nightwingman666 it really is and I can't place why. The ominous chorus "ah's" , the music itself or the beautiful lead vocals? Maybe it's the combination
It's a combination. First the song is in B minor which is usually associated with melancholic songs. Second is the Choir acting together with the one-woman wail, which is often used to interpose sadness, regret or reminiscence into the music, while the volume during this part was greatly increased to convey a sense of grandeur. Then there's the instruments, the beginning mimicking the sounds of a music box and violin on the forefront evoke a sense of timelessness, while the use of a traditional Russian melody juxtaposed under the main melody mimicking the sounds of an accordion during the middle, firmly plants it into the real world. Using the time signature of 3/4 with a slow tempo was also a calculated part because the slow waltz was popular during the time period of Anastasia's youth. And finally there's Christy Altomare's crystal clear voice without whom the song itself would fall flat. Her very expert use of vibrato on the lower register of her voice, and head tones on the upper register gives a kind of strength to her voice, but transitioning to that short flasetto at the end adds a sense of longing that really just tugs on your heart. The craftsmanship put into this piece is just really superb, and you might think looking at it through the lens of music theory, might take away the emotions and gravitas of the song, but from my perspective it allowed me to fully understand and appreciate just why this song really hit me.
I think a lot of people have a nostalgic attachment to the original and I love it too, but I was really surprised to prefer this version. Something about this arrangement just feels bolder, more melancholic and wistful. It especially fits into the darker theme of the show.
I prefer the deana carter version myself (that flamenco guitar duet in the middle sends a chill down my spine), but this is definitely better than the Liz Callaway version.
It's what you think of her voice, which is neither right or wrong (no need to apologize for your opinion if you're being polite!), but if you're looking for proper musical terms to describe her singing, I think 'tone' and 'phrasing' would work best... due to good technique, she produces a smooth, clear tone that is not breathy or nasal, and she phrases her vowels in a way that is emotionally expressive. All that can lead to a very "pure", classical sound. Music geek coming through lol! Hope that was helpful.
Anastasia did survive, not in flesh but in spirit as we tell her story and pay homage to her memory through art turning her into one of the greatest icons of the 20th century.
Oh, the violin makes me feel so warm and happy inside. I actually prefer this version rather than the movie version. I hear more feeling and emotion in her voice.
hannah I saw the musical and I did really enjoy it but the movie version of this song has something that this one just doesn't. It's much more of a powerful and sad moment in the movie than here imo.
Lavender Rose Idk I just prefer the original, I prefer all the originals to the musical version but that can't be helped when I've been watching it since I was a kid.
No one: Not a single person: Not in all of Russia: Me at 3 AM: **descending my stairs while I (attempt to) sing the soprano note in the background as I waltz into and around my kitchen** My family: [fear and confusion] Me, still dancing but now on the table: “fAar awAY LoNg AgO”
I am so lucky to have seen this musical live on Broadway with the original cast. This song made me cry. They had projections of dancing people on the walls, the singing was phenomenal... I don't cry very often at all, but I was so close to weeping with this..
EssiCrossed I also got to see it with the original cast. Christie Altomare (Anya) hugged me twice at the stage door. It was an amazing performance and the cast is so down to earth. It was an amazing experience.
For me, it was this song as well as Stay, I Pray you that absolutely killed me. I bawled the entire time (especially at the latter, goodness it was beautiful) I was so lucky to see it while I was visiting the US and wow I wish I could see it 100x again
I watched the movie when I was little, I was fascinated with the real Anastasia Romanov and was disappointed to find out what happened to her and her family. Ever since I've been salty about the movie itself, given that the real Anastasia was brutally murdered when she was only 17. I wasn't ecstatic to find out they were making a stage adaptation, but I kind of understood why, luckily they made some big changes, particularly with Rasputin and that Anastasia was 17 not 9. I saw Anastasia on Broadway for my 18th birthday, and met Christy Altomare at the stage door, I was shocked when she sang me happy birthday. Two months later I got to meet Liz Callaway, the woman who did the original singing for Anastasia. Overall, I enjoyed the show, and the movie, but this whole thing would not exist if innocent children hadn't been butchered by the Bolsheviks.
Agreed! I enjoyed the movie as a child, but as someone with keen interest in history and furthermore, as someone from Eastern Europe, I have some choice words to whoever decided it was a good idea to gloss over a brutal murder of the Russian royal family and turned into a silly movie for kids.
Bolsheviks DIDN'T kill them. If the center had managed to take the Royal family, they would have killed Nicholas, but they would not have touched the children. The family was a victim of the civil war and the radical views of the local Council. And then people did not care about the fate of the Romanovs. Movie is good, I have loved it since childhood ^_^
The original story is somewhat based in reality though. There was individuals passing themselves off as the Grand Duchess. There really was a mystery as to what really happened to her as there were Rumors in St. Petersburg (yes I did that on purpose 😁) People were doing the exact same thing Dimitri was doing in order to get reward money in real life. Yes the real Anastasia is sadly dead, which was confirmed a few years after the movie came out. I see it as this. You know how comics have What If stories. If characters realities took different routes. WHAT IF Anastasia did survive and one of these so called imposters really was her. I also like some of the changes like removing Rasputin and making the “villain” the Soviets. It would make more sense in terms of this What If story. The Soviet government would really be interested that a formal royal that was removed was alive. That’s just my theory anyway.
I think she sounds almost exactly like the movie version but with more fluidity Either way I think if people knew how hard it was to actually sing this song they might feel differently but idk
Christina Lauren I’d give anything to see her perform. Unfortunately I live half way across the world. Anastasia has been one of my favourite princesses since I was a child. And Christy does so much justice to the original character. The amount of love and passion she brings to the stage is incredible. What a truly incredible woman
WHAT?! Excuse me?! There is a Musical about one of my favorite movies of all time?! How have I not heard of this?! (and I just happen to find this musical with this video which features my favorite song throughout the entire movie)
I saw the musical before it made its way to Broadway, and can confirm that it strays from the movie. They do away with the Romanov curse and instead focus on the politics of if Anastasia is still alive and the government believing Anya is Anastasia, hunting her down. She still longs for Paris and believes that something is there for her (her grandmother). They change some characters, add some backstory to all of them, and make the musical a bit more realistic rather than a fantasy like the movie was. It was still absolutely amazing though.
I think is more dark and melancholic than Castle on a Cloud. Castle was a little girl dreaming of a better life , once upon a December is a girl with no memory of her past putting together the blurred figures and ghosts that she doesn't recall . Things she knows but doesn't understands. In a way is much sadder than Castle . She misses the figures but she doesn't remembers who they were .

When I first heard this song a few weeks ago, god I can’t explain it, I just got this overwhelming sense of nostalgia and home and cosiness and magic. I’d never watched Anastasia or heard it before or anything so I really don’t know where this feeling came from!
I am telling honest truth. Ever since I saw the movie, I fell in LOVE with it and was dreaming about the day when they made a broadway musical for it. I think she is the most beautiful singer ever! I haven't seen it yet, but am planning on seeing it soon.
I feel like both this version and the singer from the film version brought something different but beautiful to the song--made it their own, but i still felt the vulnerability and yearning there. so hope to see this play before the year ends. would be my first broadway experience.
I saw the show on May 3rd, 2017 and it was the best musical I've ever seen. The music, costumes, actors and actresses, dancing, and the story were all just amazing! I'm so honored I got to see this amazing show.
I'm so happy this was made into a Broadway musical. Anastasia was such a magical animated movie, and it wasn't even Disney. I'm glad to see it get recognition ^^
As a huge fan of the animated movie I have to say I'm very pleased with this version. Not entirely thrilled about changes that have been made for the stage production but this song is excellently handled.
I've heard this song so many times, but it never fails to give me goosebumps and feel magical. It sounds so comforting and mysterious at the same time.
Foi uma história verdadeiramente triste o que a esta família teve que passar e lamentavelmente Anastasia não escapou 💔 mas gerou uma bela saga de histórias, animações e filmes .
Saw this musical yesterday and it was the most beautiful musical I’ve ever seen. And now it feels like it was all a dream. But it was real. The cast did an amazing job. I felt a torrent of emotions, joy, laughter, anguish, and this scene I actually cried, it was just so beautifully done. The original broadway Dmitry was there too. I highly recommend this musical to all. So if you can go see it!
It's chillingly beautiful and Haunting like you can tell there both hopefulness and helplessness in the song at the same time whoever made this song I applaud you
I saw this play last month, and this scene almost brought me to tears. This is one of my favorite songs of all time from one of my favorite movies of all time and seeing it happen in front of me and all around me was incredible.
I got to see Anastasia on May 24th. It was overall one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first time going to broadway. So excited to see more. This song gave me chills, and I recommend you to listen to more
saw this last week on broadway and I can still remember it. CHILLS and TEARS sooo sooo AMAZING it was! Christy is amazing! her voice and performance! the whole cast omg. too good! derek
Omg this is amazing! I have chills. I grew up with the movie so it will always have a place in my heart, but this, this has taken the song to the next level. I think what makes it so beautiful is how intense the backing vocals are.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
Somehow this reminds me slightly of Close Every Door To Me from Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, maybe both songs are in the same key? so hauntingly beautiful
I also think it's because both songs are about loss and hope in their own sad but beautiful way (Joseph is also my favourite musical, I'm always so happy when someone mentions it)
0:10 Dancing bears Painted wings Things I almost remember And a song Someone sings Once upon a December Someone holds me safe and warm Horses prance through a silver storm Figures dancing gracefully Across my memories
I never actually remember watching this movie all the way through, I was so young when I saw it, but I watched the broadway cast do this song during the Macy's day parade and I sing it all the time now. I absolutely adore musicals
I can legit imagine this amazingly Like even though there are details they aren't that specific but damn it is made crystal clear with the music and stuff
I've loved the movie ever since I was a little kid and my family and I watched it when we went to nyc. It was amazing! The cast was perfect, and the costumes and set were really beautiful. It was worth it. It wasn't exactly the same as the movie, there were some changes, but it didn't make the show any less beautiful. Go see it if you can! 👍
I saw it a few weeks ago on Broadway. This is by far my favourite song. I haven't seen the movie ever. I plan on seeing it though. I like the musical, though I was tired AF when I watched it and almost fell asleep.

I feel like both this version and the singer from the film version brought something different but beautiful to the song--made it their own, but i still felt the vulnerability and yearning there. so hope to see this play before the year ends. would be my first broadway experience.
I haven't seen it, but she sounds ALMOST like Liz Calloway herself. I think you deserve this Anya. 🍪
I saw this show live a few months ago, and it was INCREDIBLE! Truly one of the most beautiful performances I've ever seen
I couldn’t said it better myself
I saw the show on May 3rd, 2017 and it was the best musical I've ever seen. The music, costumes, actors and actresses, dancing, and the story were all just amazing! I'm so honored I got to see this amazing show.
I am Japanese .I do'nt listen English. But I like this song .This song is beautiful.
Just saw it on Broadway last week and loved the entire production but this song really got my heart!
Lucky! It sounds like it would be a gorgeous performance.
Anastasia has a charm that keeps it coming back to life. Like a distant memory thought was dismissed
Goosebumps each time so so beautiful... literally takes you to that era.
I've heard this song so many times, but it never fails to give me goosebumps and feel magical. It sounds so comforting and mysterious at the same time.
This song never fails to make me teary eyed.
My choir group did this song and we loved it 💙💙💙💙
Amber Elzey omg jealous
Hauntingly beautiful... Saw her sing this on broadway today, magnificent
“ someone holds me safe and warm....... “ 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼 this version is beautiful ❣️ thank you for sharing
Seeing this live was amazing
I appreciate that one soprano in the background
This is beautiful. I need to watch this musical. Anastasia is one of my favourite movies from childhood. And this is one of my favourite songs☺️❤️💯
What I love about this is how you can modulate it up as many times as you want
Honestly I love this so much more than the original version.
🎵💕
Just got my cast recording CD today and I love it!! :D
~:~
I've been trying to order my cast recording from Walmart, but literally both ones they've sent me have been broken and I'm just like ARRRGGGGHHHHH
This is quite a harrowing and beautiful song, imagining only just remembering your past through vivid memories
This song is so beautifully haunting. It will always be painted in my childhood memories
Το λατρεύω αυτό το τραγούδι. Περιμένω τον φετινό Δεκέμβρη με πολλή αγωνία και χαρά κι εύχομαι να πάνε όλα καλά :)
I got to see Anastasia on May 24th. It was overall one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first time going to broadway. So excited to see more. This song gave me chills, and I recommend you to listen to more
The show is absolutely stunning! Would see it over and over again if I could.
Man this is really a piece of art.
The real story off what happens is soo sad and this song is so pretty
I have wonderful memories with this particular version of the song when it was on Broadway. That day was magical..
saw this last week on broadway and I can still remember it. CHILLS and TEARS sooo sooo AMAZING it was! Christy is amazing! her voice and performance! the whole cast omg. too good! derek
OMG I LOOOOVE THIS SONG IM LITERALLY SHIVERING RIGHT NOW. This was my favorite childhood Disney princess movie and song!!! 😍
Saw it last night. My first musical ever. Now officially a fan.
I cried this is so beautiful and the chills I got from this ugh it's absolutely amazing
I loved this song as a kid and would sing it constantly
l may or may not still do that
Omg this is amazing!
Joshua 1:9
This song always gives me chills, it's so gorgeous
My favorite 2nd favorite movie of all time.. I love how it's done and she sings beautifully in this movie..
I heard this song accidently from the radio. This lovely song touches my heart deeply. So i found this song here. I love it very much.
Just saw this last night - SOOO GOOD! I love the plot more than the cartoon, honestly
So do I
I recently watched the original movie and let me just say I saw the whole thing in my mind as she sang. She was born for this role.
This song was made for us in December 🤭❤️
But the best Arabic version is very beautiful and the sound is great
Somehow this reminds me slightly of Close Every Door To Me from Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, maybe both songs are in the same key? so hauntingly beautiful
I also think it's because both songs are about loss and hope in their own sad but beautiful way (Joseph is also my favourite musical, I'm always so happy when someone mentions it)
0:10
Dancing bears
Painted wings
Things I almost remember
And a song
Someone sings
Once upon a December
Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memories
so glad i got to see this in NYC i cried during the standing ovation
It's so beautiful and the song is amazing.
THE NOSTALGIA. Anastasia was my childhood!
I'm going to New York City this may long and they haven't announced what shows we'll see yet but I'm so excited. I love this one.
I never actually remember watching this movie all the way through, I was so young when I saw it, but I watched the broadway cast do this song during the Macy's day parade and I sing it all the time now. I absolutely adore musicals
The stage version blows the movie out of the water. When it’s safe, you should check out a regional production
I just love love love the violin part it is just so beautiful so pure makes me cry because it makes me feel good and comfortable
I'm asking for tickets this year! I've always had an attachment to this.
I can legit imagine this amazingly
Like even though there are details they aren't that specific but damn it is made crystal clear with the music and stuff
Amazing song! I literally tear up every time I hear it. I don't know where Disney finds all these beautiful singers
this encompass paris so much. with elegance and so much history.
I played this song everyday and to be honest her voice is beautiful and pure
Just magical, many thanks for uploading it here!
Such a beautiful and an attractive song... ♥
I saw it a few weeks ago on Broadway. This is by far my favourite song. I haven't seen the movie ever. I plan on seeing it though. I like the musical, though I was tired AF when I watched it and almost fell asleep.
