"Battle Against A True Hero" - What a fitting theme. I don't know of any game out there where you want to root against your own character like this.

Undyne at this point is the only enemy that can stand a hit from genocide run. But what is important to notice is that her hp pool is around 23,000. Compare to asriel that he is 9999. Sans hp is just 1. This can only give us one conclusion. When she was about to die she gained everybody dreams and hope that you killed at this point. This giving the conclusion that HP -might- mean -HoPe- or something similar. Undyne believed so hard she could do it she gained the strength to face you, to stop you for a little. At the end you didn't really won the battle against her as she saved the civils along with alphys. Undyne died a hero that not even death could grip her victory.
A fun fact is. Her attacks are all trying to stop you from moving or acting.

Actually, it's possible that she has determination in her. In the Pacifist run, you fight Amalgamates, melted creatures that were INJECTED with determination. Determination makes monsters melt. If there is too much of it in them, that is. Undyne must have been injected with a little bit of determination from Gaster. And that might be why she was like that. She was determined to kill the Evil™ player who went around killing all the monsters. She had been determined to fight. And when she was about to die, she started to melt before turning to dust.

Sans is easier than Undyne. Sans has a rhythm that you can memorize. Undyne has attacks that are unpredictable.

Toby hit this story beat right on the head. Making a character like Undyne, who hates humans, yet in both routes, she ends up having a change of heart. In the pacifist run, it's because you befriend her. In the genocide run, it's because you're such a threat that it puts everything else in perspective. Suddenly there's no difference between the humans and monsters, if you get past her, they all die.

this is how the villain feels fighting you in every video game where you are the hero just think about that.
+Vank 101 Well id argue that that's not exactly the case in most situations. While the similarities between genocide Frisk and many insane antagonists are large, there's a key difference. Antagonists are driven purely by their own madness. Here you are in control, sure, but Frisk him/herself is the real driving force and you are just carrying out his will practically. We see many times in the genocide run that Frisk acts differently in genocide than normally. Even Frisk's item descriptions change to be more cynical. When you eat the instant noodles, you go though the normal process of cooking them, and only heal 4 hp. In genocide however, you immediately eat them saying "they taste better dry." and recover 90 hp. Even when you check monster kid the flavor text is " looks like free EXP." So sure WE feel bad when we do this, but Frisk, the psycopathic killer who has no positive emotions sure doesn't.

Wow....the genocide character is such a complete monster, freaking serial killer, Undyne is so heroic, but even she fails because of the sure determination of the adversary. Such a depressing game (on this path).

I can't seem to deal with those yellow arrows at all. My eyes just can't keep up with what's going on with them.
+gilgamesh310 The way I managed was I looked at a video and wrote down when the yellow arrows were coming and what order they were coming in. It made it a little easier; enough to save me a couple dozen deaths learning it without a video.

@@ariesleo7396 yeah, undyne seems to be exceptional as a monster able to create determination without being injected, but she did have enough to melt as shown by how, when you defeat her, she starts melting

The thing about Undertale is that the game is formed by timelines, and the more times you reset the timelines the more lives you ruin. The only satisfactory ending for Undertale is the Pacifist ending where everyone, except Flowey :( , lives happily ever after with a normal timeline and none of the major characters dead. If you play genocide mode, not only do you ruin that timeline, but the only other timeline worth ending the game with.

The twisted dichotomy is that the pacifist route shows that the power of friendship can triumph over evil. Yet the Genocide run shows that the power of friendship is completely pointless.
Undyne, a hero who feels the hearts and souls of all living things beating within her and has to stop a murderous monster in order to save the world gets jump kicked in the face with a little shit wearing tap dancing shoes.
We can only conclude that the power of friendship and unity was never a real source of power to begin with. Only the determination to see things through.
I could not disagree more. This is the second-hardest battle in the entire game, full stop. All those players who were stymied by her, she saved the world from them. And even when she's defeated, she knows her friends won't have made her death in vain. Alphys evacuated everyone, and she's confident that Asgore will destroy you - and you won't hurt anyone else. In the end, she dies with a smile on her face, full of hope.
And while she was mistaken on exactly who would destroy the player, she wasn't wrong - that battle does stop a great many players.
Power of friendship is not just about combat, the power of determination in battle. It's knowing that you're battling for a purpose, and even if you lose, you have faith that your life hasn't been given in vain.
The way this game uses its music is probably the single most impressive thing about it to me. It's wonderful how her fight starts out with what is, well, a superhero theme music - a superhero, someone who dresses up in funny costumes and really only plays at fighting.
And then you kill the fish, and the second fights starts, and suddenly it's not a game anymore. And instead of something that fits someone playing the hero, you get something fitting for someone who is *being* a hero... and every note just breathes desperation, conviction and a sense of wistful finality.
Because real heroes *die.*

Undyne is a true heroine. She knows the odds are not in her favor, but she will fight to stop you no matter what, because she wants to protect her loved ones.

One good thing about a Genocide Run is that the characters really show their best side. In here not only is Undyne completely justified in hunting you down and trying to kill you but she even goes so far as to save the Monster Kid's life at the cost of her own. Then she pulls herself back from death because her desire to save the world from you causes Undyne to produce her own determination, and she fights you as hard as possible.

This game...It teaches you something many other games don't even bring up.
If you choose to do the Genocide route, it shows how lonely and depressing the life of a killer really is. It gives you numerous chances to redeem yourself. Before you have a boss fight against Sans, he even says that you are continuing to kill just so you can see what happens, not for any real reason at all.
Also, these characters man...
Papyrus is such an innocent soul. He always believes in you. When you fight him, and kill him, he STILL believes in you before he disintegrates.
If you kill Mettaton or Undyne? Alphys commits suicide.
These characters become so attached to the Pacifist Frisk, that playing the Genocide Chara truly hurts.
This isn't a game. These aren't just characters. I don't care if their just pixels on a screen.
They're better than most people I've met in real life, and I just love these guys.

You get emotionally attached to everyone you meet and understand how they live their lives just to get by. They only thing they have to keep them from sinking are friends and family to have the determination to hold on; and to think you can just simply take it all away and let them drown...

I can't remember how many times I came back and watched this fight. Countless different videos and youtubers, and somehow on everyone's fight, the part of the soundtrack with the guitar comes up when you get attacked by the circle of spears. It's a slow easy to dodge attack, you can finally relax, and the soundtrack gives you that chance too.
I'm sure Toby did some magic to make that happen.
At 5:04 seemed like her attacks were synched up with her theme song. Thats pretty cool

You know that weird moment when you want the player to lose
I highly recommend to use the "ballet shoes" (?) as weapon. If you manage to give very good and some perfect hits in challenge, you can avoid that last circle spear attack, which is a big help. (I had only 6 HP left in challenge after the last reverse-arrow attack, when I killed her)

This fight is insane. I do not have the reflexes for it!
one interesting fact, Undyne has immense "determination", which people who play the game know has an inworld and meta effect on the game just like wiht flowey and the player character.
Infact its so strong that if you use cheats to get into debug mode, you cant use the cheat to "spare" monsters in fights, both in this version and her genocide version, because she's THAT determined to stop you and save her friends and people.

This is some one punch man shit here. Every monster you come across instantly dies from one hit but then you have Undyne. This is like Saitama vs Boros.

In my neutral run, I just annoyed her by running away. Here it is different.

Omg how do you not feel like Satan? I mean i get it, and it's just a game etc, but she is the actual heroine in this run, and you just kill her. She even wanted to save the HUMANS from YOU, thats how bad you have become. I would feel soooo bad. She is a cool badass with an hardcore determination and loyalty to the ones she care about, and still we just slaughter her like if she was another Whimsun (well, Undyne may be a tad harder to kill, but you get my point).
Easily one of the best fights in the game.

Doing the genocide run on my first ever run of this game is one of my biggest regrets lmfao but I feel it will be so much more worth it if i complete this ending before any of the others
