If you give the Sculptor sake (monkey boze) he tells you a history of when he was a shinobi, he and his friend shinobi went to the valley to practice, he says that they moved through the trees like the monkeys and his friend always whistled with that thing, the finger that you get from the Guardian Ape.
If you got the ring for the finger you can get the final form of that prosthetic arm, Malcontent, that produces the song that his friend used to make, a dark and sad song but beatiful at the same time.
It will be useful I think he said, and it was. During this fight if you use this arm the demon stops attacking, he gets hypnotized by the song and starts to cry...

The sculptor, having been close to becoming shura got his left arm cut off by isshin to stop the endless killing, but he kept finding new ways to kill with the shinobi prosthetic until he retired it after inventing the living force skill. After that he started sculpting the Buddha as a sort of karmic repayment, until he rescued you and gave you his prosthetic. After ashina got attacked he became a vessel for the spirits of hate. You can see his left arm has become another sort of prosthetic that he uses to destroy. When he was a shinobi in training he had a friend that owned that finger whistle before you, it sounded sad yet beautiful, and if you use it with the ring upgrade at his third phase he starts to cry. Imma be real witchu cheif, dat shit hurted.

One thing people didnt realize (and is also a great design) is that his left arm is primarily for range attacks and right hand for most melee attacks, this design fits how this boss looks: with a flaming, long left arm and a normal right arm. It is way easier to beat this boss when you run to his right side when in a distance (this way the fireballs and long-reaching moves can hit you at all); and rotate to his left side(your right) when you are in his face. With the right speed to rotate you will find that you wont need to deflect his attacks at all. Hope this helps you beating the boss.

The way it moves up in a serpentine manner before making that overhead slash is also accurate. Very good design of the boss.

Hey, I wrote this comment and I figured it out. After you trigger the first attack on Ashina, most likely after obtaining the lotus flower after defeating guardian ape, immediately return to dilapidated temple. Emma should be there talking to sculptor. Eavesdrop on them, talk to them, and then reload the area. Sculptor will now be alone (as Emma will assumedly travel to isshin). Speak to him and he tells you that you will be the one who needs to kill him.
This triggers mid battle dialogue between Sekiro and Demon of Hatred, and switches his answer to yes when asked by the old priestess I’f you know who the demon was before the change.
    This is worth it IMO.

Did this boss today in maybe 20 tries, here are my TIPS :
    - Use those 2 prosthetic tools (i'm french i don't know the exact english names) :
    - Lotus umbrella of Suzaku, the umbrella that blocks fire damages, it totally blocks almost all his attacks. Don't forget to hit him after you use the umbrella cause it does a double slash
    that deals good damages
    - The last upgrade for the finger prosthetic tool, the one that effects the spirits (you need to beat the shichimen warrior who is in the same spot than the Ashina Depths's Headless Ape
    after you defeat him)
    - Don't hesitate to hit him as much as possible, there are a lot of timings for it
    - To have the max use of the 2 prosthetic tools, use the ceremonial tanto you get after defeating the shichimen warrior in abandoned dungeon (use it at the beginning and between each phase
    if needed)
    - When he does the long fire shot that cover an immense line, jump and use grappling to get out of it
    - When he launches multiple fire balls, just keep running sideway while approaching him, you'll get a 4 or 5 hits window after that
    - When he jumps high in the air, stay in place and use the umbrella. After he hits the ground, wait 1 sec then hit him
    Good luck !

Things to note: the malcontent whistle can only be used three times before it's ineffective. I saved all three uses for his last phase, to do at least big chunk damage and shave off some of the danger in third phase.

And that feel to the monsters really helps make the hard turn into the more blatant mystical elements feel even more jarring and surreal.

If you overhear a conversation between Emma and sculptor before the owl ending I believe its when Emma sees the sculptor when he is affected by the dragonrot. he will give you an interesting piece of dialogue which is something on the lines of wolf you will be the one to kill me. this play out later in the boss fight where sekiro acknowledges this is actually the sculptor. very sad.

Did anyone notice the sword in its right arm? It was glowing like you could take it.

I'm having a good time with the game so far but I really dont like how insignificant the deflect system is on huge bosses like these

It makes it more realistic in my opinion. To be fair you got the mobility to balance it off and kite the boss as shown in the video.

thats not entirely true for this boss, if you perfectly repel the attacks that dont have fire on them, his posture goes up a good amount and he can be deathblow'd before his hp even hits 0

If you use the ring whistle "malcontent" it stuns the boss up to 3 times long enough to get some good hits in.

I like how this boss is very different from the other bosses in the game yet still can only be done in this game compared to other fromsoft titles.

Yeah never understood why people say it belongs more in Dark Souls/Bloodborne, it’s way too fast and covers way too much ground for those games’ combat.

If any of y’all still having trouble, keep in mind that the Malcontent whistle upgrade will stun him for a considerably long time. I recommend saving it for the third phase, where you can take off half his health bar with well-timed whistles before he even starts attacking.

I spent days trying to win this fight. I was angry by the time I won. But hearing the distorted raspy voice of the sculptor asking you to end him still gave me a sudden stinging feeling .
