Music studios like to block videos for using 6 seconds of an artist’s music. What they gain from doing this, I don’t know, but they do it. If there’s any parts where there’s no audio, the reason is because it was removed to keep the video up. Thanks for watching guys 👍

kinda like heavy metal and metal, it’s sometimes used to refer to the genre as a whole, but it really just means the older stuff that the genre originated with
Musically, there is no difference. But if you want to distinguish between them, you could say that rock n' roll was American-rooted and rock was British-rooted, and I mean "rooted" as a way to say it was a matter of style, as evidenced by the fact that The Byrds and electrified Bob Dylan are clearly rock and had heard British rock bands by the time they started doing rock. It is similar at what was understood in the 80's for what was "indie rock" (British) or "alternative rock" (American).

@@HaiRune a lot of the examples used sound the same because they’re all really popular songs from each genre. songs tend to get so popular by following certain “pop” standards that transcend genre and appeal more to the general public than a lot of the more niche elements of each genre. basically, you’re hearing 6 seconds of the pop version of every genre in this video.

I've lived my whole life not knowing rock n roll and rock were different things
Rock n' Roll are the old, softer songs of the Rock genre as a whole. Singers of Rock n' Roll are Chuck Berry, Chubby Checker, Nat King Cole, and Little Richard just to name a few.
In fact, "rock" is short for "rock 'n' roll. And even Dave Grohl and AC DC called their music rock 'n' roll, even though it wasn't like the '50s. If you take Chuck Berry and Dave Grohl they have in common they all rock in general. But they played in different eras.

Surprised quite a few rock subgenres were missing when you opted to put in genres that were clearly metal.
Math rock, hardcore, post hardcore, punk (ie rock punk) and the incredibly large umbrella of alt rock wasn't touched. That's just a few examples, you've also got all the EDM/rock genres which could fill an entire video
Alternative/Indie has so many genres and scenes inside it, author probably took his inspiration from "wrong generation" posts.

One that nobody really talks about but everyone's heard is Power Pop
Born in the late 60s and popular from the early to mid 70s to mid 80s, this genre features driving, fun, and relatively simple songs that are based off of pop rock, garage rock, rockabilly, punk, and British invasion groups, with a bit of later new wave influence. Think My Sharona by The Knack, What I Like About You by The Romantics, and 867-5309 by Tommy Tutone. You could also throw acts like Cheap Trick, later Kinks, and Billy Squier in the same list
Glad that you included King Crimson, man of culture 💯
I went into this thinking that Prog wouldn’t even be on the list but I’m so glad it was. Just wish it wasn’t the one song everyone thinks of when they think of Prog but eh kinda the point. The genre is just too wide with too many sub genres tbh.
As what one band once sang..."It's only Rock'n'Roll (all genres included) but I like it..."

Should have stayed in the rock only territory, cuz once you include heavy, death, doom and black metal that means you have to mention them all (power metal, prog metal, Djent, industrial metal, Grindcore, etc...)
Exactly. A little blunder there but good vid nontheless
Djent is neither metal nor a genre
@@FuckRUclipsAndGoogle I think it is! It definitely has its defining characteristics and bands. It's just become a bit of a meme in modern metal youtube, but it along with Thall are both definitely subgenres of metal.

I feel like modern rock has its own separate set of rock branches within it. For instance, while Elton John is objectively pop rock, his music is vastly different from modern pop rock bands like Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, and OneRepublic. Imagine Dragons themselves for as much as people like to rag on them for not being “rock enough” incorporate quite a few different types of rock music into their songs. Might even be worthy of a whole new video covering how they shook up the rock genre.
There is a name for that, "Stomp Rock"
@@WrzodX Hmmm I’ve never heard of that before. Maybe anthemic rock? But maybe that’s more reserved for bands like the Script and the Score
@@jacksauce "Anthemic rock" I feel is a weak term because to me it sounds synonymous with "arena rock/stadium rock", which in fact covers a lot of decades of rock music. There are also other genres of rock that is anthemic, like "Big music" of U2 or The Waterboys. And while "Stomp rock" is by no means a popular term (neither is "Big music"), it refers specifically to this newer electropop-sounding style of pop rock with some indie or alt influences. I think the Script and the Score belong there too but I'm not very familiar with them.
@@WrzodX Google calls them Alternative/indie and Wikipedia calls them pop rock.

The Moody Blues call themselves Symphonic Rock.
Excellent video, musical genres were shown that I did not expect to appear, and others that I did not know existed.
Although there were some musical genres, among them brutal death metal, post punk, progressive metal, industrial metal, space rock, opera rock, protopunk, and Emo punk.
Going from Patience to Pull the Plug is hilarious...
Aaah yes, Barbory… that sounds real…
the strokes were never indie, they made garage rock and were part of the garage rock revival scene. car sear headrest is an actual indie band
Indie rock is, along with garage rock, the most misunderstood genres
I love Punk Rock and Speed Metal!!! 🤘

There is also the “Power metal” genre. An example if which would be the Swedish power metal band “Sabaton”
Early Metallica (RTL) and Pantera (just before Cowboys) could also work out as Power Metal, Sabaton and Dragonforce and such are just a tad more modern and shaped the genre, with earlier examples setting the ground with harmonies, epic solos loud rythm and interesting themes of lyrics
But this video overall is just setting out a very difficult task of naming every genre of arguably biggest base genre)) And it's way too much distinct stuff to name with just 5 minutes of most popular songs of such genres, without actually highlighting the key changes using words (as in Thrash is more of a evolution of NWOBHM and Speed Rock, and Psychedelic and Prog and Alternative are time and genre evading concepts in music)
You chose the worst band to represent the genre... at least pick something good like Helloween or Blind Guardian.
@@Revanchist ok
Dragonforce is fucking awesome tho
what the fuck, rtl by metallica has nothing to do with powermetal, whats wrong with you
1:33 is that the Gooby Goober song?
