Build an O Gauge Tunnel (Part One)

  • The Ozark Midland & Southern Railway is a relatively small O Gauge 3-Rail railroad. Real estate on the layout is pretty hard to come by so as I begin work on the scenery elements I want to make the most of it. I believe just about everybody enjoys seeing trains pass through a tunnel. The OM&S is going to have two and so despite there being pretty short I wanted to make them special. I remembered watching a tutorial on RUclips produced by a fella by the name of Eric Siegel of Eric's Trains who used an interesting method to create his tunnels. So, I went back and rediscovered Eric's tutorials and was inspired. This video is part one of my effort to create a tunnel using the methods described by Eric. If all goes well I may build a second tunnel using the same method.
    Please understand that I know there are a number of ways to create a tunnel and that the approach I am using here is more involved then some other methods. The method I have chosen here is something I wanted to do for fun and to create something not often seen on a lot of other model railroads.
    Please join me as I work to create the first tunnel on the OM&S. A link to the first of Eric Siegel's eight part tutorial is shown here at • Building O-Scale Tunne... It is highly recommended you watch Eric's tutorial series if you are interested in this method of making tunnels.
    I purchased the products/supplies used for creating my tunnel from Bragdon Enterprises at www.bragdonent... , Amazon, and from local hardware stores and grocery store.
    Lastly, do take common-sense precautions and follow any manufacturer's warnings when working with any of the chemicals utilized with this project. If you are not familiar with hot glue guns, be very careful with their use. Hot glue guns and the melted glue get very, very hot.
    I hope you enjoy the video and find the information useful. Bill B.

      MESA-East Model Railroad Thank you! Honestly, I enjoy making the the videos as it is fun and I learn new things all the time. I think you will like Part Two as we are going to learn about making rock molds and lining the interior of the tunnel with them. There are cheaper ways to make a tunnel, but since I am making only two small tunnels it is not so bad and I think the end result will be pretty cool. We'll both have to stay tune to see how this all comes out. Thanks again. Bill B.

      Thanks Jorge. I never thought about lighting the tunnel, but I am not really inclined to do that. Both tunnels I am making are pretty short so seeing inside should not be to big of a problem. We’ll see. Thanks again. Bill B.

Painted the tunnel portals today. Also working on another short unboxing that I will put out even sooner. Thanks again Ron PS Ron, I will check, but I think the materials I am using are suitable for outdoors. Bill B.

    I was wondering if i could use a 1😊0 inch flex drain pipe

    • @ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway
      @ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway  Год назад

      Hi and good morning. Honestly, I have never thought about using a flexible drainpipe for my tunnels. It is an idea that you could explore, but off the cuff, I think there are easier ways to create a tunnel. On the OM&S the tunnels are very short. For longer tunnels I typically model only the length that I believe one can see in before everything goes black. Usually somewhere between 16 to 18 inches. Once the tunnel is built, I then build the mountain over the tunnel section and paint the interior of my mountain black, so no light is visible, and the tunnel effect is maintained. As you are building your tunnel watch that you have adequate clearances, and I would also recommend making sure that you always have access to the track so that it can be cleaned, and cars and locomotives can be reach in the event there is a problem. Wish I could answer your question more definitively, but like I mentioned I have never tried using flexible drainpipe. Thank you for watching my video. Bill B.
