leah4sci.com/organicchemistry/ presents: Naming Straight Chain Alkanes
This video is Part 4 in the Naming Organic Compounds series
This video shows you how to name organic molecules with branched substituents showing you the 'long' way for each and the accepted abbreviations such as isopropyl, sec-butyl, isobutyl and tert-butyl
Many students struggle with naming because they attempt to come up with the entire name at once and often wind up missing a piece or two. After this series you won't have that problem anymore

You are wonderful! My professor went over this so fast and the book was no help. Seeing it all drawn out and named one by one was awesome. Thank you!

happy to help!
thank you so much for this. I am a very visually oriented learner and and these step by step tutorials are a godsend. My professor just lists extremely long and wordy lists of rules and reads them and never does any examples just showed molecules with the names on his slide. I want to truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for your hard work. I hope you receive much compensation from you tube ads from me as i watch all your videos multiple times.
You're so welcome, happy to help! I personally also learn better from videos, which is why I like to teach this way.
Thanks so much for your tips and tricks! They've really helped me understand and memorize isopropyl, isobutyl, tertbutyl, and secbutyl. :-)

At 2:47 -- I am confused, why do we name the methyl first before the ethyl?
Does it not follow the alphabetical rule?
Ethyl is the parent chain
@@privateincognita71 6 years later hahaha
@@christianperez910 better late than never
..i suppose
when dealing with separate substituents, alphabetical order puts ethyl before methyl. However, when dealing with a substituent ON another substituent, you have to name the sub before the parent.
When methyl is ON ethyl, you name it (1-methylethyl) to show that methyl is ON ethyl at position 1
very very helpful thanks a bunch
You're very welcome!
Thank you, that was great, God bless you

I have a question about the example that starts at 2:00. Why wouldn't that molecule be 5-ethyl-2-methyloctane? If you start from the left of the molecule and curve down, that also gives you a parent chain of 8-> octane. But this gives you 2 substituents rather than 1 like you have. Isn't the rule choose the parent that will give you the most substituents??
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
you're so helpful,thank you😁
You're very welcome!
Hi i have a question, can we name the compound at 4:16 as 4-(2-methylpropyl)decane? Because in the substituent we can have longest chain as 3 carbon atoms or can we? Please help
The substituent chain must start at the carbon attached to the parent chain. This means you cannot have a propyl due to the middle of the prop connecting the sub to the parent.
Thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful. I have a question tho. If I have a chain with tertbutyl and another substituent, how would I alphabetize it? Does it matter if I use tertbutyl or 1,1-dimethylethyl? I know that you’re supposed to ignore the tert prefix but that’s it

If there’s 2 groups of -(2-methyl propyl) on the main chain? How to name ?
