Portnoygraphy is addictive.
God, I love this one…
Mike Portnoy is one of the few drummers where you can call his playing "shredding".
@@LoganStryker82 name one
Virgil Donati says hold my beer
he should becoming the next dream theater's drummer.
He WAS in Dream Theater. But he quit for some reason.
he wanted a break from the whole dream theater thing, because when he left dream theater they had been going for so many years non-stop, and he wanted to do something different!
DRUM Theater... haha
Guys it's a joke
Terry Music that was an obvious joke
Mike is such a cool drummer. When he hits those tom rolls, you instantly recognize the tuning. What a sound he has always had.
word has it he traded this set for a hello kitty 5 piece.
Josh d: He made out well then!😂😂
No that’s Nico McBrain 🤣
Make a custom made full scale hello kitty drum set just Mike👍
🤣🤣🤣
How many times has he fallen over, playing it I wonder..
I love this drum kit
I love this solo
I love this man

He's not gay
@@DruGaTecH are you sure?
@@sugengrahayu9171 yeah somewhat... XD!
Sorry, he's not gay
The thing that makes Mike so great is not just the speed with which he plays but the power and fluidity. It differentiates him from some of the speed demons out there that can play faster, but with not as much "attack" on the drum head. Oh and if you are even vaguely paying attention there are plenty of examples of double and triple strokes that he is doing throughout the entire video.
Actually one of the better solo's i have ever heard him do. His creativity when writing music is unmatched by almost any drummer out there, but his solo's are usually pretty basic sounding.
yup, i've always thought mike's solos tend to be based on speed and robotic drumming instead of creativity and groove. he's still an awesome drummer, though.
It's called 'solo' for a reason, dude.
@@johndoe-iq2wu Yeah, and Portnoy sucks at them for a reason
@@gmatsue84 nop. That's technical at its best.
@@johndoe-iq2wu Solo is not "technical performance". A solo is a performance from a single musician. The quality is then not limited to technical skill.
Oh my god that fuckin kit tho......
Looks like it was crafted in heaven.
Mike Portnoy has been around for many years & one of the worlds best drummers! The guy is just amazing!
Mike's long list of Awards include 29 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll Awards including Hall of Fame Inductee in 2004, MVP of the Year in 2010 & 2013, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (for the magazine's record of 13 times), Best Clinician (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year (8 times) for Dream Theater's Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Score, Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare and The Winery Dogs debut. He also holds the distinction being the 2nd youngest drummer ever inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame (while at age 37) and is currently the youngest in the Hall of Fame.
wow such talent. i think he should be a drummer for a band like Dream Theater.
Marco Afro ikr
🤣🤣
Lol
Now in Sons of Apollo. Awesome band!!
That would be SICK lol
Sorry. This video was captured during a photo shoot with Mike. We were not able to mic the drum set. You are hearing the room sound.
Yet another example of when the drums sound good and more importantly when someone knows how to play, mics aren’t an end all be all to a quality product.
Those octobans sound godly though, better than if they were mic'd.
No complaints here. This is crazy awesome. Mike kicked ass for ya' wow. Wish I was there in the room to hear it and feel it. Thanks for making and posting the video and thank you Mike for blowing my mind with your grooves, chops and shredding.
Those drums sound great, especially those small LP specialty toms. Those sound better than many other brands I've heard, the drums as a whole sound really great.
If this video is available to view in 100yrs, it will be like Mozart being listened to in this age!
Mike Portnoy is The Master of Percussion Virtuosity!!!
This Video is the reason why i've become a drummer since 8 Years and i still love watching those incredible skills ❤❤❤❤❤ you changed my life 🎉🎉🎉
I love those mini snare drums. Thomas Lang has one for his foot that seems really useful.
Isn't he basically doing a demo for their products? I doubt he's trying to do the defining solo of his career and he's having a good time.
Look at his face and tell me that man isn't having a good time
Please tell that to all the Idiots saying who's better or who have better technique or faster etc etc .
I mean you’d always try your absolute best, since you’re having fun, holding back is no fun
Wow! First time hearing this guy on acoustic drums! He's incredible! Love the white remo dot he's using on his snare
Portnoy with Mike Mangini are the greatest drummers of all time in Progressive Rock, Mangini holds 5 world records for speed on drums!
You gotta love when musicians are so good that they make it look easy, until you try it. LP makes some of the greatest accessories for drummers and the best ice bells....Awesome video, Thanks!
I feel that as Portnoy evolves as a player, so do his solos. With Dream Theater, he was more precise and more creative with his solos. Seeing that this was done around the time he was in Adrenaline Mob, it's understandable that this one was more straightforward. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it very much, and I love Adrenaline Mob. But with The Winery Dogs, Transatlantic, and all these "proggier" bands he's in now, his solos have been displaying that precision and creativity again.
Awesome !!!!
Every I see this video not only
hear it ,
I see it ,
And
I DANCE !!! 😱😱😱
Mike Mangini is no doubt a better drummer in terms of speed, precision and technique but Portnoy's creativity at writing music is unmatched. Music is all about creativity and thats the reason why I chose Portnoy over any other drummers.
Music ain´t just bout technique and speed and all of this that lotta guys mention here... MUSIC AIN´T SPORT OR COMPETITION!!! He´s not "just a drummer"! He´s much more! HE´S MUSICIAN! He compose songs, he arrange them and he plays drums MUSICALLY!!!
I love this drummer
I wonder if the others from DT (not including Mangini and LeBrie) just look at this like an ex-bird. And think "Oh, yeah". "Why, oh why did I ever leave her?"
He's world class and always was and everything he touches these days, it seems, turns to gold.
I've got to say he's by far my favourite musician on the planet and not just because he plays the music I love but his attitude and what he's been through in life resonates with me.
Never stop Mike.
This was freaking awesome. I'm so taken by the way Mike plays drums so musically. I think He hears sounds and Ideas in his head for drum patterns? So very good!
mike is a Beast on the Drums. can play anything!! Rock On..
I think that the solo is very good, Mike has been a long time inspiration. The key factor here is the sound which is a matter of taste. Note that there are no mics around, which probably means we are listening to what the camera recorded, without much/any sound processing. If this clip had audio quality to match the video, I guess there would be much less dislikes. Anyhow, it's not the drummer's fault that audio is natural and unprocessed.
AAACH......I LOVE SO MUCH MIKE PORTNOY.....MIKE AND NEIL PEART ARE MY FAV DRUMMERS
You are the Only Dude On EARTH who could Sit In For NEIL PEART with RUSH in CONCERT,,,,,and then Some!!!!!! My New Favorite Drummer!!!!!##!!!!!!#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would do ANYTHING to have a kit like that! HOLY SHIT! It must be INSANELY fun to play

It has become a meme now I guess.
I got a fever. And the only prescription is MORE COWBELL
Bob Saget are you the REAL bob saget though
That's Will Ferrell's job
Don fear the repper
I remember this video first came out when I was obsessed with Dream Theater and Portnoy’s playing. Nostalgic af
Love just listening to his drums on room mics.
I don't know why is everybody sayin this was bad. It was unreal.. Amazing solo
It went over their heads. If they think this was bad, they are musically clueless.
Mere words will ultimately fail to give due credit for the superior skills that Mike Portnoy has, and continues to display. A one of a kind drumming expert, at least!
Love that sound. It makes me create ideas when I hear unique drum sound test. 😊
That cymbal.... That's a Sabian AAX. They pack a powerful sound of each cymbals. I really love it. Keep it up, Mike. You can do it, my Idol. 😊
Next level DRUM BEAST mode right there son!
I wish I could drum like him and have his drum set
All these people bashing MP...with or without music...CAN YOU DO ANY BETTER?? I didn't think so. He is a professional for a reason. You can't be perfect every performance. This may have been an off day for him and he still kicked it in the ass. This guy is a beast with a band or by himself. Only reason people are criticizing is because jealousy is blinding them.
Nick Nolte nah definitely no jealousy towards Mike portnoy. Hes a great drummer. Would I put him in with legendary great drummers ..... No. In dream theatre he (and the rest of the band when he was in the band) accomplished one thing.....proving that they're terrible song writers that let their conflicting egos get in the way of writing good songs...aka they're a bunch of look what I can do musicians and they formed the ultimate look what we can do band. There is a reason that since Mike left the band he hasn't been able to find another steady job and that's because of his ego and the way they ran things together while in dream theatre. Sorry Mike (and Mike fans that are gonna rip me for this) but you're a has been.....or since dream theatre never really was that huge in the first place maybe you're a never was....I'm not sure. One of the two though
Just because your professional doesn't mean you have to be good....just need a good backround of the band or bands you have played with ...and baam your sponsored ...
Nick Nolte even if he is a professional, this doesn't change the fact that this was probably the worst drum performance he's done. You're literally telling people that they're wrong for making the critic that you just made.
Nick Nolte - You know what the problem is; People are trying to find grid-tight perfection nowadays, with time corrected recordings and computerized everything. - All there was "off" about this is that it was off-the-cuff. Any inconsistencies in tempo or any hits of the rim or whatever, do not matter because it's improvised. And whenever there's any "error" it puts the OCD-soaked viewers these days totally off because it's not perfect. - But this is nothing but natural and a raw and honest performance. - The same principles count for any performance or craft these days, with drums, guitars, vocals, acting, photographing, drawing, editing, etc. - I see this nitpicking and whining everywhere because people are obsessed with technical perfectionism rather than to enjoy what is being created in front of their faces. - And I'm not blind to quality and such things, I'm actually very critical myself, but... I've also learned to just take a step back and not sit there like a judge but just an audience. - People are un-learning to just be an audience-member, and it's just full of over-analyzing nerds everywhere now. Myself included...
Nick Nolte I certainly agree that all this bashing against MP isn’t necessary, but using the ‘but can you do better’ argument just doesn’t really work. For example a person who couldnt cook could go to a restaurant and have really shit food, just cause he can’t cook doesn’t automatically make his judgement of the food being shit any less valid. Nothing against you, just trying to help inform you :D
THE ALL TIMES GREATEST DRUMMER.
Incomparable
My LOVE for SENSEI MIKE PORTNOY as well.✊🏼🤘🏻🤘🏻👏🏼☝🏻✨🖤🇧🇷
Blown away!!!! This guy is king!! Wow!
This smells so much of Alex Gonzalez, it actually looks like they told him “hey Mike this is Latin so we’ll show you an example of a Latin sound and you try to create from there” there are many parts sounding similar. So good
Although MP is my favorite drummer (and favorite musician, too), I have to admit, that I never enjoyed his solos that much... Except for this one! He´s not doing his "typical MP signature" double-pedal breaks all the time here; he plays cool grooves and stuff like that, too! For me, this is his best one! ;-) Thumbs up!
Mike, you´re an incredible drummer and MUSICIAN, you´ll always be my hero. Thank U for all of your awesome music, which changed my life!
You´re no. 1!!!
There is one thing everyone needs to understand. There is no drummer or musician in this world that is truly 'better" than the other hen it comes to ones with the skill level of Portnoy and such. They all have their own unique style of playing, some are very skilled at certain styles, rhythm, combos, etc. And for some general information, Portnoy and Dream Theater have been around for over 25 years. For him to take a page from anyone would be absurd, he has earned his title as a legend and shall be remembered for a long time to come.
This is just what I needed to start my day. Thanks Mike
Terrific drummer! I want him back in DREAM THEATER
His beats really suck.
Both of you are awful people.
@@jamessudbury6006 You suck
Finaly! Mike got the great band he wanted. He got tired of Dream Theater. You can not decide what Mike should do.
@@michelehovde15 What great band ? Sons of Apollo ?? Hum..their songs are not half as good as D.T's
What a groove! Legend.
Kiril Varbanov groove? hahahah good joke
@@rodrigoacha shut the fuck up, go ahead, try and play this, right you can’t.
years has pass since he left DT.... now i feel happy that he is not in the band anymore. I feel him more happy and he is still on THE scene. Love MP
Great drum solo Mike Portnoy is one of my favorite drummers and one of my biggest influences on drums
Just positive critical, that would be better if u put full a set of professional Mic recording before Mike play solo..
I agree with that.. I think its just the camera mic they are using

Mike and Mark Zonder...two of the best of all time.
このドラムセット好きだわ〜😍✨
This may not be a technical, but it's sure very pleasing to the ears.
LOL, what?
Freestyle is a different animal than composition. You can't argue he's a good drummer. No, he's not the best. But does a person need to be the best in order to have fun and be successful? Liked? He's making a living at doing what he loves. There it is.
Man, this dude's a ROCKSTAR!
Some of this really reminds me of the guys in Godsmack (back like 10 years ago anyway). Shows how much Portnoy was probably also an inspiration to them.
He speeds the pattern RLRLKK up really fast. It's his signature fill! (:
how the fuck did they record this with no mic? :)
Drums are loud.
here, take my upvote sir
Guido Cioni nice to see someone not react badly when i'm being a smartass
Guido Cioni But in all seriousness, they probably did use mics. From the looks of the room he was in, the room probably had some amazing acoustics. Also, at some points of the video, you can see some black stands off of the side of the drums which probably held some mics above the set.
Guido Cioni This video was taken from a photo shoot. We were only able to capture the room sound. The black stands you see are camera tripods.
Cool guy, great drummer, amazing performer, big influence for 1000000s of young drummers, and by the way great sounding set here ;))) Mike is just GREATTTT
Best solo drum performance from him, it's been quite some time watching him doing some solo for some time
He should release a solo album. maybe he could do an hour long drum epic and try to tell stories with percussion. people have done it with guitars.
unreal how smooth he plays. it's like its nothin
Mike can play anything anywhere
Really enjoy Mr Portnoys stuff, helps fill the void left by Mr Peart.
This sounds like an entire marching band playing and it's just one man!
I forgot I had it on 1.5x speed and was like wtf when did he get THAT fast??!??!
This man born with a drumstick already on his hand 🔥
Those signature Portnoy rolls. Perfection
mike portnoy and dave lombardo make me want to become a drummer!!!
How about Mike Magini
4:20 Ah! Thanks for that shot. I really wanted to know what he was playing on the bass drum
The amount of things he can hit sequentially at such speed blows my mind
MP is one of the best...LOVE the clear acrylic kit!!!!!
6:46 - so THAT'S his secret! A hidden third arm!
He makes it look so easy D:
+Max DC oh yeah it's easy to suck. Not too easy to do what Mikes doing though.
I could literally find a million drummers that are in high school that are better than Mike.
+Max DC You do that and get back to us.
+Max DC that in no way makes him suck.
I remember when I had only been playing drums for a few years and would have thought this was ultimate drumming too haha. Mike is good , could even be considered great , but he doesn't drum outside of rock grooves (from videos I've seen) and for me that is why he is equal a high schooler . I'm not trying to take away from his rudiments or technique or how 'clean' he sounds but the grooves he uses them with is boring
mike is amazing in drummer coz he can play all of the genres. all of the members of the dream theatre are amazing!
To all haters: I'd be willing to bet his manager is just like "wanna mess around on this kit for a while? Make a few thousand on the video?" And Mike just went "why not?" He's not being a try hard in this video; just messing around because when you're a world class drummer, you have that luxury.
close your eyes and you picture yourself trying to test out the feel of a pair of drumsticks at guitar center, but some fuck found the double pedal on one of the demo sets and won't leave until you recognize his "stellar" playing
+mtndewman1022 yeah, portnoy can't play shit. it sounds like the typical high school drummer playing his new double pedals that he got for christmas and just figured out the "R L R K K" fill.
+Matti Siik (M4Z4) you can't play shit. You may eat shit.
+Matti Siik (M4Z4) that's exactly what I was thinking
You're a shithead.
He is a band-drummer, not a solo-artist.. his strengh is not to play insane soli, but play insanely good with other musicans and he also got great ideas for songs
I saw this cats drum clinic at a small music store in Lawton, Oklahoma in early 2000. I was so close to greatness I wished I chatted with him. He checked me out as I had med long brown hair and leather jacket lol.
For those of yall saying he sucks etc. Do realize he's advertising for LP and less focused on soloing. It'd be different story if he wasn't completely focused on advertising
His dynamics
He has his own sound on any drumset that he plays
I’ll be able to see him performing with this acrylic setup tomorrow wit the Winfrey Dogs in Ct yyyayyy
didnt know you could give such an amazing performance with drums only
its so smooth and perfect
Are those drum shells made of acrylic? That was an impressive solo, not to mention what an amazing array of cymbals in that kit. He must have every kind of crash, ride, splash and china cymbal that Sabian makes in his kit, or so it seems. The only kit I've seen more awesome that is Terry Bozzio's, and that kit is a frigging monster!
6672rock Yes they are. It's a material called "Acrylite"!!! It's a chemical-polymer that's manufactured and can be made in ANY shape, size or color You want!!! It's an EXTREMELY durable polymer, hence why drums are made out of it!!! Lol. It's the same thing John Bonham's early 70's kit was made out of too.
+menom7 That is an interesting plate of information (at least for me).
Ignored it's name and, credits for playing such polymer. For a moment I thought about a 3D printed drumset. How would such a kit sounds like? Thanks for sharing that info!
+Jose Miguel Iglesias It's MY pleasure Jose!!! Was glad to share the info. here.
menom7 Here, there and elsewhere that may be ignored. Personally, I think this set sounds and looks way cooler than that of Bonham's.
My personnal favourites would be Bruford and Bozzio though. Cheers!
+Jose Miguel Iglesias Oh,I completely agree with You on THAT one!!! (that his set looks and sounds cooler than Bonham's)........OF COURSE,in actuality,is simply a matter of "personal-preference" in both HOW You want your drums to LOOK,and HOW You want your drums to SOUND!!! For I've seen sets that LOOK cool as HELL...........but when I sat down at them, and played em,they simply did not SOUND good at all!!! Also,I've HEARD AWESOME sounding drums TOO,but when You LOOKED at em and saw the "condition" of em,they were pretty sad to look at!!! Lol. Point BEING,is that it's NOT so much WHAT your drums LOOK LIKE,or HOW MANY or FEW You have, but ANY SET whether BIG or SMALL,made of WOOD or Acrylics, can SOUND GREAT if you simply take the time to "TUNE" them properly!!! And YES,Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio's sets, are AMAZING in both SOUND and APPEARANCE!!! Thanks for your post!!!

One of the very few who have a similar style to Neil Peart. Very much alike. You can hear the style in YYZ by Rush, it’s very cool.
I did not know Mike Portnoy before but form what I just saw here, he is the Steve Vai of drumming to me.
I did not know Steve Vai before but from what I just read here, he is the Yngwie Malmsteen of whatever he does.

Wow wow for a moment I thought it was a Latino drummer, and then I realized it was Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater bro! The best Latin drummer I've heard so far, the same Latin feeling and with many touches of English and some kind of other unknown species of cuisine.
