  • A simple experiment to discover what stresses high school students leads to disturbing results that soon become a story on their own. Michaela Horn shares her journey, results, and the alarming turn of events that unfolded.
A junior at Wheaton North High School, Michaela Horn is a cultural and philanthropic powerhouse. She plays piano and violin and is a member of the Wheaton North Sinfonia Orchestra and Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, having performed with her school at venues in Beijing and Shanghai. She’s a member of the Wheaton North speech team. She also writes for the school’s Falcon Flyer newspaper. She’s stood on five continents. She’s organized a book and donation drive, distributing more than 3,000 books to schools and orphanages in Ghana. She referees children’s soccer, was an assistant chess instructor for a grade school chess team, and sponsors a fellow student in Ghana, providing financial and personal support. She’s also a junior counselor at the Camp Invention summer education program. And that’s all before 18 years old.
Michaela was selected as a member of Oxford University summer educational program. She is looking forward to attending college after high school, possibly majoring in engineering. One day, she was like I'm gonna kill myself and then she disappeared for like 2 weeks. Those were tbe scariest 2 weeks of my life. I felt like I lost something that I could've saved. Then she eventually replied and told me that she was fine.

It's truly terrible how much stress there is
    - homework
    - sleep
    - tests
    - projects
    +group projects specifically
    - communication
    - social
    - friendship
    - family
    - mental
    - health
    - appearance
    - trends
    - sports
    - financial
    - work
I even would freak out about the little things, though it could have just been me but I had and still have serious social inabilities simply saying "here!" Every class would make my hands sweat, I understand it's petty and a little sad but I have just grown up that way.

I cried in four classes today at school due to stress. Only one teacher asked me if I was okay (and then the only thing she did was pat my shoulder), and only one friend comforted me. My own parents yelled at me after school, saying it was my fault that I was stressed about my four AP tests coming up and that it was my fault I don’t get enough sleep.

Little Baby Owl, I am so sorry to hear you cried in four classes. I hope I was there. I would have wrapped my arms around you. It is definitely not your fault you are stressed. The work expectation of the modern teenager is overwhelming. I actually stay up late into the night studying with my kids to try and ease their stress. Parents also have to step in to do what they can to help. Remember, it is not your fault you are not getting enough sleep. Your work load is extensive. We just have to find a way to take away the stress. I know your classmates and fellow school mates are going through similar issues. I have two requests to ask. Firstly, If you like talk please share the link to as many people as possible because we will like to share this with others. Secondly, What can we do to help?

Josephine Horn thank you, everyone, for your kind words. I wasn’t expecting anyone to see my comment, let alone respond to it. I’m feeling much better as my first AP test is tomorrow and they’ll all be done in a little over a week. After that, I know most of my stress will go away.
The day I cried in school, the friend that comforted me in class cheered me up by hanging out with me after school. Turns out she was having a bad day too, she was just hiding it more than me. This made me realize just how stress-inducing school is for all of my peers.
I know that it was my choice to get heavily involved in extracurricular activities and challenging classes, but I felt pressured to do it in order to gave a better chance of making it into a top-ranked university. A lot of kids at my school feel the same way, and there’s tremendous amounts of stress.

I do mostly blame myself for my grades and lack of sleep... I mean, I am a procrastinating beast who goes to bed at midnight only to wake up at 5 in the morning to 6 alarms. But it's because I'm trying not to fall victim to the full student life, where I would have no goals or dreams or passions. I'm pushing school aside oftentimes just to keep my steadily decreasing playfulness from vanishing altogether just because I'm forced to do other things I often quite frankly render as useless.

    • @galaxygaming3414
      @galaxygaming3414 6 лет назад +44

Kristen Rasmussen I have to put my whole effort on school every week day and sometimes weekends and vacations bc I have to worry about getting to the next grade, getting all A's, making my parents proud, and most important to me not being pushed around at school bc I'm a nobody and don't have anything special. Also I may only be in middle school, but equally tied with that is college. My parents didn't save up money, and I can't start saving yet, so I have to get a full scholarship. And considering we don't have a lot of money i can't just ask them for a bunch of money on holidays. Most of the money I get ($20 on holidays) I spend on food and snacks.

    • @kristenrasmussen4135

Galaxy Gaming I'm... sorry? I can't tell if you want me to pity you and your situation, or praise the hard work you've achieved. Congrats for being so smart and being able to endure so much. I'm sorry you don't have time for much else. Frankly, very few can actually afford college. People will probably die from old age and still have student loans to pay off. I'm not sure if I can go to the one I'm planning to enroll in because it's so freaking expensive. That's life today. It sucks. If you really are in middle school, please don't worry about college just yet; you're still so young! Enjoy yourself a little. If you're worried about being consumed by nothing but school, do something about it! Write something, draw, paint, plant, maybe even tutor other kids who aren't as intelligent as you. You're only going to go so far if you sit down in a desk and do what everyone tells you and learn what everyone wants you to learn. How you grow your own passions is what makes you different than everyone, and how you won't be a "nobody." You won't be letting your parents down if you take a breath once in a while, I promise. And if your parents are really picky about your grades, just know that your life isn't defined by A's. :)

    • @josephinehorn235
      @josephinehorn235 6 лет назад +13

Galaxy Gaming, sometimes it helps to know you are not alone in this. There are so many kids going through a similar situation. If you are in middle school and already feel this pressure, we need to find a way to ease your pressure because the workload will let harder and multiple in High School. One thing I definitely do not want you to have is stress. We need to find out what you are doing and what you help you need to ease your stress. One thing that is worth noting is, normally your middle school grades do not show up on your high school transcript. If you happen to be taking high school courses, some schools list them. You have to check with your school. If your school does not list the middle school classes on your transcript, I will highly recommend you use your middle school years to work on things you do not know and not try to be a perfect "A" student all the time if that does not work out. You are a kid. You need to spend some time playing and putting a smile on your face. Let me know if I can help in any way. Please share the link to as many people as possible because we will like to share this important issue with others.

Same, because of the fact I don't wanna live a boring life, only getting to live my life on Saturday or Sunday-- but certainly not both! I normally stay up late just to give me the chance to do something I wanna do. I'll procrastinate until the morning of the due date. So far, after finally getting prescribed for ADHD and taking the meds, I've been getting good grades. Though, I'm not sure how. Honestly I don't remember any of it! Most of the time in class I'll have to be reminded what to do. Then I can do it until I forget again.

A girl in my math class once had a mental breakdown while ranting to out teacher that he gives us too much work. He gives us 20 problems a night, and a quiz/test every week. This girl in particular started to tell us about how she is extremely busy after school. She goes to dance class for a few hours, practices for orchestra, and gets home at around 11pm, and still has to eat dinner and do homework. She has even said that she went to bed at 2 in the morning. That's about 4 hours of sleep. She does this and wakes up at 6 in the morning everyday and still comes to school and does her best. She is even the school councils president. Often she comes to school with bags under her eyes. I look up to her a lot. She hardly gets enough sleep and has so much responsibility and is always busy yet still puts a smile on her face, when deep inside she's struggling so much.

And the bad part is, the teacher has no control over how much homework or work they give.
The district has control over it.
Honestly, school needs to change big time. This is a new age, and school should be adjusted to different types of schedules so no matter what, people (especially teens) aren’t overwhelmed.
It completely hurts me when I see comments like this because I’ve had sleepless nights too.
But the Board Of Education is too far up their a** that they can’t even hear the complaints.
I’m so sorry this happened. 😔

      I feel her.
I dont get much homework in biology, but physics and chemistry have an IMMENSE syllabus that students are expected to finish in a few months, then we are expected to practice past question papers. Oh and, we get 5 papers per subject, so for me and my classmates its 20 papers every semester. Three of them are from our syllabus from junior year, the other two are from the syllabus of the senior year. And one of them is the lab practical, where you get no guidance whatsoever. But wait, its not only that: the long 20 page assignments we need to do in like 1 day in physics and chemistry count as a large part of our grades. And apart from all this, we have to prepare for not only the SAT's, but UKCAT, IMAT, BMAT and all other entrance exams since we have to go to an abroad university. I want to do medicine, so I dont mind all of this but apart from all this I am also the head of my house, so I have to be responsible for about a quarter of the girls in the entire school. And I also practice chess, speedcubing, speedreading and aptitude reasoning every day. I have almost zero social life lol. And I get lucky with 4 hours of sleep each night. My routine consists of schoolwork, practice extracurriculars, prepare for entrance exams, run around disciplining toddlers and angsty tweens and teens, and stay calm even if I couldnt sleep last night. Throw in a vouple of coffee, youtube and snack breaks, and my day is full.
Coronacation has lightened my load a lil tho, I dont have to worry about screaming at kids all day.

The dangers of speaking with total strangers on the internet, it could be you can be lied to, and groomed. If you have decent parents ( meaning parents that care about you although they may be busy or wrapped in their own problems) PLEASE TALK TO THEM!! These are the people that love you the most and they will try to understand what’s going on! Tell them how you feel and if needed look up for a therapist! Have a little faith in your family first, or a good friend. Not all parents are bad. Most of us are willing to listen to you and try to help you but you have to tell us how it is, and every feeling you have! Sometimes you just want attention from your parents. Maybe they give more time to a sibling or they may get the impression you want nothing to do with them because you spend your whole day in the computer or on your phone and you don’t wanna even talk to us for a minute, and when asked you say everything is ok! Reach out! We love you and you are the reason we wake up in the morning and go to work because we want to give you at least the basics so you are, dressed, fed, educated etc etc. and sometimes we may forget that you need to be herd, and you need our time and attention because you deserve it.
You have it difficult, school, friends, social media. I understand so let’s help each other. Spend more time with your family, learn to cook, bake, language or a hobby.
Spend less time on the internet. That’s a source that gives you anxiety and stress. Read a book, listen to music, bring friends to your house. Play an instrument. Or if you have too many extra curricular activities, drop some.
      Your sanity is first.
      Good luck.

This is so me, our math teacher is considerate, but one student goes, we can do 25 sums today!
I spend 2 hrs for dance class, 2 for music, then eat, do homework, then worry about unnecessary things all night
I had a total breakdown at school and one of my friends who always teased me comforted me, the previous day, my brother took my music note and didn't share and I got so frustrated, I yelled at him and the music teacher scolded me plus,my best friend totally betrayed me that day, ignored me. As a result I didn't study for a test that day
The other friend was so sweet that day, honestly I don't know what I would have done if she hadn't comforted me
Once my teacher told : since ur so good at studying and extra curriculums, u are gonna be a prefect, I told no, and she scolded me for saying no. It was too much on my plate
Once I couldn't do the board work(we shifted every day,we hv to clean the board and write the time table)since I was volunteering for substituting for primary kids, she said this: just being good at studying isn't enough! It's ur turn and u just went on ur own job, u have a responsibility

Take a break for a solid 20-25 minutes and just breathe. This might clear your mind and get you back on track. If you think you can’t do all five tasks at least finish one. Even though you haven’t finished four out of five, you at least did *something*.

Adults have spent our entire lives telling us not to complain and that it gets worse when we grow up like that somehow negates from our current stress. They ignore our mental illnesses and freak out when we do something to ourselves, blaming us and saying that we overreacted. Then when we grow up and leave them behind and never talk to them, they wonder why we want to cut them off.

This is my junior year and I have become so anxious. Every time I hear a phone ring, every time I hear the door open, every sudden sound or movement keep me on edge because I feel guilty about how much work I pushed aside because I dont want to lose my passions and personality drowning in school. My parents have yelled at me for failing classes and lying about grades, and I feel like I should've gotten more severe punishments, but I just can't bring myself to do work regularly. My older sister was top 10 in her class, a class officer, got a high SAT score and got a full ride at her first choice college. Because of the pandemic, my junior year has been a huge flop, I'm in the third quartile, I'm no where near popular enough to become a class officer, and SAT is this Wedneday and I can only pray and study on the writing section. I've come to accept that I'm less than my older sister and that I'm just not cut out for student life, but I dont wanna disappoint my parents who worked so hard to come here to give us a better life. I've been trying my best to get out of that inferiority complex that is preventing me from being a good role model for my little sister and preventing me from being able to move forward independently, but every time I do I crash and burn. I've had thoughts that I was a burden as well and wished I could run away, but that would only bring more harm to my parents and little sister. I just wished my life didn't have to revolve around grades, especially now that the pandemic and a million other personal events have not helped with school. Ik my problems aren't that uncommon or that bad comparatively, but. I cant talk about this with anyone because my friend group is filled with prodigies and incredibly smart people, my parents' current best interest is my future now that I'm a junior and my siblings would probably not have the necessary tools to emotionally comfort me. Sorry for the rambling, just needed to physically put my thoughts into words so I could calm down a bit.

That bit about how hard it is for teenagers to share their issues with adults really got to me. Even after I decided to tell my parents about the problems I was facing, it still took me over six months to actually do it, and even then I couldn’t work up the nerve to tell them in person. I ended up getting up in the middle of the night, sneaking into the computer room, and crying my eyes out writing it all down, only to stick the note in my mother’s book that I knew she was reading. It’s so hard to say anything - like the fact that I couldn’t deal with it by myself made me weak or pathetic. I know my parents would never think of me that way - how hard must it be for teens who don’t have that assurance?

Omg Im so glad I'm not the only one. I haven't been diagnosed with anything, but my own research suggests that I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Sensory processing disorder. The only reason I have yet to be diagnosed is because I'm too triggered by confrontation to tell my parents. My whole life I've been taught that people don't care about my problems and that they aren't really important. I've picked up destructive habits and toxic thought processes from the sheer stress of even imagining telling my parents. I've written them many letters and never delivered them, always backing out at the last second because I think they won't care, as per what I've been taught. Do you happen to have any advice on overcoming these fears?

    • @sydneypuente9195

@@cjadams7548 I went through a similar issue about three years ago. I had dealt with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts off an on since late elementary school. It took me until I was 16 to finally tell my mom and to be honest with you it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. I wrote a note too. I gave the note to my mom right before I went to sleep so I would know when she read it and so I wouldn't have to immediately talk about it. It gave me a sense of control and made it easier for me to go through with it. My thought process that night was basically just like "screw it what do I have to lose? I'm already miserable all the time."
Fair warning though: it wasn't an immediate sense of relief. The pressure just slowly lifted as I no longer had to suffer through the fear of what would happen if I told my parents. In the following weeks even before I got treatment it felt great knowing that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Just that knowledge and the end of that dread about having to tell your family and/or friends made me feel so much better. It will relieve a lot of the emotional pressure you are under.
Also the feeling that no one cares could be from experience, but it is almost definitely being magnified by the mental/emotional trauma you're experiencing. At least you'll know for sure what will happen instead of suffering through that fear all of the time. And don't belittle what you've been through when you explain, it will only make it easier for others to belittle it. This is a serious issue so, at the very least, know that we hear you and what you feel does matter.

Unfortunately for many suffering suicidal thoughts and pressuring suicide.. a lot of families do not take it seriously.. my family told me to my face it's a phase and it will pass. Here I am grown and I still have suicidal thoughts and attempts on myself. It's not just a phase. My mother told me straight to my face I am too chicken and laughed about it.. the hurt I felt after she told me that had me torn.. and ashamed that I actually wanted to prove her wrong... but did I? Well I fought through my selfish wants of proving her wrong.. every single day I'm fighting against wanting to kill myself.. because I know I'd be hurting them... I have read too many horrible stories of kids who have committed and families torn broken and suicidal after their kid took their life. So I fight my selfish relief so that doesn't happen to my family. And for those fighting the want to leave this world, there are tons of people like you too. Tons who hate being where they are and who have seen the world and just want to give up because they feel utterly hopeless about it. I understand that feeling, and the feeling of having sweet release from all the stress and anxiety by just killing myself so all the thoughts end, and so we don't have to fight it anymore. But it doesn't end the fight, especially for friends and family, after you cave into the sweet release, it always leaves a huge depressing scar on the family and friends who know you. There is much more to our stories than that.. we feel no one really cares about them.. we feel no one really wants to see and hear about it.. but even then... we still have to fight it and live on. And I am so sorry if even after reading this it doesn't move you into wanting to stay here.. I guess I do not blame anyone for those feelings since I have them so often as well.. that's why I still have attempts myself, and sometimes I can't handle fighting the thoughts... there are drugs that can help this, but I don't feel like numbing my mind on them. There is also other substances you can take to numb it out, and if it works than go for it but not if it's affecting your behavior and life.. I would cut back on it.. that's why I don't take anything except sugar..my go to bad habit is sugar. It numbs my mind with the releases of dopamine and damages it at the same time. My other habits are video games and RUclips videos. Good Distraction and chemicals in the brain is key to helping fight the bad thoughts of wanting to die.. for me anyway it has. Hoping you get the serious help you need and friends who will talk and listen to you. Good luck to you.

I wish I know who you are. I read your piece and wanted to let you know it is difficult for most people to know what you are going through. I know it is not a phase and know it is very real. My daughter Michaela was trying to address this very issue in her talk. I know a lot of people like you struggle to find reasons to stay in this world. As bad as things might be, it is worth staying because the next day brings hope. There are times we just don't know what to do with ourselves, and in those very moments, it is very easy to give up. What I try to do each day is think of only one reason to brighten my life. It may be a s simple as, "the sun came up today". I know there is always a long list of things that go wrong, but I force myself to think of something good. This makes me feel better. My sister attempted suicide a lot of times, I was at home 3 of those times, she did it in differently each time. She is doing much better now, because she is in love, it might sound like a fairy tale, but that's how it is. She's happier now and it shows.
As to me, I still feel hopeless sometimes, but I am better. I guess I love someone too now, I still haven't done everything I want to do with my life yet, that makes me feel useless but keeps me moving forward at the same time.
      I hope you feel better.

I’m only 13 and I want to leave, and the even sadder thing is that other people my age and my own friends also feel this way. If schools didn’t force us to study and revise and do homework and if we didn’t also have to do other things that further raise our stress level we wouldn’t want to kill ourselves

I have so much work that I am afraid to do it. I get home and all I want to do is sleep, eat, and have time for myself. Instead Im told to get work done. The issue is though, that teachers forget we're human, and that I find I'm unwilling to work when I get home, which results in more stress and piled up work I wasnt motivated to do. School's not easy...

So my school has a weekly newsletter where my principal has a section where she answers our anonymous questions, and one time my friend submitted a question about the amount of homework she had been receiving. She wrote that she had, quite literally, received 24 hours worth of homework over the weekend, which is absolutely ridiculous. And it wasn't that she was procrastinating during this time either. She was actually doing the homework she was assigned. And then my principal proceeded to say that she just wasn't managing her time well enough because "24 hours of homework is ridiculous".

You are not alone in this situation. It is very frustrating when you work so hard but your grades do not show how hard you worked. We are all different in the way we capture information. Some people have an easy time understanding information once it is taught, other people take a little longer. I am a visual person which means it takes me a little longer to process the information because I need to translate it into diagrams, pictures or anything that I can see to help me process the information. You definitely need to talk to your parents. I do not think they will laugh at you. Parents normally want to know why you are not getting good grades. If you do not understand the material, you need to let them know so you can work out a way to make learning easier for you. You indicated you like to draw. That is perfect. For example if you are doing math, try to translate it into a picture, table or something you can visually relate to. This helps me a lot. I hope it helps you too. Please talk to you parents. I hope I hear back from you to find out how it went. I will be here for you always. I also have some learning materials that will help you. I am waiting to hear from you. I have faith and confidence in you.

I think most of us are afraid to not have a story to tell. That there is nothing special about us. Or we are scared of not achieving our dreams because those moments remind us just how special our stories really are. Those moments when we fail a big exam or that moment you have so much to do you start to break down. Slowly. And when you breakdown completely, you’re a different person entirely. A person that hates the surrounding world around them. A person who hates the people around you. But most importantly, a person that hates themselves. But you don’t complain because you tried but the only response you got was “it’s just a phase.” To so many people it’s “just a phase.” So... you keep quiet, slowly breaking down to the point you think and feel like you have no purpose in life. And you’re so afraid. Afraid of yourself. But the only person who can comfort you is yourself and how are you supposed to do that when you’re in so much stress. So much pain. So much...everything. You stress about not being good enough or not being worthy enough. But underneath all of that pain and hurt, you still feel a small simmer of hope. Maybe as small as an atom, but there still is hope inside of you. Hope to one day achieve everything you want in life. Wether that’s traveling the whole world or being a famous author, you still hope. So you know what I say. Hope. Hope so much that, that dream of yours does comes true. You know what I say to people who make you feel scared and afraid of doing what you really want to do. I say screw them. You should do what you want that is wanting to come out or wanting to do gosh knows what. I say do it. Do what you want and I know that’s easier said then done but take those risks. You may make a mistake, but it may end up being the best mistake of your life. But it may end up being the worst mistake of your life. Just kidding. Doing what you want to do will never end up being a mistake. Ever. And you know what? I’ve learned that it’s ok to not be ok. It’s ok to be broken and to feel unworthy. But you know what’s not ok. To give up. To give up on your dreams, and most importantly, to give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you really give up everything. So screw stress. Screw. Tomorrow, is a new day and you will start new tomorrow. And I’m not asking you to do it for those who are still reading, I’m demanding you too because you deserve it. You deserve to feel joy. True joy. And that joy may not come tomorrow. Or in a month, a year, 5 years, but be patient because it will, come. So hold on and be a semi colon; you wanted to end the sentence, but you continued. But you’re not just a sentence. You’re a whole book and so much more. So screw it all and stop waiting.
“Before she became fire, she was water.
Quenching the thirst of every dying creature.
    She gave and she gave
until she turned from sea to desert.
But instead of dying of the heat,
    the sadness, the heartache,
she took all of her pain
and from her own ashes became fire.” -Nikita Gill

I have dyslexia, Aspergers, depression and anxiety but I have to have 5 doctors to confirm each one to even apply for special provisions for exams and all they are is to be in a separate room for exams and to have a writer.
This is painful cause every time the school sees my parents to remind them that some of the work they give use for homework can take me twice as long to do due to my brain mixing up symbols they think it to be an excuse

I've literally did a essay on this and one I did the math based off a survey i did with 300 students at my school asking about how much time you spend doing homework, sports, daily chores, routines (such as eating showering ect), religious activities, family time, leisure , studying, ect and from the average times go as this 30 mins homework per subject(with eight subjects) is 4hrs another 2hrs for study,is 6hrs, 8hrs of school plus another 1hr for getting ready in the morning+driving and other miscellaneous activities you do throughout the day there's 15hrs then after school 45 mins of exercise/sport then 45 mins for dinner and hygiene stuff brings us to 16hrs 30mins and then for those who are religious another 30 mins for praying/church then there's the leisure/relaxation time we need to relieve the stress put on us so we don't break down completely which is 1hr and for our brains to properly develop we need to get the recommended 8hrs of sleep brings us to 26hours total, which as I'm sure we all know that there's only 24 hours in the day means we are just way overloaded with things to do and then we have to neglect time to something as I didn't account for having a social life/developing relationships which is also very important for our brains to properly develop or many of the other time consuming things we have to do which I'm sure there is plenty I missed and usually the thing we neglect is sleep which then impacts our capacity to do school work well which then means we usually have to do more homework or study to catch up something needs to change

Hi everyone! I know this is a little late but I would still like to give a big thank you to everyone who watched this video. Whether you liked it or not, I hope you took something away from it. I was really excited when I got the opportunity to do this talk and I wanted to make it about something I cared a lot about. I felt many people did not really like to talk about stress in high school, and many students used dark humor to talk about this subject. But I wanted to address an older audience with the particularly moving stories people sent me that I believed would give a different perspective on stress in high school. I know many adults often believe that students are exaggerating their experiences and I wanted to show that was not the case and many students just do not know how to express their trauma. Again I just want to thank all of you for the time you spent watching this video. It truly means a lot for you to listen to what I had to say.

I've been sleeping at 2am, sometimes no sleep at all.
Partly is my fault for staying up late doing other things that aren't school related. But I'm a freshman who has upper classes and advanced classes, they give me tons of homeworks and projects, lots of work. They give me so much, that I can't do the things I love and enjoy, I can't work on other things.
It's an honor for me to be top student, to be ahead of everyone else, and to have so much in me. But the price is costly, so much I want to quit. Top of the scale isn't my dream no more, it became a dream for others. I don't wanna be top, it's what others want and expect me to be.
So with all that, I do homework till around 2am and do other outside school things till I drop asleep or till it's time to leave to school. It what literally keeps me sane, it's a routine.
Hella stressed, I cry, I get mad, I'm an uncontrollable mess. But if we keep it going like this the days will pass and fly by.

Ximena Vazquez I’m essentially the exact same way (except I’m not considered the top of the top, but everything else resonates with me). Schools want to force students to do so much work, study for so many tests and quizzes, and expect us to get enough sleep and have good mental health. How is that even supposed to be possible? In this day and age, students are expected to be involved in more difficult courses and participate in several different extracurriculars in order for colleges to even consider you BUT only if you do well on important testing (SATs, ACTs, what have you). You get little to no time to do what you actually want to do because you need to get into a college to have the ability to get the majority of available jobs nowadays, and that’s not even considering the amount of experience they want you to have on top of it all. This world is run by money and unrealistic expectations that creates nothing positive for anyone, and the newer generations are suffering the most.
Sorry that was a bit long, there was just a lot that I felt the need to get out. You’re not suffering alone, we’ll deal with it together. Day by day, we’ll get through it all. We’ll get that break. It’ll be disrupted at some point, but we’ll get through that too.
      *Stay strong*

I agree with Michaela completely. I am super stressed. Whenever I tell people, most of them tell me that I have no reason to be stressed or tell me that it's all my fault. That is not at all what I want to hear. When I tell people I want to have encouragement, not have people tell me that I'm wrong about how I feel and that it's my fault. This only brings me down even more. When I get too stressed out about stuff I'll have an anxiety attack or panick attach depending on the situation, and most of the time people don't notice when I'm not ok and it's so not fair. I have only had one or two teachers notice that I wasn't "ok". All of the others either don't notice or they just brush it off. This really hurts. It shows me that really no one cares. So I bottle everything up inside me which only makes everything worse. Sometimes I have everything bottled up and can only think of the negatives and all the things people say to me and how I can't get everything done because I have too much to do. I sometimes wonder, "what's the point of even being here". Sometimes I really just want to die. Teachers need to realize how much there students are stressed. Parents and even our friends need to realize this too. We need people to be there for us. We need people to talk to.

It’s even worse when you have to deal with things outside of school like mental health problems or family issues etc. Then you have to go to school and get homework after homework shoved down your throat and have to revise for ridiculously difficult exams and you are told ‘not to stress’. It’s so heartbreaking and is probably a factor to the increasing mental health problems in younger people nowadays

My teacher often says, we need a psychologist in every school for the students. And he's absolutely right. I would like add that we, the students, also need general psychology classes to take care of our mental health as well as supporting our friends and classmates.

I’m a teenager and sometimes I don’t wanna open up about anything because adults think anything we do is just to call attention. Adults think that it’s just hormones and we are being over dramatic, some times they are right however there is just so much added pressure. They say they would rather be in our situation, and that these little things don’t matter. They are right however I’m failing geometry and physics. If I don’t pass those classes I won’t get into a good college. That’s where my snowball starts. I cry my self to sleep thinking about all this and therefore become sleep deprived. I think you can plan out the rest of my snowball from here.

It’s also stressful having friends who are suicidal and depressed, because it’s a lot of pressure when you’re the only one who knows and can help them. And you feel like it’s your responsibility because you care about them so obviously you want to help them, but we don’t have degrees and training in this! And not only that, it’s not like you can tell someone, be because that’s almost like betraying them. You kind of have to put your life on hold for them, answering texts and calls no matter where you are or what you’re doing, because it’s scary to think that they might kill themselves and it’s your fault.
It would help the most if parents were more open to their kids and made sure they weren’t giving off a judgemental image. It would help because then other teenagers don’t have to be put under high pressure situations like being told by their friend “I’m going to kill myself” and being the only person who can do anything about it.

My parents always say when I’m stressed that they were teenagers too and they dealt with stress so I need to get over it. I literally wake up, get ready while studying for a test, got to school, get home, do homework, go to sleep(not much sleep because I always have nightmares about school), and repeat. It’s come to a point where I can’t do extracurriculars because I barely have enough time to even eat because the amount of work piled on me daily. I cry everyday when I got to sleep because I don’t want my parents to worry about me if I cry while doing work.

I once told my mother about all the problems and stress I had been going through, and it took me a lot of strength and crying. But even she, who was a psychologist, told me that it was a common thing because I was a teenager and during this part of my life it’s usual to feel confused.
Well, I don’t know if it’s common or not, but waking up without a purpose to live most of the days for two years, breaking down crying like a mess alone in your room at least once a week or for many straight days and harming yourself every time you’re overwhelmed by emotions and stress, doesn’t sound really normal or healthy to me.
Even though things are a bit better now, I’m still waiting to be listened at.

    • @michaelahorn6538
      @michaelahorn6538 5 лет назад

Marina, I am listening. Sometimes comfort comes from places you least expect. We should never be stressed and should try and avoid it, but I know it is not easy with all the things you have to do, so we have to try our best to reduce the stress by looking through all the things you do to see if there is anything you can cut out which you do not need. For example if you do so many extra curricular activities, you need to truly look at the list to see if you need to do all of them. This is just an example. I will love to hear from you to see what you think.

    • @marinac.ll.4840
      @marinac.ll.4840 5 лет назад

Hey Michaela! Yes, I absolutely agree that the first step to reduce stress is to cut out those ‘unnecessary’ things that create it. But sometimes even the most little things put together can cause that person to lose their confidence, and in consequence stress them out because they feel they aren’t good enough. But of course, having too many extracurricular activities are a great contribution to stress.
Sometimes, all you need to do to get rid of those negative thoughts are some days off of all your responsibilities to look at your problems from another perspective. I also noticed that relying on things can help you. For example, I started to stan a music band and this helped me continue going, the same way you can rely on religion or a thing you’re passionate about. Having a little thing you enjoy or your special moment to relax every day is the clue to start working on your confidence and build the ability to control your emotions.

    • @josephinehorn235
      @josephinehorn235 5 лет назад +1

Marina, I am here to listen to you. Although stress is normal and we go through one form of it everyday, it is equally true that what you are going through concerns you, which means you have a sense it is not normal for you. You have to do so much work, less sleep and more work. The problem is, lack of sleep only makes things worse. I have been working hard with my kids to make sure they get enough sleep because when they do not, I notice it affects their emotions. Michaela Horn(the speaker in the video) is my daughter. She also goes through a lot of stress because of school work, so I made a deal with her to try and take some of her stress away. This involves identifying what she is having problems with, providing tutors to help her, and the most important thing is talking to her all the time and making sure I listen and do something about her concerns. I am here to listen, and I would love to hear from you to know how you are doing.

With time, I’ve learnt how to manage my own stress and, as you said, sleep is so important. For me now, a minimum of 7 hours is non negotiable. I also schedule free time purposely, and know when to cut off things when I’m starting to get overwhelmed.
However, I do think that everything I went through during those times has shaped who I am. I definitely tend to suffer a lot from anxiety, mainly caused by my own expectations and others’. So my mental health is something I’m always taking care of.

You know what's frustrating and keeps us from solving, sharing our problems? When you tell somebody that you're stressed and feel bad (cheated, stressed, hurt, facing problems and pain) and they respond with "Stressed?/ Pained?/ Problems?/ Hurt? You don't even know what it is. I know what it feels like!" OR simply ignore that because they've no answer when they themselves are at fault.
Start listening to my problems, ask me what they are, give a trial solution. Maybe it won't reduce my hurt or solve the problem but I would surely, definitely feel better. Ask me about my problems if you have any respect or regret or even want to behave as humane with me.

Yes. Even when I was in HS and tried to share my issues with my family, they never took me seriously and waved it off as me throwing a tantrum. So I stopped sharing anything with them personal. I'm already 29 and nobody in my family still to this day refuse to acknowledge or believe about any issues I might bring up. Thankfully I had online friends who stood by me. And that helped me tremendously. But how ridiculous it is? Adults need to help children to go though their problems, not scar them for life.

I just wished that my parents would understand. It really seem like all what matters is school school school school, future future future future. I'm almost done with my senior year and all they care about is school and my education. I've always told my mom, "mom I'm burnt out." but they just always brush it off. It's hurts the most when all they tell me is, "you have to care. You don't care. All you do is okay games and do nothing." I play games to keep me distracted from becoming the worst for myself. I doubt have my older sister to help me this time, and I feel even more alone to the point where I don't want to feel our think of anything. I think my plan is... To continue working and save to money, while doing that I want to try to find sunbathing that I actually enjoy doing. I'm planning to get at least my associates/masters then just work. For sure, I'm gonna cry so much 😂 I'm stressed enough, and no matter how many times I try to explain myself their response to it is, "that's an excuse."

When I tell my dad that I'm learning a programming language, he just dismisses it telling me to study for school. I was trying to learn French through duolingo and I lost interest in it after not telling anyone that I was studying it.

honestly, im jealous of the students who have b's, c's, or d's sometimes and their parents are okay with it. i know i should be thankful about my grades, but theres the constant pressure to keep them up from my parents. i also do not do any music related activities, and i know that my parents are disappointed in me when other parents talk about the awards their children get. I feel like that they do not understand that if i sincerely have no interest in something, it'll drag me down even more. My parents get mad at me when i go one point down on a test, and i can feel the disapproval radiating off of them. it also makes me feel bad that when my friends always think that just because i am asian, i am born to always have good grades. it makes me feel mad angry because they do not realise the amount of work i put in and the hours i spent studying. i also feel jealous when they do the minimal amount of work, yet their parents are always there to praise them. when i try to talk to my friends about my problems, they always brush it off as me overreacting just because i have good grades so they think that therefore i have a perfect life. my friends always try to rub it in when i get a lower score then them, even if it is by 1 point and it makes me disappointed in myself. i can not talk to my parents about this as they do not believe in "fake mental illnesses" [rant over]
