    Good job learning something and sharing it in a great manner. When your wife said it’s cold, then not cold, then cold again it was the biggest clue, and your mechanic friend did you a solid. One trick for the relay test: take another relay that is of the same rating (they are marked) and swap it out. You’re kinda testing from both sides when doing this. For example, if the relay you borrowed was for the horn, and you put the suspect bad relay into the horn slot and the horn works, good chance the relay is ok. And of course, you are also looking at if the system you thought was bad now works with the borrowed relay. Not just a money saver ($5 is no biggie), but it can be a time saver. ScannerDanner, ChrisFix and Eric the Car guy have a lot of good videos on proper troubleshooting/ DIY repairs, check them out.

    I had similar experience. We did end up changing the compressor for around $700 , but when I took out the old one the compressor was fine, it was the clutch. Personally, I was OK paying for it as I am not comfortable working with AC (charging etc). Glad you were able to fix it

    Thanks for sharing this. I have the same problem with my 2009 Odyssey. It works for a little while and then stops. I am certain it is the clutch that is worn out. Tonight I sprayed some brake cleaner into it and it seems to be working. I don't know how long it will work. Anyway if I need to change the clutch, your video was a big help.

      Did this fix yours? My 2009 Odyssey just randomly stopped. Bought a recharge kit and the gauge says it is high(on low side), but I think that's because the a/c isn't working or turning on, so it's showing the static pressure.
      I may look at this clutch kit just a precaution.

    Same thing here - Shop just quoted $1500 to replace compressor and condensor. I said "Not Now". Checking it out now, system has plenty of charge, everything working except the clutch, and I noticed rubber granules around there before it quit. And, it got hot oil on it before that from a VVT valve leak, which likely ruined the clutch. I expect to save about $1400 by changing the clutch out. Thanks for the video!

    $900 is reasonable, average is more $1400. Shops want to make lots of money quickly so they can't be trusted to give honest diagnosis. Their excuse is always doing it right so it doesn't fail again, but truth is anything can happen no matter how well they get fixed, so it's better to learn to do things yourself as much as possible.

    Great video. But ....
    "It may not just be a bad clutch. You might have to replace a bad compressor." This is why your mechanic didn't want to just replace the clutch.
    If they only replace your clutch and it doesn't solve the problem, they'd now have to charge you $900 for a new compressor plus around $300 (parts & labor) for the clutch replacement that didn't work.
    To which you'd likely not be willing to do.
    Mechanics have to deal with situations like this all the time. That's the reason they would only tackle the $900 job.

    Nice, investigating failing AC on an Element. Checking voltage to this clutch is the next trouble step after replacing a failed condenser fan. The reason it costs so much for the compressor replacement is because it's more than just the entire compressor. Once the system is opened to the air, you're supposed to replace other stuff too like the dryer, expansion valve and condenser. the system gas has to be removed to a vacuum before it is refilled. This is replacing almost the entire AC system. If they don't do these things, you could be right back at their shop in a few months (loss revenue). they probably figured it wasn't worth putting in the effort to do only the clutch, the compressor itself could have proven faulty afterwards. But yeah, it's worth a shot for shade tree mechanics like us, especially since it doesn't require opening the system and replacing everything.
    One other thing: "I have a blog on living Debt-Free." I'm with you, not having debt is like giving yourself a huge pay increase without the taxes. I only have 1 debt, and that is what's left on my mortgage bro.

    • @leejonlogsdon
      @leejonlogsdon  4 года назад +2

      I didn't use a clutch tool. I just wedged a flathead so the clutch wouldn't turn. I'll be honest, it was tricky doing it with the compressor still mounted. Getting the snap rings off and on was the most challenging part.

You have to replace your drier and other parts, rent a vacuum puller and gouges, put it under negative pressure, and then refill exactly the amount of refrigerant needed. Also how much oil was in the old compressor. You'll have to put the Exact amount back in your new compressor. Did ALL of that on a Jeep I had. Cost me alot of money and even more time. Thanks for the comment! I have since sold the van but it had been working for over a year. I'll keep that in mind if I have to do it on another car.

    Hi thanks for the video .. I have a question .. do I have to remove the whole compressor or I can remove the clutch while the compressor still intact ?

      I did it with the compressor still on. I didn't want to unhook the hoses because I didn't have a way to capture the refrigerant. I will admit it's a little difficult to get to the clutch while it's still mounted. You may be able to unbolt the compressor and leave the hoses attached. It might give a little wiggle room on the compressor so you can get to the clutch easier. I'm not sure though.

    He made one mistake in the entire process. He said he charged the system after he changed the clutch and the system worked. If he had charged the system before he changed the clutch he would have saved $99. He didn’t do his homework before starting the job and he would have known about the pressure switch the stops the system from working if the pressure is too low. Hope he knows now that he wasted the money. When he started he said he didn’t know anything about it, and that was his first mistake.

      No he just ended up replacing the AC clutch. And the shop was going to charge them $900 to change the AC compressor. So they were going to do a bigger job. That actually wasn’t necessary.

    One question, did you replace the kit with out removing the compressor.

    • @leejonlogsdon
      @leejonlogsdon  5 лет назад +1

      I did replace it without removing the compressor. It was really tight to get to. You might want to remove it.

      I would not recommend removing the compressor if you don't have to, if you remove it you have to recharge the system with refrigerant.

    AC work is very expensive. If you have basic dyi skills, learn to fix it yourself and save a ton of money. I spend under $200 replacing my bad compressor.
