    This is a step by step video outlining the setup process for electric fencing for sheep. This video is geared toward the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER and we hope it will provide you with the detailed information you need to setup an electric fence system for your sheep. We used 3 strands of poly tape to train our sheep to the electric fence system. After they understood what the electric polytape was, we were able to reduce down to just one strand. This system is much more cost-effective than the electric netting for sheep, and very flexible! Watch to the end for an easy hack for testing the charge on your electric fencing. Many thanks to all the farmers and bloggers who have shared their wisdom here on the internet!

    We did rotational grazing on the dairy farm i grew up on. We switched to a geared reel for the larger paddock areas. Each crank of the handle turned the reel 3 turns and made setting up the next area go much faster

    O’Brien posts are the best. I’ll have to try some polyTape. I’ve generally used PolyBraid or 14 ga. High tensile, Solid aluminum wire. The PolyBraid is easier to wind up. I now use the aluminum wire as a central pasture conduit to tether the PolyBraid for paddocks. (Credit to Perma-Pastures Farm for the tether concept)

    Get a good strong stafix charger. Then you are not worried about weed pressure as much during the growing season. Other than that it looks great. Timeless fence has good strong plastic posts I use a lot and Obien step ins. I like polybraid best with the multiple metals for strength and conductivity.

    • @theShepherdess
      @theShepherdess  2 года назад +3

      I use a plastic reel to hold the tape. I pull it right and use a bungee cord to attach the reel to my existing perimeter fence. Space between posts is about 10ft.

    I've got 25 acres in Throckmorton Co. and it's got a lot of brush and weeds. I've cleared about half of that, but there's plenty of grazing. Your country looks so clean and weed free. I was contemplating cover crops vs dorper sheep, and I'm leaning towards the dorper sheep. This spring the place was covered in wild oats, and now tons of rag weed. Do they prefer weeds over grass?

    • @theShepherdess
      @theShepherdess  3 года назад +1

      dorpers will eat everything! Grass, shrubs, and weeds. They will take a lot more work than a cover crop, but they should do well at clearing your land. 😄

      As far as where to start the fence and end it: I always carry bungee cords with me so that I can hook the electric fence reel to trees, posts, anything to create an end point. 😅 Just be sure the poly tape isn’t touching the tree or it will ground out the power.

    One thing that worries me with this type of fencing is predators. Our own dogs (German shepherds) are not trustworthy (yet) around the sheep and I know there are lots of coyotes, wolves, bears and big cats in the area l so I worry about them getting into the sheep corral. Does this electric fencing work against that as well?

    Just a terminology issue. Aluminum wire is fine but it is not 'high tensile'. That term should be reserved for the 12.5 gauge VERY stiff galvanized wire available from most suppliers. It is very difficult (impossible) to handle without the proper 'Spinning Jenny' dispenser. Once you learn a few of the tricks to handle it you have a permanent very strong fence (I have some put up 30 years ago that is still rust free and working great. It is not suitable for temporary cross fencing however because of how difficult it is to move without the dispenser. I enjoy hearing from others about how they make fencing and always learn something. Well done.
