It's so inspiring to know how the brave Greeks fought against the fascist Italians and Nazis. But please remember the many Brits, New Zealand and Australian soldiers/airmen and sailors who fought and died for Greece in both the mainland and Crete.

Nobody remembers the Greek women, who carried ammunition on their backs through cold and snow to supply the front lines, who carried food and water to the troops through the harshest environments and under artillery fire, who supplied the troops with clean clothes and shoes. Those who joined the resistance and helped the Allied forces with espionage and intelligence! Those who fought alongside men, like men, because in Greece even women fight! We owe them at least our gratitude for the sacrifices they made!
HONOR AND GLORY TO THE GREEK WOMEN!

Why nobody ever speaks about the greco-german war in 1941?
The greeks were already pushing back the italian forces at the western front and the bulgarian forces at the eastern front. Yes, they were outnumbered and poorly equipped and got no help from the Allies to these fronts. Then the Germans came and intervened but instead of attacking the greek army head on, the German troops invaded through Bulgaria. The bulk of the Greek army was on the Albanian border and could not spare troop reinforcements to the the Bulgarian defensive line. The germans tried to circle the greeks but some troops managed to get in time to the Metaxas Line and man the fortifications. In the battle of Metaxas line the greeks stopped the germans who suffered heavy losses. And in fact the greeks defeated the germans in every skirmish there. The german troops never managed to capture the Metaxas line. It was only when the greek goverment ordered the greek army to stand down and capitulate to avoid any further slaughter. Even then some troops refused to do so and kept on fighting but the war for mainland Geece was pretty much over.
And of course after the above we have the Battle of Crete where the german troops suffered such casualties that certain german divisions used at Crete were never used again.
And let us not forget the massive resistance the german troops encountered from the civilian population with the end of the invasion.
But how were the greeks able to do these things against all odds? The answer is simple! Most of the soldiers were praying during this struggle and as Orthodox christians God helped them. That's why the german officers released them and allowed them to go home. Through the intercession of the Theotokos and the saints the greeks managed to do these. And that's why the germans didn't harm Mount Athos, because God wouldn't allow that to happen.

      martini carbine
Yes friend it's true, the whole island of Crete rose to fight he Germans when they attacked it, from the civilian men to the priests and the nuns, even elderly men with their walking sticks killed some German commandos as they were falling from the sky.
As for how the Germans managed to occupy Greece in two months as molossian shepherd said, they avoided the main Greek army and with their Bulgarian allies marched through the country whilst the Greek army was busy driving back the Italians and occupying their Albanian allies.
Your father was part of the British empires allied forces in Crete? Kudos to him and to the rest of the allies for fighting in our side.

    • @Nikonomicon

Or because Nazi ideals did not allow them to ravage Christian holy sites, and the reason greek troops were not killed and could defend themselves from the giant crashing over them was the terrain and courage of those men. The Nazi officers let the people go back to their homes because they surrendered willingly.

My mother told me about my grand father and others who were involved as a group against the Nazi's, and there were traitors that informed the Nazi's . Someone tipped of my father and other's about the Nazi's being informed about them,so my grand mother and her children escaped into the mountains, and as they were escaping they were hearing gunfire in the back ground (probably coming from there village). The next day the church bells were ringing in the town square, which drew the towns people in to see, and it was the Nazi's that were ringing the bell .They showed the town folk a bus full of dead Greeks, and warned against any up rising against the German occupation . My mother was a little girl at the time and she told me the story. This took place on the Island of Lesbos in a village . I wanted to ask my Grand father for more details about this story, but at the time he had Alzheimer(he died in the 1990's ) and my aunt did not want me to stir up a bad part of his past.

As a Greek, I felt a sense of good pride while watching this mini documentary and one cannot ignore what certain prolific world leaders praised about the Greek victory over the Italians. But I would like to add another variable that contributed to the Greek victory: A significant portion of the Italian army did not have the spirit to invade Greece. It wasn't in their hearts. They, like the Greeks, would rather play music, eat, dance, make love and enjoy life. But Mussolini and his Axis cronies forced them into it and, as we all know, paid the price for their arrogance. I'm in no way discrediting the fighting spirit of the Italians. I'm certain they would have repelled a Greek invasion if the tables were turned the other way. Morale plays a massive role when it comes to an outcome of a fight, no matter what the odds are, and the Greeks had all of it, and the Italians had little of it.

On 28 OF OCTOBER 2022 WE CELEBRATE THE OXI DAY THE GREEKS SAID TO ITALIANS IN 1940 DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
World War II is considered to be the most formidable of all time known to mankind. It lasted from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. It left about 60 million soldiers dead worldwide and hundreds of thousands of civilians died from torture, executions and starvation. In Greece, 88,300 soldiers and 325,000 civilians lost their lives.

Widespread industrial unrest gave Metaxas justification to declare a state of emergency on August 4, 1936. With the king's support, he suspended the parliament indefinitely and suspended various articles of the constitution. In a national radio address, The regime created as a result of this self-coup became known as "the 4th of August" after the date of its proclamation.

ochi means no in modern greek
no is an ancient greek word you can find it in compound words such as νηστεύω nistevo νη+εσθίω=τρωγω,νηστεία ,nisteia, ancient meaning is abstain from food, modern meaning don't eat meat, eggs and milk, in holy week most greek are fasting νηστευουν and also every wednesday and friday
οther words are νηνεμία(νη+ανεμος) ninemia means no wind ,νήπιο (νη+έπος=λογος) means toddler, νηπενθής (νη+πένθος) means exempt from mourning

Very good effort to keep and promote the spirit of OXI Day in the US, especially because modern-day English-speaking historians, like John Keegan and Anthony Beevor, try to reduce the importance of the OXI day in the outcome of WW2. Their position is that the Greek campaign did not delay the German attack against Russia, because the weather was bad with many rains that turned the Russian plain into a mud field unsuitable for tanks, so the Germans had to wait regardless of the campaign in Greece. Unfortunately, these positions find their way into modern videos created about WW2, seen by hundreds of thousand viewers on RUclips, so your efforts are of exceptional importance.
However, I would like to point out that the Greek soldier pictures shown after 2:12 and the demonstration, are not from what happened on October 28, 1940. These are pictures of communist guerillas, probably from the Civil war that followed, and the demonstration was the one organized by the Greek Communist party in Syntagma square when the Germans left Athens in 1944. Also, the troops shown parading and riding in armored cars, were from the liberation of Athens in 1944 and were Greek and British troops.
If you do not have original film material from October 28, 1940, allow me to give you some links bellow, for videos of the Athens War Museum:
    ruclips.net/video/dM0pdlvCkwE/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/yV7dOKk8_pc/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/GSnKjq4DcnI/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/HblloDEoQzI/видео.html
My complaint is that although there are hundreds of videos in the Athens War Museum and the Hellenic Army General Staff archives, including the Greek forces in Korea and the bloodiest battle at Outpost Harry, none of these videos have English subtitles, at the very least, so that non-Greek people can learn about these events, from official Greek sources. Maybe your foundation can cooperate with the relevant Greek institutions and improve this situation.

Respect to Brits, Anzacs and all who fought and died in Greece too.
Those proud days Greeks stood together, that is why they succeeded. And later in the Resistance, all the men that went to ELAS pictured here were fighting for their country.
Only later they were used by their leaders to promote communism and that lead to civil war. No Greek fought the Axis in the name of communism nor capitalism. They were later used by elitistic people with political agendas of their own. If Greeks of today understand that Politics, and Ideologies are means of Mass Control, they will be the strongest of all.

I remember flying a heavily subsidized Olympic Airways to Istanbul from Athens and realizing that this kind of waste cannot continue. There are a myriad other examples. After all Greece has less population than Istanbul, without the EU its Drachma would be completely devalued today, which in a way would be good for tourists though not quite as good for the Greeks.

The most hillarious bit of this comment isn't you telling me to read a book, it's your regard towards history. You must see it as a mere sequence of dates and events.
But the fact a Greek tells people to read, is a true irony. I don't remember anyone holding a book on a park bench, bus or train. They're all holding a smart phone!

Metaxas was a fascist dictator. He admired Musolini it was very diffcult for him to say no. He and his generals didn t think that the army and the greeks have the power to stop the Italians. But they did although some of them fought with guns from the I World War. USA now uses this part of the greek history as a propaganda tool. Greeks resisted no matter what your as feels about it, if your infomartion lacks read a book. It ain t gonna get you fatter, but wiser

Hm.. I'm guessing the fact Greece was in debt to the Brits had nothing to do with "oxi day" (my ass)...
Historic documentaries of the 21st century are a joke.
People always get half the information, and stick to what's on a screen. The worst bit is, this is what history as a class teaches in schools. Half the facts.
