How to exchange strap of a roller shutter without opening head box

- This Video will explain how to exchange the strap of a roller shutter without opening the head box! Which is extremely helpful if you can't get to the head box or if you don't want to ruin the wall paper or paint.

This video will explain you how to exchange the strap on a in wall mounted roller shutter, without even opening the mounting box.
The first step is to lower the roller shutter about half way to uninstall the stop pins. In order to be able to pull the shutter up inside the housing box.
Now that the stopping pins are undone, you tie a firm string to the very last slat of the roller shutter. The string should be at least 1.5-2 meters in length.
Now slowly pull the roller shutter up, because the stopping pins are taken off the shutter will keep rolling up into the housing box.
Make sure the string is pulled tight at all times while you pull up the roller shutter.
After 2 or 3 rotations, which you can easily count by the number of times the string wrapped around the outside of the shutter, you can carefully release the tension on the strap and the string. The shutter should stay in place now, balancing it self.
Now you fold the old strap in half close to the end sticking out of the wall. Then make a 1.5-2 cm long cut alongside the strap, then unfold the strap and cut it off about 2 cm below the alongside cut.
The new strap needs to be cut the same way as the old one. Therefore it also needs to be folded and cut longways about 2 cm.
Now put the new strap through the cut in the old strap.
Make sure now the new strap is not twisted anywhere. Then feed the bottom end of the new strap through the cut in the top of the new strap.
Once the new strap is pulled all the way through the cut, it will form a knot. This knot needs to be tightened now as much as possible, in order to fit through the strap feeder barring. For detailed instructions on how to knot the strap properly follow this link to one of my other videos!
Now the roller shutter needs to be pulled back out off the housing box. Therefore grab the string while holding the strap tightly to ensure it doesn't get twisted.
Then pull the string down, which automatically pulls the strap up through the strap feeder barring. If the knot doesn't fit on the first go, give it a controlled hard pull on the string to force it through.
Now lower the roller shutter all the way. To determine where the strap needs to be cut, simply measure 40 cm down from the bottom of the strap winder.
Then fold the very end of the strap and cut out a V shape.
Now feed the strap through the brake flap on the strap winder and attach it to the hook on the spring coil of the winder.
Then reinstall the strap winder and pull the shutter about half way up to re install the stopping pins and undo the string. For detailed instructions on how to exchange the strap winder follow this link to on of my other videos!
Once this is done, do a quick test run, make sure the strap is not twisted anywhere.

Yes, of course. If you let lose the roller without winding the strap on it, the spring will lose effect.
Hey Eric. There is a springload in the strap winder on the bottom. Not on the sutter axle. The shutter rolles down by gravity. Sometimes you need to put some extra steel or led sticksin the baserail to aid gravity, but🤫... trade secret...
have you any idea why the barrel axle comes out of the socket on left when the blind is brought up or down.? i put it back in but it comes out again
Hey Simon, sounds like one of the slats has shifted, the can slide horizontally and get stuck on the inlet in the head box itself, unless you can see it from below through the outlet, you will have to open the head box to inspect. Slats can be shifted back in place by hand. Shifting slats usually occurs when there is a one sided obstacle on the bottom, so the curtain sits uneven... or worst case if the axle is not rolling straight, then the roller barring or the axle adapter might need replacing...

Pully is being replaced by this, it is literally virgin where joined. Bearing usually needs replacement when it squeeks, maintenance free otherwise as ball bearings. Coiler can be replaced non the less but only needs when it does not pull in anymore as you can see in video you have to pull it out anyway, so no difference if you put same one back in or a new one mate.
And the shutter curtain can only be visually inspected anyway, porosion level of pvc can not be measured onlz guessed by vision / touch. On Alloy curtain no maintenance is required.
What ever you feel like, do not lube them in the tracks or the little pulley wheels that guide the strap. Only soils the parts over time, even with silica spray, electronstatic loading from running curtain up and down attracts dust and is disadvantageous.
Litterally unless something breaks or is visually unpleasant, no need to touch the units
