First off, I am an alumni of Gonzaga University. I would like to take the time and give my opinion on Gonzaga going to the PAC-12. I realize this is actually a business decision. Many years ago when Gonzaga's basketball program went from the Big Sky to the WCC they proceeded to dominate the WCC for well over 20 years. They have developed a winning formula that has made this program a perennial basketball power.
There formula for success is the following. They basically play an NBA style of basketball, which is entertaining to watch. Next they recruit players that have the skill set to play an up tempo style of basketball. Historically the WCC is not known for being a high quality basketball conference. Some years the league may have 2 or 3 teams eligible for the NCAA tournament. Then in some years the WCC may have teams that should be playing Division II basketball. This up and down quality of the WCC in the past has hindered Gonzaga's chances of achieving a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
What Gonzaga has done to rectify this situation is schedule top ranked teams during the preseason. Such as North Carolina, Duke, Kansas and Connecticut etc. To Gonzaga's credit they will play these team anywhere. The physicality of playing these contenders does take a toll on Gonzaga's mainline players. After playing these powerhouse teams in the preseason.
The Zags enter the regular season a little banged up. The general lack of quality teams in the WCC in terms of physicality allows Gonzaga to some extent to "lick their wounds" while still dominating the WCC and heal at the same time. The healing is just in time for the conference tournament and getting a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
Going to the PAC-12 this formula for winning will no longer work They can no longer play the top teams in the preseason and enter the regular season in the PAC-12 banged up because of the high physicality of every team in the PAC-12. For example Gonzaga can easily beat CAL there will be a physical toll in winning. This will be the case for every team they play in the PAC-12. There will be no "easy" victories whereby the game is over in the first half. As a result when the Zags enter the PAC-12 tournament there not going to be at full strength like in the days when they were in the WCC.
Recruiting is going to be much more difficult because now Gonzaga will be directly competing with Tommy Lloyd's Arizona team.
In my opinion Gonzaga's baseball program will benefit more by being in the PAC-12 than the basketball team. The baseball team will benefit more from national exposure than the basketball team.
In conclusion the future for Gonzaga Basketball is a little cloudy. I haven't even considered NIL Going from a Mid Major to a Major program will present itself with a whole lot of problems in some instances not anticipated. I hope Gonzaga University is up to the challenge.
