The Grill-Umods sound fab hey. Just discovered these mics thanks to our mutual friend Gerry Pantazis. Ribbons are the way to go for high transient percussion like cowbells too. Ribbons were famously used to record the glass bottles at the start of “don’t stop” Michael Jackson as they brought out the actual pitch of the bottles rather than just the bright attack you get from a small condenser or the splat from a dynamic. With a ribbon, You get the tone of the instrument much closer to how we perceive sound I reckon with the lovely honk of the cowbell and they take some high eq really nicely. Also great for a long open jazz kick drum tone. Think Peter Erskine “Star” album type of sound. Lovely Playing as ever Darryn. Like you said, ribbons are a must for self recording drummers to give a round warm and beautifully contrasting sound in combo with typical small diaphragm condensers.
Very impressed with the demo you can hear distinctly the diff between the 3 greatest ribbons of all time i have Marks rocket u mod excellent i have a royer 121 and this soynds the same 🎉
This was great Darryn. I believe you made a great choice with the Grills. The Rockets have a bit of beef, but there seems to be more detail in the Grill. Subjective of course. Mark is repairing a stereo mic(similar to the Grill) for me atm, and this def helped me decide whether to get the mod or not! Mod makes a noticeable difference. Thank you!
I disagree, the off balance royer style figure 8 won't produce more detail than a balanced figure 8 of a Coles or a rca 44 design. 44 is the clearest sound as far as details go. What you are probably hearing is the more mid focus of the royer style mic, it does produce lovely details but over all sounds a bit 'grey' to me. This is why it works well in electric guitar, tames the sound, compresses the frequency response but retains lovely mid range detail.
This is a fabulous demo, I'm looking to use these on guitar, I can get a sense of each mix even though it's a different recording context, thanks. I think the rca44 inspired mic is the best for my desired sound. Cheers
It's modelled to be more like a Coles 4038 than an RCA44, but that said the 4038 and the RCA44 are actually pretty close to each other in reality. The 4038 was basically a British answer to the RCA.
@@officialWWM wow I’m surprised they aren’t producing them anymore. I was after a rode ribbon but there wasn’t any in Australia and didn’t want to wait for them.
@@Digital.asset.creatives I want the Rode too but supply still seems to be a problem! I just bought a cheap Superlux model from eBay and I’m actually shocked with how good it is! I’m still go8ng to get something better but I needed something quick for a project and this got to me in 2 days.

Have you ever shot out the Grill Vs an R121?
I really want to but I don’t have access to a R121 at this stage.
Nice one! Love Mark’s work, making great designs at an approachable price.

Cool shootout! I definitely prefer the Rock U-mod without EQ....that thing sounds sweet!!!

Love OPR mics! I have the U87 U-mod and the grill U-mod and I have used a some other models. They all sound great. Nice work Darryn!
Great mics and Mark is a good guy too. Happy to talk the trade for long periods of time.
Great vid Daz. Would love to see more videos on mics/recording etc!

Great video Darryn. Thanks for the upload. I use Marks mics too. Great bang for buck.
Changing to Ribbon mics is not an “upgrade”, it’s just a change.
Good point
U-mod brings out the lows but the nin modded has more top end and less lo end, both sound great though.
Whats the distance of the ribbon mics? Get the impression you could pull them in closer and do less EQ
Thanks for that Darryn , I’m in the market for a ribbon mic. Will now consider these guys, I was leaning towards the rode ribbon.👍
What did you end up going with?
@@officialWWM I ended up getting a SE Electronics VR 1, it’s nice 👍
@@Digital.asset.creatives ahh, I wanted one of those but they are discontinued now :(
