    So what I would like to know is....
    Why in the HELL do folks SPEED and TAILGATE in dense fog/smoke????
    I was an OTR truck driver, a PROFESSIONAL truck driver I might add, and I've seen situations like this numerous times...
    As we can all see, this is the result of SPEEDING and TAILGATING in total blindness!!!!

      @daemn42 7 месяцев назад +3

      FWIW, having driven into bad vis conditions (snow/fog/hail/etc) plenty of times, it's the truckers who often are the ones not slowing down. They may have a higher/better view, but they don't have the stopping distance of a car (especially a stopped car).

    • @SolarReturn1966
      @SolarReturn1966 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@daemn42 Very true! Unfortunately, today's truck "drivers" drive a 80,000lb truck like a car. Nothing against car drivers because I drove cars as well. Back in the day it took me six months to earn my CDL and Professional Truck Driver Diploma. Nowadays, you can go from driving a car to driving tractor trailers in about 2-4 weeks.......
      It really comes down to using common sense. There's a lot of cars AND big trucks cutting other drivers off in road rage. I see almost everyday. This happens in excellent weather I might add. Lord forbid if it starts raining, sleeting and snowing....or fog!
      In those conditions, those bad driving habits of speeding and TAILGATING tends to catch up to those road ragers and it bites them in the a** literally. Unfortunately, folks get seriously injured or worse, die unnecessarily because of these folks that just have to get around the "slow" driver that is driving safe.
      All I can say is...there is ALWAYS going to be someone behind you or in front of you and it doesn't matter whether it's in a store or the highway.
      We will ALL get where we are going eventually if everyone just kept this in mind.......

    This is terrible. I grew up in a mountainous region, and certain times of year the fog is so thick you can't see more than a car length past you--doesn't stop people going full speed through the turns, just like they always have. People don't know how to behave in heavy fog.

      The worst fog I was ever in was on Lake Michigan. It popped up suddenly and soon I could barely see the bow of my 27 foot sailboat. I eased my sails to slow down, and started sounding my fog horn when some jackass in a big power boat blazed past me at high speed so close that the spray from his wake got me wet. I think he missed by about five feet.

    This wasn't caused by "superfog "
    This was caused by MANY MANY drivers FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY!
    I promise you that not everyone involved actually hit someone.
    Many people actually were driving safely and pulled over as soon as they hit fog and then they were rear ended by SOMEONE FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE!

      @@ChanceandChoice WRONG. You have it backwards. Proximity is EVERYTHING!
      It's ALL about the 2 second rule. (Look it up)
      People in this case could of rear ended the car in front of them while going FOUR mph if they were following too close.
      Conversely a car driving 100 MPH would have no problem with this situation as long as they kept at least TWO SECONDS between them and the car in front of them/the fog.
      As SOON as you CAN'T see two seconds ahead you IMMEDIATELY slow down until you CAN . and if you can't even see the road obviously you pull over and GET AWAY FROM THE CAR!

    Currently, driver licenses in the United States are given away with minimal training and experience. In Washington State, driving on the freeway is not even a part of the final test. Fog does not fall under the "act of god" clause, no insurance company will defend this. Driving through fog is the drivers responsibility, wich means you are liable for anything that happens. No one deserves to die over an accident, but if people are willing to learn, and take accountability... there's a possibility for safer roads in the future.

    Another problem is americans don't know anything about when to use fog lights (if they exist). Modern cars equipped with fog lights will activate a bright rear fog light (see any Audi, any time) which makes you more visible from behind. The correct way to use them is to position yourself such that you can see the taillights/fog light of the car in the next lane over, and they do the same with the car in front of you (that you can't see) and so forth. When they brake, you brake, and it gives a buffer to the car directly in front of you. It's required training in Europe. Nobody in the US knows anything about it.

    I predict: California's central valley Highway 99 will do this in a month or so.
    There is a solution, short of not driving in this, that'll mitigate the highway fog problem: Strobe Lights (like the airport runway lights) in critical areas, every 50 yards or so, in the center divide, that'll auto-activate when vision decreases.
    The drivers are legally required to change their max speed - limited to 20 mph. When the strobes are off, they'll go back to the regular posted speed.

    Literally missed a whole opportunity to tell people what to do in a fog driving situation. If you are ever in this situation, reduce your speed, turn on fog lights, and use the right side of the road as a guide. In extremely dense fog where visibility is near zero, the best course of action is to first turn on your hazard lights, then simply pull over to the side of the road as far as possible. Once you come to a stop, turn off all lights except your hazard flashing lights, set the emergency brake, and take your foot off of the brake pedal to be sure the tail lights are not illuminated so that other drivers don't mistakenly run into you.
    This clearly happened because some people never slowed down enough and people are tailgating by nature, keep a cars length distance even in clear visibility. It is not worth the rush.

    How come those people were searched for and rescued but it took 3 days to allow anyone into lahaina to search and rescue. They just let ppl die in pain and you can see so many dead bodies on the drone footage. It's so terrible how some ppls lives are more important than others. This whole thing makes me sad for these ppl but I'm even more upset and angry that no one let us in to lahaina to search and help. Fema purposely killing off survivors and throwing their bodies into a mass grave. Fema got caught too which is why they left in droves.

      I’m from California. It’s weird, very strange and disgusting how when news broke about the Lahaina fires and RUclips videos started right after about speculation on how and why the fires started, the news here tried to overshadow it by saying we were going to have this “huge tropical storm”, hurricane Hillary, and to not go outside. For three days everyone’s phone here got numerous alerts saying to not go outside, severe flash flooding is occuring and it could kill you. Let me tell you, I was outside when I got that alert and it was barley raining. It was a regular storm just like any other but they acted strange about it which makes me feel like it was slap in the Lahaina people face. I don’t know why, it just is. We care, we stand with the people in Lahaina. If they aren’t letting you in, they find another way or fight back. Because what they did are continuing to do to the people in Lahaina is inhumane and sick. We are angry for you guys, the news just won’t broadcast it

    This type of accident has been known to happen in California in the Central Valley because of “Tule Fog”. The clouds hang very low and can suddenly descend out of no where. You are driving 70mph with clear visibility ahead and wham…you cant see past your hood.

    This is tragic. But I swear, people think, oh dang I can't see a damn thing! Well I better keep going 70mph though. Same thing happens in winter around Denver. Ice snow and blizzard conditions, yet people still hurdle down the road at break neck speeds. People need better discipline in adverse conditions.

    Been in fog so thick you had to open the door to see the line on the road. Thought I could do 5mph but worried about other drivers so I pulled over. Meanwhile, I drive to work and there are a dozen signs road construction work zone 50mph. Everyone ignores them and goes 70. I did 60, and this following car zips around me then brake checks me. The zone is only 1 mile, I was going 10 over, if you have no patience you shouldn't be given a driver's license.

    She was smarter than the truck driver behind her who kept plowing ahead. Why would you step on the gas when you can't see? They couldn't see taillights ahead of them? I I think drivers do that to bully people, they just keep on their tails, and they want them to move or go faster. Eleven miles of bad drivers is hard to believe. It is unsafe to drive because of the other bad drivers more so than any weather conditions. People really should be cited for tailgating instead of speeding. Usually, speeders are good drivers trying to get ahead, but the tailgaters are creating hazards all the time.
