Have to say, as a former sound engineer myself, that the Paisley Park session was absolutely beautifully recorded. I was seriously impressed by the live set-up , which in less capable hands might have produced some hard-to-handle mush at the console. Absolutely loved it, and serious props to John, a true wizard.
I agree. The mix sounds amazing. The people behind the mics don't suck either so that probably helps some
Yeah amazing, too bad about the alto sax though
could have used EQ on the Alto sax though!
As a non former engineer, I loved it as well.
39:04 OMG Petar, he's such an On The One veteran he just does the sound effect himself
I'm so happy you keep making these. Thank you, they're invaluable, both as a fan of your music and as a mixing engineer.
Each clip is a inspiration, seems like hanging w friends, share, laugh learn. The skills, conversation, a peek behind the curtain. This made my day!
John: "I don't high pass everything, only if it needs it"
Also John: "This 10Hz high pass on the horn bus is super important"
Absolutely love the breakdowns, not just for the look at how the mixes are done and busting some myths, but also for the banter.
These mixes are insane. The material is incredible. Here I am in my spare bedroom building frames out of overpriced pine trying to acoustically treat my room...tracking mediocre rubbish that is literally unmixable. These guys are living the dream. I'm living the pipe dream.
yeah i'm not sure i believe that he doesn't throw it on everything, seemed like every eq they pulled up had a chunky high pass on it.
The comedic timing and editing in this is actually really good
Knut-Koupee t-shirt brought back memories for me. I bought my first Strat there in 1990. It’s still my main guitar.
My favourite song from PPS. There's magic all over that album but this tune has got an attitude. It stole my kidneys and sold them on the dark web. 10/10 would order again.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about but this is great
I love it when Cory and Petar lose their shit listening to Sonny T's bass break.
The whole mixing advice here is "get good tracks" and you have to do "'basically nothing" :D
I like that kind of thing. More mixing videos please!
"Mixing is hard"
^^ exactly
Thanks very, very much for sharing this mix analysis on my favorite tune "Assassin". I transcribed the alto sax theme, and can play it reaching only 85% of the tempo so far... Damn it, this is really fast on the right annular and left auricular!!
Amazing musicians, congrats.
Even then that's a damn accomplishment, it's a wild part. Nicely done
Brilliant..... Just brilliant. Love the some kind of monster references again. Wouldn't be a Cory Wong breakdown without them : D
thanks for these cory! the casual aspect makes learning much easier
The editing and post effects are incredible. Humor all the time.
this series on the one is so good, much better then the you tube commercial video’s on mixing , very instructive , entertainig and professional. Thanks a lot.
This is fantastic. As a musician mixing their own music I could watch this type of content every day!
Love this. Still holding out hope for an On The One for a track from Turbo. Thriller 🤞
Paisley Park is your best record Cory! The recording itself is impeccable and everyone was so on point. Its been my favorite album since it was released. Do Lily Pad next!!!!
Yea, great videos and talks! Thanks, Cory and guys!
MAN. Can't, like... I can't even. I'm immediately going to have to watch more of that Paisley Park session right now but before I go... I want to be the dude, like, standing behind Cory with a mean look and big gun just, like, havin' this dude's back.
Loved the conversation on how dry the mixes are. Would have love to hear what they thought about the Prince stuff (given the song was recorded at Paisley) given how much of a fan of drenching in reverb he was of a lot of his songs.
Cool studio. It's dope that they have some hardware boxes that emulate classic plug-ins!
this is awesome sauce...and i love seein how its made
the lingering flame in Petar's hair 😂🤣
John did some amazing work!!! And, he sounds kind of like Diedrich Bader. True wizard.
Fields with the Knut Koupee shirt. Nice.
*slow pan into rehearsal two weeks from now*
Petar: "Hey Cory, do yo...."
Cory: "DO NOT DISERB"
Legends! 🙌
Me and my ramshackle home bedroom studio are light years away. Just stupendous music...playing, writing, mixing here. Seems effortless.
I had doubts, but gotta enjoy peace where it lasts while it does. So see you in Berlin next week.
i love these! Best production insights together with the ones from eric valentine :)
John is so humble, he's just doing "basically nothing" according to him! I guess it helps to have a band as good as this ;)
22:20 Hahahahaaah, John and Petar Pog at the same time!
Mixing is ears, taste, and really good capture! Things i do not have 😅😅
I was in a ska, reggae, funk band, and we always recorded live in the room . Only difference was we DI'd the bass (me) .
It sounded amazing , and the vibe was great.. wouldn't have it any other way... as long as the musicians and the engineers are on it.
Amen, for a good mix. I love a live performance on “tape.”
Gonna see you guys in Belgium in a week or two! Big hype!
Whaat where are they playing?
Sold out, I'll be eyeing ticketswap though 🙂
Same! Big big hype indeed! Stokeddddd
I've learned i just need to add plugins which do nothing and then it will be perfect XD.
Cory: "Whats this plugin?"
John: "Basically does nothing"
XD
alto sax still needs a LOT of eq
😂
omg yes let’s goooo
I can't help but be super impressed with the horns. I know they are reading on the gig, but how long does it take them to learn the parts and then perform as a section? The passages are impressively fast and TIGHT!
Keen to know what processes you are doing in post to reduce bleed (other than muting open mics not used)?
Horn lines kill it here....OMFG
Top quality stuff here Cory. Definitely would love to hear more from the mixing wizard that is John Fields.
Also just wanted to know if anybody who knew the exact name of the Shure clip on mics they were referring to at about 4 mins?
beta 98
Did Michael Nelson or You write the Horns while listening to the blues brothers' "Think" with Arethra Franklin? Cause the trombones notes are so similar I thought it coulda been sampled.
John Fields - best posture in the game
my back thanks me
Awesome video, was this mixed in the room shown here (on speakers shown in video)?
The alto needs EQ :P
but seriously, it is so cool seeing you guys having fun and explaining some of the magic
I‘ve learned that a lot of things that are “doing basically nothing” combined can have a substantial impact 😎
Space Control has to be the next album, it absolutely has to
Great video, what a killer band. I'd be interested to know what's going (if anything) in the automation lanes.
don't do much for automation other than these things....pan horns more towards center when they're soloing, clip gain up soloist and usually also clip gain down other background things to make a little room.....but i don't use a lot of automation with this band because we try to play dynamic enough to be somewhat autonomous
@@CoryWongMusic thanks for the info! I'm not surprised that a such a talented group would need minimal help from automation. Your music is so pure, and raw. Thank you for sharing your gift.
"It's not even doing a db of compression. But it's doing something, right?"
"It's .... I mean so little."
So no then. Right? lol!
It's these little moments that make these fun.
If you have a fantastic band and an excellent recording situation, you just go with plugins "basically doin' nothing"
Great stuff!
I loooove this guitar sound to not be too clean. But I thing what you are complaining about is PI-Distortion. Not neccessarily Preamp-Distortion. If I am right, you could have taken the signal from the FX-Loop split it and use one portion of it for DI.
12:14 me every time I use the vulfcompressor
Cory - did you plug into the normal or vibrato channels of the Deluxe Reverbs for this?
vibrato channels. w vibrato all the way off and reverb all the way off
@@CoryWongMusic it's possible that with the (always on) bright cap that's in the deluxe on the vibrato inputs, that the vibrato channel gets fizzy/dirty faster than the normal channel?
I watched Some Kind of Monster because of you guys . . .
now we’re talking
@@CoryWongMusicThe DNE!
What's the console like box with colorful knob behind Cory? That's so cute!
Neon Egg Planetarium 2. It's a stereo multifx unit with a cool sidechain filter, from England.
@@GizzyDillespee Thank you, I look it up and it sounds amazing!
@@qh_fan i use it on my mellotron and it rules
Killin’ Fields
4:40 it's crazy how the bleed is barely audible considering there are overhead mics in the mix.
OMG for really 80's sound you have the Ibanez AD202! (center of the rack behind Cory) My god, you never sell anything do you? LOL
When you said I’m a fairly strict D.N.E. I thought you were gonna say do not eq lolllll
Maybe the shure clip on mics pick up some vibration from the horns?
A little, but they are internally shock mounted. So very little.. no more than a mic on a stand with floor rumble.
That's what I found with my clip on, but it's a pretty good mic. So I clipped it to a stand for recording. Now I just need to play better!
petter janjick is killing me
"Stereo top, mono bottom."
If a plugin does nothing or barely nothing, isn't it better to just not have it on at all ?
Eh, it's one channel, so it's not going to cripple the processor or anything, and it's there if you need it. No big deal.
Plug-ins that do “basically nothing” often tame the dynamic range, change timbre or take out a little eq in a way that makes more of an impact in the overall relationship of the instruments in the mix.
Everything sounded great on the album, except that the high hats could have used a little EQ. 😂
0:47 "Do Not DiSERB" *immediately smashes like button
1:55 That's the problem with listening on Computer/Bluetooth speakers. 😅
alto sax needs eq
*DNE*
Except my guitar amps were in Shakopee...
Cory please put subtitles on your videos. Thanks a lot
Not sure why I feel compelled to comment this, but you can in fact change the pitch of the Logic click 🤷🏻♂️ another top tier breakdown!
Warwick, pronounced worrick, is a town in England with a famous castle, Warwick basses are German
On the one? It's on the face
WHY SO LIL VIS
Why so little English?
@@morbidmanmusic cus im italian i guess
1612 baby
I"M TELLIN YOU MAN THE LOGIC CLICK IS HARD TO PLAY TO ON SAX THE FREQUENCIES INTERFERE WITH EACH OTHER SO YOU CAN"T HEAR THE CLICK
Control the pokies.
The mics on the horns need some EQ….
Sonny T is a brilliant bass player, but I think Cory overrates him a bit much,he's not Victor Wooten or Mark King or Wojtek Pilichowski, don't get me wrong he is really good, but Cory seems to speak for the majority of people, anyway, whatever blows your hair back!!
Stop Dampening the Cymbals!
mofos making fun of petar =(
you are better than this, bro! make em chase you
Cory acts more and more like a douch, which I believe he isn't.
I don't know it seems pretty cool to me bro. It's spelled douche. I think you're mistaking that for confidence.
I know what you mean, the overbearing vocal delivery like an Impractical Jokers character, in the direction of Gilbert Gottfried, but obviously not all the way there. Douche, tho? I thought, it's a little annoying that he shouting all the time, but whatever. This episode does kinda remind me of the Impractical Jokers guys, a bit overbearing, but the content is more interesting!
Cory DNE! DNE!!
