  • Today, we're going to take a look at a light that's tiny and carryable, while still somehow feeling like a 'real' flashlight: the Nitecore TIP SE.

      Agreed, a keychain light is not a tactical duty light.
      I like to have a hidden strobe function on my EDC light like Olight does and an easy to use strobe on my duty lights. SOS doesn't seem so useful for me at all.

    The THUMB has a lockout which I enjoyed for years w/o issue. Nitecore specializes in small footprint, high output lights where meager runtimes will always be the Achilles heel. A lockout seems an obvious solution instead of demo/daily mode. Great video as always Nick.

  • @zakreviews2623
    @zakreviews2623 3 года назад +4

    The very first Nitecore Tip did have a lockout mode. Unfortunately, it drastically increased standby power consumption versus just being off so that you'd have a dead battery in a few days. While other manufacturers have successfully implemented electronic lockouts, it would appear Nitecore hasn't solved that problem for this hardware.

    'The best flashlight is the one you have with you.' There it is. Got one for my sister. She loves it! Want to get her the T4K (that's 4000 lumens) for her birthday coming up. I hope Nitecore will send you one to review. Btw, the other great thing about the whole keychain or lanyard carry aspect for myself is that it's far less likely I'll set down my keys and walk away unlike several ordinary flashlights I've owned over the years. Many thanks for this review and for your work in general.

    FYI, you probably already know this but Nitecore did make a Tip with lockout. I have several from different generations: one (Christmas edition!) does have lockout. And another has infinite adjustability (ramps up then down), and another has the Nichea led with neutral light. They CAN deal with the bad, why they don't is beyond me. I'm just glad I got the 'good' ones although the goods are not combined into one unit.

  • @superpurplemoon

    Awesome review. Also wished there actually was a lockout mode but glad that the power button has a bit of resistance, at least, so it isnt that easy to accidentally turn it on. In my bag, it's fine. I can imagine it might be harder for those who keep these in their pockets.

    I had a Tini and a Tip 2. Tini often went turbo in my pocket and drained itself, however Tip 2 never did. Recessed buttons on Tip 2 work really good. I also had Tini went demo mode in my pocket, so... whatever lock-up mode it has, there's still a chance it gets unlocked in pocket.
    I presume the quick access to turbo mode can be used in a self-defense situation. A sudden strong light beam into attackers eyes can get you extra 1 or 2 seconds, but if it's locked up...

    I have the Nightcore Tube, which is basically the baby version of this, the cheapest one that they sell. That one only has a single button and as a result the UI is a bit confusing, but at least it has a damn lockout mode (hold for 5 seconds = locked out, hold for another 5 seconds to unlock).

    Hey Nick, you should check out the Fenix EO3R. It’s even smaller (about the length of a normal house key), has similar run times, has a lockout mode, has a red light beacon mode, and has an integral aluminum casing (no screws). It’s not quite as bright as the Nightcore, but still plenty bright for a keychain light, and it costs $25. I compared both and I prefer the Fenix for my EDC.

    • @YuhNinja
      @YuhNinja 3 года назад

    • @prasand
      @prasand 3 года назад

      Rovyvon keychain flashlights are smaller (almost as small as the i1r) and just as powerful, like the A3 Pro (700 lumens) for $35 or the A1x (650 lumens) for $26. They also have Nichia versions if neutral light matters. Olight doesn’t become comparatively useful until the S1R level or above.

      @@jordanstarnes6 yeah I definitely like how the i1r feels in hand (feels more premium), and is better on keys.
      It’s funny I had been giving them away for awhile since Olight periodically gives them as gifts, but I never actually checked it out until four days ago. I felt the one I gave to my mother and was like “ooo this is nice” then picked up another for myself on Black Friday, lol. I prefer the versatility of RovyVon’s max brightness and color of Nichia light, but wouldn’t carry either on my extremely minimal keys. Regardless, I’m sure the i1r will find a place in my EDC.
