- At the end of a rough year, Tokyo Godfathers proves to be the film we all need right now. It's a Christmas movie that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the greats, and champions a message of kindness and togetherness. Like all of Satoshi Kon's small but wonderful filmography, it's a picture that captures humanity at its terrifying worst, and its inspirational best.

It truly is a treasure for those who take the time to view it... ^_^
Fuck yeah!
How to make a very good ol R rated Christmas horror anime film for the studio A1 Pictures and studio Trigger have got Darling in the FranXX!?
That is a great movie, heart warming.
Satoshi Kon is one of the most tragic losses of our generation.
Very true
What happened to him ?
@@oleopathic pancreatic cancer
@@Thatguywithadog152 this is a shame. Works like this film ensure a great person never dies as he won't be forgotten by the viewers.
I was once homessless, as an 18 year old. I encountered unspeakable cruelty, violence, hardship, and suffering. Some of which I endured myself, most of which I had to watch others endure.
There is little I remember foundly about that time. I have PTSD from my year with no place to go, unwanted and reviled for the crime of having lost everything in the blink of an eye. But what I do remember fondly, is the fellow homeless or struggling people who I helped, and who helped me. The people whose hands I held as they cries over their loses, the people who told me my daily singing gave them to courage to get up in the mornings, the people who gave me scraps of their food and clothing when I had nothing, even though they also had very little.........
The blessed revile homeless people. "Leech", "trash", "worthless", "a burden to society"........... we are not human to them. We're not part of society to them. But no matter the reason for our homelessness, we are human, we have humanity and the capacity for love in all of us, and some of the most profound connection and love I've found in the world, I found in other homeless people..... and in myself, when I was homeless.
Those people who tormented me and reviled me in that time were blessed with a roof over their heads and food on the table, but in the end, I am blessed with my heart, and the people who shared theirs with me.
Thank you, for this video, thank you Satoshi Kon, for this movie, thank your loved ones, for being a part of your life, and thank you to those who see this comment, for reading. Happy Holidays everyone!
I am leaving this comment due to the fact that I cannot press the "Like" icon one thousand times. 🤝 😊

Your comment, read 3 years after you wrote it, made me cry. The courage it takes to be humane in the cold is perhaps best exemplified in the homeless, and all those reviled by society; I am glad you know the treasure you hold in your own golden heart.
For a country that doesn't celebrate the season as heavily as the rest of the world. Japan understands the true heart of the season the best sometimes, now I want a bucket of chicken.
@Ghost Troupe its kind of like valentines isn't it to them?
Watched this after being homeless for 4 years in my youth. Hit way closer to home, literally and figuratively, than anything else. Its fast become my favourite.
It hits close to home for me right now as well. I've been homeless for about a year now.
@@Seanthefox hey this might not mean much, but you've got this and i believe in you
God bless you 😢❤️
Changing from his structurally complex films to a somehow straightforward and heartwarming one like this, and still ticking all the right boxes, something only a master in full command of his art could do.
The world of animation misses Satoshi's genius.
I was always put off by the convoluted nature of Kon's movies (or those of Nolan to give another example), but yes, this movie is a fantastic exception that allows me to enjoy it to the fullest.
I miss him. I fully believe the animation industry would be different if he were still around
Just showed this to my girlfriend last weekend and she was glued to it.
After just losing my uncle. this film hits closer than before. He was homeless and passed away last month.
My condolences on your loss
My favorite movie to watch every Christmas. I love how the plot points are played more as fate, rather than convenience.
Actually, the plot points are acts of God. It's the "Kamikaze" or "heavenly wind", the same gusts of wind that sank the mongol ships twice.
Losing Satoshi Kon means we'll never get to experience one of his mind-bending trips using animation again, a medium he had a very distinct grasp on, but then again we could have lost him way sooner and none of this would have been possible. It's brutal, it's bitter, but as someone who lost his mom to cervical cancer this year I find solace, strength and inspiration in the things they accomplished. It's why we're here making video essays, making music or writing our screenplays I suppose.
It might be a reach to compare my hairdresser-cum-dance instructor mother to an anime director, but this video was deeply moving. I love ma and I miss her very much. Mr. Kon was truly one of a kind.
Big hug everyone.
Im sorry for your loss. Fuck cancer.
Satoshi Kon Just seems he was ahead of the time. I have to find the time to sit down and watch his filmography instead of watching RUclips videos on his filmography.
This movie is a fantastic representation of not letting your jaded edges cut others in a time when we should be embracing eachother, sharing merryment with all of mankind. Doing our best to shine that wonderfully warm light signaling. We are halfway through the dark! Together we as human being can make it through anything!
So eloquently stated 🙏🏿
all of satoshi kon’s movies find a way to touch specific parts of my soul really deeply its like magic
I like it, that you bring our "old school" classics to a newer generation. Thank you for this.
This world is not as bad as you think- People have been struggling with these topics for years- life was worse in the time of the 60-80s and anime's such as this as well as comedy's like Archie Bunker and the Jefferson's , movies like Blazing Saddles- all brought to the forefront the stupidity of racial and class injustice. Enjoy the movie it is great, i miss Satoshi Kon, his vision and gifts were a serious loss to the community. It has been a little over 10 years since he has died, i am glad this movie is getting highlighted ...
This is my favorite anime movie and I've never thought of it as much of a Christmas movie despite the setting. I'll definitely have to watch this gem before christmas.
I watch this movie every year for the holiday season along with some other favorites. It still is a great movie that has a very hopeful message that we all need today. Satoshi Kon knew how to make films that are very 'human'.
I remember the first time I heard the title name and thought to myself, Is this a Yakuza take off on the "The Godfather". but was so pleasantly surprised with how much it paralleled the old Black & White John Ford western "3 Godfathers" and how they struggle against the desert to save a new born whos mother has died in child birth, to whom they have sworn an oath. As these three have taken it upon themselves to get this baby back to it's mother.
edit: (sigh) my inability to spell is simply shocking at times.
I just loved the uncertain twists of this film, funny humorous emotional... All in a film
This movie is my favourite animated movie too! It's also one of my top-3 that I can never really organise. It's so funny, so well animated, so charming, but overall; I'ts got so much heart. I'll always love it no matter what.
Tokyo Godfathers is so great. I love seeing people giving it that recognition around Christmas. Great video!
Joe shows Muppet Christmas Carol.
Me: I'm in.
FYI Joe, a stage version of Tokyo Godfathers was presented at the New National Theatre, Tokyo back in 2021. Here's the introduction from the New National Theatre website:
'Tokyo Godfathers is the stage adaptation of the popular 2003 feature-length animated film directed by KON Satoshi, Tokyo Godfathers.
Performed as part of our "The Power of Caring" series, this production follows the story of three homeless people of different ages and genders who through various circumstances encounter a "miracle" on Christmas night in Tokyo. FUJITA Shuntaro demonstrates a sensitivity for the original work, a highly popular and regarded animated film, leaving the story as it is, but with the added expressiveness that can only come through drama. This version changes the year from 2003 to 2021, illuminating various issues currently faced in Tokyo and in Japan.
With his remarkable recent endeavours, the director FUJITA is a rising star and won the Best Director Award at the 28th Yomiuri Drama Awards in 2020. Whether directing musicals or plays, he continues to bring out works that stimulate discussion.'
I wish I could have been there.
Cheers.
The movie that refuses to blow its nose. Snorking your snot so it falls down the back of your throat may actually be more hygienic than using a handkerchief but, as a Westerner, I was trained to blow it into a handkerchief and carry it around with me for days.
That's my only notes for this movie, which is a great anime feature and one I recommend to anyone interested in starting to watch anime.
I watched this movie last week with my friend to conclude our month of watching Christmas specials. I hadn't seen this movie since I was 12 years old, and watching it again with a new perspective was so different. This movie is absolutely beautiful and it really keeps you drawn in for its entire duration. Your take on it was fantastic as well, and I love your channel.
I don't think I've ever teared up in a video essay. Something about your videos is just so perfectly beautiful and well made. I hope that you keep making these. You truly are one of the best.
A great movie with twists but also brings about lessons to pick and the greatest lesson is family is important.
So happy that this got dubbed, wanted to show it to my family but they don't want reading subtitles.
(sorry if my english is not the greatest, I´m from a foreign country that doesn´t speak english daily) I have been following your channel for a long time now, and everytime you talked about a heartfulled anime, I can´t stop crying for your words about the films and series. And I just wanted to thank you for that. Because, when I needed the most, your words always give me the strenght to see life as it is. Love you from Mexico.
Thank you so much for this comment. I'm touched that these videos have meant so much to you. Take care of yourself!
I just remember that it was your first video which made me watch Tokyo godfather lol . And here i was thinking after your notification, lets see what beyond ghibli has to say about Tokyo Godfather.
For me, this and Hogfather are yearly xmas rewatches.
I must not cry I must not cry I must not cry. Dammit Tokyo Godfathers you made me cry both tears of sadness and joy!
"..a warm and happy holiday"!! loved Tokyo Godfathers.
I watched this movie, along with other Satoshi Kon's works, during this past summer.
Wonderful experience. I really enjoyed this movie.
I had never heard of this movie! I'll definitely be watching it this weekend!
Tell us what you thought of it!
I still remember when I first watched the movie and it instantly became my favourite, it has something special which I didn't find elsewhere, I feel like I can rewatch this movie many times and would still not get bored of it.
Satoshi kon is not with us anymore but his works will always be.
one of the few anime, or movies in general, i view as a true 10/10
@brandotendie yeah i mean like i don’t really even go into number mode when i watch or talk about films or anything because i just enjoy it for what it is, but tokyo godfathers is one where i can comfortably say without thinking that i view it as 10/10. i wouldn’t go out of my way to describe or think of a movie that i view as “almost perfect” or whatever by declaring it a 9/10, i would simply just say or think that i really and truly do love that movie. but if i do think it is 10/10, may as well bust out those numbers.
Watching Tokyo Godfathers has been my Christmas Eve tradition for some years now.
This video is a beautiful observation.
This one is probs my favourite Kon, that or milliunem actress
I was a bottle return clerk for 30 years, and I could see so many of my customers in these characters.
The dreaming machine....... still waiting....... :'((((((
We missed the line"i am gonna make a offer he cant refuse"
Tokyo godfather might be one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen
Fantastic video as always. You never fail to capture the raw emotional essence of your subject matter. I hold all of Kon's films deep within my heart, but something about Tokyo Godfathers has always inexplicably stood out to me, and I think you were able to really help me articulate many of the core reasons. Thank you, and please keep up the good work!
Thank you for the spoiler-free video!! I'm meaning to watch this movie soon so I can't wait to watch the addendum as well!!
I have this funny relation to Satoshi Kon's creations, where I know my feelings will be raw and I'll probably sob a lot out of the sheer amount of humanity that his short but fantastic filmography exudes. I'm slowly working my way through it (so far I've watched Paprika and Paranoia Agent) and it feels so nice to get such an emotional reaction from them.
I really wish Kon could've stayed with us for a bit longer, but I appreciate that he managed to do the things he did.
I've had to call on a lot of my friends for help recently and felt incredible inner shame. This movie showed me how we all rely on each other and I feel a little less bad. It's such a beautiful film.
🌸❤️The content we need at the right moment in time❤️🌸
As always, thank you for this.
Great job on the video! With how the whole year has been for everyone, this feels like a much needed feeling of warmth this season.
you've reminded me to watch this!
This movie is a hidden Gem.
We needed this video, just like we need to watch / re-watch the movie. Thank you!
I really love your videos
I watched this for the first time about a week ago, so good.
Man I love this channel.
Perfect review
Your videos constantly bring me to tears in the best of ways. They are so well done and genuine. Take care and thank you.
Was going to watch this for the first time with my family this holiday season. Perfect timing for a quality video!
I loved the movie so much! happy holidays!
Great work, Joe.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I love your videos from the bottom of my heart ❤ Happy Holidays ❤
Thank you for doing such insightful and humane work. Wishing you all good things.
The video that brought me to you channel finally comes full circle. It's been a fantastic four years, I can't wait to see what you put out every year to come. Merry Christmas Joe.
I watched it years ago through your recommendation, thanks Joe for sharing it with us
Seems like a very interesting watch, I'll give it a try when I have the time. Amazing video as always, and happy holidays!
Adding it to my watchlist. ☺
Take care!
What a great job on this fantastic movie, thanks from France for this analyse!
Great film and great commentary.
Ever since I first heard about this movie I had been dying to see it but couldn't seem to find it anywhere. I finally got to see it this year back in July on Hoopla, a FREE service through or local public library, and I am totally smitten! I've watched it 3 times now and will watch it many more times. Thank you because it was your original posting about it that got my curiosity up to want to see it.
Yep, tine to rewatch Tokyo Godfathers.❤️
I just watched this last weekend!! It was such a heartwarming film and the last movie of Satoshi Kons I hadn’t seen. It really was a masterpiece
Happy holidays Joe. Thanks to you four years ago, Tokyo Godfathers became my favorite movie, and a flick I watch during Christmas. Hope you’re okay!

I just want to say I love your videos I love your voice and I love the attention you give to your videos. Please never stop making videos. I'll watch every last one.
Watched it on this weeks Tuesday for the first time.
Definitely deserves its place on the shelf of Christmas wonders.
Awesome review, I feel the same way too
I found this movie through your channel. And honestly I could not be more greatful
Literally the timing you upload this, I just finished we watching the film.
This is probably one of my favorite films. Not just anime films but films in general. Every time I rewatch it I notice something new. Its just a wonderful holiday picture
Thank you for making this and I am so happy that I am not the only who thinks this is the best movie of all time.
Funny you would upload this! I literally watched Tokyo Godfathers because of the glowing recommendation you gave it in your “Non-Ghibli Movies” video. I loved it, its style reminds me of Coen Brothers movies. Shit, I watched all of Kon’s movies after watching your video lol
I didn't even get to half of this video and you again make me tear up.....you monster. Another beautiful and heartwarming essay, I havent watch Tokyo Godfathers in years......I think is about time to watch it again.
I was just searching this movie to possibly rent on RUclips and saw you uploaded this. Now I'm definitely going to watch it.
Thank you ! I wish you a happy holiday too
Watched this for the first time as part of our movie review podcast. Happy to say that this is one will be on rotation during the holidays for years to come!
It’s just not Christmas until Hana falls from Nakatomi Plaza.
Watched it for the first time last night and fell in love with it! Can’t wait to watch it again with my family when I come home for the holidays 😊
Happy Christmas all, and thanks Joe for the videos.
Tokyo Godfathers was my first Kon film
So glad you revisited one of my top Anime picks. A lovely film that really should get more exposure.
Man your scripts are soo good
While it isn’t exactly Japanese or anime, I think you’d LOVE the new “Wolfwalkers” on Apple TV+. It’s brilliant animation and beautiful music blend perfectly with its themes of chosen family and freeing oneself from the shackles of public opinion.
I saw it a couple of days ago, it was absolutely stunning! Just like everything Cartoon Saloon makes. One day I'll make a video about my favourite western animation and you can be damn sure it'll be featured!!
I was looking forward to the new video, so happy it's out ( I wish you happy holidays from France) 🎆
Joyeux Noël!
I first watched Tokyo Godfathers at your recommendation in the old video, and it's become one of my favorites and an annual watch as well.
That's amazing to hear! So pleased you liked it!
Me Too! This still my top spot film!
I have many equally favorite animated movies ( *Porco Rosso* for instance, *Ghost in the Shell* , tutti quanti) and *Tokyo Godfathers* certainly is one of them for all the reasons listed in this video.
It's actually the only Satoshi Kon movie I enjoyed, and what a thrill!
Hi there! Ive been watching your videos for a long time and I use your recommendations to decide which anime to watch next and I’ve been able to see so many amazing ones because of you. The Tokyo godfathers video was one of the first ever videos of your that I saw and I watched the movie because of it. And I fell in love with it, both the movie and other works of Sathoshi Kon. Not just him but almost all the anime’s you’ve talked about end up having a special place in my heart. So thank you so much for the videos and your channel and your recommendations. I’m looking forward to your new videos as well!
I'm so happy to hear that!! You've honestly made my day, and I'm so glad I've been able to share all of my favourites with everyone over the years :)
Friendship is not family. It can be better but it’s not the same
This film was just so great and i had a lot of fun and even laught while watching it. I hope it becomes more popular 🙂
I actually watched this movie because of your video 4 years ago! I took it as a recommendation, I thought, I could always trust your judgement. Partly also because I wanted to consume more from Satoshi Kon. Indeed, I found myself liking the movie very much, and I agree with everything you said then--and what you say now. Thank you for this.
