On spot my swing for 20 years. After having watched this video this morning a bucket of balls on the ranch I went 9 holes 30 shots better than last night! Best of all it finally made me understand, that what I have been doing for 20 years, just does not work any longer at the age of 67! Thank you - I'm playing golf again! :)
I can't wait to try this out on the range. This has been an issue all season for me, I either block right or overcompensate and hook my approach. And, when things really go bad, this causes me to sh*nk it, because my hips are already through and my arms are so far behind I come up and out of my swing and hit it off the hosel. Excellent video, thank you.
This is a great drill to use to stop the shanks from excessive inside path aswell 👍it helps stop me dropping the club too much on inside and also stops early extension Great video mate :)
Great information! I am a single digit handicap who is close to getting to the next level. It I struggle with being stuck and on my bad days it can get ugly. Mostly see this issue off the tee with the driver and 3 wood. The club gets behind me a bit too much on the back swing too
It's not just the better golfers - I had just this problem and I was off 21. This is a great mental image to have to help stop getting stuck behind. After concentrating on this (and trying to remember a little pause at the top) I shot my first sub 90 round ever. Now playing off 19. Thanks Chris!
Outstanding video!! Left shoulder pop up, too inside, too shallow, too much lateral slide are my issues. This solves them all. Thanks for posting, Chris!!
Chris, a big thanks for this. My game had deteriorated over the last few months and my pals all telling me to “get through it and turn better”. However, what I now appreciate is turning is v difficult when you lean excessively to the right. The belt and buttons thought allowed me to enjoy my game yesterday and hopefully I can build on that.
Thank you! This is not the first time I'm getting stuck. But, this is the first time I found out that it's what's happening. I've tried trying to draw the ball and it fixes it - but only temporarily. I'll try it.
Very well explained and thank you Chris. I'm a low h'capper with this problem creeping in from time to time, at the moment seemingly outside of my control. To be honest it's sapping my enthusiasm and now I can' t wait to take your thoughts to the range and work on eliminating it. I used to have an excessive left hip bump towards the target which I'm trying to turn into a proper hip clearance - I'm guessing they're all related movements. Slowly slowly it's coming together and no doubt your wisdom will really help me. Many thanks and cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave
This is exactly the problem that I have been wrestling with. Great video and drill - I’m definitely going to work this into my practice and watch it again. Thanks Chris - and have a great New Year!
Hi, last few weeks this is happening to me. My playing partner (former #1 golfer at Big Ten School) is telling me: 1. Flipping the club to far inside. 2. Gripping way to tight. 3. Grip way ahead of my club. The bad shots with my driver are either Blocks or I have actually hit the ball with the bottom of the driver. I am also sometimes topping my fairway woods.
I was a 2 handicap. This must be what I'm doing that last two years. Felt like I was swaying my hips forward which would do exactly what you are saying.
This is tough for me and especially since so many are saying to start the downswing with a bump of the hips, moving that alignment between your sternum and belt buckle.
This is exactly where I am right now. It's pretty strange too as I used to be the total opposite. I've been playing for about 5 years now and when i started I was excessively over the top. This has also been a gradual thing too. It started has hitting slight draws and has turned into full blown hooks or big blocks. Funny how much your swing can go a different direction.
Thanks that will certainly be very helpful as I'm struggling a bit with those very problems : big bad pushes to the right, and (usually when I start thinking "OK, aim to the left, then") big bad hooks. My thought to limit the problem had been to try to quiet the hips and keep the back foot flat for as long as possible. Which helps but not always. Zipper and buckle will be another thought that will certainly allow me to contain that and get back to straighter paths (and ball flights, hopefully ;) )
I found that when I tipped my lead shoulder to steep on the backswing, my shoulder would be to far up on the downswing, getting stuck pretty much exactly how you described
Would you recommend this even for players usually struggling with over the top/steep? My iron game improved by feeling a more inside out path but driver snap hooks even though the plane is still more on the steep side than too shallow. I’m afraid this will promote the steep pattern? Thanks
This is a bit of an issue for me, just now it's mainly blocks so manageable, but when you get a couple of hooks as well in a round it kills your confidence, as you just haven't a clue where to aim and start gambling and aiming at trouble, so if you hit a good shot you end up in trouble as well!
Nice video again @ChrisRyan. Just a quick question regarding setup to ball. should you feel like you are about fall over the ball in terms of weight being on your heels or balls of your feet?
ChrisRyanGolf many thanks for your reply. A last thing, is there a simplified checklist that you have regards posture and or setup that you use before you hit a shot? obviously don't want to many thoughts but a say 5 point plan of attack??
cud you do a video about having your arms to connected to your torso i find if i am to connected a lot of bad things happen i find it hard to swing but if i am not connected i find bad things happen also can you help
After further review, I've confirmed that it's not a conscious decision to make your body do a 'side-bend' during the golf swing. The side bend happens involuntarily or (naturally) when you keep your arms & hands underneath your chest through the golf swing. Simple.
funny sort of issue, Woods does this, he's really good at it and why he blocks the ball to the right, or hooks it... the issue is the grip. Nothing else. Haney tried to get Woods to hold the club more in the hands. This whole thing is about holding the club in the fingers. When you hold in the fingers you pull flat on the transition under pressure. This causes the inside move. Hold the club in your hands, Hogan had it WRONG... Oh yeah, and this would be the reason Tiger Woods has had 4 back operations, holding the club in your fingers screws up your back... 99% of golfers make this move, most come over the top, the very good ones pull flat and come inside...CHANGE YOUR GRIP... I bet a weeks pay DJ lost on the weekend because he was pulling flat at the transition, hitting cuts... I haven't seen it, but that would be my guess.
being stuck is only a result of the hips getting too quick or sliding during the downswing... leaving your arms behind you. slow your hips or start your downswing with your arms.

I need to stream this in my brain over and over. Simple and classic good instruction.

Sir, excellent video. This is precisely my problem in terms of toe shots. Thank you very much for this tutorial. Best regards from South Florida
Thank you! You’ve saved my marriage!! When I play bad It’s all her fault... 😂

Great tip and drill 👍🏻🏌🏽♂️
Another freaking BRILLIANT tip!! thank you so much-- Please come to California/San Diego!!
Fantastic illustration. You are a sharp man and instructor. All the best to you!!! Keep making a great impact. Please know that you do.
Thanks Jay appreciate it
Such a great video, exactly my problem!

Thanks for the diagnosis, I hit great shots yesterday. Due to getting stuck, when they were bad, they look horrible!
Huge help. Thank you.😀

This drill, combined with a focus on what your pelvis is doing on the back swing, can do wonders for those of us that fight the hook.
This is tough for me and especially since so many are saying to start the downswing with a bump of the hips, moving that alignment between your sternum and belt buckle.
Another great Video!!
Very good visual.
Exactly what I am doing , but only with my driver. Irons are straight. I have over compensated for trying to hit the driver on the upswing.
I love the concept, would you say the feet together drill is good for this as well? Hitting little 3/4 shots with your feet together?
Yup, this is me exactly!

François Desmoulins-Lebeault thanks and hope it helps next time you get to play or practice.

I always thought "stuck" refers to the fact that the rotation stops kinda midway. But excellent instruction and explanation!
Firing the hips early will also cause too much right side bend, dropping the right shoulder and putting the club in a stuck position.
Very well presented
I found that when I tipped my lead shoulder to steep on the backswing, my shoulder would be to far up on the downswing, getting stuck pretty much exactly how you described
This video is stellar. Thank you.
Life saver...!!
Excellent and simple fix. Could have been explained quicker but great info.
There is some great stuff trelated to this issue provided by Mike Malaska.
Would you recommend this even for players usually struggling with over the top/steep? My iron game improved by feeling a more inside out path but driver snap hooks even though the plane is still more on the steep side than too shallow. I’m afraid this will promote the steep pattern? Thanks

R Gallagher thanks for commenting and your dead right, can be so tricky when you are not sure which side you are going to miss it on
I find it I stand a bit open at address this helps me with this problem.
Very helpful, thanks :)
This was exactly what I did but have changed it recently
So would you eliminate the hip bump all together?
Nice video again @ChrisRyan. Just a quick question regarding setup to ball. should you feel like you are about fall over the ball in terms of weight being on your heels or balls of your feet?
@Shaz Ramzan Through the centre of the feet, not out on the toes or sat back on the heels.
Shaz Ramzan hi Shaz, I'd go with mid foot at set up for all clubs. Will put you in the best balance to swing
ChrisRyanGolf many thanks for your reply. A last thing, is there a simplified checklist that you have regards posture and or setup that you use before you hit a shot? obviously don't want to many thoughts but a say 5 point plan of attack??
golfninja thank you for your help. :) I'm needing a setup and or posture checklist to do before every shot.
this happens to me all the time with my driver which means massive push shot or unreal pull hooks. any advice?
cud you do a video about having your arms to connected to your torso i find if i am to connected a lot of bad things happen i find it hard to swing but if i am not connected i find bad things happen also can you help
This can also be caused by insufficient hip turn. You have to feel like you are coming over the top.
Genius

Is it possible that too much stuck and causing shanks?
when i am making my worst shots i do this badly. usually when i am tired and hot.
I’m stuck in the hardness.
Push right or hard left hook......I guess I’m a “better” player, cause this is me.
Chris why does the body move badly like this?
