    In this video we take a look at how I use a custom support plugin in Cura to allow me to place supports only where I need them. This is such an awesome plugin that is very handy for times when Cura is not able to create supports exactly how you want them. After you watch this video you will be off and creating custom supports of your own!

    You can also change the support angle. If you increase the angle closer to 90 degrees the support will only form under angles that are greater than that number. This custom support plug in is also a good tool to have for some situations

    This is probably one of the most usefull videos. I never realized to go to the marketplace to look for add ons like this that are ultra helpful. Just an idea for ya, you should do a video dedicated to marketplace add-ons that are handy to have. I never would have known this existed and I'm sure theres alot of others who don't either. If theres any add-ons you advise I'd love to know about em. Great video man

    I used "tree supports" for the first time, on my last print. They went well, it engulfed the print, a pair of scissors made short work of it!

    hey man, I really want to thank you for this, I've wasted so much material and time on horrible prints that snap with a little force, because of the huge supports. Now I can finally print without wasting 600-700 grams on large prints. This video may be a year old, but god damn did this help me.

    You can also turn up the support required angle- in the video you have it set to 45°, you could set it a little higher.

    The same app is available in the Creality Slicer, thank goodness. I have a Creality printer, so learned using the Creality Slicer, so this was extremely helpful. I just printed my 3rd figure and spent 30 minutes trying to take off all the "everywhere" supports and ended up damaging one arm and even tearing the figure off it's base. With the cylindrical supports, I have been able to eliminate 90% of the supports and all of the ones under the legs that were so hard to get out!

    I think thats in the more recent releases of cura by default now, no need for a plugin. Simply place and size a support blocker, (button under the one you clicked for custom supports) like you did in the video. Then go over to per model settings (button over the one you clicked for custom supports) and the second of the quick options is print as support.

    In my experience, PVA isn't all it's cracked up to be. I have an Ultimaker S3, the PVA keeps breaking at the feed causing the print to stop, and of course on reloading the PVA and restarting, the print, it gets destroyed (2+ Hours to do a 10 min print). The removal of PVA (i.e. "Water Soluble) takes longer than the print. Example: 1/2" square part that takes 22 minutes to print (with support, 11 minutes without) takes 20+ minutes to dissolve the PVA in an ultrasonic cleaner (longer if just sitting in warm water).

  • @jscancella
    @jscancella 4 года назад

    I find the vast majority of time tree supports strike the right balance, come off super easy, and are very stable. It's under the experimental section

    • @ModBotArmy

      I will have to give them a go. It seems a few people have mentioned tree supports. Perhaps I will make a video on them.

    • @jscancella
      @jscancella 4 года назад

      ModBot the only downsides I have experienced is that sometimes it generates supports that aren't close enough or dense enough, but in general they are great. The other downside is they take way longer to generate. For really complicated models it can take 5+ minutes. But when you get better models, using less material, I consider it a trade off worth doing.
      Yeah, definitely do a video on them! More people need to know.

  • @Guardian_Arias

    I like ideamaker more when it comes to that. You can auto gen supports before you slice and then delete them where its unnecessary or add a few more custom supports in a similar fashion. Then you slice it

    I've been using custom supports in craftware for years and the best thing about their supports is that they can be drawn at angles to create manual tree supports in combination with automatic supports. Always surprised me how popular Cura was for so long not having that important freedom for 3D printing and this implementation feels very awkward.
    Great guide though!

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  4 года назад

      I did not know that Craftware has custom supports. Are you using it with a CraftBot printer? Or can you make a profile for another printer?
      I do wish that Cura would implement them naitively.

    • @Bajicoy
      @Bajicoy 4 года назад

      @@ModBotArmy Anyone can create custom printer and slicer profiles for free :) I do not have any craftbot printers but some are worth a shout out to the right buyers. I would really appreciate it if you gave their slicer a try and shared your thoughts. Feel free to let me know if you need any help.
      Other great things about the slicer than custom drawing supports are:
      -snap face to print bed like simplify3D
      - pop up pictures/gifs and text explaining slicer settings which is great for beginners
      I think the Cura developers are very competitive and progressive, all they need to know is that there are people that are doing something better and they will try to improve which is perhaps my favorite thing about the slicer.

      @@ModBotArmy in my personal opinion craftware has the best custom supports feature compared to all slicers ive used ideamaker comes a close second and as @Daniel .power says the way you can draw them out from any angle is the best bit ... the only peeve i have is sometimes removing them as mine has always been a bit of a pickle to remove i would like to know id Daniel also has these problems ??

    Custom supports are very useful. I have some models that require printing cylinders on their sides. It's still challenging to get a good result and drilling out the supports is a pain. I'm using 10% infill for the supports. I'm using an FDM printer and it appears that a resin printer would still have the same issue with supports. A IDEX printer with water soluble supports might be the best choice.

    Thanks! I know this is a 3 year old video but this is what was pissing me off about Cura among many other things. I couldn't figure out how to do custom supports. I forget that stupid Cura doesn't include a lot of funtions I desire without installing plugins. I've been using idea maker for my Artillery Sidewinder X2's and the flashforge slicer for my adventurer 3C. BOTH slicer give the ability to place supports and make it SOOOOO EASY. I can't understand WHY Cura and a lot of other slicers can't be closer to how Idea Maker is. I'm only using Cura because Idea Maker doesn't have any profiles yet for Elegoo printers. I have the Elegoo Neptune Max 3 and having to use Cura or Prusa Slicer makes using the Neptune Max 3 a pain.

    I think this is possible without this plugin a long time ago
    -just add support blocker and move it to the face that u want to be supported (u don't have to take it all the way down, just hit the face that needs support)
    -go to "Per Model Settings (left sidebar just over the Support Blocker button)
    -select "Modify settings for overlaps" and uncheck "Infill only
    -Click on your model and make sure "Generate Support" isn't check
    -Click on the box what u made and "Generate Support" is check
