    People, calm down. RTP said it in a Portuguese TV show so that people wouldn't start complaining they're wasting taxpayers' money. It's always like that here in Portugal. It will be a great show and RTP dreads the idea of not coming across as great organizers. Everyone's always proud of Expo 98 and Euro 2004, which were the best ever according to critics. The stakes are high. The arena is already there, so that's why there's potential to be "cheap".

      Of course they will... ESC is a TV show with a format... RTP will introduce some features in order to give it a unique Portuguese character but the fireworks will be there for sure, don’t worry...
      If we look back the stage of ESC 2010... it was quite simple but huge and beautiful... that from 2011 it was very different but amazing as well... of course it will be difficult to make us forget the staging of Moscow 2009...

    Malmo 2013 & Stockholm 2016 were the cheapest ESCs of this decade and are among the best years this century so Lisbon 2018 could be better than many think, just like Moscow 2009 & Baku 2012, 2 previous occasions a country first hosted Eurovision; the stages were massive and the winner became a big global hit 🤗 as long as it's not too cheap and there's still enough fun choreography, cool visuals, interesting tricks which is what makes Eurovision still a popular show globally, along with enough music variety from up tempo bangers to powerful ballads

  • @maxkunde9428
    @maxkunde9428 7 лет назад +3

    I think the reason for the early host city reveal is, that Portugal won once. They want to show the biggest city - Lisbon and not an more or less unknown city. Ukraine had win the contest in 2004, they could have shown another city to Europe. To show other sites of Ukraine.

    • @TheGrindelwald
      @TheGrindelwald 6 лет назад +1

      In Sweden, we'we changed city for economic reasons also. The city of Malmö put out a lot of money for their ESC, so they wanted other cities like Gothenburg or Stockholm to host the competition. Yes, Eurovision helps the companies and the region to gain money, but the govern of the city does not gain everything they put out.

      Yeah, I can confirm that prices in Sunny Beach are nearly tripled than the average prices in Bulgaria. A beer of 500ml costs €0.50 - €0.60 while in Sunny Beach you might get charged €1.50 - €3. Next year will not be as expensive as Sweden or Denmark, that's for sure :)

    • @ruichorao
      @ruichorao 7 лет назад

      No, don't think so. And Lisbon is a bit more expensive than other Portuguese cities or places. Cheap for most Europeans, but no so cheap, namely the capital and during such an important event. One can find bargians, but there are a lot of rather expensive places (compared to Easter countries, but really cheaper than most Western ones). A beer can cost from 1 to 4 euros, depending on where you go.

    About the countries participating, I really hope Russia will compete in Lisbon, I was a little disappointed when they didn't compete this year.
    If Russia do come back next year, do you think they will send Julia Samoylova like they were going to do previously? I think I read somewhere that she'd be representing Russia in Lisbon, but I'm not entirely sure...

    • @Wiwibloggs
      @Wiwibloggs  7 лет назад +1

      Jack Rippon Shortly after Eurovision her 2018 participation was seemingly reconfirmed on a Russian TV show. (I wrote about that in the very final paragraphs here: www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/7824750/eurovision-propaganda-war-feature). But since then there has been silence, so it’s unclear

    • @TheGrindelwald
      @TheGrindelwald 6 лет назад

      Thank you for telling me. I think maybe Portugal has been in the shadow of Spain for me. So I don't know that much about the country. Other than Fado, some famous football player (I'm not interested in sports, so I don't wanna say the wrong name), there is a special sea life with a Portuguese octopus, Portuguese jellyfish, and I know about a lot of forrest fires reported last summer (I have myself been involved in a forrest fire, so I know the panic). Also there is Portuguese imperialism that has spread the languages to places like Brazil that brought us the song Au sei no puego.
      Cool with the many islands. Is Lisbon on the biggest island?

      Seems like you skipped geography lessions......

    • @TheGrindelwald
      @TheGrindelwald 6 лет назад

      Vassilios Vassiliadis Actually, I did well in geography. I learned to recognise most of wolds flags in an early age and scored well on capital tests and others. Except for that, Portugal was only present when discussing colonialism and the wold wars etc. And for example the news report about different conflicts in the wold and also cover large European economies (in ESC "the big five") and the US.
      So when I say I don't know that much it's like not entirely true. For example I have searched for music from Portugal since they won ESC.
      A favourite of mine is Pica Do 7 with António Zamburjo. My say is only i wish I knew more. And I hope Eurovision will help me understand more about the country and its archipelagos

    • @TheGrindelwald
      @TheGrindelwald 6 лет назад

      br3menPT colonialism is more or less the concept where the act of colonisation is considered a good thing. The subject discussed was colonialism, different mindsets about being superior, how colonialist describes other people, consequences of acting out those ideas etc.

    Love the efficiency of RTP but I hope the whole waves theme doesn't lead to them glorifying colonisation, especially with the treatment of Indigenous tribes in their most famous colony (Brazil- granted by the current Brazilian government rather than the Portuguese empire at this point, but still, colonisation was an ugly part of history and Eurovision should be a platform for inclusivity and not inequality.

      Wait, what? How did you come to that conclusion... Portugal glorifies the waves because the sea is an integral part of the nation. It's not just something it can be ignored. It's part of its identity-- regardless of colonization.

    • @PCBarrinha
      @PCBarrinha 7 лет назад +6

      Compare the Portuguese colonization with that of the other countries.
      Portugal in Brazil discovered the Indians who were still from the time of the Neolithic. Neither the fire knew much less agriculture or animal breeding.
      there were other Indians that even cannibals were.
      and taught a religion and a language.
      Very different from the Spanish of those who killed these civilizations like the Mayas or the Aztecs.
      England France and the Holandese were these yes the biggest assassins killed to steal. They conquered colonies and killed a lot. But that's good to tell stories of the Pirates of the Caribbean and Jack Sparrow.
      The story does not go away but many tell lies of what happened.

    The only time it was cheap and good as a show was Stockholm2016 but Portugal are not as good as Sweden. Melodifestivalen vs. Festival da Cancao😄you cant compare

      Most NFs outside Scandinavia don't have great production values. The budget allocation for ESC, a one off event for most broadcasters (except SVT lol) is going to be much greater than a regular NF that a broadcaster has to host annually.

    • @ruiduarte6620

      vjollila96 we just cannot spent millions and more millions just because we think expensive is better... otherwise how it would be if Macedonia 🇲🇰, Albania 🇦🇱, Armenia 🇦🇲 for example won the contest?!
      If the winner has to organize the following show it has to be according to their economic possibilities... otherwise only could participate rich countries in order to spend millions and millions...
      the thing is since Russia 🇷🇺 2009 we had assisted to a show off of technology and pyrotechnics instead of music... I think it’s not bad... but a bit too much... we almost see a videoclip competition instead of live performances... coming to a state where even the back singers don’t appears on stage... sometimes great songs loose all their impact due to all the overwhelming staging which distract the viewers from the essential: the song... it’s like if we were in a great disco... more loud more frenetic is better... sometimes we must just give a break in order to absorve the music and performance... I think next step in Eurovision is simplify it and show that everyone can win and organize the show as well...
      Portugal has not the economy of Germany 🇩🇪 or Russia 🇷🇺... so we will do it our way... and I’m quite confident that will be a really enjoyable and good show for everyone... I understand that cannot be everyone’s cup of tea... but there are more than 200 millions of potential viewers... so I think it will pleases to most of them.

    portugal is cheap if you don't live here. don't forget that we have the lowest minimum and average salary of all western europe. lower than greece or spain. our minimum wage is 557 euros... and most people working in tourism fields in lisbon earn around 650.

    • @somekindofaperson
      @somekindofaperson 7 лет назад

      br3menPT First, portuguese minimum salary is lower than the greek one. Go and check yourself. Second: greece might not be western europe, right, but still we are the country with the lowest minimum wage there. And yes, comparing Portugal to greece makes sense: economically is the country closest to us. And we have a bunch of things in common actually, culturally for example. Anyway, you cant say Portugal is cheap. When people are foreigners they should put themselves in the local shoes. But Lisbon now a days is expensive as hell. Comparing to London? No. But again lowest salary in western europe, and lower than greece. Happy now?

    • @somekindofaperson

      br3menPT minimum wage in Portugal is 557 euros. Please check your facts before saying crap.

    • @somekindofaperson
      @somekindofaperson 7 лет назад

      br3menPT vs 14? The mininum wage is 557 euros. I know. I took less than that home. So i know what Im saying. Christmas or summer money(If you earn it) is an extra. Its wrong to think of that as part of a salary. If you count with that, the greek one is still more. God, This is like telling you the board is white when its white. If you think Portugal is cheap, good for you. you belong to the 5% of richest people in here. And the country i know closer to us in everything is greece. Even more than spain.

      Artigo 2.º
      Valor da retribuição mínima mensal garantida
      O valor da retribuição mínima mensal garantida a que se refere o n.º 1 do artigo 273.º do Código do Trabalho, aprovado pela Lei n.º 7/2009, de 12 de fevereiro, é de (euro) 557.
      www.aenfermagemeasleis.pt/2016/12/30/atualizacao-do-valor-do-salario-minimo-nacional-para-2017/
      this is how you count the minimum wage. not with the subsidies. no one i know thinks of their salaries like that. and i also see posters from left parties saying they want the minimum wage to be 600 euros. anyway, i'm not gonna have a flame war because of this lol.
      but i don't understand why you bring slovakia or czech republic. if you brought like spain, ok i would understand (and i would argue). but two countries that are like 20 years old, with a very different past than ours, very different food, different people (i met czechs and slovaks), more conservative mentalities in general... i would say spain, italy and greece are the countries which we have most in common. from those three, by my experience, i think we are the closest with the greeks. in terms of economical crisis yes, but sense of humor, social posture, national identity, etc. italy is a collection of cities, and spain a cultural mix with one dominant population. and they take themselves more seriously than us or the greek people i met(even though they are prouder than us).

      They are everything on schedule... they are trying to the budget to the reality of the country... nobody said that the quality of the show would be be affected... after all there’s a model to follow... its RTP who produces but it’s EBU who gives and supervises the format... Stockholm 2016 was better than Kyiv 2017 and was cheaper... so....
