  • Kimber Lybbert is National Board-certified teacher at Moses Lake High school, and her students keep telling her to write a book or give a TED talk. This year, her students argumentative research projects answer the question: What is it like to be a member of the class of 2020? Topics range from the lack of mental health counseling to the emerging mercantile nature of teen sexuality. Their stories reach down inside your core, draw the contents of your chest up through your sinus cavity, and lodge the debris somewhere behind your prefrontal cortex. They are beautiful and powerful and broken and patched together in ways that allow the best light of humanity to shine through them. In her talk she urges everyone to see the strength and potential in our young people. I am a National Board-certified teacher at Moses Lake High school, and my students keep telling me I need to write a book or give a TED talk. I don’t think this is because of who I am, but because of who they are. This year, their argumentative research projects answer the question: What is it like to be a member of the class of 2020? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Every Google Slides presentation, or other online presentation app that is sent to a teacher, put a link to this video. Or if your parents want to see how you did, put the link on several different pages, they will be interested in what it is and why. Or even if you have a typed essay, put the link on there, then if you must, you can delete it before submitting it. I want to send this to everyone, but I am lucky to have very nice parents along with all the other kids I associate with, but still sometimes (even though it’s often rare) they doubt me or tell me about how I can do better even thought I got a B or a low A on assignments and tests. I’m not sure what my friends parents would think of this, so I would leave it up to their kids to show them, and I will show my own if I feel it’s needed. I turned 16 on February 9th and I consider to be very lucky to have as good of parents as I do, but I would definitely love for them to see my side more. I want this to be recommended to everyone like Markiplier’s Meow was not too long ago.

It's like how writers continually criticize their own work, except the line between WIP and publication is hella blurred.

"an idea should not be invalidated by the age of its creator."
inverse of "authority" argument... which states that an idea should not be validated by any quality, other than the idea itself.
consider that the next time you want to use the phrase "all scientists agree," in any context.
which is not nearly as often the case as it might seem, as data requires interpretation.
perhaps it isnt so much "the age" of the person, but that those who lack experience have such a high tendency to be wrong.
this projection of sorts, seems to me, to be just as much of a parenting issue as anything.
personally, i was never treated like this particular factor was reason i wasnt being agreed with... and this is an important distinction to make. disagreement is not invalidation.
fortunately for me, my parents had no issues explaining to me why they thought what they did and i was taught to ask question and not to be afraid what people think.
i force people to explain themselves so that i understand them and can properly judge if it makes sense to me. i was never that one who rebelled against the opinions of the more experienced "because" i felt misunderstood. afterall, theyve been there and are more often than not, in my experience, trying to help.
this isnt entirely altruistic, and should therefore necessarily be considered with suspicion, however, you should always consider the motivations of others...
emotionally, helping the younglings in this way, can feel like a sort of reconciliation with choices they regret.
      its ok to be disagreeable.
its not ok to force others to agree with you.

Someone who drowns in 3 feet of water is just as dead as someone who drowns in 20. Just because you believe your problems are worse than someone else's, doesn't make their pain go away. Something my mom always said was, If everyone threw their problems in a pile, you would want to take yours back. You have no idea the daily struggle that people go through. Just because you go to work everyday, does not make me going to school any easier. Just because you have pay the bills, doesn't mean my math homework gets easier. I try to have a conversation, see your side of the argument and you tell me I'm talking back. Of course I'm talking back, that's how conversations work. All I ask is to be sincerely listened to, and I would give the same respect back. Respect is earned not granted to all whom are older than me.

There was one week of school where I had so many giant essay type assignments due, and so I started working on them as soon as I got them and tried tackling them as much as possible, becoming a vampire and staying up late to try and finish things early, and then nearly handing in things late. There was one day in that two week period where I spent time with a friend for five hours. That is the only time besides limited sleeping and eating that I took for myself. My mom told me that I shouldn’t have spent so much time with my friend, so it was my fault even though I tried hard and sacrificed sleep to get things done that one assignment would be handed in a little late. I talked to my grandmother about that and she told me that “that isn’t fair of her. You deserve much more than five hours of time for yourself to enjoy your youth” and I broke down in tears because that’s exactly what I think everyone in our generation needs to hear.

Teenagers are treated like adults without the freedoms. Maybe that’s why so many adults act like teenagers.
I’m tired of all these stereotypes that all teenagers are just depressed screenaholics with greasy hair and faces that thrive of off rebellion and controversy. We are NOT all like that; in fact, that’s probably less than one percent of teens. And there are adults like that too! So stop acting like it.
‘I’m older and smarter than you.’ ‘I don’t want to hear your opinion.’ ‘Don’t give me attitude or I’ll take away your phone, because that’s CLEARLY all that matters to you.’ Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with widespread and easily accessible tech, with phones and iPads and AirPods. This is gonna sound stereotypical, but most adults DON’T understand and don’t make efforts to. We promote not treating people differently if they’re old, but what about young people?
Why are you all so surprised that we reject the world when the world rejects us?
Why do you teach us to not listen to stereotypes if that’s all you treat us as?
Why is any concern we raise invalidated due to our youth and treated like nothing?
Why do you teach the future keepers of the world that our entire personality can be summarized into one eight letter word that I now despise?

Coming from a millennial who's been wading through the fire for a while now, it doesn't get easier. However that doesn't mean you should stop trying. Our Generations were fed all sorts of nonsense like 'do what you love' and 'you can achieve anything you put your mind to', yet there is just a grain of truth in that. If you put constant work into self improvement then you can do alright, not great, but alright. Don't search for utopia, don't search for perfection because you won't get them. Just do the best you can everyday with the situation you've been dealt and hope to find meaning in that.
Finally, and I know I can't speak for everyone here, but your parents do try. I know it feels like they don't understand you, and you're probably right, but they do their best and you'll miss them when they're gone. Take that one from experience.

I've never commented on anything ever, but this just felt different to me. I love my parents, and I'm especially close to my mom, but sometimes I feel like I have no one to open up to. My solution to deppression and suicidal thoughts was always just making it into a joke, or tell myself that I'm being overdramatic, but in the end, my pain is just as real as anyone's. I know that my parents have had rough childhoods and that their loves have not been easy, but this does not mean that my life is. Even if my problems may be much more internal it does not mean they don't exist, and my parents have a very clear and "happy" vision for my life, but I'm not sure it would be MY life. I want to be happy for myself, not for others. So that means that if I'm 14 and bi my parents should love me for it, even if it isn't exactly what they envisioned for me. Everyone deserves respect and love. No matter who you are, or what you are going through, YOU, personally, deserve love and respect and I wish you the best. There is someone out there who will love the real you. Strive to find people like that, and find your own happiness.

As a big sister, a severely misunderstood daughter, and a mommy, this really grabbed my heart tight. I worry so much about my youngest brother, knowing how much I was out through and him still being at home. He’s reserved unless he’s with friends, like I was. Hiding in his room when he’s home, like I did. He has dreams and ideas for HIS life that our parents don’t understand. Someone commented here something about if a person doesn’t feel heard, they’ll stop talking. And I feel like my baby brother has stopped talking. I feel like I don’t know how to make sure he knows I love him and I value his thoughts and dreams. Children need our support, and they deserve nothing less. They’re people too, whose lives and words are not worth less just because they’re smaller or younger. They deserve to be heard, and we need to listen. To the children and teens of the world, I love you and I’m sorry so many of us failed you. I hear you, I see you, and my heart breaks for you. You are not snowflakes. You’re so much more capable, so much stronger than you’re given credit for. I wish older people could see how much change this generation is making, in the way we view the world and each other, and so much more. They are so much more.

@smileyclowd A tip for psychology and marketing is that it takes us an average of 3 exposures to pay attention to something. 1st time may not register. 2nd time may not make any impact. 3rd time? We may start to feel like the idea is familiar and even take real notice of it. Even if it didn't happen this time, it paved the way for a better future outcome.
It can be so scary to share something important to us with anyone. It's still worth it, especially if you love them, and I hope that you keep trying to be heard and seen (though it's heart-breaking that you have to try so hard). You're worth it whether anyone else realizes it or not. Also - sometimes people can love you and care about you and still be really, REALLY dense about what you need. Everyone's got things to learn and areas to grow up in, no matter how old they are.

Blessed this teacher. I've always told my mom to let me figure things out when I fail. But its always her way or the high way. I'm an artist and the one time I was proud of a drawing, she told me it was too dark and weird and that it needed more color and happiness. Now she gets mad when I refuse to show her what I make. She thinks I'm a bad kid even tho I never have done drugs or touched a cigarette like most teens in my school. There will be times she comes home and complains that it's too warm or there's a dish in the sink. I told her (nicely) that she should be grateful there's someone at home making the mess, eating meals with you, and turning up the heat. It beats coming home to an empty only shell of a house. I've accepted she won't change at this point. She won't hear my cries for love and affection. I shut my emotions off around her to avoid conflict and pain on both ends. She thinks I'm rude and inconsiderate now. I've learned to accept it.
Bless this teacher. I'm glad she understands.

I have a strained relationship (if you can even say I have one) with my mom and a lot of this rings true for me as well. Hang in there and find people who will love and appreciate you for who you are. 💞

Same. My dad and I have such a strained relationship that he will no longer believe anything I do for him that shows my affection is “genuine” I’m not even allowed to call him dad.

And I’m also an artist but I’m way too unmotivated and depressed to do art regularly enough so my dad whenever watching a movie and an artist is there or something he says”oh yeah drawing . You wouldn’t know what that is” so I just stopped showing him my work altogether . Same happened with singing. I always loved to sing. And even tho he’s tone deaf he would say “if u did that on the street ppl would pay u to shut up” so I stopped singing in front of people completely, to the point where I can’t Rembrandt the last time I sung at all.

It's bizarre to see the same kind of talks about gen z that used to come up about my generation. I can only hope my own generation does better at looking at future generations as people and don't too soon forget how older generations looked at us.
I have faith in Gen Z. Y'all are wicked smart and there's so much you can do to make the world a better place. Let no one tell you you're useless. We need you.

we don't need you to need us. we need everyone to stop making excuses and help us, we aren't at fault for most of what's happening around us and it's suffocating having everyone else's waste piled upon us. You don't need us. As much as I appreciate the incentive, we *need* the older generations we can't fix this by ourselves and most of you aren't willing to help and it hurts. Please don't put your hope on us, place your hope on yourself and be the change.

At about 10 minutes in, when she talks about her students, and how they didn't ask for their hardships, I felt that. I get lectures and rack up tardies, because clearly it's my fault I'm injured. I didn't ask for a genetic disorder that turns walking into a risky activity. I stand up, or take a wrong step, and I need x-rays, and maybe an MRI. Because those simple tasks like standing up or walking can rip apart my joints. I ended up with a severely sprained ankle in a boot for 8 weeks, and that wrong step dislocated my knee in both the kneecap, and the actual joint. If you trip, you probably would be fine. I have to check my arms and legs. I'll end up with two dislocated knees, two turned ankles, dislocated hips, sprained wrists, etc. If I get bumped into, I dislocate my shoulder. It hurts, but not much more than they normally do. I am in constant pain. I show up at school, and what I call a headache blurs my eyesight, and makes lights glow fuzzy. A whisper is a shout. My headaches are what other people call migraines. When I'm falling asleep in class, it's because my asthma meds set off panic attacks all night, and I didn't sleep. I didn't ask for my body to be messed up. I never asked for sick elderly parents, or an autistic older brother that shouted with my parents until bed, or being so afraid of getting dragged into the fight that I hide in my room until bedtime. If I'm eating in class, I may not have gotten dinner last night, or breakfast that morning. If I was late to class, ask why. I was probably in the nurse's office for my meds. If you don't see me eating at lunch, I'm not being picky, my lunch was stolen, and I don't have money for lunch in my account. Don't judge my generation for their shortcomings, they are fighting battles behind closed doors you can't imagine. Don't call me a slacker because I walk into my final 15 minutes late, when school started 2 hours ago just because I had breakfast with me. I was late because I had been in the ER all morning, and had just gotten released. My meds make me really sick, and I hadn't dates in two days. Silent, invisible battles still need someone to fight them.

I hope and know you'll do something memorable like speaking about these kind of things for people. Lots more people need to hear someone say this. You're right, invisible battles are still battles none the less. They still cause damage and change lives no matter what that battle is. Please share what your comment says somewhere else, it’ll do good and open people’s eyes.
