One of the greatest films ever made! Antagonist vs Antagonist. The oil man representing human greed & pride to gain power of an Empire. The Preacher representing self righteousness & divine worship all to feed a false prophets ego. These vices of each are what built America and here we see them clash. Power over resource meets power over the people. All tuned with a masterful musical score. Is one vice worse than the other? Are they equal? Who knows. Even when Daniel sees the mountain that hides its oil beneath we hear an eerie music almost as if the oil is a villain itself. A masterpiece.

I do think Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor of modern times. The thing is, after seeing everything he's been in, I still have absolutely no idea what sort of person he might be. Other actors, you at least feel that you're getting some glimpse into their essential being, even if you're wrong. But with Day-Lewis he just puts up this impenetrable wall, that makes his characters amazingly believable and the man himself utterly unknowable.

I watch everything from action to some foreign movies to horror (and even some b horror like bloody birthday), black and white films, the latest big action movie all the way to little known dramas, I just love anything and everything movies. Here are my favorite ten films out of the couple hundred I've watched. They will be roughly in order but I could spend all day arranging and re-arranging my list because I'm so ocd lol. Anyway . . .-Gattaca-The Curse of the Golden Flower-Dangerous Liaisons (1988 one)-Atonement-Let the right one in-Last Picture Show-The Hills Have eyes (2006 version. My god am I obsessed with the beginning song More and More by Webb Pierce)-K.I.D.S. (one of my all time favorite films)-Eyes Wide Shut (just barely edges out a clockwork orange as my favorite Kubrick film. I haven't seen Barry Lyndon or Lolita or Spartacus yet though).-Oh Brother Where Art Thou (just barely ahead of No Country as my fav Coen bros. film lol)-Frozen River (extremely underappreciated film imo.I'll stop now because I could easily go on and on about movies (and books) lol. But just to throw it out there I don't watch a ton of westerns but I'm starting to get into them a bit more, but Lonesome Dove and Rio Bravo are both excellent.

cant believe none of you have No Country For Old Men or THIS movie on your lists lol looking at most of your lists it would seem you actually enjoy the art of movie-making, which is something a lot of people don't pay attention to. you can see the brilliant "artwork" like O' Brother, Where Art Thou(like +kevdawg55 said) or No Country For Old Men by the Coen Brothers, or "artwork" like The Shining(except for the shitty female actress) or A Clockwork Orange, or Paul Thomas Anderson films like this, shot in 35mm for the beauty(The Master also). seems like most directors nowadays go for mainly blood and as much action as they cn stick in a 2-hour slot. its nice to see movies made artfully for a change. and this movie is a great example, its still called one of the most important American films of the 21st century for not only it's great acting and cinematography, but gives us an idea of a Rockefeller or a Carnegie at the turn of the century.

Probably because it's hard being in the shadow of Daniel, and Daniel casts a very large shadow. Lewis is one of a kind, and arguably the greatest actor alive today. That's not even subjective at this point.
There's maybe a couple actors who can even hold a candle to Lewis's incredible acting, like heath ledger with the joker. You need not look far for proof of any of this, by simply looking up analysis and breakdown videos on their performances on youtube.
This isn't about liking someone or having favorite actors either. This is objective truths about these actors that make them uncommon amongst uncommon people. from all the improvisations in their work, to the minor details and mannerisms they display. The average person might take what their seeing for granted and not realize it, but these are masterclass works of art from people, and we may not see another of their kind again for another 50-100 years. So.... yeah. Consider that for a second.

DeadMoNeyProductions BP He's been wanting to kill him the entire movie since Eli was an actual threat when it came to competing for power over the people. Eli was so much more powerful than him that he had Daniel kneeling before him and slapping him around in his church in front of everyone and Daniel had to take it. But by the end of the movie Daniel was not only literally drunk but he was drunk with power, he had all the money and success he'd been working for, so when his life-long competitor comes in desperate and begging for help Daniel had the chance to get rid of him since he was finally powerful and rich enough to make it happen and get away with it since Eli clearly didn't have a strong following anymore. Plus Daniel had just disowned his "son" which was the only person he had a chance at a real human connection with during his life (you can see Daniel's "closest associates" disappear out of his life with no mention like they were nothing to him the whole movie) So he didn't have much to lose anymore by giving in to his evil side. That's my very long interpretation of why he killed him.
