- The Clio 182 is great fun and offers exceptional value, but it’s far from perfect. In this video I run through some of the bugbears I’ve experienced with my car.

What annoys you most about the Clio 182?
It’s french,ergo, it’s rubbish
The creeks and rattles
Ive been working on it more than ive been driving it
Iv been scared of mine for 24yrs it's such a car that worries me constantly
@@BritishRacingGreens The leaks. It's like driving a colander. Currently trying to identify oil, power steering fluid, and coolant leaks. All barely noticeable as levels hardly drop, but definitely there because everything is wet. Luckily nothing is urgent but it is annoying.
Cambelt and dephaser is every 5 years!! Its the auxiliary belt that needs doing every 3. Fellow 182 RB owner here, loving the videos!😊
Thanks Gareth, appreciate it. Nice to know I have a little more time on the cambelt and dephaser than I thought. RB is the best colour 😉
Got me stressed then mine was done late 2016 and I had 5 years in my mind same as my Audi, but wasn’t sure otherwise it’s 2 years overdue🤣 reluctant to do it as the cars done 20k since last being done but for the sake of a few 100 quid it don’t hurt too.
😂 sorry to cause undue stress! Mine has been largely standing still for a few months now too, hopefully can get some proper use out of it later this year.
Mine has done like 10k in the 5 years since the last cambelt and dephaser but it's not the mileage that kills them it's the time. Age kills the rubber and that's why it's better to do it. Mines due this year so time to shell out the 700😭
If it makes you feel any better, £700 is only £140 a year for the next 5 years of spirited driving!
As below, cambelt is 5 years or 72k, aux belt system is every 3 or 36k. The aux belt is the killer too, the pulleys seize, belt jumps chews into the cambelt, lunching the engine. Subscribed too now, keep the content coming from another fellow RB owner
Just as I was feeling better about the cambelt and dephaser, you tell me the auxiliary belt is a time bomb too! 😂 appreciate it though, don’t want any Nast surprises. Appreciate the support from fellow RB owners 👊🏻
@@BritishRacingGreens the cambelt itself is not really a time bomb, I've seen cars go 10 years and 100k plus on original. 99% of the time when you hear the horror stories it's the aux belt that's dropped as the pulleys are exposed to the elements.
Sounds like my concern is ill-placed. When I can get back home to London I'll look through the paperwork to see when it was last done, may need to get it booked in. Thanks again, could be saving me a real headache!
@@BritishRacingGreens I'm in no way condoning ignoring a cambelt that's due though, if it's due, get the lot done. My high miler is booked in April for everything, major belt and fluids service and it soon mounts up but worth it for piece of mind, particularly when the cars a daily like mine. Had same job done to my phase 1 172 back end of last year so that's now perfect for next 3 years too. Lovely!
That’s exactly it, peace of mind, don’t need to be worrying about it. Cool that you’ve got a ph1 too, the gear shifter on those looks 👌🏻
Agreed with all of yours! A pet peeve of mine is the cold map and being rubbish until warm. The steering wheel and gearbox. The cheap interior is a bit of a meh subject, yes it is annoying now and then sometimes basic is good and sometimes you just want a little more creature comforts and less creaks. Other than that, I love mine!
I agree, on the whole a great package!
1. its to loud
2.on highway motor has nice power pull for the 5 gear but its like 3,500 rpm at 70mph
3.its very shaky and bouncy even with sock suspension
4.parts my be issue you need the know what parts you need example
say you need new front shocks you have like 3 option 52mm 54mm 60mm you need the do you own research
5.its still a Renault strange French issue are common
6. it doesn't like more then 2 occupants
7. sporty driver eats true tires at a alarming rate
8. like Car Diaries sad you will be associate with rice's but that can be also applied to type R owners ore other hardcore sport models
9.central locking has one Butten some time I forget its open or closed and on the face 2 it does not have a door lock pin or such so there is no way other then door handle check
some pros about the Clio RS 172/182
1.its cheap
I own one in the NL and here cars are taxed by weight only weighing 1010kg road tax is like 410 euro a year compared to a Peugeot 307 1200kg around 600 euro
2.its economical around 8l 100km (35mpg) if normally driven
3.its great daily easy to park due to small size modern equipment xenon central locking aircon climate control
electric windows etc.
4.huge forum support and fan club support
5. the surprise element/ sleeper only an true petrol head knows
6.easy to work it might look scary but its not to hard working on that engine
7.aftermarket parts the aftermarket on the Clio 172/182 are mostly all big brand stuff or quality stuff
8.its put a smile one your face in these crazy time that's all you need
9.its a purist car yes there are electronics but they kept it an minimal
hydraulic power steering for better feel
cable operate clutch
smaller brake booster for more pedal feel
sway bars bolted direct on the control arms
all to aid for an mechanical feel compare to modern sports cars that's more like an press the pedal an let the ecu sort of the rest
please excuse my English its not my first language
i own a fase 2 172
Interesting point on the tax, I didn't know that about NL. Very true about the forums too, lots of helpful people and lots of content there to support some of the common issues.
Totally agree on the turning circle. Good video. Looking forward to some new content!
Glad that my fellow 182 owners are in agreement on that one!
That was the most surprising thing for me, I'm sure my girlfriend's Mazda 6 has a smaller turning circle than this tiny hatchback
The heavy clutch 😫
I’m glad you think so too, quite a contrast to normal modern hatchbacks
I think 6 years is ok with timing belt
You should try the lumpy idle with a polybushed engine mount! I don't really see it as much of an issue though because of how little time I actually spend idling, plus I know that it's normal for the car. I'd probably end up turning it off if I was stuck in traffic though because it may be a little annoying after a while.
😂 I imagine that’s uncomfortable!
One thing to mention tho about the lumpy idle, a lot of people and or shop are messing up the cam timing when doing timing belt services, wich results in a bad idle situation, and too much ppl says its normal even tho it is not. Those car CAN sometimes have slight lumpy idle but its not that bad, so maybe check your engine timing. Cheers from France btw
Thanks for reaching out from France! As it turns out the engine did have issues, now back to full fitness.
I still love driving my 182 after 10 years, just having some electrical issues at the moment. I reckon it’s a UCH problem 😭
It’s a lot of fun. Every time you get in it it encourages some…spirited driving. Hope you get the electrical gremlins sorted soon 👌🏻
@@BritishRacingGreens Cheers bro. “Spirited driving” that’s one way of putting it. 😂👍
@@BritishRacingGreens So it turned out to be corrosion in the square plug which goes into the UCH and a faulty hazard light button. Got both things sorted, now we are happy. 👍👍
Great work, glad to hear it’s all sorted and wasn’t anything too serious.
@@BritishRacingGreens Cheers bro.
you will appreciate it more when it becomes a classic. =)
A modern classic?
@@BritishRacingGreens yes. but only if its been well looked after and not thrashed about.
These cars can rattle quite a bit which can be annoying in town driving.
Very true, the interior fixings aren't very robust, fair amount of panel rattle. My exhaust probably drowns a lot of it out, silver lining.
thats why I decided to completely strip mine :) no plastic, no back seats, no problem :) lol
@@lordlucan13 Yes problem Lol.....noise will be unbearable, for me anyway, if you run a Milltek exhaust like mine. It's loud enough just with rear seats down and parcel shelf off as I discovered on the motorway during a drive to the airport.
@@koolkat969 scorpion exhaust on mine... and I like it loud :D
@@lordlucan13 Fair enough 😉👍
Aup loving the 182 vids ! Sales pitch(I know terrible) I’m in Cheshire, I’ll be selling my 182 with upgraded seats as I bought a trophy . 1k for great condition oem recaros + bases/fuses to swap with your seats if you’re interested
Congrats on the Trophy purchase! I do love the Recaros, they look great - thanks for the offer but I can't really justify the cost. Good luck with the sale.
@@BritishRacingGreenscheers! no worries realised you were in Manchester so worth a punt
