Let’s not forget the bond between Australia and Greece. Many Australians paid the ultimate sacrifice, especially during the Battle of Crete. So very very proud to be Greek Australian 🇬🇷🇦🇺
My father came to Australia in 1938. When he presented to be naturalised some years later ( to become a British subject ) he was asked if he would defend Australia and he confirmed he would . He was then asked if Australia went to war with Greece would he? And he immediately replied I would never fight my own brothers! The officer put his hand on my fathers shoulder and said you are the sort of man we need. My father died here at 80 yo , raised us five kids with our Australian mother and never drew a pension having come here penniless and uneducated. That tenacity with which the Greek people resisted the nazis was in his dna too. I feel like a Pygmy compared to all of them ! May the memory of all who fell be eternal and we all as Australians strive to capture their philotimo!
