Wonderful opened minded approach. Thanks for sharing the idea of variation in practice. We are taught repetition is key, which it is. But you are so oh so right with variation baby. Thank you Bryan! Repetition + variation =

35 years of playing trumpet and never ever had anyone told me to mind the effort while playing. It`s even more astonishing as I am a management consultant for efficient working.... Sometimes you just don`t see the connections. Now I can play high and loud and technically sufficient for my duties but I overpowered everything and therefor had no endurance - well not enough for what I want to play. Thanks to you I work on efficient playing for some weeks now and feel great. Due to covid-19 I had no chance to test my new playing in real life so far - but it feels good. The biggest challenge for me is to coordinate all the different "construction sites" (as we say in austria) besides my job, family ... - breathing, airflow, embouchure, upper register, low notes, and (most of all at the moment) a controlled response. What I wanted to say is - thx for this short clips and the very analytic approach which fits me perfectly. If you come to visit Austria I really would like to meet and discuss some topics. Daniel

Hi Daniel. I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful, and that I’m challenging you to think about things in a different way. I’ve been a frequent visitor to Austria in the past 20 years, and I’m overdue for a return. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back before long, at which point I’d be delighted to meet up.

Bryan this particular video addressed something much more profound than it appeared. The psychology or state of mind (mindfulness) of playing helps us all play much better, easier, and more musically. I like your videos and specifically the whys and the rationale behind the concepts. It seems to me you just scratched the surface of something very important with this video. I wonder if you would consider doing a couple more that go into more depth on this aspect of playing. For example, when practice is not going well - how to flip the switch to create relaxation and a fresh start, or when we are at a gig and we're fighting either the pitch or horn - how to gain immediate perspective to adjust, or to set appropriate and easily accomplished goals in our practice sessions. Thanks, Mike in Vegas

Thanks for watching, Mike. That’s an interesting suggestion. It’s something I’ll have to give some thought to, particularly in how best to present it, but it’s an excellent idea. Thank you.

Well the positive aspect of playing is for sure the most fundamental! Otherwise it wouldn' t be "playing"! Nice point. Love the series.

Thanks for this video Bryan. In my practice I have developed a similar concept I think. One suggestion I have to make this and other videos a bit more helpful is to include a little playing. The discussion is great, and an actual demonstration is worth 1000 words and shows us how easy trumpet playing is supposed to be. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment, Chris. The suggestion is appreciated, although this video is almost 2 years old and one of the early ones that I made. I try to play in all of the more recent ones.

Hi Bryan! I'm really enjoying these videos. You mention that your brief warmup routine is the only part of your routine that doesn't vary. I am curious what your brief warmup routine consists of? Thanks!

Hi Richard. Thanks for watching. The warmup is the subject of my next book, which should be out in the next month or so. We’ll be posting more info and accompanying video about it in due course.
I wondered who would bite, and ask that question! ;-)
