Mercedes' third generation M-Class demonstrated that big SUVs could still be a responsible choice - and a lot more besides. Beautifully made, quietly capable and state of the art in every conceivable way, it redefined the way we looked at the luxury 4x4.
It wouldn't stride across hostile terrain quite like a Range Rover or power around a track quite like a BMW X5, but that wasn't a problem. Mercedes intentionally set out to offer more of a middle ground between those two extremes and, to a large extent, succeeded. Specified for off-road use, it would deliver the mud-plugging prowess to suit any right-minded user. Yet, with AirMATIC suspension, it would ride like a Roller.
Let's summarise what this car won't do: stride across the Gobi desert quite like a Range Rover Sport. Or power round Brands Hatch quite like a BMW X5. But that's not a problem: this third generation M-Class, after all, intentionally set out to offer more of a middle ground between these two extremes and it's a place in which this model feels far more comfortable. Find a used example specified for off road use and it'll deliver mud-plugging prowess expert enough to suit any right-minded user. Get one specified with AirMATIC suspension and it'll ride like a Rolls Royce. Or find an example specified with the clever Active Curve System and you'll get a luxury SUV able to corner like a grown-up hot hatch.
All these things are possible from a car that shows just how far the modern luxury SUV has come - not least in its eco-friendliness. Mercedes set the standard when it came to running cost efficiency with this MK3 model and it was one that caused plenty of head-scratching amongst the brand's closest rivals. There are sportier, more dynamic-looking models of this kind you could buy. But we're struggling to think of a better all-round package. Refined, practical and luxurious, this model at last became a benchmark among its peers. And that makes it a very strong used car buy.

The 350 Diesel is sublime . It eats up the kms and doesn't baulk at an uphill
I have a 2013 ML350 BlueTec and it has been a fantastic car. Bought it used and it has been superb. Comfortable, reliable, great to drive.
Congrats. Would you say the driver's seat will accommodate larger people?
How many kms your car have?
@@mercedeslife1454 130k
I also have this same great car with 40k miles.
@@bradh6185I would say yes
Still a very good car to this day, looks great in silver and used prices are great value for money practical
I've had my 2015 ML250 W166 5 years & it's Brilliant ! , Very well made , Great handling, Comfortable, Very Reliable & Quick & Frugal, I'd buy another in a heartbeat!
Def systems are easy to maintain?
What is the real consumption?
It impresses me how common the absence of sunroofs in SUVs in the UK is. In the US, Mercedes SUVs without a sunroof are relatively rare.
Because there's no sun in the UK
@@quintonbreitmeier4777lol yeah
@@quintonbreitmeier4777 hahaha, best comment
What is SUN😮?
I have young lad, whom I call Son??
From a confused chap in Scotland😅😅😅
Owning an 2014 ML250 Diesel was the smartest decision I’ve ever made
hope you got it deleted

My very low mileage, 2015 GLK350 was delivered today, and I love it! The reason I mention it is that it has the same drivetrain as the ML350, a 3.5L V6 making 302HP, a 7-speed automatic transmission, and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The GLK is quite a bit smaller than the M-Class car, so it is also quite a bit quicker…
I have a 2014 43k ML350 4matic on the way. Should get it in a week or two. Scored on a mispriced car on carmax. Hit prequalify before they fixed it and they agreed to match the original price I saw it at as I had already been approved for the loan on it at the original price.

Enjoy.
What the update so far?
Please tell us more after half a year ownership!😊
It’s a very nice thing.
M Class 2011-2015 is bullet proof. Don't forget to change oil every 5K (with low ash oil if you have diesel). Also, if you have Diesel, change PVC, fuel filler, transmission fluid and orange rubber gasket on turbo intake every 5 years and you are good for ever.
What about the 2015 ml 400
And gasoline??
The Car and driving team thankfully continue to produce top notch reviews with excellent presentation, information, and filming technique, while showcasing the beauty of English countryside and small towns.
Well done, and much enjoyed.
From Geoff in Feilding New Zealand:)
Thank you Geoff!
I want one. Thank God they dont have a stupid sunroof
Love my 2009 ML AMG 6.3 Mercedes last naturally aspirated V-8 kicking out 503 hp. Bad ass , can hang with sport cars AND can carry passengers with their luggage while doing it. Mercedes all day , baby !
I didn't think adaptive damping was fitted as standard across the range, ours doesn't seem to have it. It's odd how you tell us how much to pay for all the extras and say you can specify this that and the other as if it's a new car review. It's a 10+yr old used car.
The ml350 2012 or 2014 with coil springs are better in reliability.🔥
Really
is it a bad car ??
Love my 2012 ML.
Me too, Wish i could find more videos or forums on the 2012 ml 550 model.
What is the MPG please?
Thanks
@@Sub-Kuch13.13 Mine is a 2012 ML 350 (V6), about 25 mpg I think. I store it for the summer (AZ) and have '07 MB C280 and a '23 MB GLC in my northern home. Don't ask how I ended up with 3 MB's as I drove a pickup for 30 years. I enjoy the ML the best.
Great review- LOVE THE ML CLASS
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful review. Great car the W166 series.
Glad you liked it!
This review is really comprehensive!
Thank you!
I love my 2012 ML….only thing I’m concerned about though is the dreaded camshaft adjuster rattle that these are known for 😩. It drives perfect other than the 3 second rattle on warm starts. I really pray to God that the engine doesn’t fail and I can get atleast another 60k out of it.
Is your ml euro6 emissions standard pls???
🎉Fantastic review as always.
Prefer the M class sharp looks than the GLE.
Enjoyed your review on the W212 e220 estate too & ended up buying one, after having a W211 for 4 years.
You do like your baggy shirts.
Thanks again for the details.
Well Done Chaps🧐
Great to hear
All this yacking and I still do not know how smooth the ride is lol.
.
Great review….
Thanks!
Thank you for the analysis given but how about ML500 4matic 2016?
There is no 2016. 15' was the last year.
Any info on the 2015 ml 400
Is the gasoline (petrol) model just as good?
They’re good cars but horrible gas milage
That is not large. That is midsize in the USA. Compare to Hyndai Santa Fe.
Mercedes made in USA are good.
I had one of these and the build was crap, the electrics were not good the seats burnt out TWICE.
Never bought a Mercedes again ,stuck with them from a E230 to E300TDI
7 altogether and the build went down hill on every one
😢
Well I've read all the above .
My wife who I bought this car for told me if she had used it for a day she would never have let me buy it.
You all must be easily pleased or just like the name Mercedes.
The name to me is cheap and greedy mass produced tat.
What were your main concerns?
Ur miss take😂choose women wisely😂
Quess Ford F150 would suite her better
Get a cherokee and save your money same junk
Lol not the same
