this is pretty emotional for me. I've never seen this interview before, and I've been a Hillel student since 1989 when I first discovered the Chilli's. seeing new / old interviews with him after all this time... is pretty special. he changed my life. made me play guitar, hear music in a different way. there was noone playing like him in 1984. R.I.P. Slim
@@Stiegosaurusit’s not dramatic, it’s the truth. he was a singular player, there was no one playing like him back then and he inspired frusciante and countless players since.
Hillel's expressions are perfect. He's half man & half cartoon. Fortunate to have seen him play a few times with Jack & the boys in New York. Peace & love.
I had no idea Alain Johannes started out in the Chili Peppers circle. I saw him play on Chris Cornell's first solo tour. He's an absolute monster of a musician.
What a great, yet simple, elegant, sophisticated, but overall cool and badass style Hillel had. A true rock star! R.I.P.🕊 the real soul of the Red Hot Chili Peppers🌶🎸🔥...✌&💜
Hillel seemed like a quiet and a humble young soul. God bless him for being so good and honorable during his short life on this Earth. Just like everybody he was human and he had flaws, so u gotta love him. God bless you Hillel and I know u have found your peace, good night, sweet prince!!!❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤💕
I would give everything I have to go back and see Alain and Hillel and Chris and Jack back then. It's a shame Jack and Hillel ditched Alain and Natasha to go back to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and even worse Hillel dying so young. Alain recounts how heart broken he was when he got the call about it. It destroyed him for a long time cause they were all close high school friends.
Well the interviewer Tim Sommer was 22 at the time of this interview but certainly doesn't look it; early twentysomethings generally just looked older back then
All my life, I tried to protect my brother, but now he's in gone to heaven, I know he will be well taken care of, because Hillel is there and I am very trusting in that❤️❤️❤️❤️🤙❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a stupid comment. There was nobody playing guitar the way he did then, and there's nobody doing it now. His style is his own, and you hear it in every single thing John Frusciante ever did. But he's just a knock off generic version of the real innovator, Hillel.
@@IOooiiiooOI Don't have an aneurysm....Take your blood pressure meds before you have a stroke. If you're going to label something as stupid, you may want to avoid following that up with a statement in which you contradict yourself. First you say, "there was nobody playing guitar the way he did then, and there's nobody doing it now." Then you go on to say that, "you hear it in every single thing John Frusciante ever did." So which one is it? I never said he was a bad player. I never compared him to John Frusciante. I just think he has a limited range. There's nothing he did that wasn't done before, in terms of technique. What was unique about him was how he meshed with the rest of the RHCP. That had a freshness to it at the time, but I promise you, I could easily pick him out of a blind line up by just listening to him perform, in the same way I could hear BB King, or Buddy Guy, or Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Jimi Hendrix, and instantly know it's them, based on their style.

I saw jack irons in ny backstage at the mescaleros show. I asked him about Hillel and he started to cry. I'll never forget it.

Read Flea's memoir "Acid For The Children" about his pre-RHCP life.
He is one of my favorite musicians along with Chris Cornell, they seems like they born to make songs
@Lisa Surlie Yep, still going strong.

Very interesting interview. Cool to finally hear what Hillel made of leaving the chilli peppers and hearing the guy say he wasn’t a fan haha
Thanks for uploading this! Hillel was a true old soul. Much missed.

I attended Fairfax High school with the original members of the Red Hot Chilli peppers that included Hillel. He looks strung out in the video. RIP
Wow, that's really cool
He was an awesome guitarist and I wish I had the chance to meet him or any of RHCP
wow! so cool what was it like?
He looks tired more than anything else. "...been sleeping on floors..."
No one would look great after touring and sleeping on floors.
No you didn’t
Great interview from analog days, less of worries and more of hope despite more vulnarable life. 2 humble young musicians
Thanks!
Hillel looks so well back then

Hillel looks older here than he does years later in the Chili Peppers.

Hillel's music had plenty of boundaries. It's easy to pick out his tracks because of how limited his range was.
