I was pleasantly surprised by the price. The regular IBG Epiphone figured top ES-335 is $700. To get the fancy wiring for single coil/out of phase sounds, locking tuners, hard case and the artist branding for $200 seems like a very reasonable price. Happy for Marty. Learned a lot from his videos!
He definitely started on RUclips earlier than 2016. I think he started on the channel GuitarJamz around 2010, before branching off into his own channel probably around 2016.
This is so cool! I’m a big fan, Marty has taught me so many songs over the last few years. This Signature model is really awesome for both him and all his fans. So glad he did an Epi, that is really nice, but more affordable than a Gibson. Awesome.
Those guitars were already a great value at their standard $700 price point, getting all of these upgrades for less than it would cost just to purchase the parts yourself is a steal.
Props to Marty for getting a signature guitar, I am sure he has helped a lot of people on their guitar journey going back to his “ Guitar Jamz” Days and of course “Marty Music.” I have found his lessons and song tutorials very instructive and he will sure “ get you there” if you want to learn that elusive track. I think the ES-335 by Epiphone complete with the hard shell case is a good value even at $1279.00 here in Canada. It’s $500 cheaper than the Joe Bonamassa sig 335 with a case, but the JB version has Gibson Burstbuckers and a vibrola. If I was in the market for a semi-hollow body I would sure look seriously at adding one to my collection. I have 3 Epiphone Les Pauls and my experience has been great. I love playing each of them as much as I love playing my Gibson LP 60’s standard. Thanks for the info and review Trogly, solid effort as always. Cheers
Agreed! I have the Joe Bonamassa Epiphone ES-335 and prob play it as much as my Gibson standard 60s. Epiphone has been making awesome guitars. Will also add the Joe Bonamassa ES-335 has a one piece neck without the scarf joint which is a nice added bonus.
That truss rod cover was put on before the super glue for the nut had dried. That's what caused it to break when you pried it up. Gotta cut that glue seam between them with a razor knife to separate them. Never force anything. Just get under and around it carefully with the razor until it's free. Rookie mistake. No biggie. We still love ya man! Peace.
You need to check out the Slash signature guitar (Mockingbird) made by BC Rich. Maybe you should even check out the BC Rich Rich B Legacy Double Neck guitar with a 6 string and a 12 string guitar neck. I think that is what they call it.
Man that's a real nice Epiphone Signature, with the figuring and Grover locking tuners and hard shell case, this just may be Epiphone's best deal yet--- other than the Epiphone 60s Les Paul Standard ,which has Grover tuners (non locking ) and a true Solid AA flame top. Great video 🎸👍🎸👍🎸
Beginner here. I’ve been playing this for a week using Yousician as an instructor. I love the way it plays and sounds. My only other electric was a strat, so I was unprepared for the weight of the guitar (I’m much older since those days) but I’m getting used to it. But it’s a beautiful instrument. Worth every penny.
I could just imagine my musical instrument retailer from the time when I purchased my first electric guitar in August 1995 trying to talk me into getting one of these if they were on the market and in his shop during that month. I may have had my heart set on a Stratocaster then, but I would have probably let him sell me one of these if it were in my price point. I could see myself switching on the face cancellation and trying my hand at the electric guitar solo from the Steely Dan song "Do It Again". All the same, I'll say this much. After having watched a demonstration by Guitar MAX of a single cut Michael Kelly guitar the other night, I think Gibson and Epiphone would be well served to check out the Michael Kelly Guitars version of coil splitting. Watching this demo before, I was amazed to discover that they sounded like authentic single coil pickups, that the tabs coil was not being suffocated the way it sounds when I listen to anything from the Gibson hierarchy. The same goes for the Ibanez/Aro Pro H-S-S model my first bandleader got at the same time I bought my first Strat; the split coils on his Bridge humbucker sounded authentically like those of a Strat, and that was just an economy guitar.
One other difference from a Gibson ES-335 is that the top and back is a 2 piece veneer joined at the centre whereas the Gibson is a one show side veneer. The Epiphone headstock scarf joint structurally is stronger than the one piece neck Gibson uses. Overall, the Epiphone is a great guitar considering the price relative to the Gibson ES-335. I would seriously consider getting one if I didn't already have 2 ES-335s. Great review!
unironically is probably one of the best specd epi 335s in the price range, considering its a signature as well is wild with the recent price of epi signatures
That neck construction is nothing inferrior to Gibson, rather the opposite. The scarf joint makes a more robust neck/headstock conjunction. A one piece neck might look nicer, but your neck would always be prone to breaking in this area. The heel extension is also not a problem at all. Even classical guitars are built this way. It saves a lot of wood that would otherwise had to be carved away from the neck.
Marty's Signature looks like a nice 335 option but has to measure up to the Sire H7 for me to consider. Epi costs $100 more but with more features, H7 gets ebony fretboard but no coil splits or locking tuners. Quick connects are great up until you want to mod- my Gibby SG and Gibby LP with similar quick connects aren't interchangeable due to leads in different places on the plugs.
Trogly what I think would become a big video hit is if you did a comparison between an epiphone from all countries they were ever made. Sooo many topics online about Japanese Korean Czech USA Indonesian and Chinese epiphones. Ive never seen you cover an MIJ Epiphone.
@@TrogI swear Marty’s had like 18 channels so it’s a fair mistake to make! I remember first seeing him as a guest instructor on the Rock On Good People channel when I started learning in the early 2000s
May be OCD or something, but the fact the figuring on the top does not run across the top and presents that clear line up the middle messes with me. They all do it, and they all bug me. I think I'd run a strip up the middle that matches the binding if I ever did one or "fixed" one up.
Why would Trogly have a signature guitar? He’s not a player he’s a collector and a retail seller. Get real people. He’s very knowledgeable about certain topics.
Honestly not a bad guitar at all for the price and as a bonus the locking tuners and hardshell case add that much more to the whole package. True with the splitting and o.o.p. features may never truly sound like a Tele or a Strat not everybody likes Fender guitars either. Overall I dig it. Never played or owned a 335 but I think this one's pretty cool thanks Trogly
Very nice Guitar exactly what I would want in a 335 without the four figure price tag lol. But unfortunately, one of the things that I would do other than put new strings on, it is get some touchup paint that would match the color of the guitar and paint over, Marty’s little insignia. I’m not too crazy about that… Other than that the guitar is awesome.
Very Happy for Marty, well deserved, he's awesome to share his knowledge and so humble doing so. Regarding changing out PUs, being quick connects would make it even easier, not harder. Just source compatible leads to the POTs and wire the new set to the leads, plug them in and Bringo!
Definitely going to order one of these when Sweetwater gets them back in stock. Already have a Gibson 335 but this will be a nice backup and happy to support Marty, I learned so much from his lessons. Marty has been my go to for learning a song or techniques.

I don’t know if anyone else is feeling this, too, but I’m thinking that Gibson is trying to make Epiphone the new “Gibson” and then kind of just make “Gibson” more of a boutique line that caters to the custom shop-level crowd. Fender kind of did the same thing with their Mexico-made guitars, which are kind of the standard now. I guess it’s just too difficult to make stuff in the States at a reasonable price point now so the Epi’s (which are great) are all creeping up to low-end Gibson pricing now, especially if they have Gibson electronics.
That's a pretty bad ass guitar. Been lookin for a 335. Guess I know what to get. For that price well worth it. Were you playing through a Marshall? And if so what model amp? Always wanted a 335, and I love my epiphones.
That thing is indeed well-spec’d! It’s certainly not just a beginners’ guitar, although a beginner would be glad to have one. I played professionally for decades, and I’d be glad to have one! Just because it was designed for a guy who does guitar lessons online doesn’t mean it’s a student guitar, and I wish you wouldn’t keep calling it that. Epiphone is really knocking it out of the park these days.
Hey trogloly just got my first LP and I have an in and out of phase w speed knobs but I always pull the knob out when I push the pot any tips to not make that happen?😊
I'm shocked it comes with a hard case. At that price with a case, not a bad price. The pick ups didn't impress me. The neck sounds ok, but that bridge p-up just sounds weak. Wouldn't take much to make it a lot better guitar. Great starter guitar. Beginner quality guitar really has come a long way over the years.
Sucks we are down to these fret boards. I wish companies would use the ebony that wasn't all black. Doesn't work for every style of guitar but i think it looks nice and they are all different
I quite like the look of Indian Laurel. Most of the ebony is left to rot when it isn't all black and that is a huge percentage. There's not much left because of this.
Definitely got a lot of time for Marty. He seems to have a perfect understanding of how many times you need to repeat something for people to get it through their head (saving me from constantly having to rewing the video, which is irksome if you have to do it). Nice guitar, but if I ever get a 335, I'd probably swing for a Gibson.
How come guitars come from the factory with the intonation screws facing towards the bridge pick-up, and not facing towards the stop-bar ? I’m making myself open to possible ridicule, but I’m a grown-up and I don’t know this. 🤷♀️ I need the screws facing the other way so I can get my screwdriver in there and intonate as best I can-- it’s a fretted instrument, and majority of users live with 12 tone tempered Western music tuning, but I still fairly often try to intonate as best I can … 🤔
Aside from the visual flame top and back, this particular sample does not seem to be Epiphone's best effort in terms of quality 😐. There's enough glue left inside for a second guitar, and I've never seen a truss rod cover stick that bad where it actually breaks! I've seen much better constructed Epiphone 335's and hope this one is in the minority (Marty deserves better than this! 🙂. I totally understand the price point though as you have mentioned (Marty's core group of students) and appreciate that he has made this effort with Epiphone to keep the price down. Those Epiphone hard shell cases are really nice, they've really improved with those. I also love that the neck profile does not appear to be a slim 60's type. I really enjoy your detailed reviews and will certainly try one of these out next time I'm in my LMS.
These days if I was in the market I would get an EPI over Gibson, the fit an finish is better, just seems you get more for your money through EPI, as your not paying for the Gibson name and it does just as good of job tonal wise...
@user-qs7ph1uh5h I would say Trogly is more than someone who can "barely play" the instrument. That's a comment more appropriate for someone whose just starting out or has only been playing a couple of years etc. Be nice!
I know Trogly isn’t a great player but he does so much to promote their brand, I just think it would be cool of them to do it, but I get it, he’s not a great player, which he says from time to time in his videos
That es 335 of Marty's and creating Cool guitars he deserves a signature guitar he is full of creative and competent for RUclips and does good live streams and give aways he is the man of his word and he is awesome and Cool
I like the fact that Marty along with the Epiphone team came out with his signature model that's very versatile. Still, $899 is not exactly inexpensive for a beginner. I couldn't see myself purchasing his model. Not because of price but because there would be a lot of changes by the time I would get done, I'd much rather Get a Gibson ES-335 used. Although very versatile the PUPS and splits/OOP options are harsh to my ears. Better PUPS and a Varitone switch would've been better IMO. The focus was to have the Epiphone sound similar to Strat or Tele style sounds, which never seems to work right with a Gibson or Epiphone. It's hard to do all the proper changes without driving the price up. For a beginner, his model works fine, for advanced? not close but that's not what the guitar is about.
Hey Trogly, how hard do you think it’d be for you to get your own signature? Also, have you ever ordered a custom for just yourself to have w/no intention of selling it?
I can't imagine a huge rush to buy these. I can see them dropping a few hundred $ in a sale. I bought the Epi Slash Goldtop here in the UK for £300 off RRP

It has a few more options than my 335. Had I not had the one I already have I'd sure consider it.

Can we just get a Epi 335 with p90s and the stop bar tail piece so I dont have to convert the new Sharaton already
That es 335 of Marty's and creating Cool guitars he deserves a signature guitar he is full of creative and competent for RUclips and does good live streams and give aways he is the man of his word and he is awesome and Cool
I have one disappointment... they did not sell it with an exclusive fedora that is exactly the same one Marty wears... 😢
Well deserved for Marty. I learned a lot from his videos.
A nice looking guitar! Marty is a great guy!
Man. You gotta get your hands on a fluff signature model.
I like the fact that Marty along with the Epiphone team came out with his signature model that's very
versatile. Still, $899 is not exactly inexpensive for a beginner. I couldn't see myself purchasing his model.
Not because of price but because there would be a lot of changes by the time I would get done, I'd much rather
Get a Gibson ES-335 used. Although very versatile the PUPS and splits/OOP options are harsh to my
ears. Better PUPS and a Varitone switch would've been better IMO. The focus was to have the Epiphone
sound similar to Strat or Tele style sounds, which never seems to work right with a Gibson or Epiphone. It's hard to do all the proper changes without driving the price up. For a beginner, his model works fine, for advanced? not close but that's not what the guitar is about.
Gotta love Marty!!
Hey Trogly, how hard do you think it’d be for you to get your own signature? Also, have you ever ordered a custom for just yourself to have w/no intention of selling it?
Good question! Not really a *_random_* question tho lol 😅
@@niczim123 True though lol
899 for a well figured 335 signature with a case is actually insanely good value
$900 for non American guitars is wild
I can't imagine a huge rush to buy these. I can see them dropping a few hundred $ in a sale. I bought the Epi Slash Goldtop here in the UK for £300 off RRP
$900 for an Epiphone 335 an appropriate price? You can find regular 335 at guitar center for $450
Next is the Trogly Les Paul Aldo Nova in Cobra burst AAA quilt top and a Silver Gen 3 chainsaw case.
I still can't jive with Indian laurel. It's entirely too porous for my liking.
Trogly from the future made me chuckle.
Is that the tune in chibi robo when he cleans ?
The cleanest riff a toothbrush can give!
He’s taught a lot of peeps deserves the props ✊🏼 I’d rock it
I wish Trogly would find another tune to finger pick. The tune he always does doesn't ever sound that good.
you tune in just for that part of the video to hate on the melody. while it's my favorite. part of the videos
Long tenon on an Epiphone? Ain't that some crap.
"Middle just for fun" is an actual specification. It's not just for fun. It matters, my Dude.
well it looks good, sounds good price is real good. to me great guitar if you love es335 guitars
