Hey there again, Thanks for watching. I've had a few questions about the cake feeder itself. Ours was manufactured by a guy in Harrison Arkansas named Randy Stull. If you would like to check them out you can do so at www.stullfeeders.com/ We aren't getting anything for mentioning him but he is a great guy to work with and you can tell him Mike sent you! Please keep your suggestions coming, you guys have so many great ideas it is amazing and although I'm sure I could never get them all done, they really get me thinking. Thanks again!
With the cold and snow I was surprised that you didn't sweep that trailer off outside of the shop instead piling it up on the shop floor. Certainly a good idea freeing up the gator so other jobs can be done. Some folks buy bulk cake and just drive under a gravity fed chute to load your mobile feeder. Good video.
Nice. Glad it worked. I'm not a farmer nor a rancher (but wish I was) and I hardly ever throw anything away. You never know if/when you're gonna need it.
I'm a ranch hand here in East Texas, we have 85 head on 300 acres. It's nice to see someone who enjoys ranching as much as I do. I work all day, come home and watch your videos, I really enjoy your content. What I also admire is the fact that you take the time to respond to your viewers. We appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos!
The Best ideas are often the simplest. Re using old kit . And freeing up the Gator at the same time.Well done Mike . Only small fly in the ointment, when you next want the Gator you'll have to go looking the garden!!!
Congratulations! You didn't miss a beat. Your "RANCHING" skills are admirable. It can be daunting working out of your "comfort zone" but we see you do it successfully every week. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Mike , it is so satisfying when plans come into action with minimal problems ,you can just stand back and admire your work with a smile knowing its a job well done . Cheers from Oz to you and your family. 😊
Hello Mike, I just watched the cake feeder video. It reminded me of the small hand bag I keep on my fishing boat. I put a few tools in it to use......just in case. It seems a similar small bag would be useful in your circumstance. You could carry it on the gator or tractors or when pulling a trailer into town. I keep a hammer, phillips and blade screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wench and utility knife in mine as well as some boat specific things.
Awesome idea, I have tried to do something like it in the past, but (completely my fault) I end up stealing it for somewhere or something else. I'm going to have to make a few of them. Thanks - Mike
Good job mike. Since you have that 4 wire trailer connector how about using the other 2 wires to charge the battery from the gator ? Add a small inline fuse too. For serious protection a battery isolator will make it foolproof... 👍🍀
Love your videos! 2 quick suggestions: You should cover the four lag bolt heads that are holding the battery box down so they don't puncture the battery when/if the battery vibrates. 2nd: replace the feeder button with an on/off switch to free up your hand. Take care!
Great ideas. I'm gonna put a battery pad under it and as for the switch I just had to use the one I had but i like that idea. Filming, pushing the button and driving was a bit difficult lol. Thanks! -Mike
Hahaha yeah, we are going to put the cows up once a week in the pen so they can get cake without being harassed by those ‘jackasses’... Literally and figuratively!! Lol
Have you tried putting the trailer on skies during the winter? Like a bush plane does in Alaska. Short wide ones would keep the trailer from sinking in the snow. Good luck.
You could also put a sprayer or a grass seeder or haul the mineral tubs or salt out on the rear portion of the trailer. You could make a sort of dock that you can stand on next to the trailer to make it easier to load the cake from the bags. Would be as simple as pulling up next to the dock and pallet.
Hello Mike just a suggestion We had our cake feeders mounted on the flat bed of our trucks they’re working very well U might want to check it out u can find the feeders in Uvalde Tex at Uvalco store ask for Randy for a good price if ur interested they can deliver them too. Stay warm my friend.
A good idea for the cake feeder! And it looks like you have as much luck with the little things as I do, the simplest things turn into a day's work sometimes. Usually it's the most trivial and small things that turn out to be a pain.
After a few trips back for tools I now carry a pliers, small crescent wrench, screw driver and a fencing tool with clips permanently in the glove box of the Ranger and a ratchet with torx bit for those terrible door hinges.
I've tried to do that, I'm bad and always end up robbing from it because its closer or something. I usually have tools in the glove box but always the wrong ones. Thanks David - Mike
Just wanted to say it’s awesome watching your videos. I’m about to retire out of the army and it has been given me some ideas for my own little cattle farm that I’ll be starting when I get back state side from South Korea.
Hi Mike, great to see someone on YT smart enough to take ideas from viewers! I actually thought about a trailer the first time I saw the cake feeder and your lack of room on the Gator, but didn't bother writing seeing some other RUclipsrs that plainly refuses to take hints from comments while continuing to shoot themselves in the foot. It is refreshing to see that you definitely are much wiser than that.
I alway figure if you put a bunch of smart people in a room then the ideas will flow. I look at our channel as a community and there are alot smarter people here than me. Thanks for watching, hope to continue to hear from you - Mike
Technically you could just put the feeder in the loader bucket, strap it down, gently close the teeth and rig a wire to the cab. Roll the hay out the back turn around and cake off the front but that would require being able to stab off the balls without having to use the loader at the stack. I've seen it done before. Some ranchers are switching to pickups with a cake feeder in the front of the flat bed and then it has a ball arms off the bed for rolling hay. Much easier then fighting a stuburn tractor on colder weather mornings.
Great Ideal it seemed to work well mike. I would suggest drilling holes through the cross member of the trailer to bolt the cake feeder to too hold it securely And maybe a couple of straps for added insurance Just because it bounces so much in the rough fields. Great video. Hope you, Erin and the rest of the family are doing well. Have a great day!!! God Bless
Good point Bob, I figured that out really quick. On my way back to the shop it let go and almost bounced right off the trailer. Bolts will work better. We are well, thank you - Mike
I once rewired a old cabin in northern Minnesota with old extension cords..That was about 20 years ago, and to my knowledge it's hasn't been replaced and still working like new..
What an excellent “life hack“ as I like to call them. I am always looking for ways to make a tasks easier and more efficient. when I find a way I get overly pumped up about it. I’m sure you must be thrilled as I would be. Great video, as always! :-)
@@OurWyomingLife ahh, if it is for that short of a time I fully understand why that wouldn't be ideal :) altho you could keep it hooked up for longer when you got done 😊 just to even put the voltage of you verent going to use it in a short while 😊 Love your channel tho, I'm a new subscriber and are looking to buy myself a "ranch" here in Norway, altho alot smaller 😅 😊
Mike just a thought but I would run the feeder on a deep cycle battery they are better for the draw down and recharge then a standard battery. Great video
Very true, however I cant use it to power the feeder because it draws too much power and would melt the wires. Found that out the hard way when it was on the gator. Thanks - Mike
I see you have some old wooden pallets/skids u get wen u buy the cake for the cows ..can out em to use by putting stuff on them u want to store out side to keep them from rotting out the bottom of w.e ur storing...also good to make shelves out of them as well ..I use them to store my snowmobiles in during the summer ..the grass will eat away at the rubber tracks if I don't
FYI - John Deere is recalling 68,000 Gators due to the steering shaft disconnecting from the steering rack. You can call 800-537-8233 to see if your Gator is on the list. Fun video, Thanks!
Hey that was a great idea. Did you ever figure out the idle problem? A ratchet strap up and over the top would probably help with stability. As long as the top edges aren't sharp.
Mike, someone may have already mentioned it but I think you might have to much air in the trailer tires ! You shouldn't need much for that light of a load. Just my penny's worth !! A great video my friend !!! Thank you !!! Please be safe and God bless !!!!!! Eddy
Really like your videos. Seeing how you have 2 more wires on your plug I would think you would be able to trickle charge the battery on trailer from the gator when your using the rig.
I thought about that, but its really on the gator for about 10 minutes while caking. I'm not sure it would have enough time to charge. Thanks Chris. - Mike
Really enjoy your channel. Just a thought, couldn’t you use the other two wires in the plug to run power and ground to the motor and delete the battery all together.
Great way to make use of old trailer looks like it be easier to load feeder also always wondered what cake was made from around here we supplement with distillers or corn
This might odd suggestion for you but if you keep a tool box(es) at different check points on ranch and on the vehicles it will save less time traveling back and forth. If the vehicles have room.
I have tried that, it works for a while, but somehow things always get moved around, stolen from one for the other. It gets to be a mess. We do have a traveling box taht we can take with us though. Thanks - Mike
Hey Mike, just an FYI... I heard you say you were going to be soldering wires? Any wire connection in anything that vibrates (cars machinery, noats, planes, etc), you should avoid soldering. Soldering those connections makes a weak point prone to breakage. Use solderless (crimp) connectors and terminals instead. It will keep you running! Great channel bud, glad I found ya.
I like to use non insulated crimp connectors and then put glue sealant heat shrink over the connector for long lasting weatherproof connections. All available on Amazon! Best of luck bud!
Thats a great idea, we have had some requests for a video about the cows personalities, a great way to incorporate both. Thank you very much, love the ideas - Mike
Use the other 2 wires from the 4 way to supply the 12 volts to the feeder motor, eliminating the need for the stand alone battery. Enjoy the videos! Thanks!
Mike next time don’t cit the terminals off you can simply remove the strap on the battery connector and bolt the terminals to it with the bolts that holds the strap and you don’t get corrosion growing up inside the cable
Luckily the one feeder holds all that I will end up feeding in a day, if things get bigger you never know. I might need a bigger trailer lol Thanks for watching - Mike
Luckily all that I need to feed to the cows per day fits in one cake feeder but a great idea if I need a refill and the trailer allows for it. Thank you very much - Mike
I did think about that and almost got one but I had a trickle charger laying around that I put on it. Plus I'd have to brush snow off the panels. :( thanks - Mike
Thats a good idea, I have quite a few around, almost all trailers have them, in fact in that box on the front of the cake trailer there is one. Thanks - Mike
Sorry for the 10 month late reply but instead of hooking up the gator why not get an automated deer feeder with a solar panel (modify it for the cakes) then set it up to spray cakes out at a specific time of day
for the project list.. build a silo.. you earn the money back in no time..loose feed is way chaeper than bagd..:) must be a good secondhand market for these things..
To build an overhead cake bin I need about 10K. We pay an extra 2$ for bagged cake. Thats 7 years worth of cake, but yes it is cheaper. Hopefully someday we can afford it. Thanks
I though about it, but its really only hooked up to the gator for about 10 minutes while I run out and feed, not sure it would be enough time to put a good charge back on the battery anyway. Thanks - Mike
Oops Mike feel silly about suggesting getting a hopper last night ......lol grounded due to shoulder op after flipping the 4 wheeler on my self ........so finding your videos has been a god send when I can not sleep. Check out 'Little farm with the big views ' on Facebook you will see how hilly we are. We have a scrap corner for projects too our last one was making new latches on the kennels as Flash was opening his and letting everyone else out.Jacquie
Its all good, I cant expect someone to know everything that happens or we do around here. After all we only post 10 minute videos and not everything we do can get into them. Thanks we will check them out. Thanks for watching - Mike
I was watching a bunch of your videos and noticed you said plow when referring to what we in wi would call a drag, do you use moldboard plows there? If so what do you call it?
Hey there again, Thanks for watching. I've had a few questions about the cake feeder itself. Ours was manufactured by a guy in Harrison Arkansas named Randy Stull. Love this. Next step is dual directional Cake feed thrower. Or even better remote control variable speed, variable throw distance.
That covered 2 bases, work and a viewer. Outstanding friend!
Love the voice, the vids, the Fam and the Ranch!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching - Mike

This is why I hate to throw anything away that might have any chance of being reused. Great set up.
The birth of the junk drawer, or garage. lol Thanks - Mike
We have a old trailer, going to have to try this. Thank you and thank you to the person that gave you the idea.
Thank you, I wish I could find the comment. I've been searching lol - Mike

Another great project mike!! Love seeing the innovation you come up with when solving a problem!
Thank you Sir! You should keep that Donkey from picking on those poor cows! lol Thanks - Mike
Hahaha yeah, we are going to put the cows up once a week in the pen so they can get cake without being harassed by those ‘jackasses’... Literally and figuratively!! Lol
Great idea with mounting the cake feeder to the trailer, I'm sure that gator is going to be much more useful now.
Yeah, I dont like not being able to use it for all I usually do. Thanks a bunch - Mike
Good idea!
I agree. Thanks George - Mike
Have you tried putting the trailer on skies during the winter? Like a bush plane does in Alaska. Short wide ones would keep the trailer from sinking in the snow. Good luck.
Thats a good idea, problem is that we dont have snow all the time but even then it would slide over frozen ground. Thanks - Mike
awesome idea Mike.
Thank you sir! - Mike

I have thought about that but I didnt want to take up the room on my only pickup. Thanks - Mike
A good idea for the cake feeder! And it looks like you have as much luck with the little things as I do, the simplest things turn into a day's work sometimes. Usually it's the most trivial and small things that turn out to be a pain.
I very much agree, its always the things that you think that wont be a problem. Thanks for watching - Mike
Awesome! The feeder and the trailer are a match made in heaven, LOL.
They do work well together. Thanks Steve - Mike

Thanks Calum! - Mike
Now you can also pull the cake feeder behind something else other than the gator if need be too.
Very true, but I'd have to rig up another button :) Thanks Cody - Mike

Put a switch on the power (+) wire from the battery to the cake feeder to save the charge on the battery
Mike when I've had to run long stretches of wires I use old extension cords. Ever used then to wire trailers for lights
Thats a great idea!! Where were you a few hours ago! lol Thanks Kory - Mike
Our Wyoming Life wandering tractor supply and dreaming
I once rewired a old cabin in northern Minnesota with old extension cords..That was about 20 years ago, and to my knowledge it's hasn't been replaced and still working like new..
Sometimes you can buy a new extension cord and cut the ends off cheaper than you can buy an equal length of wire.
David Harris exactly plus it's all bundled together

Those black and white steers from #80 are butterballs! Lol. I’m surprised the cows are getting anything with those cute Hoover’s around.
haha, its tough sometimes lol - Mike
Great vid. Have a think about adding a rubber mat under the battery in the box to protect it from the 4 hex screws.
If you also hook up the battery to the 4 way plug you could charge the battery on the trailer while using it :)
I thought about doing that but its really only hooked up for a the 10 minutes it takes to go out and feed. Thanks - Mike
@@OurWyomingLife ahh, if it is for that short of a time I fully understand why that wouldn't be ideal :) altho you could keep it hooked up for longer when you got done 😊 just to even put the voltage of you verent going to use it in a short while 😊

You can use the 2 extra wiwers to power the feeder or charge the battery
Very true, however I cant use it to power the feeder because it draws too much power and would melt the wires. Found that out the hard way when it was on the gator. Thanks - Mike
Good video and ya was able to use stuff ya already had on the ranch
Yes that definitely helps. Thanks Russell - Mike
I tend to save them for just those reasons. You never know when they will come in handy, thanks for the great ideas. They always help! - Mike
Mike, you may want to wire in a fuse to the feeder's connection to the battery for safety. Not the biggest deal in the world but good to do.
Very good idea, better safe than sorry. Thanks Rob - Mike

Can you do a video about the special cows like 80 or 137
Thats a great idea, we have had some requests for a video about the cows personalities, a great way to incorporate both. Thank you very much, love the ideas - Mike
As always great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching Todd - Mike
Use the other 2 wires from the 4 way to supply the 12 volts to the feeder motor, eliminating the need for the stand alone battery. Enjoy the videos! Thanks!
Thank you very much - Mike
you should think about a wind mill for power for the farm..
We have one. It's right by the high tunnels and been in a few videos. Thanks - Mike
Oh good! It's the latest "Hi I'm Mike" video. lol. More time with family.
Thanks for watching - Mike
Mike next time don’t cit the terminals off you can simply remove the strap on the battery connector and bolt the terminals to it with the bolts that holds the strap and you don’t get corrosion growing up inside the cable
Mmm giving me ideas now 😁 cake over here $17 per 25 kg expensive here as well .
wow, that is expensive. Thanks for watching - Mike
how about using a seeder, and modify it to fit the cake , it may allow it to spread it out further
Interesting. Thank you very much for the idea Randy-Mike
handy little trailer
Seems to be so far. Thanks - Mike
Trailers big enough for two cake feeders discharge on both sides of the trailer, just a thought.
Luckily the one feeder holds all that I will end up feeding in a day, if things get bigger you never know. I might need a bigger trailer lol Thanks for watching - Mike
You should put a few cake bags on the back of the trailer so you have cake when you run out
Luckily all that I need to feed to the cows per day fits in one cake feeder but a great idea if I need a refill and the trailer allows for it. Thank you very much - Mike
Our Wyoming Life thank you I am a big fan of you guys
Thank you very much :)
Great video Mike!
Thank you Tyler - Mike
Excellent
Thank you ! - Mike
thats some impressive ingenuity. also how will you charge the battery for the feeder?
The tender is just a small plug in trickle charger. Thanks - Mike
Another great video!!!!!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching - Mike
I just had someone give me a little trailer, must be a common gift??
Must be, I think people dont know what to do with them. Thanks - Mike
"On this week's episode of man vs trailer" 😂😂😂😂
That's funny stuff!!! Thanks for the laugh -Mike
Ha you're welcome have a wonderful rest of your week!!!
You need a solar panel like you get for a gate opener so you don’t have to charge the battery.
I did think about that and almost got one but I had a trickle charger laying around that I put on it. Plus I'd have to brush snow off the panels. :( thanks - Mike
Ha ha. I have drilled through the dummy plug to install a switch, also.
That cow licking its lips thinking about cake! LOL!!!
It wouldnt surprise me at all! Good eye Curt! - Mike
I have a viewer suggestion. Ge a 5\16 chain about 10 or 12 feet long with grab hooks and let it live in the Gator as long as you own it.
Thats a good idea, I have quite a few around, almost all trailers have them, in fact in that box on the front of the cake trailer there is one. Thanks - Mike
I always look at what you call cake; range cubes
I've found that different regions call them different names, like pop, coke, soda. Thanks Earl - Mike
Range cubes in Alberta, ranch cubes in Texas
Earl Jensen cake in Wyoming lol
Cattle don't care what you call it. :D
Some of us call them cattle nuts as well as cattle cake too.
Sorry for the 10 month late reply but instead of hooking up the gator why not get an automated deer feeder with a solar panel (modify it for the cakes) then set it up to spray cakes out at a specific time of day
for the project list.. build a silo.. you earn the money back in no time..loose feed is way chaeper than bagd..:)
must be a good secondhand market for these things..
To build an overhead cake bin I need about 10K. We pay an extra 2$ for bagged cake. Thats 7 years worth of cake, but yes it is cheaper. Hopefully someday we can afford it. Thanks
Have you had any thoughts about hooking the feeder battery to the Gator charging system via the trailer plug connection?
I though about it, but its really only hooked up to the gator for about 10 minutes while I run out and feed, not sure it would be enough time to put a good charge back on the battery anyway. Thanks - Mike
Why don't you try building a small conveyor for loading the cake feeder?
Actually on the trailer its not bad at all. Thanks Cody - Mike
That is a spring tooth plow with a harrow drag behind it. We all moldboards plows the same. Thanks for watching. - Mike
I did not play with electricity Mike.hehehe
Haha, thanks Roman - Mike
What if you put all the cubes on the trailer so you don’t have to go to pick up some more and what is that cooler on the front of your trailer
the trailer is only rated for so much weight, its a rubbermaid storage container. Thanks - Mike
My name is Mitch and I'm a rancher but I'm still a kid with my family
Thats cool. Great job! Thanks for watching - Mike
Hi mike what up
Hey Jacob!
I would have used a remote to operate the auger, no stringing wires.
2lbs per Cow is perfect.. how many days a week do you feed?
Can you put boards on the sides and use it for calfing
Very true. Thanks - Mike
Work smarter! Not harder!
