I love how this film completely glosses over the fact culture seems to have died since there are no references to any media beyond the mid-2010s. Or the fact that if everyone spends all their time in a VR game that would 100% lead to complete societal degradation
The book explains that 1980s culture is more dominant because that is what Halliday, the creator of the Oasis was obsessed with, since that was when he was a kid. So people took an interest in the older decades because they thought it would help them win or figure out clues. Plus since everyone is obsessed with the Oasis not much "new" culture is being created especially because of overpopulation, famine, etc.

Like everything becomes liquidated to a coin count, so artifact and weapons would probably respawn where you would find them or have to be bought from the store
Just make alt accounts or have a friend act like a bank. Give all items to the alt and keep grinding. Gamers would always find a way to keep their items and abuse the mechanics
I used to think this was cool, but I really thought deep on this. If I live to see, or hear, about this becoming reality, to this degree, I pity those who don't understand what it's like riding horses or elephants in reality. Or the simple pleasure of burying one's toes in warm sand or tropical water.
Very screwed that you lose ALL your Items that have taken you years to craft just because you died in a game. If I lost my armor and weapons in Monster Hunter just because a monster killed me, I would uninstall the game and go for another game.
I think the reasonable issue is that the Oasis is more like a console/device with the large amount of various content… Can you literally imagine a game that include every character in any media and basically do anything in the virtual world… What possible other “game” can you realistically play…especially knowing that if you play the game, you have a lottery chance of winning BILLIONS!!!

I think people only get the coins
Cause it the movie people die, you never see people claiming their gear only coins
Like everything becomes liquidated to a coin count, so artifact and weapons would probably respawn where you would find them or have to be bought from the store
You lose everything if you die in this game? Haven't they heard of storage boxes, banks and or item keepers?
Might be that the virtual reality that the creator designed was that you can't keep what you have on you when you game over.
Man, I would definitely not have that in my game, trust me people be crazy for the loot
In real life there would be so many in game serial killers who would just go on mass killings for no other reason other than trolling.
