    This is why it's so laughable when people talk about a 'new Tesla'. There are no Legacy car makers who are remotely capable of doing something like this. Companies like Lucid or Fisker ought to be able to, but they don't have the mindset to make this happen. Tesla NEVER sits back and accepts the status quo, they ALWAYS innovate and push even harder to lower costs.

      In the UK the Tesla model 3 was tested against the BYD Seal, and lost on most of the fronts. The Seal was better.
      Where is that $25k Tesla . . . that Elon is babbling about since 2018? maybe late 2025 or early 2026 in production ?
      Stellantis is already producing the first sub €25.000 EV. Bringing the Citroën ë-C3 with LFP battery, 320km range and 200kW charging, build in the EU.
      The €25k Renault R5 E-Tech will follow in September with a 400km range and also LFP battery and 100kW charging.
      And that Tesla talk, about sub $25k affordable EV's . . . . . still waiting, many talk no show.

    I love Elon Musk's last statement. He is going to do what is right and not bow to big corporate interests. He is the brightest hero in the world today. Leading new discoveries in electric power, batteries, vehicles, making world wide communications inexpensive and geographically unlimited, providing clean water to big cities free of charge, lowering space exploration by 10x, etc.

      I worked on 4 generations of game console SOCs at AMD. Both for Microsoft and Sony. Each generation pushed semiconductor and chip packaging technologies to their limits to get every micron of area, power reduction, and performance out each technology node from mainly TSMC. Tesla ethic is the same as the chip design ethic of continuous product design cycle improvement that results in lower cost, better performance, better value for the customer. That spells increased customer satisfaction and more revenue in the end. And…more profit. This ethos is by nature born out of silicon valley. Legacy automakers have a long and painful lesson to learn here IMHO

Autowipers don't work, cruse control has a mind of its own and Autopilot is almost unusable. So all the fronts you mention, the only one Tesla delivers on is a drop in value for 50k car to at 30k car with no performance and customer satisfaction increase. Maybe I next time a buy a vehicle, I consider those legacy car makers again.

    A smaller battery pack maybe, but they still need to keep 300 miles / 500km as a base for the Model Y, so that BEVs are not viewed as inferior to ICE (eg Nissan Qashqai petrol has about 550km range.)

    • @davidbeppler3032

      An EV only needs a 200+ mile battery. I currently drive 300 miles for just $9. And I will get to drive 300 miles for $9 for about 750k miles. That is 2x longer than any ICE on the market. If ICE wants to survive, they need to start offering free gas for the first 100k miles of ownership.

      You can fill a 20k$ gas car from 0% to 100% in ~5min counting from the second you stop the engine until you are back on your way to wherever you are going, maybe 7min if you pay indoors instead of contact-less at the pump. Budget EVs aren't going to be capable of 500+kW fast-charging any time soon to achieve the same degree of convenience for road trips and people who cannot charge at home. And then there is still the substantial cold weather penalty from heating the battery and cabin which you don't have with ICE beyond de-frosting windows before driving off.

      With gas car, I stopped 2 times fill gas 5 minutes then parked to go to washroom (less than 5 minutes) and brought coffee from Tim Horton (line up for 5-10 minutes), jump back to drive.
      With EV, park and start charge (15-20 minutes session) in the mean time went to washroom and brought coffee; continue to drive.
      It may be 3-5 minutes per stop different.
      Fact, I can't hold more than 2 1/2 hours without bio-stop. And lucky that no line-up for charger.

    Didn’t Elon say on the earnings call that Tesla had taken just about as much cost as they could out of the 3/Y models? Good that battery costs continue to fall but those will only feed in slowly to the overall car price. It will really kick in from 2025, not this year.
    Should massively benefit the Model 2 in the next few years but I think we’re getting way too excited about the impact this year.

    Tesla said that the cost of manufacture will NOT KEEP DROPPING as much. It will drop, but they are getting close to the bottom, so the cost will not decline AS RAPIDLY. At least that is what I heard from the call.

    • @amosbatto3051
      @amosbatto3051 4 месяца назад +2

      Yes, that is what I heard as well, but Sam may be right that the price will keep dropping due to cuts in battery prices. I think it depends on what prices were negotiated in the contract that Tesla signed with CATL for its batteries.

    • @ISuperTed
      @ISuperTed 4 месяца назад +1

      Exactly what he said. Sam is, as usual, getting way ahead of himself here. It may make Tesla a little more margin this year but likely to be the end of the year before it’s even seen. It’s much more important for the Gen 3 models from 2025 onwards.
      There’s no magic bullet coming in 2024 to magically restore Tesla margins to 20% but there will be a steady cost reduction and then I’d expect a jump for Gen 3 cars.

      Yes for the current architecture. All the ongoing modifications are chasing diminishing returns. This is why the Model 2 is using the "unboxed" method and Cybertruck is a testbed for things like 48V, gigabit canbus, steer-by-wire, etc. Once Model 2 is out, everything that works will go into a new Model 3/Y... eventually.

    Another byproduct of the conversion to LFP batteries is often overlooked. The perception of shorter range due to lower energy density is already largely offset by the recommended practice by Tesla of charging LFPs to 100% on a daily basis. If older NCA battery owners are actively discouraged from charging beyond 80%, even on the road at a Supercharger, then their “virtual” range is near enough to the same. But if CATL can lift the LFP energy density to match NCA batteries, then the “virtual” range of the new vehicle will be significantly better.

Currently, the base Model Y is priced around $36,200, and the revamped Model 3 saw a 12% increase in its base price to $35,800 - both still below Tesla’s average cost of ~$37,487 per vehicle in Q3.” and we know Q4 was worse. One of the most powerful arguments that I currently hear are repair costs, and especially battery replacement costs. I am still waiting for an electric car that can do what it does for $35k, because the cost of ownership is lower. A mere $5-7k drop on a Model Y or an AWD option on a Model 2 might get me there. New gen will not have smaller size barttery it has different battery. Why Optimus Bot lost 11kg - that is battery and is thinner - Tesla uses some new kind of battery that has 3x the energy. To go robotaxy market range gives better servicing period options also having bigger fluid tank or better seat materials also stainless steel body. So the robotaxy and next gen are not omen model I think but whole lineup

      I expect that Tesla will keep using the cheaper LFP cells (from CATL and BYD) in the Model 3/Y Standard Range, whereas the Long Range and Performance will keep using the more expensive NMC (from Panasonic and LG) for its higher energy density. We probably will see a 300 mile Model 2 (or whatever Tesla calls its $25k compact) that competes with the Camry, but that probably won't come until late 2025 or early 2026.

    Imagine a TESLA w/ 450 miles on CATL LFP batteries. After your 10% loss over 100K (whatever) still has 400 mile range and twice as many charges... Now that speaks to me... I'd take a 100KW battery if I could get more mileage and bidirectional charging capacity... yeah baby! or am I dreaming!? '; o

    Why does everyone need a 400km range from a small car? If someone would please make a small car with a 200km range it would be awesome. It would be lighter, cheaper and would do everything most people require from a small car ie running around in their local area. If you are charging it at home who cares? Most people don't drive more than 40km per day. Remember, a lot of the range of EVs gets eaten by the weight of the battery. Halve the battery size and you will halve the battery weight and get even more range.

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle 4 месяца назад

    Battery pack prices are going down, energy density increasing, and with new innovations, so will recharge performance, safety and longevity. But, at the same time, you have to remember that the EV business is not about just building cars. It is about designing new ones, creating new ways to manufacture them, and working out all the problems that come with this process. This is why Tesla succeeds. More specifically, Tesla is not afraid embark on a project to create a new product, knowing it will lose money on it, for the first generation model. The Cybertruck is a case in point: ridiculously stiff metal, controversial design, and not really sure about whether it is attractive to the tradesman or the soccer mom. They just build it and see what happens. This is where they lose money, but at the same time learn a lot about manufacturing. Other car companies take a more conservative approach and take much longer to fix things. The next innovation TSLA needs is a way to fix the cars. They will likely pick up at home, offer a loaner and ship the car to a central repair facility, or repair at the customer's home.

    All EV's need to drive 500 miles per charge at a minimum, just like Lucid has already achieved, proving it is not just a pipe dream. That will take away range anxiety for longer road trips and make more people switch to a EV.

    • @douglaswatt1582

      Yep just like everybody needs 100% returns in a year in order to invest in the stock market.
      This is a BS comment. Only people with severe range anxiety need 500 me of range. Those folks may never ever buy electric vehicles until there are no more gas vehicles available for sale. We do just fine with 300 and we know that in fact we don't really get that in a road trip because of range dilution relative to speed. Do you believe that everybody is stupid that they have to have 500 miles of range? Especially when they only drive on average 42 miles a day? Please please consider that this is a crazy idea

    "Tesla lowered the price it costs to make EVs every month last year" Yes and it shows. The interior looks disgustingly cheap (what is that ugly grey carpet on the doorpanels and dash?). The front bumper looks far less good (zero details, really missing those foglights). Having buttons for the indicators does simply not work at on European roads (where we have these things called roundabouts) and having to switch gears on the screen is just crappy. The taillights however are nicer and so is the range and suspension but all in all, I'd rather get the 2023 model. I've been testdriving a couple of EV's and honestly I'd much rather go with the EX30 or Seal instead. The EX30 does minimalism better and the Seal is just far more car for the money.

    Does anyone think the best Tesla you can get will be worth the same as an aged Jag E type/Porsche/Ferrari? Will be worthless like an iPhone 4. Cheaply made generic style EV which is disposable when battery inevitably gives up. Also a total bore fest to own. Almost any ICE car is more desirable to own and use apart from not writing itself off without neglect.

  • @frankcoffey
    @frankcoffey 4 месяца назад

    EVs will continue to get cheaper to make and ICE cars will continue to get more expensive to make. So as a function of time automakers will decide to stop making ICE cars even if there is still demand. The cost vs wholesale price math simply won't work. What few gas powered vehicles are still available will get very expensive.

    The great news for Tesla owners as they see the resale value for their car diminish by over 50% per annum. Rule of thumb when it comes to buying a Tesla. Never buy the newest model on release. Wait 2 year after release for a rumors of a refresh, then look to buy the pre-refresh model around December for at least 30% less than the price of the car when it was released. Also potential Christmas rebates can get you the car for almost 45% less than the launch price.

    Tesla lowers costs to make EVs? Then why the utterly idiotic and useless full glass roof still there? That stupid thing costs a fortune to manufacture AND to insure ( they are like 3000 USD at the very least to replace and they DO break ). And all it does is to allow A LOT more heat into the cabin forcing you to run AC more, decreasing efficiency and range. Any glass roofs should be paid for options only! For gullible people susceptible to dodgy marketing ads.
