The Shockingly WEIRD Way Kenan & Kel Ended

  • Kenan & Kel was the original Drake & Josh, and for how much I could go on about my enjoyment of the show itself, today I wanted to focus on the shockingly weird way the series of Kenan & Kel ended, with the TV movie titled Kenan & Kel: Two Heads Are Better Than None.

Favourite episode was when Kenan and Kel entered a couples game show to win some cash… and the last question posed to Kenan, “what is Kel’s favourite drink?”…
Kenan exclaims “orange soda!”, thinking he’s won the game show and celebrating… only for Kel to reveal its root beer…
As a kid, this killed me…
Thanks for this awesome nostalgia trip!

Man, this episode is basically we are cancelled anyway, lets go nuts as the finale...
On a side note, I always found it unique that despite Kenan being the straight man, it was Kel who was more sensiable and would try to talk him out of things in the beginning of every episode. Despite Kenan being the more normal one, Kel was the more reasonable one. That's pretty rare as a sitcom duo set up. Awww, here it goes!

It wasn't really cancelled. Nickelodeon just had a rule that they wanted about 65 episodes for every show back in those days, as they figured that this was the perfect amount for syndication. I think that the Rugrats were the first show to really break that rule as it was brought back by popular demand after they had planned on ending it as well. Then it wasn't until Spongebob that they had a show that was just kept on continuously... also due to popular demand.

Kel was so excited about it waiting outside the studio waiting to get in, until a security guard was so annoyed by Kel’s excitement he just took their tickets to the show and tore them up.

I've been telling people about this movie for years, but nobody else seems to remember it, even though the terror it instilled in me has been permanently etched into my brain. It truly feels like a real life creepypasta. Most of the sillier scenes I had forgotten, but what really stuck with me were the maid without any eyelids, the dinner scene where it is implied they're being fed human flesh, and of course, the severed heads in the dungeon. I was a huge Kenyan and Kel fan as a kid, so tor the series to end on such an uncharacteristically dark note was a real shock to me. I didn't know it was the ending, though. I remember talking about this show on a date and she said, "It took a lot of inspiration from the Chapelle Show." I was confused and told her that the Chapelle Show came out years after and then she called it "Keen and Pel." I asked her if she meant, "Key and Peele," and she did. So, thoughts:
Firstly and most importantly, I'm so glad you uploaded this. As someone who enjoyed Kenan and Kel as a young boy back in the day, I'm so glad to see someone talking about this TV special/movie/finale thing. It almost feels like a fever dream, considering I remember certain scenes and bits of dialogue (such as Kel telling Kenan "nighty night night" in the motel scene) so well and yet you will hardly ever see it show up again, even when Teen Nick actually decides to air Kenan and Kel for a while. So of course, this made me happy. Thanks, Jordan!
Secondly, I assume that despite how awesome it is, the most likely reason it won't air on TV again is because of that chimp playing Superstition on piano. Considering the "Rugrats go on vacation" special won't be airing again because of copyright issues involving a song Angelica sings, I'm going to assume the same issue plagues Two Heads are Better Than None, but because of Superstition instead. Guessing Nickelodeon either can't or won't bother renewing their copyright legal mumbo jumbo in order to air this one Kenan and Kel special/movie/etc.
And finally... 11:30 Updated, vaguely anime-ish(?) Jordan, meet classic Regular Show-ish(?) Jordan! ...That just amused me, sorry for wasting everyone's time. I'll see myself out. Thanks for reading.

The monsters/ghosts were still a threat and not a joke even though the comedians still did their humor shtick around them. Too many horror comedies shy away from the "scary" parts.

This video unlocked unsettling memories I didn't know I had. I remember being way too small and flipping through channels when I saw that woman being sent away from the table, screaming as she was pulled into the wall, and then seeing her lifeless head just sitting on the table. Even with the jokes, I couldn't sleep forever.

Would love to see a kenan and kel continuation with Kenan being a father and Kel dropping by as the fun uncle. Kenan is trying to get over his ex while Kel does everything in his power to help Kenan get over his ex. Pretty much what they are doing with iCarly but mixed with full house.

I *loved* Kenan & Kel as a kid. Good Burger is a classic. That said, I remember being super upset Kel wasn’t included on SNL when Kenan debuted. I later found out that Lorne Michaels REFUSED to hire them both. He would only take one. What an absolute fool. He literally had an already made tried and successful brand worth millions handed to him! He had nothing to lose to try it out. I would like to know what his reasoning was. He also picked Kenan who always played more of a straight man in everything while Kel was actually better at improv. Kenan’s skits on All That, like the one with him sitting it a bath tub in a raincoat while using a mocking French accent, got on my nerves or were just stupid but Kel’s was way more of a quick thinking & physical comedian.

Just stumbled on this channel and I'm *more* than pleased. Kenan & Kel was an excellent show that was fun - it had genuine societal and cultural impact. While the main cast was black, the audience was diverse (and more importantly in their developmental stages) also -unlike many shows of the era with B/POC title characters(with the exception of the one-off for a "special episode" to illustrate prejudice ect), it didn't exist in a racial vacuum and the supporting cast was more diverse than most.
Yes, it was silly and left loose ends in moments, but it was significantly more progressive and ahead of it's time than we could have ever realized.
Ironically, it's the type of program that we are advocating for today and it was done nearly 30 years ago.

FINALLY a good Kenan and Kel video! This was my absolute favourite show! Very few shows would make me laugh OUT LOUD as a kid, the way K&K did. Don’t get me wrong - other shows were fun to watch, but not necessarily *funny*. Disney “comedies” included. I remember laughing till I cried and almost peeing my pants with the lottery episode when they fall off the window. The one when they’re locked in the freezer never fails to make me smile. And of course, the one with the screw in the tuna. Oh, humanity! I could go on and on. Absolute best Nickelodeon show.

The way the movie originally appeared on TV was with the opening. I remember back in the day after Nickelodeon premiered a movie they use to switch stuff like that around every once in a while. I’m not 100% sure why, but I think it had something to do with fitting into a specific time frame or allowing more commercials to be played during the movie. But it did originally open with Kenan and Kel facing a blank audience. I believe I have it recorded on VHS somewhere.

Kel would often do things that truly shocked me even though I knew well that the show was meant to be ridiculous. I remember the innocent pizza boy walking through the door to deliver a pizza, only to be brutally knocked unconscious when Kel breaks what looked like a very heavy vase over the kid's head! Kel hit him because he was afraid that he thought the person coming through the door was a serial killer who was on the loose. But it was Kel who ordered the pizza... and the kid ANNOUNCED himself before he walked through the opened door! He did the same thing with a police officer. Keenan walks into the kitchen to find Kel standing over a cop that he had just knocked unconscious.
KEL: i couldn't help it... he scared me by what he said before he came in!
    KENAN: What did he say??
KEL: He said, "It's the police, I'm coming in."

This will forever be one of my favorite shows. I remember getting so excited whenever a new episode would air. Kenan & Kel really meant a lot to me growing up and I thought the movie was great. I think one of my favorite episodes was Season 2's "Get the Kell Outta Here" (pretty risque title for a kid's show) where Roger finally gets fed up with Kel's antics and bans him from the house after Kel injures him pretty severely. I love how hard Kel tried to make things better, but we all know that the more Kel tries to help... the worse he makes it.
The Bye-Bye Kenan finale special always really tugged at my heartstrings too, touching on some deep concepts for kids like moving away, losing friends, changing schools etc.

Around 2010-11, I became absolutely obsessed with everything from the 90s, with Nickelodeon being the primary thing. 90s Nick practically defined my tween years, and I have shows like Kenan & Kel to thank for that.
