Honestly it’s not Asal we should blame for this horror show. It’s the PSA. John is arguably the most senior and experienced ref in the world and he’s incapable of consistently making the right calls. Asal is just pushing the laws of the game to their limits and every time he gets away with blocking, grabbing, and hitting his opponents, its tantamount to PSA giving him the green light. This power play circus is just another example of PSA flopping around without a clear vision for what this sport is.
Maybe the reason is simple why PSA do nothing... Fear.. That they will not be "politicaly correct" enough.. Disgusting.. Such approach ruine squash.. And another "his friend" in future could say, ok, if Asal can do it, why not me? And good clean playing players disappear..
It's so unsatisfying to watch Asal, he is obviously an extraordinary player, however he is clearly a dirty player, and it looks bad for squash that they allow him to continue to play the way he does. Ref could've handle the match better, and unfortunately Elias couldn't play a bit better and keep his head. Would've been nice for him to get through, so that at the very least Asal's actions weren't rewarded.

The same with previous situation. 1:31:11 - putting the racket in front of Elias body with wrist using. It is a tramendous misunderstanding that the judges did not see it even with using video referee! Unbelievable.
Make a highlight reel of the blocking and cheating from Asal. Play it for the PSA execs. Ban someone who cheats and blocks even after getting warned and penalized multiple times.
That was hard to watch. Incredible insincerity from Asal. I get he’s trying to win, but there’s so much subtle cheating that most times only his opponent would know. It’s a nightmare from a referee’s perspective. If Asal were British he’d be suspended.
Yes, political correctness university, disgusting.. I hope will nor see more matches of this type.. Where is time of Ramy Ashour clean play.. Should be interesting to hear opinion of Ramy on his colleague..
Terrible spectacle for squash and hugely damaging for the chances of getting in to the Olympics. Asal should be banned for games at a time for this kind of behaviour
it`s very easy to subtly block an opponent. You just hold a bit of tension in the arm on the follow-through, leaving the arm in that position a micro-second longer. Asal is master at it. If ever he becomes world no. 1 for any length of time, I`ll stop watching squash. I hope Elias reads all these comments below and derives some consolation from them.

it's not just that, he even hits the opponent, after the swing he does a counter movement as he did with Makin and also here with Elias. Disgusting, he should be banned for good.
Asal already could write a book of "How to play dirty squash". And that referee could write an entry word to book.. If that guy will go up, I also will stop watching matches... PSA do not understand, that this guy also ruine their repotation?
What's up with this power play rule? So much confusion, it seems like this was implemented without any understanding. Can someone please explain what the heck was going on in game 1?
I thing, even referee did not know, what he wanted to do... Confused everybody.. Worst match ever I have seen... Combination of two dirty men: opponent and referee Elias has no chance to beat...
I will stop watching squash. I'm sorry but the PSA has disgraced itself too much by allowing this guy to endanger others and continue to make a mockery of the game.
I dont understand how are the people responsible , even allowing this kind of squash . Just imagine what lessons are you getting across to the younger generation , who are already cheering for such a conduct.
All cultures need time to grow up.. I admire and like a lot of Egyptian players, like Ramy, Gawad, etc.. But Egyptian spectators possibly not go to watch squash, just to see Their players.. In tenis spectators ussualy cheer up also for good opponent points..
Maybe in future he spread his repertoire of biting. 😂 If if works why not.. And at end of game referee Mozzarella maybe have got Maseratti.. This was tragicomedy,Asal lesson "how squash should not look like"..
The entire match is rather for boxing, kick boxing (low kick) and another martial arts fans. Here it is presented with using racket and all not fair movements like grab opponent right hand, kicking ankles from behind (for that there is a red card and ejection from the field in soccer), hitting an opponent in the face with a racket from above, hitting in the face with using handle of racket, putting the racket on Elias body movement with wrist using (1:31:11 - I can't believe that judges given no let here!) and many others. Asal should rather compete in some sport in the ring, but certainly not on the squash court.
it's not just the racket at the end of its natural swing. If it were that it would not hurt other players trying to play through. It's the force with which Asal keeps it at the end of the swing thereby ensuring it causes a blocking action on their opponent, or even whacking them.
Asal is like a kid and the ref should be there to correct him and make sure there is a safe and fair playground. I think John should retire, he's had his best days, couldn't even keep names apart and let it completely escalate.
Asal is a complete disgrace for the beautiful game of Squash, it's a game for gentlemen , a game of true sportmanship , honesty and respect towards your opponent. The way Asal is playing has nothing to do with this values. PSA has to take action and BAN him for at least a year. Organisations of tournaments also can help by not inviting this player anymore for there tournaments. I really think it's the only way to learn him that his behaviour has to change. No one is bigger than the game itself, even if you have as much talent as him, with this kind of behaviour he isn't welcome to play our beautiful game.
Barely 20 seconds into the game and both commentators who are former players themselves are already puzzled by the refs decision. I know of no other sport, besides maybe rhythmic gymnastics, where this is possible
I'm pretty sure Asal requested a review on Elias's hit early in the first game because he didn't notice that it was a boast. He looks away right before Elias hit the ball and based on the racquet prep it looked like it was going to be a straight drive. And if that's what Elias had intended, then of course the resulting shot (a weak "cross" to middle court) would have been due to a carry. But instead, he subtly boasted it and Asal just missed that fact. Funny to see this kind of oversight at a very high pro level.
Shameful play from Asal and terrible reffing. I don't understand how you can interfere with an opponent's raquet hand multiple times and not get a conduct game. Asal's movement is clean UNTIL the second he loses the advantage in a rally. He will use every push, elbow, and block he can to get a marginal benefit. All of his opponents never have these issues EXCEPT when they play Asal. His game is dirty.
All bad decisions etc aside, powerplay rubbish needs to be either made super clear to all players well before being implemented, or binned completely. Embarrassing to watch.
We know that the real reason that squash can't get into Olympics is because it doesn't bring big money but the Olympics committee will always use this kind of match as an excuse that the quality and outcome of the game depends too much on the quality of refereeing. Sad for squash!
When will the PSA take PROPER action against Asal. I cannot in good faith recommend my casual squash friends to watch the game because of this player and everything he gets away with. If they truly care about the growth of the sport, they must be far far far stricter than they have been at any point thus far
27:39 obvious foot fault. Ball-racquet contact when feet completely out of the box. Do those not matter any more? They happen multiple times in tournaments. Are they monitored in tennis? If Squash wants to be a credible sport, shouldn't the rules be upheld?
If you look at the first 4 rallies of the last game, Asal's back swing is way too exaggerated hence the reason for hitting Elias. I saw that before he even hit him.
This ref keeps confusing the 2 players the whole match. Right from the beginning he said Asal was from Peru and Elias from Egypt. It's a bit of a circus
Asal is the most unfair player ever, such players should be banned for life if they don't stop playing like this. He wouldn't need it at all, he plays great squash but humanly he's the worst.
This guy is going to have an incredibly negative impact on this sport. I wouldn't want any kid who was interested in taking up squash watching this guy.
Can someone start an open petition to gather signatures protesting against this sort of game and bring in reforms. Hand grabbing should be a game forfeit and 2 conduct strokes should be a match forfeit. Let’s bring pressure on the psa . They are the custodians of the game and need to be answerable to the fans
If you hit a shot from the T and remain on the T and your shot is not near your body you do not have to move to allow your opponent a path to the ball. What is wrong with these players? What has happened to the game etiquette?
Just terrible squash. Is this the precedent we want to set? That blocking and grabbing your opponent can get you to reach world 1. There should be a rule that after the second conduct stroke its match. I have been playing for 15 years and never received a single conduct stroke yet Asal gets at least 3 in every match.

We need some younger ref's with a keener eye.
Asal is bandit legitimized by biased referees.
Elias won this game. 1:33:52 - this is pure stroke. Asal didn't return back to the center. He returned back to the rigth side with the ball line and this way to block Elias. Can't belive that referee give a let here. This was stroke and Elias won but referee did not allow it. The same with previous situation. 1:31:11 - putting the racket in front of Elias body with wrist using. It is a tramendous misunderstanding that the judges did not see it even with using video referee! Unbelievable.
To put myself in a very positive perspective, I rather admires all Egyptians except Asal.
Make a highlight reel of the blocking and cheating from Asal. Play it for the PSA execs. Ban someone who cheats and blocks even after getting warned and penalized multiple times.
Really dislike the lack of sportsmanship Asal has and the clear bias of the crowd. wish this tournament was in another country.
What an absolute joke for the PSA. And the people wonder why squash is not in the Olympics. TOTAL CLOWN SHOW
That was hard to watch.
He's already been world number 1
Asal already could write a book of "How to play dirty squash". And that referee could write an entry word to book.. If that guy will go up, I also will stop watching matches...
PSA do not understand, that this guy also ruine their repotation?
Something has to be done about Asal, I have never seen so many interruptions in a game, he is ruining the sport. He is a cheat and refs are too weak!!
He wasn't the one interupting the game. Diego was the only one arguing
It was the most disgusting and pathetic squash match of all time since squash matches have been played on the planet.
Should have been conduct match for Elias at 8 all in the 3rd
Not nice to see, squash should be enjoyed not the darkside 😮
Asal has blocked so long its part of his game....without better umpires it will continue.
Asal is a disgrace to the sport.. grabbing opponent's arm/ racket, never seen such dirty play before
Maybe in future he spread his repertoire of biting. 😂 If if works why not.. And at end of game referee Mozzarella maybe have got Maseratti.. This was tragicomedy,Asal lesson "how squash should not look like"..
Who said cheats never prosper?
there was at least 3 conduct strokes..... asal shd be disqualified kapish
I just cancelled my Squash TV subscription. They did ask for the reason in the formular and I just answered: "Mostafa Asal".
it's not just the racket at the end of its natural swing.
Diego Elias from Egypt and Asal from Peru
Am I the only one
I notices, too! Thank you
Asal is a complete disgrace for the beautiful game of Squash, it's a game for gentlemen , a game of true sportmanship , honesty and respect towards your opponent.
He’s putting me off squash to be honest
Is this squash? Really?
Barely 20 seconds into the game and both commentators who are former players themselves are already puzzled by the refs decision. I know of no other sport, besides maybe rhythmic gymnastics, where this is possible
Dude I don't wanna even see this. I skipped ahead to the Asshøl winning and was like "nope: let paddle-tennis and pickle-ball reign"
Flush this power play nonsense...Its supposed to create excitement not confusion and stress..
I can't watch this citizen playing for even 10 seconds
that was so dirt
All bad decisions etc aside, powerplay rubbish needs to be either made super clear to all players well before being implemented, or binned completely. Embarrassing to watch.
Always lots of unnecessary drama no matter who Asal plays. Not enjoyable squash at all!
This really is a shocker..
We know that the real reason that squash can't get into Olympics is because it doesn't bring big money but the Olympics committee will always use this kind of match as an excuse that the quality and outcome of the game depends too much on the quality of refereeing. Sad for squash!
Disgusting, needs a ban asap
When will the PSA take PROPER action against Asal. I cannot in good faith recommend my casual squash friends to watch the game because of this player and everything he gets away with. If they truly care about the growth of the sport, they must be far far far stricter than they have been at any point thus far
It's not squash anymore😢 This is aggressive boxing.......very very disappointing
Agreed, BUT: boxing only from one side.. Elias was like a boxing bag..
Why they give to ref match like this to blind people......?
the decision must be conduct match and over !
Cheat player ...
Hands down the worst display of reffing I’ve ever seen.
The fact that Asal won just goes to show there's no justice in this world.
At 1 hour and 12 minutes: the first NORMAL PLAYED point. What a match!
what a shocking show of sportsmanship from both of these kids. Couldn't even make it through the match.
Johns gota retire and adjacent will get yah round and about to the ball
27:39 obvious foot fault. Ball-racquet contact when feet completely out of the box. Do those not matter any more? They happen multiple times in tournaments. Are they monitored in tennis? If Squash wants to be a credible sport, shouldn't the rules be upheld?
Unfortunately once again not a good advertisement for squash
Cheat, not good for squash.
WTF referee
Mazzarella and that video ref need to be retired. Pronto!
it was 9-11
why is Asal even playing in this tournament after holding Heshams racket and blocking Makin..
Squash like this won’t make it to Olympics ever. This sport has no clear rules but depends on the umpire of the day.
👍
If you hit a shot from the T and remain on the T and your shot is not near your body you do not have to move to allow your opponent a path to the ball. What is wrong with these players? What has happened to the game etiquette?
True hero is Assal
Send letters to the PSA and complain about Asal. Pressure works.
Just terrible squash. Is this the precedent we want to set? That blocking and grabbing your opponent can get you to reach world 1. There should be a rule that after the second conduct stroke its match. I have been playing for 15 years and never received a single conduct stroke yet Asal gets at least 3 in every match.
It was infuriating to watch. Suspend or even ban Asal from the game. He was already suspended for this kind of behavior. He does it absolutely deliberately. The way he is playing is a disgrace to this sport. Disqualification would be the minimum but I would also suggest an even longer suspend.
I've never known why Joey and co constantly big up Mozzarella referee over the others, apart from the fact they seem to favour the Brits, because he was absolutely shocking in that first match. Haven't seen the rest yet but my god, poor Diego has suffered at the hands of these eejits for far too long and please will they finally start picking up Asal's very subtle movements (finally got him this time but he's been doing it all his career!)
Asal: wins
Squash worldwide: loses👎
Other players should simply forfeit every time they are up against him. He will be number one without a single rally played, that should send a clear message.
