      I used acrylic matte medium for peony painting. Also used acrylic slow dry medium in few of my paintings. I use water just to wet the brush.

      First thing is, I adjust the reference image in the aspect ratio of my canvas. Then just put the grid lines as many as you feel you will require to draw the picture on the canvas. Then rule out the same number of grid lines on your canvas and start drawing. Keeping the aspect ratio of your reference image same as that of your canvas is the key. And grid lines helps to draw the almost similar image on the canvas.
