I can understand why Johnny Cash would choose this Cohen song to cover- just listen to the words. Even as powerful on their own without music. Thank you for uploading this. 💝
So sparse yet so full, voice is aged but yet still powerful, so simple its is complex and layered with emotions, so fragile yet so forcefull. There will only ever be one man who could deliver that with so much grace, and that was Jonny Cash.
Big Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen fan here. I love Leonard's version and he is the original who wrote it, but Johnny did this song great justice also. I don't think it is an easy song to sing.
We didn't get to hear Johhny very often without his band. Proves he ALWAYS knocks out his performances - even when it's just him and his guitar. Thanks for posting this.
@@catmom1322 Jennifer Warnes was one of the first to record it, and for my money, her version is the best. Although now having heard Johnny Cash's vesion....
@arbagle: Thank you, man, thank you very much for posting this video! It is... like heaven's speaking to you. Every time I watch it... I look into these great old man's eyes, and I would have like talked to him so much. So much more than show biz. That is life.
When I lost Johnny Cash I didn't leave my room for at least 3 days. That was the loneliest time of my life; the heroin didn't stop the pain. No one around me even know who I was crying about.
A guy with an average voice, and a piece of wood, with some strings. How can he create so much feeling with just that? He plucks the string at about 3:30, and it creates such a dramatic pause. Very cool
Could anyone tell me please the strumming and picking patterns Mr Cash is using here? I have been watching and watching and watching this video...lol...and I still can't figure it out...i am very new to the guitar...so any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you.

Wow, Johnny Cash covering Leonard Cohen, and on the Jon Stewart Show?!?! This is simply amazing...
Johnny Cash is among the many artists that I like singing Bird On a Wire. Thank you Jon.

A giant! One of the most beautiful voice in the world ! This song of Léonard Cohen is beautiful but when Johnny sings it , Whaouh ! So moving !

Yes...when Gilmour sings it, with just a harp to accompany him...

The answer is in your question.. passion!!!!
Average voice? You are kidding, right?
I know whis comment is a decade old, but come on. An average voice?? I wish I had a nice deep bass baritone like him lol. My voice is average.
@@Darian-mk1bw it was meant as a compliment though
very nice
@dawilde70 I think a lot of here know just what you mean. Cash was a man greater than the sum of his parts.
👏♥️
just slays me.
@djdavespins JEALOUS!!!
Johnny really shouldve brought out a whole Cohen songs album.
You're right, average wasn't the right word
#RIP Simple + powerfully RAW = ?????
Für Micky u meinen großen Bär...
Average voice? You're kidding right?
why would he sing a canadian song on an album called "American Recordings"? oh well, he did it well.

did you figure it out yet man?
did Johnny covered this song? Or Cohen covered it? (sorry for me dumbness)
Muriel Balmori Johnny covered it.
Yeah, discovered that 5 minutes after my comment, well, both of them, are great song, but idk i like the way that cash sings it
But... whether the man wrote the song or not, once he sang it, it became his.
The strumming is just basic 3/4 time
yes, but he gives a perfect johnny cash feel into it so that it's a great song
