    Gosh, that water hydrant trick just love. Runny nose, keep tp in the Isuzu just for that. Know what you mean, you keep at the list as it doesn't usually grow smaller! Wasn't quiet as cold here, but have some nice warm thermal jeans that help a lot. Ladies winter leggings replace long johns on those windy days. It was 14F this morning here, so not near as cold there.

    This is great! You really showed how NOT fun working in the cold is, but has to be done. And your honesty in not wanting to do it, but persevering! Love how you show the creativity farmers have to acquire. My husband still amazes me in this almost every day! So proud of you two! Thanks for sharing your lives, love the videos!

    The straw/trash can idea was pretty good. I was just thinking, if the handle is freezing up, I think we used to take a plastic bottle, cut the top off and set over the handle. Ours was in sunlight so the plastic would heat up a bit. I think we used a milk jug.

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      Thats a really good idea too, I can see where that can help. I think it makes a difference where it freezes. This one freezes down lower, probably where the pipe enters the ground. If the ground gets wet there it makes it really susceptible to freezing there. Thank you very much for the great idea! - Mike

    The net wrap makes great insulation for water pipes. I use it all the time. It creates 1000 of air pockets and will not rot over time, and still works if it gets wet, and mice don't like to nest in it. Just cram your net wrap bundles into your trash can insulator. Try it sometimes.

    Damn Mike sitting here in Florida at the kitchen counter with a hot cup of coffee it sure looks cold and nasty there. Been there done that but I’am surprised that you don’t wear a pair of leather chaps. Not the motorcycle type but work chaps no tassels or fancy rodeo type just good old work chaps. They keep you warm and dry,and trust me your wife will love you when it’s laundry time. Even though it’s warm here I still would give it all up to be back on the farm. Again thanks for the videos and keep them coming 🙂

    Have you ever thought about building a pipe rack for the Gator? It could be made out of pipe and connect to the four corners of the bed and extend over the cab. It would be useful for hauling long boards and such instead of having them hanging out both sides of bed which is kind of dangerous.

      I find your honesty, organization and work ethic refreshing. Our group of cattle is small but growing. We direct market our beef, pork and chicken through several local organic vegetable CSA'S. Adding three May born steers and 4 bred cows to the group next week to meet the increasing demand. Tomorrow I am picking up 3 steers worth of steaks and hamburger from our butcher for distribution.

    Great video. Used to love burning feed sacks and baling twine was a chance to warm up. Thought I was the only one with sometimes. Sometimes I remember where I put stuff. Past guys I've worked for when a cow decided to remodel the corral we strung Barb wire to replace the boards course you know how temperary fixes go lol . Stay warm weve been cold been fighting frozen house pipes. But supposed to be almost sixty by the weekend

    Hello Mike! I had one suggestion, if you still have some of that old oil pipe you used to build that little bridge for your gator, you could use that stuff to build permanent corners for ur fencing. Sure it takes a bit more work, but they can be re used when you have to redo that stretch of fence and they are way stronger then A wooden corner!

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад +1

      Thats a good idea, I am planning on getting a bit of fencing done with it over the summer. I have a few high pressure areas that I want to reinforce also. Thanks - Mike

  • @EZ570
    @EZ570 6 лет назад +1

    the broken boards can be screwed to the new boards at a 90 degree angle on the back side to stiffen them from flexing and breaking when cows try to go through them. In this way with just the cost of a few more drywall screws you can have a much stronger fence, and you don't need a place to toss the shorter broken boards!!!!!

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      Very good idea, and great for high stress areas like corners. Thank you - Mike

    The list is a never ending list, there is ALWAYS something to do , whether farming/ranching or just owning property and a house. Arthritis stops me from working outside in winter and in summer I am away working at my summer job, so I only have spring and fall to get things done.

    Got the same problems as you have Mike when it comes to project lists growing but that's life for you even when its cold !!! in my case trying to remember the to do list is my problem until having to use the machine or any sudden repairs come up and needed done a,s,a,p becomes a quick race to get them done. Although I did make sure yesterday in my spare time to grease the farms tractor and loader before mucking out the cattle shed when the time comes mainly because of a saying '' it only costs £1,50 for a grease cartridge then to spend thousand's of pounds to repair or replace a loader or a tractor ,, especially when its not mine and I would certainly wouldn't hear the last of it from the owners. nice vid Mike thanks.

    Hey mike this was a good video today. At least something's got done I agree with you about lets wait till the snow melts off the roof before we fix it on the calving barn. That was a good ideal on how to insulate the faucet I hope it works. it has turned cold here again temp is about 8 with a wind child of -5 we got about 3 to 4 inches of snow today but its supposed to warm up here as well and be near 60 over the weekend. Hope you have a great day God Bless

    I've watched Blake a few times but he doesn't answer comments like you guys. Net wrap builds up fast , we use mostly twine and it doesn't build up quite as bad but we have had fire bans so my pile just gets bigger and bigger , I tell the kids one day it will heat enough and start on fire. lol I guess I'll burn it one day.

    • @OurWyomingLife

    we used to have gobs of used net wrap off of bales. Hating to throw things away if we could reuse we would put it on a rack like used for chains on a big rig, just posts sticking up. We would then use the wrap on loads needing to be tied down by spreading it over the load and tie it together with trimmed pieces to make a mesh tarp. when we get to the dump it is disposed of.

    Hey I just noticed you made 10,000 subs!! Yesterday it was 9.8!! Congrats! You did it! I think I've watched most of your videos over the last week. You do a great job with them. I think the number of your subs is going to skyrocket over the course of 2018. Besides the fact that you do a good job with your videos, I think learning what goes on day to day on a farm or ranch is interesting to a lot of people. Most people drive by on the road and see cows in the field, or a tractor in the field and hay bales but they don't know the how or why. Really, unless you had a farm in your family or worked on a local farm you would have no clue. Anyway, great job and stay warm!

    Love the project list, should do one sometime how the project list gets abandoned in order to put out a fire. For example, woke up Mon. morning and contemplated which jobs needed tackled in the -2 and 35 mph windy conditions, then found a malfunctioning water fountain about to freeze up and compromise the entire farms water system. The project list got thrown away for that day.

    Mike I am starting to feel bad with the weather in Alaska being so much wormer than in Wy. But last year I was driving to Delta when over by Paxton I hit about a 15 mile stretch of -60. So I know we have it on the way just not at present time. +43 above today.

      Check this out. Last night it was -9 here. A neighbor of mine called me to get the temp here and told me his thermometer was showing -22. He though it was broken. So he got in his car and drove up to my place, where his car showed -9. Then drove to his place where it showed -22 then he drove another mile down the road and it was -11. He lives down in a draw. The weather can be crazy. Thanks Todd! - Mike

      Here is another strange, We have no snow but Thompson pass set a worlds record for the most snow in the shortest period of time. 3 feet in 90 minutes. Thompson Pass is only about 150 miles as the crow flies from Seward.

    Mike, a question for you and Blake on live stream night: Can you plant trees for a wind break there in your area of WY? If not why not?

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      I can answer that now if you like...Blake may have a different answer for his area of Wyoming. He lives about 300 miles south of us but in this area you can. Trees here require a lot of babying early on in their development and require water irrigation. Erin and I are planning on planting a shelter belt at some point this year, the trees will require drip irrigation and stakes to keep them upright in the wind. They may also require snow fence to protect them from snow in the winter. Thanks Dave and thanks for watching - Mike

    Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your day to day life... Why would you use a gator instead of, say, a pickup truck? It seems that those larger loads would be less of a cram in the bed of a truck

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      Mostly it just comes down to fuel and convenience. The gator gets around great in the snow but you are right, it would have been easier with my pickup. Its amazing how you just get in a groove and dont even think about a better way to do something. Thank you very much! - Mike

    Hi Mike...I am new to your channel. One of our subscribers sent me over here because you had made the bucket stuffed with hay to keep your hydrant from freezing. We just moved to Wisconsin and we had our hydrant freeze last winter and were hoping to try this trick. I was wondering if it worked for you? Pleas let me know. God bless, Brad and Christa (Big Family Homestead)

    Hello mike! Recently subscribed and your channel is so informative and the content is excellent. I’ve learned so much! Love the different angles and not bad, since you’re a one man camera crew, actor and director 🎬 One question though - does the gator have heat? Such a useful tool to have around the ranch and I hope it keeps you warm.

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      Thanks Minh, I try to put out the best product I can. As for the heat, yes and no. I have a small 12volt plug in heater that I can put in there if its really cold. Bad thing is that I have a habit of forgetting to unplug it and it kills the battery. The gator stays pretty warm in the cab because you are practically sitting on the engine so it does warm up. Problem is keeping the windows from fogging up. Thanks for watching - Mike

    Why don't you just take the net wrap to the incinerator in the tractor? It seems like a waste of time to transfer it all from the tractor to the gator.

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад

      Hello Jesse, if I drove by the incinerator on my way back from feeding it would make sense to just stop and drop it off, but its on the other side of the ranch yard. Its not any more time to just gather it every few days and take it to the incinerator. Some days its easier to just toss it out and get back to my day or the project at hand. Thanks for watching - Mike

    Mike and Erin, suggestion: Consider picking up more subscribers if you took a little educational time on a "how to" video to teach those who don't know how to subscribe (you have to create a youtube account first and also a channel along with "setting a name", All of this just to "add a comment"! It took me many hours over several days to figure all of this out, and I about gave up! Why was I prompted to create a channel, but all I wanted to do was add a comment. Very confusing! Even the "how to" videos on youtube did not help much. Thanks!

    You haven't been in ranching long enough to have learned how to "temporarily" fix something. That one board was still screwed into the post. All you needed to do was wire the split pieces together with baling wire (or electric fence wire) then screw the other end back to the post. The top board could be fixed by screwing a board to span the break, then screw the ends back into place. Heck be cheap and reuse the screws. Walla! A temporary fix that you can keep messing with for years to come! Why freeze your fanny off when you can just cobble it back together? lol With all those "temporary" fixes you could soon have your own "bailing wire outfit." BTW: Why don't you wear insulated coveralls? The bib style one's work best as you can take off your coat if you get to hot.

      @OurWyomingLife  6 лет назад
