There was one live action movie that came out in 1991 that had a homeless protagonist played by Robin Williams - The Fisher King. Satoshi Kon probably hadn't seen it. I still love Tokyo Godfathers.

i love this movie so much. I first watched it in Cinemax when they used to play independent, asian movies. That's when I first saw it when I was little.

What I love about this movie it's still; just in Japanese. I have yet to find or heard of an English dub version
Tokyo Godfathers will coming to theaters nationwide on March 9 and 11, 2020.
They did release it on DVD in the west and it's on the PSN.

Satoshi Kon was japanese mangaka, animator & director but he passed away in 2010
