- Video of The Princess Margaret SRN4 Hovercraft at Calais Hoverport in August 2000 - just before her withdrawal from service.
Full engine sound.
I saw a couple of them, but never had the chance to travel in one. Amazing machines.
They certainly were.
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Great to see this. When I was a young lad, we has a family used to go on these great Machines to go on our Holidays and I could not wait to go back on them. Great shame they have gone. But I can still use the Portsmouth to Ryde service when we go over to the Isle of wight.
Thanks, have you seen my other SR-N4 vid: SR.N4 Hovercraft The Princess Anne landing at Calais Hoverport

I believe that the props on the SRN4 were the largest propellers ever made
I have read the same, it may have been correct in its day but maybe surpassed now?
As a kid I spent many an hour sat on the edge of the cliffs at Dover watching these beauties come in, you could see the huge cloud of vapor approaching from miles away. The sound on this doesn't do it justice, they were LOUD, and that whistle you can just hear at about 2.5 minutes where the skirt deflates was like the old war films when bombs are coming down, absolutely amazing machines and this is some belting footage.
I fully agree with your comment. Pity that 4k or 8k films were not available in the Hovercraft era.
I was on the Princess Margaret in 1999. As we left Dover, the captain came over the radio and said “ It’s a very good day for hovering, we will see how fast we can do the trip today” or words to that effect. He then opened the taps and whoosh. 24 mins later we were in France. It was noisy as hell and a little bumpy, but very invigorating. 10 days later when I returned it was just a normal trip, but still fabulous.
@@thighsofsteelindeed2234 Thanks for your comment. Yes, there was a thrill riding on these hovercraft.
