I’m so proud of you for working hard on your Thai! I am currently learning Japanese and I want to learn Korean next (because of you 😊) I hope to know as many languages as you do one day ❤
hi! im thai. your videos have rlly helped & motivated me to learn languages. right now im studying french and brazilian portuguese. so yeah good luck on your thai learning journey!
I've been learning Danish for a month now. Watching your videos made me realize how important it is to find joy and purpose in learning a language. I am so proud I've made it a whole month, thank you for giving me the inspiration and proper mindset! :)
OMG that feeling when you start to understand tv shows and movies! it gives you the boost that it's so helpful and needed sometimes... you can see your effort paying off 🥰 definitively going to give Drops a second chance after this. Thanks for the constant update Lindie, they're very motivational 💜
5:46 That feeling of progression in real life, when just listening to music or watching television in the language that you are studying, is like the BEST motivator ever. Makes you feel proud and gives you the confidence to only get stronger. :)
It's so cool that you also started learning Thai!🥰 I started learning Thai with my Italki teacher about one year ago but I'm still struggling with the Thai alphabet. The tones can be so confusing, especially since finding a complete structured table that explains all the tone possibilities is very challenging and resources are scarce. My teacher made me the perfect table so I'm finally getting the hang of it, but from all the languages I have learned/am learning so far, this is without a doubt the most difficult one (but also the one with the best bl series ;p). If you're ever interested in exchanging resources or fun Thai content, let me know! I have lots I could recommend you already 🤩
One of the HARDEST habits to get out of when learning Japanese for me was writing Romaji. I kept the mindset of "Oh, I don't need that, that's not important", because I had expected the alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) to be like the ABCs, but BOY was I wrong! If your target language has a different writing system, don't think "oh, that's WAY too hard for me to learn, so I just won't learn it" but instead just do it! It only took me a day and half to memorize both Hiragana and Katakana and an extra day to maintain both without the help of any chart. Kanji came later. Always worry about Kanji later. Have fun on your language journey!
Hi Lindie, just checking back to see how your Thai studies are progressing??? I’m looking forward to seeing your update video(s). My Thai studying is moving at a snails pace. I was making (what I thought was) great progress using Rapid Thai for the alphabet, but reached a point where I felt I got off track, so I spent some time reviewing lessons and notes. I can honestly say what Thai letters I have learned have stuck in my head. (Yay! 🎉) Just not moving at a pace I think is normal. Then again, I’m not the greatest student. Anyway, hope you are doing well and kicking some butt with your studies!
สวัสดีครับ you're doing great!! I've been learning Thai for almost a year now (it gets better, i promise 😅) and it's funny to see how many resources we use in common!!! 55555555 เก่งมากๆนะครับ
I am starting Thai in December. I already figured out that the writing would be one of the tough parts because of the number of chaaracters and how similar many of them are. So I am pre-learning the letters. I have an app named Write Thai and it is super simple. You just trace the letters and hear their sounds. After Japanese, I think it helps if I can read before I start learning. For me, romanization also makes my pronunciation worse, so I like to avoid it. Thanks for this list. Iam going after Thai as an intensive process too, so this should help a lot. Got a lifetime subscription to Drops, so definitely dustign that off.
I totally agree with your comment. 👍 I’ve been “pre-learning” as you call it since mid October after buying to books that were too advanced or made it clear I needed the alphabet as a better foundation. I too use the Write Thai app. It’s simple and keeps the learning chunks to a manageable time length.
I just got inspired by the consonants flash cards! I struggle so much to learn the Thai alphabets. Maybe I should also try this method. Thanks Lindie 😊
I began learning Thai around a month ago, and I would say my main problem is that I don't entirely know how to go about learning grammar. Like you said, people use different versions of the romanization of Thai, and because of that, I ended up teaching myself to read and write (I for some reason struggle with recognizing vowels). So I just read short stories and try to learn the grammar from that. I am only able to use free resources, so I wonder how far I can go with it. But your videos centered around Thai are fun to watch, especially with how you seem like Thai is throwing you around every chance it gets lol.
Hi Lindie. I have been learning Thai for 3 years while living in the US, and it is not as hard as it first feels like. After a while you will get used to the tone rules by practicing reading. The rules are vey helpful as you can see the tone of a word by the way it is spelled and you don't have to memorize the tones of each word like you need to do in Mandarin or Cantonese. There is a fairly inexpensive book by Arthit Juyaso called "Read Thai in 10 Days" that I found very helpful, especially when it comes to consonant clusters. Also, if you like ละครไทย, try "Tunnel" and "Insomnia". They are pretty good. For TV shows I personally like ร้องข้ามกำแพง (The Wall Song) and หัวท้ายตายก่อน (The First and Last), although they will be super hard to understand for beginners.
I am learning the Thai alphabet as well. I have memorized all 44 consonants using sources that all show the original font. Now I am in Thailand and I find many menu’s, signage and advertising is wrote in a modern font. So far I have found 36 of the consonants I need to learn again as the two fonts can look quite different making a major set back in my reading of Thai script. So be aware you will need to memorize both fonts. There also seems to be a sort of written font but, I don’t even want to talk about that
I also use drops before bed for Korean in the same way, that's so cool ^^ seeing your journey with Thai has been really interesting, I can't wait for the next video~ 화이팅!
I have a recommendation for series, definitely a must watch; Hormones The Series! it actually sparked my curiousity to thai language more, even though I didnt really follow because I kinda gave up in the aksorn, but watching this, I think I'll try again one more time.
I've found the channel 'Learn Thai with Mod' to be very useful. It's been around a while so it has a wide variety of videos on grammar, vocabulary, set phrases etc.
I've stumbled upon Drops a few weeks ago and it's fantastic! You can learn a lot of languages on there, it's a great supplement to textbooks and lessons (I'm using it for Japanese and Mandarin)
Thanks for sharing how you are learning thai! I am trying to learn Thai myself and your videos are helping me get started! Could you share how fast you are trying to learn the language or what your expectations are? That would be helpful in helping me also know how much time I should dedicate to get to a certain proficiency. Can’t wait for the next update!
Highly recommend a Thai movie called Love in Siam. It's an old movie but it's sooooo good and I still want to watch it now. Its Ost Ticket is also really good and I also highly recommend it.
Great to hear about your thai journey ^^ my focus with thai is only understanding it when listening, not speaking, reading or writing, cuz not enough time to study >_
if anyone would like a new refreshing exercise, i have one !! personally i love making some progress with whatever language im learning, then choosing a book i like, opening a good, descriptive paragraph with no dialogue, and translating it from memory into my target language. you'll get a sense of your abilities AND see how far you've come so easily in the future
Italki has both structured and unstructured lessons. There are professional teachers and then there are tutors. Both can teach structured and unstructured lessons as well as conversational. I teach on italki and a lot of italki teachers (not me) teach on preply. Italki takes a smaller commission from teachers than preply. So when you buy a lesson more of your money is going to the teacher vs the actual website. Italki takes 15%
I only have one resource in common with you--italki 😆 That's fine of course, everyone should find the resources that work for them. I might consider giving Preply a try for more structured grammar lessons though. 🤔 I'm not sure, I might wait until I complete more of the lessons in the apps I'm using first. I wish you luck learning Thai, Lindie! 😄
I found the alphabet easy to learn. A few tips: 1 memorize the high and middle class consonants first. The majority, lower class will be all the rest. 2. I made a 1 page table of all the combinations of class/tone mark/hard & soft endings, then put a sample word in each box. I found it easier to memorize a word than the tone rules ( which don't make sense)
I’m just starting to learn the alphabet, I can read only 2 letters so far 😢 but I have workbooks on the way so I can learn the alphabet and basics of Thai!😊
Hi Lindie This has nothing to do with the video but I saw you at the Korean Film and Food festival yesterday and I really wanted to come up to you,but decided not to in order to respect your privacy...I just wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to carry on studying french and also to start with Korean...your videos are so helpful and useful and have helped me tremendously...Hou aan met wat jy doen en dankie vir wat jy vir die taal gemeenskap doen💕
I recommend the Tilly Birds if you're looking for more music. And I'm not sure if it's available on Netflix in your country but the drama series Let's Fight Ghost was interesting.

I am really liking learn thai the rapid method for cracking how to read the language and learning a lot of words along the way. the obscene stories hel me to remember the letter and most importantly what it sounds like and if it doubles up as a vowel and when along with the tone rules. so many schools say nognoo yeah great but thats not the sound when its actually ng like iNG for example at the end of the word
I'm learning Thai too. I'm mainly just concentrating on listening and speaking. The tones are the most difficult part of the language. I'm also tracking how many hours I've spent learning Thai. It's a more measurable goal than tracking it by days, weeks, or months. According to FSI, Thai is a category 3 language, so it should take 1100 hours to be functional. Good luck in your studies!
@@CalMaile Yes I can speak Thai better now. Now I can concentrate on output by going to Thai restaurants and practicing speaking Thai to Native Thai employees. I pretend I don't know how to speak English. If they speak to me in English I will speak in another language that they don't know. I let them know that they have no choice but to speak Thai to me. Try to resist using English.
I don't know if you've heard of it, but there is a cool language app called SuperMemo (or Super memo world). It's basically Anki but with flashcard decks that you can buy one by one for life access or buy a monthly sub giving you access to literally all of their content. They released a Thai deck a year ago with about 5000 flashcards. Supermemo is a Polish company (the country I come from
If you are looking for a good thai movie Bad Genius was pretty good imo. It's kinda a heist movie set in school, where cheating on the tests is the heist. May be better to wait a bit longer so you can understand more of it? That's all up to you obviously. Would recommend it though! Even based on the true story of some big cheating scandal years ago
Hi all, it sounds like thai language is so difficult. I really had wanted to learn this language,, now I wonder should I give up on it?? Lindie, you mentioned that even hungarian is easier!! But I tried hungarian and found the grammar way too difficult. Languages like Thai seemed easier because the grammar is not as challenging. Do you mean, the language is hard due to the writing system mostly? If I knew Vietnamese and Mandarin and comfortable with tones, I was hoping this could help me with thai...but really love to hear more on this language and thoughts, ideas.
Bit of a late comment but if you go bu how words are spelt it saves you a HUGE amount of time because firstly it cuts out all the unnecessary letters and secondly you can go by the pattern of pronunciation.
Thank you for this! You inspired me to choose a language to learn while studying at uni. They have a nice collection of languages but I wanted to learn Japanese since I’ve been interested for years. Unfortunately, they don’t have a beginners class. Other options would be Chinese or Korean. Which one should I choose from? I already know Hangul but learning how to write Chinese characters would make Kanji a lot easier. My native language is german. Any thoughts? :)
Lindie, I think you’re being way too hard on yourself. It sounds like I started learning Thai about three weeks before you. The only word I know is Hello. I started with two books, Cracking Thai Fundamentals and Read Thai In 10 Days after a couple of Polyglots / YT’ers highly recommended the books. Both books are too advanced for a complete beginner. So I wasted a couple of weeks looking for a new path. One piece of advice that makes a ton of sense from almost every person who has learned Thai is, learning the alphabet will help you in the long run and gets you away from relying at bad romanization guides / translations of the language. Plus, from the little that I am understanding, learning the alphabet actually helps you understand how to pronounce new words. Anyway, I think you’re doing great! Keep up the good work and I’ll keep following for more tips and tricks. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You can find BananaThai by Googling them, and just Google Rapid Thai and ActiveThai to find those too. Preply and iTalki are linked in the description.
There are 2 sounds in Thai for P. That Pollamai should be the P similar to The English P not Spanish P. พา (to bring sb) and ปา (to throw sth) are examples for both P sounds in Thai. Your tone os pretty close but not clean yet..
for me thai is just noise, been there a few times. but recently i stayed there long it was like it goes in one ear out the other. hard to remember everything. i know a few odd words but can never string a full sentence together.
Please do not use Drops for learning the alphabet, it is absolutely terrible. I learned the alphabet with Thai kids books and it is impossible for me to understand their romanization. There are way better ressources on RUclips.
Good luck with your Thai learning. I also went through Banana Thai. I think it is good for the beginner. However her lessons became a little bit too slow for me because I am not a beginner. As for learning Thai reading and writing, I recommend you to start with the Middle-Class Consonants (ก จ ด ฎ ต ฏ บ ป อ) and add a long Thai vowel like (า). This will give you a middle level tone. Then add a short Thai vowel like (ะ) to these Middle-Class Consonants. This will give you a low level tone. By the way, ด and ฎ have the same English "d" sound. Thai words with ฎ is less common so do skip it in the beginning. Also ต and ฏ have the same sound. Again ฏ is less common. This sound is like the "t" in stop. There should be no air coming out of your mouth when making this sound. Practice saying stop by saying the "s" slightly. I recommend ruclips.net/video/vXWiObQ9xu8/видео.html to help you to learn the Thai tones.
When you said "I use preply" I was like ME TOO! Then you said "I use drops" and again me, ME TOO. Then you said "I watch shows on netflix and they're bizarre", I said I KNOW, right??? 😂 and I also only pick up a handful of words 🫠 BUT I've also been looking for thai music that I may like, but on my research I only found like "romantic" music that I'm not so into 😂 Any music recommendations? And have you seen friendzoned? A thai film

Lindie, which is harder Tagalog or Thai?
For me it’s Thai but everyone has a different experience
what is the reason? what is the reason?
Bonjour Lindie ou en es tu dans ton apprentissage du français ?
No standardized roman transliteration
Hi Lindie. I’m a Vietnamese who used to live in Thai for 4 years. I have some Thai resouces here for you. How can I send you those?
Thank you! Feel free to email it to me at hello@lindiebotes.com
린디씨가 태국어를 배우는 이유가 정말 궁금하네요.
지금은 비밀이에여 ㅎㅎㅎ
Can you give some links to your Thai resources?
You can find BananaThai by Googling them, and just Google Rapid Thai and ActiveThai to find those too. Preply and iTalki are linked in the description.
@@LindieBotes Thanks Lindie. Here's another huge resource of Thai links you might like to look through www.expatden.com/thai/resources/learning-thai/
6:30 QUE ES ESO
lo se 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Have you tried Duolingo?
They don't have Thai
@@LindieBotes oh! Alright 👍
สู้ๆๆค่ะ
So when are you going/moving to Thailand 😎 haha jk, it just feels like you're hinting at it a little :)
There are 2 sounds in Thai for P. That Pollamai should be the P similar to The English P not Spanish P. พา (to bring sb) and ปา (to throw sth) are examples for both P sounds in Thai. Your tone os pretty close but not clean yet..
For 9 hours of learning of course I’d be a bit beginner!!
why did you study Thailand language?
Surprise
Su su = fighting
for me thai is just noise, been there a few times. but recently i stayed there long it was like it goes in one ear out the other. hard to remember everything. i know a few odd words but can never string a full sentence together.
I must say it was the hardest language I’ve tried!
สวัสดีครับ ผมติดตามช่องอยู่
Do you like BL SERIES?
Please do not use Drops for learning the alphabet, it is absolutely terrible. I learned the alphabet with Thai kids books and it is impossible for me to understand their romanization. There are way better ressources on RUclips.
like what can u suggest?
super helpful
😂 and I also only pick up a handful of words 🫠
BUT I've also been looking for thai music that I may like, but on my research I only found like "romantic" music that I'm not so into 😂
Any music recommendations?
And have you seen friendzoned? A thai film
