear.
For two lines with thimbles, they probably won't fit in that one shackle. Add another shackle for each thimble.
Or, just use a screw pin shackle for the second line to the mooring ball.

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  4 года назад

Good ideas. This was a temporary solution. But as it stands we weren’t even allowed to use the shackle in Marathon anyhow. They have a rule of no metal fittings on their mooring balls eyes.

It’s hard get the perfect life , don’t use clip shackles on moorings only rope it’s quieter and forgiving my new dingy had very heavy seats and alloy floor boards so I made a seat and found a couple of foam under sleeping bag ground lays glued together and it worked well and ginghy is so light for over board launching works well for a soft bottom

Before we got married my wife use to refer to me as her "friend". When I objected she asked what I preferred to be called. I said, "your lover". Glad you got that figured out.

Wow. That water though. Seriously, though all the work you put in is something else entirely.

Wow y'all have come so far with the skills! It's been a fascinating ride for me! I've spent time in boot key harbor, you are at the gatway to the Bahamas! You are my favorite your tube cruising couple. Keep going.

Love the quality and flow of your episodes! What editing software are you using? I am using Power Director and have a bit of a steep learning curve so far? As a fellow Wisconsinite that has moved to FL, things are sure crazy all over and your weekly episodes (along with the mini-series "Yellowstone") sure is a great distraction!

It would have been fun to have included a Learning The Lines cameo. Maybe they could have done a walk through tour of your boat. :)
