Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I always thought your explanations were clear and understandable. Yet you keep finding ways to explain it even better!
I appreciate that!
As a teacher I want to thank you for breaking down your application process. Many of my students get so hung up about acrylic painting that they are scared to do it. You made it so effortless and easy to comprehend that at the end of class my students actually applauded. You broke down what I have been preaching to them and I was able to talk through and demonstrate right along with you. Keep going strong and if you're ever in NYC I'd love for you to come to my class.
Last night Hurricane Ida swept through . It has been a stressful time. This paint coach video was such a wonderful gift to find in my feed today. Will watch it as a reward after clean-up!
“Lost in the darkness” - classic! 😂
You are so good, Chris. Never saw a painting of yours I didn’t like. Thanks for this lesson.
Thanks so much!
You are not only a talented artist, but you’ve also got a killer sense of humor😊
Main now is very beautiful with different colors of leaves. many artists come here to paint.
I just want to say that I appreciate you doing what you do you really have helped me improve my paintings and with improvements, motivation to continue painting has come along with it. So thank you lots
Thank you coach. I've made an appointment to go get painting my friend's garden cottage!! All because of you. 🙏🙏
you always make oil painting simple and beautiful, I've always loved the box ideas. Thank u 🙏🏻❤️
I really really loved this demonstration...... you are such a talented artist and teacher. Thank you again Chris
Im no longer "lost into the darkness". Thanks for sharing. Like 👍
I set up a still life yesterday--so this is timely. I have a darker colored drape behind a glass vase with flowers. I really love painting cloth so I've been practicing using this drape and glass objects. The glass vase, with flowers, casts a shadow onto the wall--the wall is a cream color--I couldn't rig up a dark background. I bought a large pad of canvas paper and I'm using it to practice painting objects I eventually want to a final piece. That's a great tip about the shadow box you created--I need to do the same.
I am a fine art student and now ive always tried to find an easier way to paint still life and not complicate it. thank you so much for this demonstration Chris.
Great video Chris. Thank you so much for another clear, concise, and interesting video. Great topic, with just the right amount of info. Actually got me a little excited to try still life on my own.
Thank you so much, as usual! The petals/grapes/complex shapes tip was specially helpful!
I love your paintings and I adore your personality!
blue and orange are good together, green and red, purple and yellow, red and black.
i painted it, and this is my favorite painting.
"Suggest the existence of grapes", poetry
Incredibly informative video
THANK YOU!!!!
Yes, Bada, Boom !! you have a painting. Thanks Chris for taking us through this. Especially those of us who put those details in way too soon. I can follow this using my Water soluble oils. 🌴Tallahassee 🌴
Man your content is so fresh and thought-provoking. I hope you become a gazillionaire.
Really loved this painting man. Reminds me of some of Manet’s still lifes. Also great info here. Loved the humor as well. Keep up the great work! 👍
Outstanding instruction. Thank you!
Thanks for giving us a great informational video again. I’m always learning from your videos

We are in lockdown in Victoria- Australia, so appreciate your tutorials
Love this painting! ❤️👍
🔥🔥🔥 this video was everything I needed! So much info! Can't wait to do this!
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos are sooooo helpful! Thanks😊
ill admit im not a huge fan of still lifes, but... now i really want to do one! that coffee clip got me crackin up, lol
So awesome to watch this after a day of painting stillife. I'd say you nailed that orange beautifully, as well as all the other elements. It's fun to paint with white drapes too, as all the subtle colours can be sought out. Bravo. Love the coffee insert. I enjoy the coffee too, but got to switch to herbal tea after lunch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks again for the information and for your enthusiasm, it's infectious. 🤗👍
Glad you enjoy it!
Great work on painting and great work on inspiring
Good painting, video and timing with strada challenge September painting from life starting tomorrow. 😃

Thanks Coach!
Loved it !!!
Your videos are so awesome
Once again... thank you so much for this content
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you for this!
Yep, yep... That is definitely a Nick Cage collage in the background. 😂 Probably has been in the background of many of your videos but I just became conscious of its presence.
So great! Thank you!!!
Wow 😍😍😍
Thank You!
Whoever puts that thumbs down on my coach needs to just leave my coach alone!!
Hey Guys, you don’t just have to paint flowers and fruit. I did a series called collections. African Kuba cloth in the back, then some African headrests, then some more African objects. You could do a wrench with a screwdriver and a saw. A cat on a chair with cool fabric behind. Books and nick-nacks on a table with fabric. Just stuff you have around the house.
Good advice. So much to choose from!
I'm jealous you live in the heat of Florida right now. Enjoy! 🇨🇦
Im shocked. painting became so easy just now. I-I-Im speechless 👏👏👏
Did I say before that he looks so handsome with this haircut
You are so cute! Helps keep my interest in painting 😉
Thank you 😊❤️
in this video, you have perfect hair without hat!
"Lost into the darkness"😂😂
"Lost into the darkness"🔥🔥🔥
Fab!
Awesome
Your videos are so helpful! What sort of lights to you use to paint by?
I think a shadowbox would appear as a showcase of items to eat/knock over/lay on/carry off to my klepto cat.
Great…thanks!
please make a video on understanding colors: harmony of colors.
is there too hot? come to Maine the weather is perfect!
I like to dabble in lots of mediums. I've had a small set of water mixable oils for a while now (um....2 years?). I bought them thinking it would be a good alternative to regular oils because you wouldn't have to deal with solvents, etc. and thinking it would be a quicker clean up (not true). Anyway --- I went on a plein air excursion with a few friends and brought my watercolors. Didn't create anything to write home about but I did have an epiphany. Took a photo of the scene (castle reflections in a pond) thinking maybe I'd give it another try when I got home (hate painting in public -- too insecure). When I looked at the photo it struck me that it looked nothing like what I "saw" with my naked eye. It was flat and uninspiring -- not to mention that the ripples with reflections were just not in the photograph. My friend is an oil painter and since I've got the supplies but not the confidence I decided to concentrate on that medium for awhile - as it is the only way to improve. Decided that I might as well use up those H2O oils as I don't care for them too much and won't be replacing them. First time ever setting up a still life ---- vegetables/fruits so far. Using canvas paper cut into 8x10 squares. Only have about 8 tubes so it's making me work harder at improving my color mixing skills. I am really amazed at how different it is to work from life!! I am loving it and actually producing some decent renditions. I love looking for colors that you aren't at first aware of (like my eggplant painting --- the light bouncing off the shiny skin and the pale purples and blues reflecting back). I am having a blast. Thank you for your tips and inspiration. Now I need to make me a black box too!
Mmm really like it, the loosened is so cool. Was the light cold or warm and did you build your shadows taking the light temperature?
your sense of humur makes the painting more fun! laugh and learn!
Great videos!, question do you use anything else beside turpentine when mixing colors? I mean something to make the oils paint more smoothly...
Hi Daniel. I’m setting up an art studio in a spare bedroom and want to have a wall to put ideas up on as well as my small paintings. Do yo like your picture rails or would you recommend a cork board or magnetic board?
nice demo. i know you don't know much about watercolor, but how do you think this technique translates or how would you modify it? thank you!
I have subscribed recently. Good elaborate vids. 👍
Thanks and welcome
@@paintcoach Thank you
You should make a video about sea scapes
huh. always wondered why my life paintings are always flat and boring. Thanks for the help
How do I sign up for the newsletter?
Once again an excellent session! I particularly like how you formed the grapes and the hydrangeas. Very helpful. Do you think that painting in oils made you paint looser, versus acrylics? I tried painting some flowers like that ( in Acrylics) it didn’t work out that well. Just boggled my mind.
I'm not sure. I have not painted with acrylics in a long time. I would imagine the fast dry time would make it difficult to move and manipulate the paint once it's on there.
Great timing, as many of us are about to do the 30 day Strada challenge :) My spraypainted protein box just isn't cutting it as a shadow box I'm afraid... 🤣
What’s a Strada Challenge?
You could get a 3 sided folding foam core backing that kids use for reports in school, they come in white or black I think. Then you can use colored paper in the back and change it out.
I have a question: could I use this course while using acrylics?
i just watched your video about Fat over Lean, but how come i don’t see you using solvent or medium in this tutorial? just wondering
Where can I find a coupon?
What is the song at 9:00 ?
Do you paint always with that light above your easle? My set up mean's I'm almost under the light, I have to sit, which I don't like when painting, and I have to wear a hat and hoodie to avoid headache's. Pain in the arse to be honest.
What's so weird is that my family used to have a centerpiece that looked exactly like that
Why u dont tone u canvas?
Oil?
So still life’s aren’t about realistic detail it’s about capturing the important highlights and depths from a photo then adding a little bit of detail to create the image
I can't believe someone wrote and sells a book about not wanting to paint.
When u put the black on the flowers it looked like a bird
10.30 Perdu....dans l'obscurité!!!!
Is that a painting of multiple Nick Cage faces?
Paint a thunderstorm!!!!!
That should be easy. In plein air I wouldn't even TRY IT! Have you seen thunderstorms with hail falling during sunset? they got all sorts of colors in there. That could be interesting.
blah blah blah get to it. talk about avoiding. lol. too much talk.
You talk too much.
