      I used to live in San Jose, I left in 2017. Not sure if the "Filipino BBQ" restaurant (yes that's the name) is still in business. It's located at the corner of Aborn and White. If they are still in business they're worth your time to visit and try. Price is about the same as in Fil-Am in Daly city. Good luck.

    Team savory, only because in Thailand, our peanut sauce is served savory. Param is a common peanut dish served with greens and meat, topped with peanut sauce and a touch of chili sauce. I'm also surprised you didn't try Breadbasket, which is right across the street from FilAm and is a popular bakery for their ube infused goods. There's also Tselogs down the street who serve an incredible young coconut pie by the slice! Daly city is an incredible hub for Filipino foods. I only wish there were more veggies in their common cuisine.

  • @She_522
    @She_522 Год назад +12

    Next time you have the Kare Kare, eat it with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). It’s a must! The saltiness balances out the sweet/savory (lol) of the peanut butter. 😋

  • @imbanditspal

    Great video! Filipino food rocks! So, peanut butter can be treated like tofu - you can make it sweet or savory, depending on what you want. As for the halo halo, ask for a bowl :)
    A part 2 would be great - visit 7 Mile in Brisbane and FOB Kitchen, Lumpia Company & Senor Sisig in Oakland. As for another cuisine: Russian or Ethiopian for something different. And bring your mom! She's great!

Anyway thanks again! ...I'm hungry now. Haha😂

    So mixing halo-halo is easy. Just dunk the spoon in one side of the glass. Tap it a few times in that same location til you see the shaved ice slowly losing its height. Just keep dunking it in that original location until you feel the top (ice cream/flan) is safe inside the glass. I don't mix the flan too much bec I want to be able to bite in to it but it's up to you. Enjoy!

    As always - an excellent tour of Bay Area restaurants! Thank you Mei Mei! I've added more places to try. I'm up for many more of this same kind of content. More Filipino (it's not a cuisine I know well), Hawaiian, different regional Chinese cuisines, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian... I love Asian cuisine! And I'm afraid my vote for 'peanut butter' alone, being savory. However it is added to tons of dipping sauces and American desserts - which is when it becomes sweet. It's an ingredient that can go either way depending on how it's used. Keep up the great work! You are my favourite American food blogger!

    Real natural peanut butter with NO added sugar oils or anything is savory. Most “peanut butter” people use has sweeteners so that could cause the confusion.

  • @Allergydemon
    @Allergydemon Год назад +3

    I personally think of PB as a neutral that can be made savory or sweet depending on the application. kind of like cacao, it can be made into sweet chocolate or added into a mole or BBQ sauce that's savory

    Peanut butter is sweet. If I eat a scoop by itself it’s a sweet snack. If it’s used in combination with something sweeter like chocolate or jelly, it adds a savory contrast bc it’s nutty but that doesn’t place it into the savory category AT ALL omg

    the peanut butter debate is tricky because i typically think of it more in a sweet context like peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and chocolate, but i do understand bird and jessica saying it tastes savory - that being said, i would not consider a plain peanut butter sandwich savory. it just depends on what it's with for me!

    Thank you for featuing Filipino cuisine. There are a lot of Filipino restaurants and bakeries at the SF Bay Area. During and after the pandemic, there were a lot of new bakeries that popped up that feature Filipino inspired flavors too. La Kalidad has their own storefront somewhere in San bruno where they feature Venoisserie and other Western baked goods with Filipino-inspired flavors, Bibingka Bites, another South SF institution where they feature their bibingka cupcakes with Filipino and modern flavors like salted caramel, chocolate, cheese, pandan, macapuno. Another that is worth visiting either at the Livermore Farmer's Market or the Niles Farm'er's Market is Harina. Harina is another bakery where a couple opened in 2021 - they have pandesal, croissant, ensaymada that feature Filipino flavors. This bakery excels making bread. You got to try this. Tapsilog Express is in San Leandro where they specialize in garlic fried rice, tapa or any meat, then egg. But they serve other dishes. Goldilocks in South SF - only go to this branch to get their Fresh lumpia because they make it fresh and made to order. Another is Valerio's Bakery where they have multiple locations across the SF Bay Area. You will be overwhelmed what to buy there because everything is deliciously good. I highly recommend getting their Chicken siopao located in the refrigerator, Freshly made turon in the display case, pan de sal or any Filipino breads and pastries, and their kakanin (steamed rice cake desserts). Get the sapin sapin, biko or bibingkang malagkit. You cannot go wrong when coming to this bakery. Sunshine Bakery in Vallejo for their signature Filipino Caramel Cake which almost taste like Estrel's in the Philippines. Elite Bakery in Union City is a Guamanian - Filipino bakery that sells their signature Mango and Guava Chiffon cakes. Order the guava chiffon cake in advance. Luisa and Sons is another bakery, but I like to go there with their fried lumpia and their walnut tarts, yema balls and their other tarts they have in the display case. Another one is Kalesa which means carriago in Tagalog. This is a family size restaurant serving Filipino food. This food just taste like my mother's and grandmother's home cooking.I highly recommend the Gising Gising - a coconut based stew with a variety of vegetables that is steamed and braised. Sinigang, Tinola, Kare Kare, and ask the waiting staff - they are helpful, courteous and know what are great recommendations to eat. They also serve tapsilog for the picky eaters.
