How to Slay the Seasickness Monster | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 71

  • This is it! We’re off to The Bahamas…or so we plan. After last minute provisioning, we leave Marathon and set sail to cross the Gulf Stream. Even though we’re making good time, beating to windward takes its toll, and we decide to call an audible. Fortunately, before Lauren loses her breakfast to the fishes, we figure out a new remedy for her seasickness.
    Hope you enjoy!

After the failed solar arch episode a year ago I saw you guys make a cameo in another sailing channel and the Bimini was installed at that time. So I'm guessing this footage is 14 months old. BTW, your season of traveling downriver from up north is one of my favorite sailing channel seasons. I like tropical island post card videos with babes in bikinis but I've lived and worked along the river (dry side of the levee) in New Orleans for a long time and have never gotten to see the Huck Finn perspective like you guys produced. Good job.

Jeff Lovejoy pre the sailing piece they spent the summer up north in Michigan Wisconsin looking for houses etc. then left for Florida and spent a month or so getting the boat ready it’s best guess is likely October - November 2019 timeline. Or maybe the year before, Anyway it doesn’t really make a difference. They do a good job in these videos, It would be nice to have a live stream just to get an update where they are at, But I can understand if they don’t want to share their location.

When not underway, a simple toilet plunger works really well to temporarily seal a thruhull from the outside of the hull if your bottom paint is reasonably smooth and clean. This allows opening the thruhull up from the inside for maintenance and changing sensors without the inevitable geyser.

Hey. I've sailed a little. Decades ago I got to spend time sailing a 50 foot wooden double-ender named Gjoa, in Puget Sound. 1 captain and 10 novices. The 11 of us lived on the boat for a week. It was awesome. So I'd like to see more footage of actual sailing. Also I am a carpenter and a craftsman (and a teacher-- another story) and really enjoy seeing how things work and how you work on them. You guys are quick learners, and good with your hands.
And also too... I am using your videos to help inspire my girlfriend to plan adventures with me. We live 9-5, but take time for hiking, biking, kayaking whenever we can (and I love snow sports) and are looking to get a van, hit the road for various periods of time, and basically do what you're doing, only on land... aaand we are not techies (I'm a boomer, she's gen X) so no chance to do that long-term until retirement. Another point of inspiration is seeing how you work together to decide what you want, make the plans, and carry them out. So thanks for that.
    Peace, and stay safe.

That bimini is looking 'dang spiffy'...good job indeed. Unsurprisingly, you learnt a valuable lesson on 'through-hulls' if they fail and the volume of water that comes in incredibly fast 😱

You are doing a service for people who fantasize about going sailing. Good job of showing the fun and the challenges.
As to the challenges, nobody, including the reputed "cast iron stomach" people are totally immune to motion sickness, but there are multiple things that are helpful in staving it off. As mentioned by a previous comment, ginger, especially in capsule form (health food store), is a good place to start. Other actions include eating a good meal with protein and absolutely no sugary foods or drinks (they give you a sugar "high" and then you tumble into a sugar "low" and that's when you start to get sick). Whole fruit is good. Sort of nature's timed release sugar, since you don't get the sugar until you digest the pulp. Get a good night's sleep. If you are tired, you are more likely to get sick.
I run a participatory sailing charter business, and if people have teenagers, I ask them to not wake their kids up. Let the sleep until they are ready to get up, and go sailing in the afternoon.
Medications tend to make you either sleepy or goofy or both, so, if you have a real problem, there are two kinds of electronic motion sickness wrist bands: one gives you a constant electrical pulse to your ulnar nerves in your wrist; the other has an adjustable pulse, and even if you start to feel ill, you can increase the frequency of the pulse and stop the process.
I had a client who loved to sail, but had such severe motion sickness that he couldn't even ride in a car unless he was driving. He lived in Idaho, and sent me an e-mail about buying two of them for him and his wife. To test it out, they rented a small motor home and drove up into the mountains on switchback roads. He let his wife drive while he went into the back of the RV and he wrapped his legs over the bed, hung upside down and read a book, and did not ever feel even whoozie. Changed his life.
    Happy adventures!

I see Franny already commented. This is Heidi. I get car sick, air sick, and sea sick. Yes, you have to take the meds before you get sick. However, the side effects make me VERY (B), well, let's not go there. Anyhow, I recently found these wrist bands (well,I just bought one for 100 dollars), that help with any nausea. I am not sure if they work. I need to test on a windy Colorado road. It's something to try. My understanding is that it can help, even if you are already sick. Also, I have ginger chews in my purse for immediate relief. Works great. Heidi

I carry all sizes of Flex Tape aboard. You can dive on the hull, scrape the area around the thru hull, then apply tape. It can be applied from underwater. Just another method of no geyser. Don't forget to go back and remove the tape tho. This tape can be used for sudden leaks inside or outside of your boat. I'd suggest if a big leak to put tape on both inside and outside of the hull till you can get in for repairs. This can be done while en-route to somewhere in the sea. Just make sure if your solo you are attached to your boat.

Dan G I suppose. But, so long as you’re smart about the risks you take none of terrible things will happen. Also, I’d welcome the risk in exchange. Work, even work you generally enjoy will eventually become drudgery. Yes there danger on the sea and terrible things can happen. But at least it’s not dragging oneself through life one day at a time one step closer to death.

Lauren, like me, you were born in the wrong era! Although, Frank is always in style! A classic is a classic! You can't say that about todays music! Also, when I was in the Navy they used to put out a very plain milk cracker with no salt or seasoning on it at all. The thought was that these crackers would absorb the liquids in your stomach and keep it from sloshing around and in turn you from getting sick. We used to use Nabisco's Lunch Crackers in the purple/maroonish box and believe it or not they work. If you see them maybe give them a try. Good luck!

Sometimes we would leave in the night thus letting us be at Cat Key or wherever we planned to check in early in the day. Poor Lauren. She's tough though, still functioning. I used to co-drive, reading the stage notes, in car rallies. Normally I'd be fine. But sometimes nausea bites. There's nothing worse. I'd be half-dead, head in a bag, unable to do anything useful. This 2-day rally started with torrential rains, high heat, and brutal humidity. We had to run with the heat and blower fan on high just to keep the windows from fogging up. That did me in. Day-2, although still muddy, was way more fun, until the car caught fire on the very last stage. The battery shorted out and lit the battery cables on fire. We lost 8 minutes putting the fire out. Martin tied the melted cables back together and clamped the knots tight with a pair of vice-grips. Car started right up again and we somehow finished 3rd on the two-wheel-drive podium. Fun stuff, eh?

Great video! Particularly liked the singing. I often enjoy Dino’s “Amore” while de-rigging after regattas.

I'm sure you've heard this many times, but a big help for seasickness is to immediately take the helm. Then concentrate on fixing your eyes on the horizon, not the waves or the boat. Sail on guys!

I know this is too little too late, but Long Key Bight, at the SE end of the Channel 5 bridge, is a perfect anchorage in most any conditions. Good on you, Droopy Dog, for not pushing Lauren too hard. Theres no need to rush.

Great video guys. I've been following y'all for a while. Started following when I saw you make the journey through Alabama. It's where I call home. Roll Tide!! Really hated to see the JACKASS you encountered in Mobile with your Solar Panel Rack. We are not all like that and hope you don't have that impression for the rest of the state. Seeing you sing Sinatra to get through the sea sickness was just a hoot!! The two of you are a really great fun loving couple and would seem to be such a joy to spend time with. Keep these wonderful videos coming and enjoy time with your sister in the Bahamas!!

Hey guys, Jim n Matt here. That was a crazy good video - like one of your best. We seriously dig what you’re doing. Well, except for Kirk’s $60 dollar liquor bill..... that was funny (and not enough).....😅. Anyway, great job and hopefully we’ll see you out there.

I used to open the hatch above my head when I would do that.. Then I replaced my electronics and got a thru hull that had a gate in it that held up the water. Always an adventure!

I had a colonoscopy to Sinatra and Dean Martin. A no anesthetic colonoscopy is a few cramps, a lotta laughs and thanks to my doctor's taste, great music - that you're awake to enjoy; and you can drive yourself home. Compared to sea sickness, it's a stroll down a beach...but with your pants off and a camera up yer keister. Good videos, (Yours not mine). Thanks.
I think a general rule for any hole in the bottom of your boat is that water will try its best to squirt up to sea level. I've heard sailors talk about how much water can pour in through a specific size hole, etc... Makes you want to go out and buy two of the biggest pumps you can find. Fair winds.

The "barrel" that you insert the water log into usually has a small flapper valve which limits the flow of water into your boat when you pull it while still in the water. I wrap a towel around the base and catch nearly all of the water when I pull it to clean it. Of course you have to have the plug ready to go! I broke my last paddle wheel and found out you can buy just the replacement paddle and pin. Running new wire to your cockpit instrument is a multiple-hell job so just changing the paddle wheel is an attractive option.
