Our First Heavy SnowFall in S.Ontario, Canada work cancelled due to COVID. Headphones on...watching it snow and forgetting about all the COVID doom & gloom. Added this to my Christmas Playlist last Year. Glad I brought it out today! Much needed! 🎄🔔🎅🏽

The link to this wonderful upload was sent to me by my beloved son from Durham where he is studying for his MA. He knows that I am an organ geek which is my own description for myself as someone who probably belongs back in baroque times living in some glorious city in Germany or The Netherlands and able to listen to Bach or Buxtehude playing in the flesh. So, although I am an aficionado of what I call "hardcore" organ music - Bach, Buxtehude and Bruhns und so weiter, the carols in this "Order of Service" are sublime and I can feel the tears (of joy) welling up in my eyes. This is the great Christian tradition in which I was brought up especially at my grammar school and I thank God for it and for the love of music which it has given me. When I hear these carols so many good things come flooding back: my happy childhood, the same for my two lovely, outstanding sons and the spirit and goodwill of Christmas and what it really means away from the ghastly shopping malls. I know it's not PC but we need more of all this in the world to solve its problems. I'm not even a regular church goer but I know how benign and benevolent the good old C of E and other Christian denominations are these days. We no longer chop off people's heads because they disagree with us nor do the men I know abuse innocent women and children or destroy beautiful things. Sorry about my diatribe but that's how powerful music can be. It's heartening to read so many appreciative comments below. It just underlines my fundamental belief that there's still great hope for mankind and that goodness will always triumph in the end. Merry Christmas to you all! Jonathan Smith

JonathAN Smith Thanks for your comments and it's humbling that your son sent you the link. When I uploaded this a few years ago, I was in a way recreating my memories of Christmas before I realised what a cruel world it is. I agree there should be more of this. I'm also not a regular church goer and I'm torn because I like pipe organs.

Wow! Thank you for your message. The organ is not referred to as a digital organ. It is a virtual organ. All the pipes in the real organ are sampled many times and these days from different parts of the church or Cathedral. The Hauptwerk program replays each pipe but also replicates the wind pressure differences and the effect on tuning and tone that has. Digital organs, at least till quite recently, tend to sample some of the pipes and fill in the gaps and dont replicate the wind. Hauptwerk is as near as you can get to the real thing. I really need to upload something fresh, that upload was years ago before I could play. Thanks again!

…..so there I was casually minding my own business one evening recently and nonchalantly finishing our Christmas cards, when I suddenly thought to myself, let’s see what's 'out there' on-line in the way of Carol music to help put me in the festive mood.....which is how I accidentally encountered your astonishing ‘Motherload’ !!!
I mean to say, at 1hr 33m 45s long, that’s QUITE some feat of endurance, but what's really rather special is that it's lovely to listen to all of these ‘old warhorses’ being 'put through their paces' on Salisbury Cathedral’s magnificent Father Willis ‘sound-set’ via Hauptwerk’s astounding software.
Your marvellous ‘registrational’ skills (if that’s a new word which I just 'coined', then I'm patenting the 'licensing rights' worldwide this very second !) make me green with envy ! I still find it quite difficult to comprehend that you'd not practised certain of these Carols at all beforehand, because otherwise you must truly possess phenomenal sight-reading abilities !
Nowadays it's become more-or-less the 'norm' for choirs to sing carols & hymns accompanied on the pipe organ, but it's genuinely refreshing to hear this solo instrument taking centre stage for a change !
As mischievous choristers, my partners in crime often used to have great fun at times by regularly teasing the choirmaster and pulling stunts whilst rehearsing, such as below:
    *
While shepherds washed their socks by night,
    All seated round the tub,
The angel of the Lord came down,
    And they began to scrub…etc
*There is of course lot’s more where that came from, but I’m afraid it’s FAR too rude to print the remainder !
    And latterly:
While shepherds watched the box at night
    All tuned to ITV
The angel of the Lord came down
    And changed to BBC.
Then changing tack, there’s this classic:
We three kings of Orient are
One in a taxi, one in a car
One on a scooter, tooting his hooter
    Following yonder star
    *Ditto as above !
    Or:
We four Beatles of Liverpool are,
Paul in a taxi, John in a car,
George on a scooter, beeping his hooter,
    Following Ringo Star.
    And cheekily also:
We three kings of Leicester Square
    Selling ladies underwear
    So fantastic, no elastic
    Only tuppence a pair
    And finally, for good measure:
We three kings of orient are
One in a taxi, one in a car
One on a scooter parping his hooter
    Following yonder star
Oh star of wonder, star of night
Sit on a pack of dynamite
Light the fuse and off we go
    On our way to Mexico
Anyhow, getting back to the serious stuff for a moment, there are so many 'gems' to choose from on your lengthy list, it's particularly difficult to know precisely where to start !
O.K., let's kick-off with the wonderfully evocative rendition of:
    2. Of The Father's Love Begotten. (Corde Natus).
One of my all time top favourites, so simple yet so delightful, but not performed as often as I’d like !
    18. O Come All Ye Faithful. (Adeste Fideles).
Blimey, you certainly ‘went to town’ on the last few verses, that’s powerful stuff, my man ! Thrusters switched to Overdrive ! Helm, warp one - Engage !
    19. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear. (Noel).
Glorious registration all the way through and splendid last three verses. Superb piece, yet again unfairly neglected. Pourquoi ? What was the reed stop used to introduce the first few bars ?….."I like it, I like it" (Corporal Jones in Dad’s Army !)
    Next-up are these two:
    21. A Babe Lies In The Cradle. (Corner).
I don't know why I've never heard this one before & especially love the harmonization of the concluding verse. Btw, is that you ‘improvising’, or what’s written on the actual score ?
    23. Hark The Herald Angels Sing. (Mendelssohn).
This is one of my all-time favourites, but hey that's no surprise 'cos it was composed by Felix Bartholdy - 'nuff said. That 'fella' sure knew how to write great harmonies and it's chastening to hypothesize that had it not been for Felix reviving interest in the great maestro's music throughout Germany, the world might never have experienced any of J. S. Bach's extraordinary music - an incredible thought, but apparently largely true ! We are forever in your debt, F.B.M.
    ....and finally:
    27. Christian's Awake. (Yorkshire).
A stirring song, but I’d not realised it was a Christmas hymn ! I detect loads of low-down 32’ 'welly' there and no mistake ! Fire booster rockets and then standby to engage subsonic afterburners. Full speed ahead Captain and give it plenty of extra va-va-voom !!!
Reminiscing a little, many moons ago as a kid growing up back in the mid 1960's, I’d steadfastly tune in to the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols which was broadcast live from King’s College Cambridge on Radio 4 at 3.00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, conducted by the inimitable David Willcocks. Alas he finally passed away this September aged 95 and will be sorely missed by all those who knew him well.
As you may know, many of his beautiful descants and carol arrangements were published in the famous series of books ‘Carols for Choirs,’ that he wrote specifically for the service of Nine Lessons and Carols, edited in collaboration with Reginald Jacques and John Rutter. These books eventually became the ‘de facto’ standard for all half-decent choirs to aspire to.
Interestingly what most people don’t actually even realise is that the original Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was in fact devised in 1880 by the first Bishop of Truro called Edward White Benson. The Nine Lessons with Carols service was an immediate success and quickly travelled beyond Cornwall.
    www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/nov/29/truro-nine-lessons-carols-christmas-history
However, it was Cambridge's King's College, with its celebrated choir, that really put it on the map. Eric Milner-White, dean of King's, took up the service in 1918 with a few changes.
    kind regards & season’s greetings
    Richard
P.S. Incidentally, I'd very much like to know if you were using the FULL 'sound-set' of Salisbury's samples (as opposed to smaller sets ?), but there's absolutely no need to reply to all these questions ‘till well after the New Year celebrations have subsided !

What a lovely sound. You play beautifully. It's like entering the Cathedral on Christmas Eve! I'm so pleased to have found your channel. The whole 'recital' deserves praise - and how sad to see three not liking the Carols. Traditional Carols - they seem to bring some hope, but there we are inasmuch as none can please folk all of the time! I am 17 years of age and studying music for organ - your channel has brought much inspiration and I thank you that. Blessings and a very Happy Christmas. From Daniel in Sutton, Surrey, UK.

+Dafydd Jones Thank you Daniel or is it Dafydd? I like to think that people who click dislike actually meant to click like but slipped. I hope you enjoy your organ music studies, I love playing but I have more or less self taught after having a few lessons for the pedals. I am currently building a new 4 manual console which is occupying my spare time but I can still twiddle on my current Hauptwerk setup for therapy :-)

    • @dafyddjones1525
      @dafyddjones1525 9 лет назад

+goodchappy Thanks for your reply. Dafydd - he's my dad and I use his computer! What a task you have undertaken in building the 4 manual console - will you be playing it for all who enjoy your music on RUclips? I get the chance of learning the pedals and stops at our local church when no services are taking place. The church organist is very kind. The make of the organ is Viscount and it's a 2 manual. Learning is hard work, but hopefully I'll succeed. All the stops are at the front. I'm getting to 'hit' the bass pedals reasonably well! My mum really liked listening to the Carols yesterday evening - and some of her friends as well - they had a great time singing. Dad also said that you are a very accomplished player and how brilliant that you learned mostly on your own. Thanks again for replying - not many organists do!! All good wishes. Daniel. p.s mum plays the harp. Dad sings baritone. We love music rather than rugby! He asked if you have played in a Cathedral because the organ you play sounds like the one in St. Paul's, London.

    • @Goodchappy
      @Goodchappy  9 лет назад

Hi Daniel, it sounds like you come from a well balanced family :-) I nearly bought a Viscount organ about 25 years ago but then they didn't really sound very good in my opinion. Hauptwerk is as near as you can get to recreating the real sound. I am hoping to record and upload some more using the default organ that Hauptwerk comes with, as I have voiced it to sound more real, it actually starts running out of "wind" if you play a lot of notes which is what some real organs do.
I do not play in a Cathedral, the nearest I have come to that was playing on the organ in St. Albans Cathedral which is slightly larger than the one in Salisbury and is used for the International Organ festival every 2 years. Many of the organists that end up at St. Paul's in London have come from St. Albans.
I am assuming you live in Wales?
Thanks for your kind comments, it is nice to know what people think. Peter

Hello Peter, Thanks for your most interesting reply - I haven't been to St. Alban's Cathedral, but my brother and I will probably make the effort. We moved from Wales about five years ago - we moved to Sutton (Surrey.) My dad transferred to London (work promotion.) We often visit relations in Wales (Porthcawl and Swansea.) I miss my friends there especially a school pal who encouraged me to learn music. All the best. Daniel.

You interpretations of these beloved carols are just what the church needs. How magnificent and noble your playing is no matter the mistakes. I think your playing would be perfect for a Christmas Eve mass!!! :) The heroic antiphonal themes recited by the Elegant and commanding Willis Tubas 8'&4' are perfect. And the richness of the 32's providing the feeling and reinforcement of Nobility that only the pipe organ can offer. One word Stellar!!! And even though I'd rather have physical pipes rather than an ADC organ I must say that Hauptwerk is the closest thing to the real pipe organ!!

    • @Goodchappy
      @Goodchappy  2 года назад +2

I agree and I doubt anyone who has Hauptwerk would or should think it is better than the real thing. However, because you can add things that are not possible on the real organ for example octave couplers and registration aids, in that way, you could say it is better than the real thing. :-)

I wrote my Christmas message, listening to your music. Holiday message to all my friends near and far…
Christmas is a Christian Festival celebrating the birth of the Christ Jesus, who brought unconditional loving to humanity - the first to do so in human history.
In Asia, they celebrate Spring Festival, with the coming of a New Year.
In practically every culture of the world, whether in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, there is some celebration when rebirth is sensed, with the Solstices. This whether it be winter to summer, or vice versa, change, opposites attacting, creating the great cycle of life.
This year we must be especially aware of the precipitous nature of life on Mother Earth. We can´t assume the human species will continue forever! We´ve been profligate, and are essentially consuming ourselves in the process.
So, this season of Light and Love, I ask everyone to be more aware of how he or she is affecting our nest, our home, our mother, our earth, this place of life, the third rock from the sun! We can´t keep trashing it out at the rate we´ve been, or we´re not going to survive!
Politically speaking things have never been more divisive in the world! So I ask all those who KNOW THEY ARE RIGHT, to turn the other cheek, and try to understand what we HAVE ALL CREATED, what we face in 2019, and beyond. These are dangerous times in the world, and if the male ego doesn´t take a step backwards, I fear woe for all living things.
Please, I beg on all the prophet´s lives and good works, that this season be a turning point in history, when the lion lay down with the lamb
AND PEACE BE LIKE A SHAFT OF LIGHT ACROSS ETERNITY!
    F.A. Hutchison

    • @Goodchappy
      @Goodchappy  10 лет назад

Hi Dave, I got some of these from Willcocks/Rutter books but also a mixture of hymn books and music found online. My Salisbury Cathedral organ now sounds a lot better than it did here, I have tweaked it and it seems to be more alive.

    • @Mrdahaase
      @Mrdahaase 10 лет назад +1

goodchappy Yeah, I've done some "tweaking" on mine as well. Not alot, but have had to do some changes due to accustics, my own speakers, my personal preference, etc. This organ was really designed to play for congregations. Ton's of fun, tho, isn't it. Great idea on the Christmas mix.

You need to stop making excuses for what you consider problems with your playing -- trust me, you play beautifully. If there are any errors no one is hearing them! I've enjoyed your clips for over a year, now. In fact, your playing of "For All The Saints" was one of several factors that convinced me that Hauptwerk was for me I just couldn't believe that a VPO could sound like that! I was sure you were adding reverb. Thank you for inspiring me! I love HW. Wish I could play as well as you!

I listen every night from toronto. Alot of music runs in the family. Unfortunately it kinda skipped me. My great grandmother played an old pump organ at a country church in prince edward county, Ontario. She was a kind soul who in her 90s had dementia but she could still play the old hymns on the piano and if she made a mistake would correct herself. In those days farming was most common in that area and she had no musical training.
