I must have seen The Searchers fifty times and I hope to see it fifty more times. John Wayne's performance was worthy.of an Oscar. This song gives me goosebumps every time.
This could be his greatest performance - when he was given the chance - he proved to be a fine actor - western actors and indeed comedy performers are not taken as seriously as they should be - many a western has contained a great performance - this is one of them
The end scene and this song always tear me up ,my Dad loved this movie . I always think of watching this with him . He died in 1992 when he was 72 , im now 70 and it still tears me up all these years later.
Totally agree with the other commentators, best western of all time. Good seeing John Wayne as a Confederate. I love that scene where the Duke sweeps up Natalie Wood into his arms and says "Let's go home Debbie". No other Western has ever wrought so much emotion out of me......Absolutely fantastic!!
One of the things I love about this film is that they let John Wayne who was beyond a megastar play a hurting, ptsd ridden, angry man driven to hatred and rage by the loss of his loved ones!! He was not a classical heroe here. Much of the story is about his redemption. When he chased her down and caught her, first time I saw the film, I was afraid he might kill her. Much of that film was a tragedy worthy of Shakespear. He picks her up, really looks at her and says "Lets go home Debby" and you know his soul won out! Wayne made so many formula films that some do not wish to recognize that he was one of the best American screen actors ever. Some simply hated admitting this because they disliked his politics!! He carried a presence like few others! Even his walk cannot be properly imitated. And John Ford and Howard Hawks seemed to bring out the best in him!! He is missed!!
This is the movie Wayne should have gotten an Oscar for. I saw this in the theater when it came out and it's still the best western ever made all these years later.
John Wayne said himself that it was his favorite if all the movies he made--i can watch it at any time and still enjoy it--i particularly like the Searchers theme, which is the song title although a person might think it should be called Ride Away, but it isn't
The music, the story, the spectacularly rich colourful panorama, just love this film. Thank you Mr.John Ford. And all these wonderful people aren’t with us anymore. Makes you think how transient life really is. R.I.P.
Saw this movie as a young kid at a log community building in Alaska. I remember sitting there in the dark watching the images in all their bright color move a ross the screen. When " Scar" discovers Debbie in the cemetery, I just a boot jumped out of my skin!! That moment still gives me shivers. I was about her age at the time. Our life, at that time, was just about like her's in alot of respect. Homesteading, we had no electricity, central heat or plumbing. The desert was from removed from our life in the forest but, similiar. No Indians but dangerous animals and cold. I have never forgot that night watching this film & have seen it numerous times. I still think back to that each time.
Classic Americana. Still can't put it into Words what this Music 🎵🎶 & the Whole Film? Meant even in it's First release or over the Ages. IT'S Just Timeless.
I absolutely loved these Sons of the Pioneers (along with Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer and Roy Rogers, of course!). Their voices were strong, unwavering and manly, and their harmonies were, without fail, impeccable!!
Most people don't know that when Frank Sinatra left the Dorsey band about 1943 or so, Ken Curtis was Sinatra's replacement...yep...Ken's voice was that good...
Got to ride on horseback through monument valley. The place is a deeply spiritual and haunting place. There are man made ancient things that defy the explanations our fake scientists and historians give us. I suspect it is an ancient ruin! It is a very special place.
FANTASTIC, my favourite film, great song by Stan Jones. I just weep. I visited Monument Valley in 2010. Epic, awesome, spiritual, just overwhelming, and the Navajo are its custodians, bless them.
È forse il più bel film western, con un JOHN WAYNE stellare. Stupenda la scena iniziale e finale con la porta che si apre e si chiude. MUSICHE da sogno. JOHN FORD grandissimo regista.
Especially at the end--when the door closes on Ethan as he walks away, it used to make me so sad; It's the knowing Ethan just didn't fit in anywhere anymore. He would wander between the winds, like that Commanche corpse he blinded.
the greatest western movie of all times, never again will we ever see the likes of john wayne on the the silver screen again gary cooper, jimmy stewart, alan ladd and so many of those great western actors are gone, thank god the sons of the pionneers gave us the best theme song for a western movie, the searches will live on forever
I swear the combination of Lorena and this song makes me cry everytime I watch the Searchers. You did a great job! The Searchers has slowly become one of my favorite movies of all time, Everyone was at their best on this film including the Sons. They just don't make movies or music like this anymore which is a damn shame. Speaks to my soul for I am also a searcher. For what, I don't know.
Glad you enjoyed it. Anytime the Sons sang a Stan Jones song, it was like magic. I consider it to be a perfect film. Wayne should've got an Oscar for this picture.
Such a great movie with the Duke and yes the music . I went to see the movie as a child of six year with my mother . At the time the Suez war and the Hungarian up rising were on Pathy news in black and white before the main movie . It looked to me as a six year old , the end or the world was coming . But the movie made everything alright again .
Le meilleur de John Wayne Chercher sa nièce durant 5 longues années la libérer la ramener parmi les siens beau travail quel bel acharnement Excellents acteurs Très bon scénario Un régal de revoir ce fabuleux western
Colin March I was in the valley on horseback about 12 years ago. You will not be disappointed. The place is sacred, beautiful, haunting and surreal. You feel the ancientness of the place. It's beauty can not be put in words. Even a master like Ford and his master cinematographers could not really catch it with that widescreen technicolor process. But he is about the only film maker who came close. Go and see it on horseback if you can and you will never be quite the same again. Just be careful that the duke and Gary Cooper don't ride out at you from John Ford's lookout point. It feels like they could.
Absolutely beautiful! So inspiring and brings back so many wonderful memories of this movie, John Wayne and the Sons of the Pioneers....and the photos were placed just in the right positions. Thoroughly enjoy. Be proud~~you did very well!!
Donna Polockow Thank you so much for that. I feel that the combination of The Sons of the Pioneers beautiful singing, to Stan Jones' wonderful lyrics, and Max Steiner's wonderful score just elevated John Ford's already flawless direction. I love a lot of John Wayne's movies, but the ones he made with Ford were masterpieces.
I had only heard the first and final stanzas to this song. I suppose that's because they are the ones featured in the film. So thanks so much for posting the whole lyric. Have to say that that final stanza is just perfectly matched with the arresting closing sequence which surely has to be one of the finest moments in American cinema. Ford (from his years as a silent film director) certainly understood better than any one that idea of just letting the images and the underlying music tell the story.
Really impressive EyeShotFirst, so plain it was a labor of love. A year or so back I was able to see it on the big screen at a restored old movie house THE PINES THEATER in Lufkin Texas. Just awesome. I still tear up at the ending, Ethan standing outside alone. "has to wander forever between the winds."
Thanks! I would love to see it in the theater. It does look great on blu-ray, but something about film being projected, has a certain charm. John Ford made such beautiful films. One of the first directors to show the beauty in the harshest environments.
***** If you ever get the chance to see it on big screen do it because Monument Valley just takes yer breath away. You can tell Ford loved the place. That shot of Wayne as Ethan at the beginning reminded me of something Harry Carey Jr. wrote in his book COMPANY OF HEROES. Carey said that of all the films he made with the Duke, THE SEARCHERS was the most difficult because something about the character of Ethan Edwards touched Wayne deeply and instead of being his usual easy going, friendly self, he was sullen and withdrawn, impatient and snapping at people like Ethan.
When I used to 'hang out' with Eddie Brandt at his store, a lot of saturdays we would go out to lunch with the 'Survivors' of the Son's of the pioneers, along with Billy Barty and Pat Butrom. Great times !
My favorite western, john waynes best performance and all this made the better by a great sound track . Haven't seen a good western since 'unforgiven'.
Yeah, Unforgiven was almost the last ride for that era of westerns. It's a great film, but I'll always look at it as the genre's funeral. I don't think anyone's quite touched The Searchers as far as visuals are concerned, perhaps Kurosawa or Leone. There's not a great director that doesn't acknowledge this film as inspiring them in some way. You can see broad impressions of it everywhere, including Star Wars.
Undoubtedly John ford's greatest film. A masterpiece without question. Why Ethan Edwards did not enter the house is because he knew he would not be welcome because of the kind of man he was. I mean not the kind you would want to be around your children.
Wow! An excellent effort and a worthy homage to the beautifully sung theme to a John Ford classic. The song and the film complement each other as Wayne's character searches for a lost relative whilst coming to terms with his own feelings and prejudices. Thank you for posting this.
Asked for a list of his favourite filmmakers, Orson Welles once replied, “I prefer the old masters, by which I mean John Ford, John Ford and John Ford…......With Ford at his best you get a sense of what the earth is made of.” British Film Institute
This, and the 3rd man, are two movies whose closing scenes contain no dialogue. The audience is left to imagine the thoughts of the people on camera, and of course, everyone's imagination is different. Does John Wayne ever return to the cabin? Does Holly ever try to see the girl again. We're left wondering. Genius
The greatest western ever. Anger. Humor. Love. Hate. Forgiveness. Sorrow. Fear. Happiness. Faith. All in a western.
Sons of the Pioneers were awesome, today’s music can’t even begin to compare!! Right ???
I must have seen The Searchers fifty times and I hope to see it fifty more times. John Wayne's performance was worthy.of an Oscar. This song gives me goosebumps every time.
This could be his greatest performance - when he was given the chance - he proved to be a fine actor - western actors and indeed comedy performers are not taken as seriously as they should be - many a western has contained a great performance - this is one of them
Concordo com você , eu olho pelo menos uma vez por ano a mais de trinta anos , e o melhor de todos .
I saw it when it first was released - I was very young, but I KNEW that this was a GREAT FILM. The theme is excellent.
The end scene and this song always tear me up ,my Dad loved this movie . I always think of watching this with him . He died in 1992 when he was 72 , im now 70 and it still tears me up all these years later.
I'm 81 and I still tear up at the end too.

Totally correct. Many never understood his auteur approach, the mix between persona and character roles, realising a specific artistic vision.
This is the movie Wayne should have gotten an Oscar for. I saw this in the theater when it came out and it's still the best western ever made all these years later.
It's true, and it's also one of the most emulated films as far as shot composition is concerned. Even Star Wars references shots from the film.
AFI rates it the best western of all time. Snubbed by the Oscars according to MSN story out today.
Best Photography too.
John Wayne said himself that it was his favorite if all the movies he made--i can watch it at any time and still enjoy it--i particularly like the Searchers theme, which is the song title although a person might think it should be called Ride Away, but it isn't
Yes he should have gotten an Oscar for this and for Rio Grande.
I am 86 …this story and song has always been inspiring when tough times come! Love the the Sons of Pioneers
I always tear up at that last scene when Ethan is left alone on the front porch. He turns and walks alone into the empty expanse of the front yard.
Never forget old Moses on his rocking chair , thank you kindly for the hospitality of your chair mam 👍
geo 752. Mosè e la sua sedia a dondolo. Indimenticabile.
The oscar would ''nt be enough for The Searchers. This film is really the best ever.
You can't beat the harmony of the Sons of the Pioneers!
Quite possibly the best western movie ever. Love the song.
i'm 19 i live in France and we watched and worked about this movie 2 days ago in class with my English teacher. the last scene was so sad OMG!
The music, the story, the spectacularly rich colourful panorama, just love this film. Thank you Mr.John Ford. And all these wonderful people aren’t with us anymore. Makes you think how transient life really is. R.I.P.
😘
WHERE HAVE ALL THE HERO'S GONE......RIP ALL OF YOU.....
Max steiner. The godfather of movie scores.
This was one of my Late Dads favourite film. When I hear this song, reminds me of my Dad.
I agree about everything above. I’ve seen the movie several times and love Ride Away!!!
The acting, the direction, the photography, the music. There is no other movie like it.
The Best Western Film ever. I've watched it over and over again.
One of the greatest Westerners produced. I have lost count of how many times I have watched this film.
Ya. Me too. It gets better every time i see it!
This film always reminds me of my late Dad, who passed away in 2018d day after me Mum.
He just loved this western.
1956: John Ford. John Wayne. Max Steiner. The Sons of the Pioneers. Giants are at work here.
That's icing on the icing on the icing on the cake for me, and none are stepping on each other's toes.
Giants!
Not a better movie ever made
Don't forget Jeffery Hunter!!

Still greatest western ever. So sad when Wayne just walks away at the end
Best western ever made. Cinematography is incredible
Can't beat the opening song for the best Western ever made !!
Ken Curtis (Festus) was a member of this group.

Wayne's best performance!
Red river close second
By far
True grit also.
"The Searchers" and "The Shootist".
FANTASTIC, my favourite film, great song by Stan Jones. I just weep.
I visited Monument Valley in 2010. Epic, awesome, spiritual, just overwhelming, and the Navajo are its custodians, bless them.

Still a great movie

One the greats from John Ford and great actors.
Titan of all the best western movies ever made God bless them all.🙏🤠
You can't get better harmonies than these guys. Perfect song for the movie too.
It's not the best western of all time - it's the best film of all time.
Haha, great comment. I think you just might be right.
Absolutely right.
Best exploration of the best and worst in all of us ever made.
Could be. Damn well could be.
You can't beat great western movies.
Tear up every time I hear this song...thanks. Great job.
Thank you very much. That's why the golden age was truly golden.
Especially at the end--when the door closes on Ethan as he walks away, it used to make me so sad; It's the knowing Ethan just didn't fit in anywhere anymore. He would wander between the winds, like that Commanche corpse he blinded.
I cry too

We must add Randolph Scott to the list of great actors.
Rest in peace to all of them.

John Wayne won the Oscar for True Grit, but I thought he did a wonderful job in The Searchers. I loved the way this song was put together, great job.
Thank you very much. John Wayne artiste talentueux et inégalé 👍🤗🙋💕💕💕

Ford had the eye of a great artist as he painted the American West of his imagination.
Unbelievable film and song, thank you. Been dreaming about monument valley since I was a child, next year the dream will happen 👍
Oh wow. I hope you enjoy your trip. It's a place I'd love to see.

I think it's John Wayne's best performance. I wish people would still make westerns of that scale. It's been a long time since we had a good Western.
Wish they made movies like this today
When I used to 'hang out' with Eddie Brandt at his store, a lot of saturdays we would go out to lunch with the 'Survivors' of the Son's of the pioneers, along with Billy Barty and Pat Butrom. Great times !
You are truly lucky. I wish I could've met some of the old Sons of the Pioneers members. All of them were gone by the time I got into their music.
Sensacional. Um dos melhores que ja vi. Marcante. Uma referência de cinema de qualidade.

This movie broke the western mold.
