People in U.K. can’t afford to buy property and rents are sky high ,and it’s not due to tourism. It’s due to bad decisions made by government. The government of Majorca have to strike a balance between tourism and a fair deal for locals .

I can totally sympathise with the locals- the lack of housing is a problem everywhere. The UK is absolutely squeezed to the hilt with second homes and air bnbs, 5 car house holds, the infrastructure is as breaking point. I live in a seaside town and in the summer the locals can't get anywhere due to the tourists - It's one road in and one road out and we spend hours of the day just trying to get the supermarkets it's absolutely crazy. It's not just mallorca it's everywhere.
What do you suggest? Limiting pregnancies like China? Stopping mass migration? Mass culling? Stop bloody moaning.
But some placards did say 'tourists go home' and some holiday makers have said they have had verbal abuse.

I would love to see this comment addressed. We saw video of British tourists being targeted, chased, and run off the road by the airport. To say that there isn’t active violence against tourists seems dishonest. My fiancé and I (USA) have been so excited to celebrate our honeymoon there, enjoying in the culture and beauty of the island, but these events are making us strongly reconsider… no one should ever have to worry about their safety solely because of their ethnicity or nationality.

I've been in Mallorca for over 40 years. The improvement in the standard of living in the island since Franco is phenomenal. The children of owners of little cafes and restaurants years ago now drive around in top of the range BMW and Evoque SUVs. They are still lovely people !
100% agree with everything you say. My family has been coming regularly for over 55 years. I myself have been coming several times a year for 44 years. Totally get what you say. Some may be finding it hard and the government needs to find a balanced solution (same as most countries), but for many of those long time native Mallorcans that I have got to know over the years who embraced the tourism industry, life is very very good for them now. Much easier than back then. X
I go to Majorca for a holiday and a break from the insane world we live in. Now theres issues in Majorca. And people wonder why I love my dog so much? Its because he's not human.
I live in Majorca and every property I’ve rented long-term has been owned by a local who owns multiple properties and businesses on the island. I’ve never encountered property owned by a foreigner.
I’m also baffled by the fact that Majorca is a somewhat luxury island, can be very expensive and is saturated by tourists. So if tourists are spending so much here, why are the locals annual salary’s so low? That’s not the fault of tourists, that’s the hotel and bar and accommodation owners not paying a fair salary, while they take heavy profits! I’m
not sure why the fight is against tourism as opposed to fair wages so locals can afford property. But like many others have said - this is a systemic global issue that everyone is facing.
@emmacarter6434, yes, I bet every resident here can say the same, I too know a good few property owning Mallorquins. But this protest, at its heart, reflects our worries about how Government policy around the issue of TOURISM, not TOURISTS, is made and implemented.
Absolutely true look at the price of one night in a hotel compared to one day salary for the workers who keep that hotel running

Looks like it’s best to avoid the island for the next year or two. Thanks for highlighting the antagonism towards tourism. I don’t blame them for not wanting us given all the second homes etc
This is no quick fix and you will encounter the same issues everywhere as I said in the video
This is very similar to people in Britain complaining about "foreigners" taking up social housing. It's also the same as people in Wales and England who have lived in seaside towns their whole lives yet can't afford to even rent a home because of people buying second homes or properties for short let. They continue to build hotels that require staff yet said staff can not afford to live anywhere. The scaremongering is absolutely ridiculous. They want people to stay in the UK and spend their money here. The Mallorcans deserve to be able to live on the Island they were born on without a hefty price tag. If it wasn't for these Mallorcans, we'd have no hotels to holiday in. These big corporations need them.

People from Majorca are been called upon to storm the beaches this weekend , this is really putting me off coming back to cala d'Or this summer I think I'm going to change my destination with TUI.
I was also going to open up Hollywood bar in cala d'Or but now to feel unwelcome I'm now having second thoughts about it.
I'll keep you posted about this. I wouldn't worry though.
The protests are about unsustainable tourism, which reduces accommodation (2nd homes, Airbnbs) for locals and pushes up rental prices and affects quality of life by affecting infrastructure and eco systems, e.g. pollution, sewage etc. The problem is common around Europe, e.g, Canary and Beleraic islands, parts of mainland Spain, Venice, Devon and Cornwall in the UK, and other Mediterranean hotspots
So why are they abolishing the golden visa scheme then , that's nothing to do with tourism or air bnb ?
Didn't they have sewage there before tourism?
@stevecaldwell9001 Yes but the processing capacity has not grown and so more tourists equates to more impact. In addition, islands such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura rely on de-salination plants for fresh water and that is becoming an increasing problem.
I know someone who was on holiday & spat at in Palma during the protest march. It’s definitely put me off going back to Cala D’or.
You don’t need to worry about your Cala d’Or holiday - no one is being spat at

When I got to my hotel in Puerto Pollensa on Friday the air conditioning on the roof was on, had to use ear plugs to get to sleep and you could hear it from the main road so a change of room would have made no difference...thankfully it's been off since (or blown up, it was howling!)...anyway I'm from Scotland if I wanted to stay in a chilly room I'd have stayed at home lol

Exactly!! I’ve been to Prague multiple times. One of my favourite places but it is saturated with tourists. I’ve never experienced that level of tourist saturation anywhere in Spain like I’ve experienced in Prague. This is a global issue that the rest of the world is just dealing with and getting on with!

Thank you Alex for the update. We’re all coming for our holiday in September and you have put my mind at rest. Though I wasn’t too worried as i suspected it was to do with housing, had the same issues in Cornwall when i used to live there.
I was in Palma last week on a day trip, it was lovely & the only issue I saw was 3 police who spent their whole time chasing the bag sellers who were absolutely everywhere on their mobiles with lookouts on every street corner racing across the very busy road by the cathedral. There must have been a hundred or more! I stayed in the resorts where all the hotel staff were great & we understood that staff came from Cuba? The season is very short May to October. Same here in Cornwall. No different everywhere & hasnt put me off mallorca. Its a beautiful place.
This isn't the way to sort out the the problem they need to sort it out with there g ministers of the island the should not take it out on the tourist

Nobody is ‘taking it out on the tourist’, though you could say the click bait grabbing British press are, by scaring people with ridiculous headlines. This was the biggest protest the island has seen, so it will hopefully wake up the snoozing politicians! 🤞

We have a same situation in Tyrol Austria in the Region Kitzbühel!But here nobody speaks about it!Expensiv flats houses the people the work here pay over 1000 € per month!
Having holidays in Lanzarote and Mallorca this year, the protests haven't changed our mind as we have always been welcome in the resorts
Thanks for a good, balanced report on the protests. I went to Can Pastilla on a cycling holiday last month and had a fantastic time. Everyone was very friendly. I'm amazed how patient drivers are with cyclists because there are so many. It's a wonderful island to explore.
Yes, even in May, people in the hotel complained about aircon not being on (in their room) but I dont think they realised its centrally controlled, so its all or nothing.
I hope the protests have some positive effect.

As someone who visits the island 2/3 times a year, I've now decided to scale it back after my last visit this March as it's clear it's at breaking point and I can see the issues for those trying to get by on the island. It's probably worse in Ibiza but it's not fair on the locals.
Those with riches and freedom of movement within the eu probably haven't realised their impact along with those outside of the eu buying up properties and making it unaffordable to stay there for those islanders.
Let's hope a resolution can be found soon.

In those touristy spots like Mallorca,Benidorm,Costa del Sol or canary’s will be not economy without tourism.
For most of us Spaniards that live in a tourist free parts of the country tourists means nothing to us.
Most of Spain is tourist free and actually is a petty thing because when you leave those tourists spots and discover the real Spain you gonna discover an amazing and diverse country.
I'd be worried about people from the restaurants doing something unpleasant to the meal I ordered. I simply would not risk going on holiday where there are explicit anti-tourism demonstrations. Obviously the hotel owners and anyone else that makes a big profit from tourism will say that the protests are not aimed at holiday makers. The problem is that it's not the rich people demonstrating against the situation, it's more likely the people that work for them who are angry about low paid servitude. The message from the working class is quite clear. If things have got this bad then I would not like to be part of the problem.
Alex I would just like to say, when I went to Majorca my plane, TUI, had to circle twice because of the air traffic landing in Palma. As the plane went around the second time I found this a bit worrying. Hope it doesn't happen to me and other passengers again.
Absolutely normal, you would have been put into ‘a hold’ until your aircraft was given clearance to land. I’ve spent 35 minutes in a hold before during a storm (coming into land at Luton) It’s very safe, and nothing to worry about.
@@SCOTTCOD4same here Scott. During the summer months, airport can get very busy with aircraft taking off and landing all the time. That's why they have reserve fuel in case of delays. Coming in to land at Gatwick once, I had a window seat looking at the ground for 45 mins before we could land.
When I arrived in Mallorca on Monday, I saw some protests. It’s quite bad. Looks like Palmanova behind there by the way!
I get the feeling that this is going to get worse before it gets better.

its so sad the local people are priced out the market from buying and renting, they need to ave a good home to live in if they are working on the island...its a balance that is needed, surely the government should have projects started for housing for local people.i support the people of mallorca and their protesting🤎

Since July 2017 Properties cannot be listed on commercials platforms such as Airbnb and Homeaway, real estate websites or social networks unless they have a tourism license. Landlords will receive a fine of up to €40,000 for illegal listings and sites a penalty of up to €400,000. Furthermore, an owner can not advertise more than three properties. It is unlikely that illegal Airbnb properties are the main cause of the accommodation shortage over local authorities granting too many licenses. It is a fine balance between supply and demand for local workers on what is essentially a half yearly tourist island. Perhaps 2nd ownership of cheaper/smaller non resort properties could be limited to locals and barred to the tourist trade. Resort accommodation could also face penalties for non usage in season. It is obvious that the protests were aimed at the authorities, not the tourists. Mallorca's population has increased by nearly 25% over the last 20 years, so a program of affordable residential housing needs to be encouraged. The whole developed world has similar issues in cities mostly, but at least they are not limited by such a short period of time to generate GDP. Tricky problem exacerbated by a far shorter season than the Canaries. Rapid overpopulation is the major problem, not tourism despite the odd protest placard.

But properties are being illegally advertised - I know this because my neighbour was doing it for years and the person after her was subletting rooms . The community complained and it’s extremely hard to prove . The inspectors came around and he talked his was out of being victimised by the community! That is just one real example.
There are several apartments in my block of 30 which are illegal holiday rentals too. In fact, if I speak to anyone here who lives in a block within a half hour walks to the sea, they will also say the same. More inspections/checks needed!
You say it’s not about tourists but it doesn’t look like it ,!! I own a house in Mallorca ,I pay a lot of taxes over the year , I don’t rent my house out ! Am I a tourist ? If they want to buy my house let’s talk 👍 it’s corruption and greed not tourists.
I live in a Tourist town (York), locals are seen as third class citizens (after tourists and students). I can see what the locals are on about.

Yours is a great channel Alex, its my goto for all things Majorca and Ive commented many times BUT: The people of Majorca have been complaining about the amount of hire cars on the island, they have always served me well when I go on holiday until this year when it was a travistry! The people of Majorca complaining about tourism and the price of houses/flats. Im lucky enough to know a 'local' who sold a flat by Cafe 1919 in Pollensa, on the market now for 1.2million! No smoke without fire! This year we see sunbed-gate in Pollensa - Regardless of circumstance its shameful. No beds, no wheelchair/pram access/no toilets/no water sports/some cafe bars on the beach yet to open (May2024). We are giving up on our September visit this year, will look again to see if anything has changed next year. Q: Who is driving all these stories...it must be the media?

You are so right, Alex. I live near the Lake District and they find it so hard to find staff in hotels and shops, especially since Brexit. Now like many tourist resorts Airbnb, has upset the balance between local residential properties and exorbitant holiday accommodation.

I totally agree with Kay, their argument should not be with the tourists but with the government they have got there and people buying houses on there and leaving them empty for a good 9 months of the year, someone should step in and say you're not having a holiday home, you either buy and live here or you don't buy at all.
It’s not just buying though. Northern Europeans come and pay double the rent and locals cannot compete. Are they going to ban non spanish from renting also? I can’t see it happening. Salaries need to increase and resorts provide accomodation for their workers

Many Brits did feel intimated by the protest just as Jewish people feel in Britain near a Palestinian march right now. Leaving this morning for Palma and this has affected the planned meet up for seeing friends staying in Soller and us in Pollensa. We would certainly avoid the weekend.

It's the same everywhere, rich people buying cheap property, and the young can't afford to buy, what the government should do, is build affordable housing for first time buyers only.
Young people if they knuckle down stay living at home longer can afford to get on the housing ladder. Culturally Spanish families stay together the oldest will become the Head of the household and they'll live together
You see that too in the Asian Community in the UK.

I am glad it is all good over there, we are coming out on July 10th for a week to Cala Bona. One thing we are concerned about is the price of everything going through the roof plus we have got to pay hotel tourist tax on top of everything else. Oh and please people DON'T listen to what the British papers, its all about making money with them.

I will think twice about visiting Spain again. I adore Andalusia but I don’t want to go anywhere that I am unwelcome. One place where I did feel very welcome was Croatia. Everyone went out their way to accommodate us. x

Hi Alex, I live in London and the problem is quite similar. A two bedroom apartment is going to cost you a lot of money £450,000 + and you're probably going to have a service charge of £500 a month on top.

Blame governments and MSM, we should stand together don't let them divide us. We are just back from Santa Ponsa and we will be back in July, just ignore those two entities and watch Alex and others for the truth....👍
Palmanova is a lovely resort which I have not been since 2002. I would not be put off going again as I understand this is an accommodation for locals issue. I know this is happening all over the world. I can see the spainish authorities need to do more. Like wise I can see people need to be more considerate when booking their holidays in the future.
I completely sympathise with the locals and their plight. I love the island and have many happy memories of family holidays. But I wont be adding to such memories until all parties have come to their senses.

Is the average wage of €1500 euros a month based on holiday season only? In which case for that season they would be earning €3000 a month during tourist season?
The yearly minimum wage in mallorca is €15120. Rents start from about €1000 a month. Hope this clears things up:)
It’s unclear to me how most make any kind of living outside tourist season in order to live when 80% of their businesses is tourism. We’ve seen the videos of the whole island being ghost towns with not even a shop open outside tourist season months. Menorca has the shoe industry but what does Mallorca have? So when someone is saying their average wage is €1500 a month and they’re only working 6 months of the year I wondered if that was taken in account.
@@rachelgreen4003 the National minimum hourly rate is currently 8,87 an hour. I’ve lived here 20 years and worked in bars, kitchens and restaurants where I was paid by the hour. If your job is seasonal you get paid for the hours/days/weeks/months you work and that’s it.
Well it seems the only ones benefiting from being open 6 months of the year are the owners of the hotels, shops and restaurants and not the workers who should leave in their droves with no place to stay. But when supply does not meet demand and it does effect the industry which brings in billions per annum they might decide to pay more and do something about the housing crisis. Best of luck

@@mikegraham8319 I’ve seen figures somewhere saying that the number of lucky recipients of the Golden Visa was very low, somewhere in the 100’s. So maybe that might be a reason? 🤷♀️

as surely people spending upwards of 1/2 mil euros won't affect the general housing economy , it has to be something else , and blaming tourism is ridiculous the island relies on it too much and its only for 6 months ..

Even if airbnbs were restricted, locals are outpriced by Northern Europeans that can afford double the rent. It won’t be possible to regulate the private market. Minimum wage needs to go up so locals have a chance at competing for rental accomodation. Or hotels build and provide accomodation for workers.

Alex what about all the affordable accommodations that the government has built. Large sites are full of needed accommodation. Read it in one of the comments by a resident in Majorca. Looked back at the comment and her name was Ann.
What constructions are you talking about? In Mallorca they only build for tourist speculators. In Mallorca and throughout the Mediterranean coast..

She said there are two large sites where the local authorities have already built social affordable house for the locals. Alex knows her. I will get back to you with her second name. And Alex also said the Calvia government are planing more of these in Calvia.

It’s quite simple to me , if any islands don’t want tourists then stop tour operators using them ! Would never ever happen , saw something about stopping the sale of alcohol in shops from 20.30 hrs ! And the answer is just stock up before they close . I’m off to Benalmadena in two weeks then Ibiza after that .
Fair play to you ,ignore the nonsense on the MSM who are obviously following the agenda.The regular people are being priced out of everything and it’s a world wide problem but if they scare the tourists away from Majorca they are in really big trouble .
That kind of licencing nonsense is rife in Scotland- 10am to 10pm and even with the "minimum unit pricing" we still have the worst stats for alcohol abuse.... all it does is punish drinkers of all kinds and to see an alcoholic rattling in the morning outside a shop going through withdrawal is frankly just cruel ....
I understand the locals however, it is not the tourists fault. I think you have a government that have not been able to maintain a balance and perhaps have been greedy as they benefit from tourism. Therefore, you should not be blaming tourists, specially as more than 50% of your income comes from tourisms. It is a very thing line that should not be crossed if you depend from tourism. I myself and for what I have read in this post will consider to go back on holiday next year to Mayorca. Tourists like me who go on holiday for a week or two can not be blame of your housing crisis. I think your target is wrong and could be devastating in the future.

I've been living and working in Puerto Pollensa for 19 years and all comers are welcome....The government needs to pull their fingers out but there is no overnight fix.....

I only ever visit Mallorca out of season, I don’t like crowds and the service from hotels, restaurants and shopkeepers is always friendly.

They are not protesting about what you think ,but the sky high cost of renting property and being able to live there as residents.
Exactly the same way people in Wales are fed up with people buying homes for short holiday let's or the people who live in Whitby being priced out of their own towns. Absolutely no different. It's funny that some people find this bad, but they have no problem complaining about people from other countries taking up affordable housing in the UK. The media scaremongering again. It's sad that people actually believe the narrative they're fed.

I’m from Lancashire originally, Morecambe is a great resort, a bit past its best compared with 40 years ago, but a great base for touring!
I think they should Ban airbnb & private apartment bookings this would solve most of the problems. hotel bookings help the the economy of Mallorca .
Thanks for giving the real, honest background Alex. Never, ever trust The Daily Mail to report in a fair, balanced or constructive manner. Tourist-based economies world-wide have the challenge of achieveing balance. This is as true in Cornwall as it is in Amsterdam and Mallorca.

There are other islands where you positively get welcomed. To be honest with the Canaries and now Majorca having voiced their feelings why would they be considered as a choice if there is any anti feelings, if indeed they want a rest they may find that happen . I mean the hypocrisy of France right now, EU entry points tougher with fingerprint entry in October for non EU nationals while immigrants sail across the med and walk in. Besides how much EU money is being poured in to these places for tourism. As for the EU having meetings in Spain with regard to sustainability last year to get a balance between residents and tourists clearly that was hot air because why are residents still unhappy. I may consider Gran Canaria but if I get one disparaging look or any anti feeling anywhere from here on in I will choose carefully to return because flights are becoming more expensive and if your staying in five star accommodation it’s expensive to get a murmer of annoyance from a local and if your not wanted you need to think carefully or why bother.
