      Yes. For those few seconds I am transported back to 1985. Sometimes I am back in 5th year classroom, some cringy educational VHS is playing on the large CRT TV on its wheeled cart. Sometimes in an orange carpeted bedroom with wood panel laminate wardrobes sat in front of a Commodore 64. 😊

    Hey Daniel. I have a *similar* story to yours. I grew up in a Christian home during the satanic panic. To my parents frustration I absolutely fell in love with all things "dungeon." I never left the faith but I did grow restless in adulthood. Then I discovered Dr. Michael Heiser (an Old Testament scholar). His book the Unseen Realm changed how I read scripture. You might even consider giving his Unseen Realm documentary a watch here on RUclips. And, believe it or not, I share this for no other reason than you seem to have a genuine interest in the subject matter and his book very much aligns with aspects of this game.

    Great review as always. Game sounds like a heck of a lot of fun. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the preachy bits of the game. Christian myself, but play games with mostly non-Christian. I think we’d all most likely have an equal amount of good time with it regardless of the theme and its use.

      @playdeliverance 5 месяцев назад +2

      We did what we could to be *as theologically sound as possible* given that this is meant to be a fantasy game. Did we get there? No way, but we tried hard, and I think our players looking for that see it for sure 😇

    Whew, buddy, I do not envy you as more people see this video. Touchy subjects all round. Fwiw, I'm not Christian by a country mile, I'm a theistic Gnostic Luciferian Hellenic Pagan(mouthful I know), but certainly I do think it's fine for "Christian media" to exist. I just wish they had higher quality media lmao. Less Finding Jesus, more original Veggie Tales for the kids, and less agressively preachy and actively backwards YEC stuff(it can still be Christian without being preachy or YEC) for the adults. Also, game looks neat mechanically.

    As a Christian that REALLY tries to look at thing from all points of views I do get how people might find the depression darkness card insulting. The sexual immorality card not so much. (Hear me out) I think it works because it’s doesn’t get too specific. The problem could arise from other peoples perception of what the card is referring to. But it’s vague it could be anything. You bring up the Exorcist, it been A LONG time since I’ve seen it, but doesn’t the demon make sexual advances towards the priest? It’s the same thing. It could also be sexual immorality towards children.🤷🏻‍♂️. I think the flavor text works just with more caution.
    They should also stay away from standee immorality. If you don’t know, that’s the sin of preferring cardboard over plastic😂😉

      @@TheDungeonDive oh I agree, Thankfully this is just a board game. he wasn’t specific as to not commit any injustice towards minorities or towards anybody for that matter. His personal beliefs on that matter aren’t relevant. If he wanted to use it as a soapbox he could have, and people could have judged that’s. As long as he’s not trying to stomp out someone else’s liberties I’m good. I’m a Christian yet I am perfectly fine with people who do not believe in God. This maybe getting a little deep here. (Feel free to let me know if you want me to back off and go back to board games 😂)
      So like I said, I’m a Christian. Part of me says , anyone who is not a Christian must think Christianity is wrong. Yet I’m fine with this. As long as they don’t get insulting we can get along knowing we have difference of opinions. My best friend in the world is a gay agnostic. We’ve been friends for almost 30 years. I even asked him to take custody of my children if something happens to me and my wife. We have deferences of opinions about God and religion but mutual respect Keeps us together.

    Nothing is questionable. It’s a game made for Christian’s by Christian’s.
    I don’t ask my homosexual friends to be less homosexual to protect my Christian friends from being exposed to homosexuality. Just like I won’t ask my Christian based board game to be less Christian to keep from hurting the feelings of my homosexual friends.
    By the way, they don’t need shielding from anything. They are just as capable of the mental fortitude necessary to withstand seeing a couple of cards in a game that has something written on it they don’t agree with. Without needing to be coddled about it.

This hasn't stopped me from really enjoying Deliverance. It is beautifully produced and an excellent game. The acrylic standees are amongst the best in my collection, and it is unlikely that I will ever use the miniatures.

    Great review! I don't have an answer for all the darkness cards, but as far as Manic Depression, I don't see why that can't be something a demon could inflict on someone. Doesn't mean that's the cause of all depression, but lore wise, that could realistically be something a demon could inflict on you. I could also see demons causing heart attacks or cancer or any other ailment. They are supernatural beings with powers beyond our understanding afterall... lore wise of course.

    • @TheDungeonDive

      The real world problem with blaming mental illness on demons is that then people will think they can cure their problems with prayer, and that doesn't work. Mental illness needs proper medical supervision and modern medicine and science.

    sorry for asking off topic but my question is can a person believe in God but doesn't go to church? just curious for i think myself as one who believes but don't like going to church because for a weird reason it makes me want to fall asleep & therefore don't want people think negative of me for falling asleep in church
    & since you mentioned that you're used to be a Christian thought it would be a good question to ask
    sorry for asking here and not some other way

    • @Urek968
      @Urek968 5 месяцев назад +6

      A good church full of good people is a great place learn and grow your faith but it is not what saves someone. If you trust that Jesus died on a cross for your sins and that only he can get you to heaven then you are a Christian even if you do not go to church. Believing that god exists does not make you a Christian. Even the demons know god exists. It is trusting in Jesus alone that make you a Christian.

      Faith can be communal but it can also be individual. And in practice it's at least some mixture of both for people.
      Church activity may be required for some specific denominations, but it is not a requirement for faith itself.

      Exactly Jesus said (my paraphrase) 'i am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father except through me' this infuriated the Pharisees as they believed their works and law keeping was their ticket to heaven. There is only one way but the world will try to tell you there are many ways which is false .@@Urek968

    Hard pass for Totoro. Manic depression wtf. I talked to the designer years ago before Jamie booted him from the group for preaching. The primary purpose of the game is to provide Evangelical Christians a dungeon crawl that doesn’t offend their theological sensibilities, as most games dealing with magic such as Spirit Island (egads!) do. The secondary purpose is to be a witnessing tool, as all things are for this kind of Christian. Ghost Stories is not interested in converting people to Daoism.

    Ive worked as a Psychiatric Nurse in the UK for 17 years. And like you said naming Manic Depression as a "darkness' associating it with Demonic posession is to me highly offensive. Ive nursed people from all backgrounds suffering from different forms of depression from acute to even catatonic. Some of them were christisns, some muslims some athiests. Mental health doesnt discriminate on wether you believe in God or not. Im not Religious, I do lean more towards the Eastern spirituality, I do respect Jesus as a teacher, but this seems very "fire and brimstone" and a lot of ignorance. Ill give this one a miss.

      @@SimpleRoadThe game is a thinly veiled dungeon crawler reimagining of This Present Darkness, a major part of the Christian spiritual warfare movement of the 1980’s, which specifically cast mental health and LGBTQ identities as demonic influences that must be excorcised through “spiritual warfare”. I agree with the review that it makes fine combat fantasy, but we should be clear eyed about what it is and what it derives from. Which is explicitly 80’s Christian spiritual warfare.

    I don't understand why it's alienating when there's not an even distribution of male, female and non binary characters in a board game. But bringing christianity in is just totally ok.
    For me at least the theme completely alienates me.
    I don't understand why there can be a lot of backlash if there's a bit of cleavage on the booby characters, but christian symbols is ok.
    I remember the outrage about the conquistador SoB game and how a wolfenstein board game had to drop the swastikas.
    The hypocrisy is real.
