    Get answers to questions like these:
    Why review this GT-1000CORE simulator?
    What is special about the hardware features?
    Is this gt-1000CORE well made?
    How does this effects unit sound?
    So what is the software like?
    What is the review score?
    Did you actually buy this guitar pedal?
    Can this effects board unit be classed as a bargain?
    Is this GT-1000CORE under review a retail unit?
    The Boss GT-1000 came out a while back and is their top of the line guitar effects and amp simulator pedal. But there is a trend to get smaller units that can be fitted on to an effects board and other companies like Line6 and Fractal Audio among others are all in on the act. So is Roland Boss too late to the party? And can this unit (complete with a mono screen) compete with other similarly priced or lower cost units with similar specifications on offer?
    There is no doubt that Boss make some very good equipment indeed, and inside this review I show you EXACTLY how good this unit really is. I discuss the aspects of input and output and whether the limited control affects the unit. I also discuss the software and show that as well as at least ten audio examples in this review. Lastly I conclude with the good and less good points as well as the final score for the unit.
    The GT-1000CORE also has the ability to load IR's in to the unit with included software as well as AIRD features and software to achieve exactly the tone and 'feel' of the simulations that you really want. It's a flexible unit that should go far.
    NOTE: The audio in this video was recorded in Studio One direct through a Studio Live 32 desk with NO OTHER ENHANCEMENTS whatsoever to the audio. The presets used in the final audio track included:
    * P001 Premium Drive
    * P032 Warp Lead
    * P060 Vintage Vibe
    * P105 X-Hi Gain Lead
    On the presets I had to back off the reverb level in the total out settings as usual it was way too high. Every single tone is exactly what you would get by using this GT-1000 core device.
    You might like to know that there were no amplifiers, speakers, microphones or anything else other than what was 'inside' the GT-1000CORE. It was a massive improvement over the original GT-1000 I reviewed some while back.
    Lastly, The Stratocaster used is a guitar that I call the 'Best Fender Strat in the world' and there is a video all about that guitar on RUclips on my channel here: • Best Fender Strat guit... That video has over 1.4 million views - this guitar looks 'ordinary' but it is far from that! Watch that video to learn about it's secret.

      Ah the GT-10 - pretty cool at the time :) but the GT-100 hit that one hard :). I specifically open up the gear because while sound is obviously important and critical for most guitarists, whether the item has longevity with safety built in is just as important. No use sounding great if they fail every other gig I always thought. As far as channels go, what I see is that they fall generally in to a few categories... 1: Dealer promoting gear (sales videos), 2: fake reviews (really sales videos), 3: Guitarists making a review (usually only playing), 4: Unadulterated money makers ( make reviews from free gear - really sales videos). I find there are really not that many guys out there that do make in depth video reviews and that's because of how they work with/or get paid some sort of revenue for the review and would NEVER tell you the points that are not commensurate with sales. Me? I don't get paid by any maker, I buy everything I review and I will always point out my opinion in a genuine and checkable way - and inside the unit and safety standards are always part of my reviews. Some people dislike that - especially makers :). Thanks for sticking with my channel... it grows slowly, but most subscribers like how I review. Stay safe too.

      That's an 'old' track again from around 1993 and is called wild turkey. The track was never released to anywhere so I used that as I'm getting idle :) The original with the original guitar when I wrote it was better for sure but it has a sort of 60's vibe to my ears. Glad you liked it anyway and thanks for watching. Regarding rehearsals I don't do so much currently but should. I have been thinking of writing some new stuff but that motivation is hard... difficult times at work and that sort of thing and getting my mind where it should be for that is harder in this climate for sure. Stay safe.

    Hi Tony. Great review. I learned that it is very important to know what's inside the units. For example a point to point connected amp circuit is easier to fix than a printed circuit board one. And I think that in this unit the level of miniaturization makes practically impossible to fix such a complex unit. You take the time to show everything inside and I appreciate that. Thanks!

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Antonio (I'm nearly one of them :) it's appreciated. I try and create inside and out reviews when I can because you can sometimes see the things that are shabby or created down to a price and that sort of thing. Also as you say, the complexity if something does go wrong... and that always makes me think about warranty then. Its all sort of stuck together and when makers offer just one year warranty, and others offer say three or five years for free then that is very telling and should be highlighted. Other reviewers don't do this stuff because they (I guess) don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. In my case they certainly don't feed me - I buy the gear - the only way and anything else is either sales tittle tattle or fake reviews. Thanks for watching these... they always take me much time effort and every one costs me for the gear. Stay safe.

    I liked your review and especially the look inside the pedal. I have the old boss gt100 and running that into the effects return of my tube vht special 6 ultra is very nice. Many times though, I just plug straight into my amp without any pedals and be contempt. Tubes for life :)

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      :) Oh I agree... tube amps remain simply, easier to use, better sounding and with a better 'feel' while playing I think. These simulators do have a place but I tend to use the effects lots more than the simulators. IR's are getting everywhere - even in the new Mesa Boogie Badlands (read Rectifier) amps which seems sacrilege somehow as that amp will sound fine through most speaker setup's really. And with the DAW stuff most guys would already have the IR's and/or speaker sims in there. The GT-100 has been a mainstay of guitar guys for years and I remember reviewing that at the time here: ruclips.net/video/sGN9Sx1-Z-c/видео.html and it was a surprisingly good floor unit. Compared to the Line6 HD500 it was IMO far better. Scarily I reviewed the GT-100 in 2012! Stay safe.

      I was surprised about this unit really. It was built brilliantly, has the software if you like that sort of thing and has pretty reasonable to good sounds in general. When I look at competitive gear though most (if not all) have colour screens and that sort of thing and cost less and I don't think they would be light years from the tones either. It's still a very good unit of course, but the GT-1000 is really a better buy if you need control. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

    Great review Tony, almost bought one last week, luckily caught you're heads up preview that you were indeed working on a review. Really balanced review and honest in your assessments as always. The compact size is a big plus but at the cost of significant control comprises - all dependent of course on intended use. I'd use this primarily as a studio box of tricks at home (with my good old Tascam recorder, non-PC DAW user) so the lack of switching would not really be an issue. For a live rig, I'd use it as mod / delay fx only with maybe a drive or two in the loops. Boss have loaded it with the full fat, which is commendable as I'm sure many will want the amp / cab sims etc, but equally for a small unit with professional fx that will see you right for a decade or more going forward, I'm actually still very tempted and may just include a note on my letter to santa!
    Thanks again Tony 👍

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      This unit would work well for you with the studio thing... I literally plugged in and chose pre-sets even and there they are on the video! I used just two on the final track with the strat and they sounded fine to me... that is usually a mistake to use pre-sets, but not on this unit. I also stayed with the default 'speaker' and did not even bother with the IR stuff particularly so it could only get better. Just FYI I use a Helix rack NOT through the DAW in the usual way but from the analogue outs to the desk and that's because I have the JVM410HJS Marshall in a 4 cable method at the Helix. The quality of the tones in this GT-1000CORE were substantially better than when I reviewed the GT-1000 when it first came out (maybe one of the problems of reviewing these type of units early) but this unit was light years from that time, so its likely that the GT-1000 improved massively. It's good to see that they got there in the end. I doubt you would be disappointed in this unit for the use you mention - and that is very similar to the way I will use it too. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

    Thank you so much for your reviews! It is very important that you show what is inside the devices, please continue this practice, although not everyone needs it. I am always dissatisfied with the standard configurations of the equipment and always strive to redo something, and it is usually quite difficult to find before the purchase how the device is made inside and whether it will be possible to carry out the intended modification.
    I'm thinking about embedding a XLR-connector and a microphone preamp, which I will connect to one of the inputs.
    You shouldn't think that this device is completely pointless. There are people who want to have the GT1000 software capabilities, but do not need the ability to control a full-fledged pedalboard. For example, my dream is a sound card with hardware guitar effects and necessarily an expression pedal. With such a desire, all the usual sound cards discarded and only the guitar processors themselves remain, but to perch the GT-1000 or Helix on the table is absolutely madness =) GT-1000Сore or HX Stomp are almost perfect as a sound card, but they lack a microphone preamp :(
    Still, not everything got into the camera, tell me whether the XLR socket will fit between the internal boards, or will you have to limit yourself to a large jack?

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and the post. Honestly I have not been back to the inside of this unit since the review so as to what is inside this is just about the only video out there showing what is there. Study the video and you should be able to work it all out. The GT1000CORE certainly has its benefits compared to some devices like the POD GO which I am working on currently. Thanks again and stay safe.

    Really love the way you explained this unit. Came here and watched almost the whole thing 😊👍🏻 I‘ve the GT-1000 and also the MD-500 & DD-500...but what I really would like to see from Roland/Boss is a good old Roland 80ies GP-8 style 19“ Rack Unit. With ONLY the Effects of the 500 series (no Ampmods etc.) I think there‘s still a market for Rack Units. 🎸

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Aha I have a DD-500 too :) Glad you liked this video - they take much time to create like this rather than just a quick cursory look like many do. I still use rack stuff too, but in recent times I updated the whole rack to Helix rack - you can watch that here: ruclips.net/video/HJHCG0k_oTY/видео.html and you can see the 'old' stuff I used to use too. Roland Boss don't do much rack (if any) these days but I still get along with the rack stuff... problem is you're probably in the minority (like me) in reality. I do think that the rise and rise of the pedal is an engineered view by the music gear sector to sell the same thing 1000 times over ranging from really cheap to ridiculous prices. Whereas an effects rack does the lot and they can't sell you more. Just an opinion of course, but scary how expensive some of that stuff is. Thanks and stay safe.

    Good review..but I disagree with your rating..why???..I have owned the majority of the modelers out there..Headrush, Mooer, Helix, etc..I own a Kemper Floor but that is in it's own league..I have found that the GT1000 does what it is supposed to do-sound great through a FRFR speaker..with all the others I have had to EQ to cut low/high end to make them sound good. For me the GT1000 is the easiest to get great sounds out of right out of the box, it's a keeper.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  2 года назад +5

      Indeed it IS a great device... but some of the things like older interface things never matter - until they do and when they do THEN it might be a different story. I have also tried near enough all of the simulators too. The GT-1000 when it came out was (I have to say) awful and the tones were rubbish. It has improved of course but my original review of that unit did tell it the way it really was at the time. I rapidly sold that unit. The GT-1000CORE out of the box sounded considerably better than the GT-1000 (AT LAUNCH) otherwise I can honestly say that I would have said that, the CORE is different even at launch. But then again my guess is that after the GT-1000 was launched that they did some fair work to get it better than where it was. Today they both sound pretty good IMO. FYI as I said the GT-1000 was sold instantly while in fact I still own the GT-1000CORE and will likely keep it. On the EQ front as you mentioned it, the GT-1000 launch unit had to have extensive EQ (global and local) changes to even make it sound pretty average at the time. I honestly wanted the GT-1000 to be good when I reviewed it and I was very disappointed about that unit in the review, but it did improve quite a lot. I remember the Satriani patch particularly as being pretty unusable on the original OS... and I tried every way there was (its all in the review if I remember correctly) to get a good sound and I never really did. But that was then and this is now :). Hey thanks for watching and great post and I thought I should mention some of my reasoning involved.

  • @gcvrsa
    @gcvrsa 2 года назад +2

    I've just finally taken delivery of a GT-1000Core, and i have a few things to say in regard to Tony's opinions here. First of all, let me say that what initially interested me in the GT-1000 was when they released the Version 3 firmware with all the bass guitar specific updates. You see, I have been using an all Boss compact pedal setup for bass, in two vintage BCB-3 boxes, and when I saw the GT-1000, I quickly did the math and realised that the GT-1000 actually costs less than my 6 Boss compact pedals, at new replacement prices.
    Second, I have always wanted the MD-500/DD-500/RV-500 trio, but the three of them together take up an immense amount of real estate. When I saw the GT-1000Core, I knew it was exactly the right product for me. I don't want and don't need the full GT-1000 layout. The three switches on the the Core are enough for me. When used for bass, half of my pedals are "always on" so the Core alone can replace my entire bass pedal board without any compromise save for it then being a single point of failure. I lose absolutely nothing in terms of sound quality, since the algorithms in the Core are the exact same ones in the pedals I'm currently using.
    The smaller size of the Core means it can be integrated into my existing guitar board (which until this week had no Boss pedals) in a way that is impossible for the full size GT-1000. Although the 500 series trio actually offers more capabilities and more algorithms for modulation, delay, and reverb than the GT-1000Core, the Core offers enough algorithms for my tastes, so it is capable of doing everything for me that the 500 series trio would have done, but takes up 1/3 the amount of space, and also adds the ability to simultaneously access effects that the 500 series trio doesn't contain.
    And again, if I really wanted to, the Core could pretty much replace my entire guitar board. The three footswitches would control delay on/off, modulation on/off, and drive on/off. Even if I added an FS-7 to get two more footswitches, the whole lot still fits into a single BCB-30X box, which is substantially smaller than the GT-1000. I've never used a treadle in my playing, so I won't miss it.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  2 года назад +1

      Most of this post I am agreeing with... while I did not test out the bass aspect of the GT1000CORE, I did test most stuff on it. The earlier GT1000 when it first came out I could not get decent sounds from... and neither could two other guys both very good guitarists. But that changed for the GT1000 later when they actually released software and firmware that worked! However, there is a point I want to make about the GT-1000CORE... and here it is... I STILL own it. I have tried, reviewed and used most 'in the range' and even much higher cost devices with this or that difference or tone difference etc. For me, one of the deciders is that there can be up to 24 blocks in total and many other units are far from that ability. The sounds are pretty good too. I do own a Helix rack that is very good, but that's a big unit, but the GT-1000CORE has a lot to offer to anyone who uses a pedal board and gigs, but not just that of course. We all have our own little 'likes' and 'hates' about most gear and I did mention mine, no on off switch is a pain and the 'old' I/O port and midi connector is not really what I would expect... but of course other guys might like it like that. Good points on your post and if you're gigging its a good choice and if you're studio like me, then my few frustrations might be yours. Thanks for the post and for watching.

    I love your in depth reviews, I must be getting old, but there's just too much going on in these modern FX units. I have the HX Stomp and after faffing around with it for a year, I now only use just one Amp model with a stock cab ( Not an I.R ), a few drives and basic Reverb / delay. Now I couldn't be happier. Got the idea from Chris Bucks video on the full Helix. He only uses one patch. Hilarious. You're right, Midi is not easy. It would be nice if Boss / Roland or Line 6 could provide a simple add on external foot switch that's easy to program ( like the Katana footswitch ). Digitech used to do one for the GSP1101 which was perfect. Is it ever going to end......haha. Anyway, keep up the good work. No one shows as much detail as you. Great stuff.

      Old... you and me too! I am very similar in reality. People often criticise the internal speaker emulators and the IR's do certainly sculpt the tones, but... its that messing around that is a pain. NO-ONE would check the tens of thousands of IR's out there these days and me? I tend to believe that the IR sellers always say the internal speaker sim is 'cr*p' because it would affect sales. But who am I to be so cynical. The MIDI on this is exemplary in that it covers all settings and scenarios. The caveat is that a 39 page manual is an excessive amount to ask users to just trip through just like that. The idea of a pedal like you describe is a very good idea IMO and I don't really see any aimed at these lower end units... but a good point. Scarily, on the Helix rack I have the patches are similarly scarce and I can easily see how Chris would do that - you can near enough do it all on one patch and eight 'snapshots' as they call them. That fact that you pointed out is not really as silly as you might think - and many would baulk at that idea. But I have believed for a long time that the complexity is a turn off from making the music that we all want to make and just 'another hurdle' while simplicity is always king. Great point... and stay safe. Thanks for watching.

Mr Tony is correct, I’m not gonna go through thousands of IR’s haha. I feel like menu diving is part of the practice regimen now lol.

    The gt-1000 (core) does not contain all effects of the 500 series.
    Trails when switching from room to plate reverb?
    Dimension chorus or Univibe?
    User patterns for pattern delay?
    All the "special" algorithms from the RV and DD 500?
    Space Echo 5 selectable head options vs 12 on the DD 500.
    Boss was clever enough to give you a reason to still buy the 500 series even If you got the gt-1000.
    But, of course, for most of us the gt-1000 is completely sufficient .

    Great review! I must say, the smaller size is why I bought this unit. I own the Helix and it’s way too huge, especially when you have to carry a spare. Remember, you don’t need as many buttons and things because of midi automation; all the switching happens automatically for the show with no toe dancing. 🤘

    Nice review as always. I will say one thing about it. NEVER have I heard such usable Factory presets as THIS. All of those were more than usable right out of the Box, at least someone could be playing the unit immediately. All these UNITS have learning curves to making them even comfortable with, it just goes with that particular terrain. I am still shopping on these smaller units, if size is no consideration I would just stick with the Tonelab SE vox/korg unit I already have, it does all I could need, only a couple of the factory presets though were usable out of the box. But the learning curve was done in a couple of uses, using the manual, including reading what the diff. amps actually ARE/were in the unit. I have been looking for something smaller as the VOX is a Surfboard to say the least, ok for if I was in a Regular band but I am not currently. Wish Tony would have at least spent a bit more time trying a couple of the TONEX pedals presets, but others have done that part of it quite well. OH, the Tweed preset he did in the Samples section to my ears sounded more like a Blackface or must be modelled after maybe a more modern boutique tweed style, it did not to my ears sound like a 50's Deluxe, Maybe they put it thru a 4x12 cab. which beefed it up, vs. a stock 1 speaker jensen. This Boss unit for the Price seems very GOOD.

    Recently found you on RUclips and enjoying your stuff Tony. It's a pedal board accompaniment basically. Costs too much to be stand alone unit for your average bedroom player. Funnily enough when a click on your reviews, you tube plays me an advert for the Spark amp from your mates at positive grid lol.

      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Ha positive grid huh... I notice now that they can't give them away and are emailing many... even me! But I won't go back there so best of luck to them. Yes I agree it IS a pedal board sort of thing for sure, but the unit IMO is compromised a little. It sounds OK to me (but it's no real amp for sure) and has loads of effects and some really good ones. But there are other units out these days that are not a million miles away, maybe in some cases less flexible etc. but still competition for the CORE. And at the price it is, its not that far from the GT-1000 which can be bought for not that much more without those compromises on this unit. I guess if the size is critical then this could be a pretty useful device even with the control limitations that were introduced by the size of the unit. It's rally well made though. Stay safe.

    I appreciate you getting in depth with this unit. I haven't jumped into a purchase as of yet, comparing this actually to the Pod go. The (only) benefit I see to owning the Core 1000 is the dual amp capability. That's about all.

      No midi on the POD-GO and on a small unit for floor board that might matter? It's certainly cheaper than the Roland Boss. I like the Pod-go and most Line6 gear (but not the older stuff from Line6 (remember the HD500). Dual paths are missing as I understand it and not just 'dual amps'. The Pod-Go is a more budget unit and there's nothing wrong with that for sure. BTW I'm not saying one is better or worse than the other, but better to consider the differences for any specific application. What might be good for me might not be good for other guys of course. But interesting points for sure... stay safe and thanks for watching.

      I returned my POD Go and am getting a GT-1000 CORE. The tones on the POD Go were high quality but so is Boss and the GT-1000 CORE has way, WAY more features and horsepower. Many more effects, better customization, parallel paths, MIDI, two effects loops, etc. Honestly the only thing the POD Go has that I don't think the GT-1000 CORE doesn't is color coded footswitch LED's.

    Hi Tony, thanks again for the in-depth review. I‘ve had the GT-100, sold that, purchased the Headrush. I sold the HR after a year due to the fact that just before a gig it decided get a mind of its own and dump all of my stored sets. I just don‘t trust these things anymore and decided to also go back to analog pedals which are, in my mind, pretty trustworthy. No updates, no nothing. Plug it in, get your sound and it always works. Also, if you have a good amp that you’re happy with why would you want to change that sound with an IR? I guess what would be best is just bringen g it to a gig and go straight into the house board. That is if all the electronics work. Thanks again Tony.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Did you mean the GT-1000 (or was it the GT-100?) I did try the Headrush a while back but decided not to buy it because at the time it did not sound that good (inside a GC). I need no conversion to real tube amps at all! And I certainly agree on the opinion you have re those and sound (and indeed the feel when using those amps). I think like this (just a personal view and not really opinioned in this review) that I have difficulty in understanding how ANY COMPANY can continually make amp simulators that firstly do NOT sound or feel like the real amp does, and secondly, continue after patch and update after update surrounded by often thousands of 'IR's' that no one will ever work through then go on to FAIL and not be the same sound or feel that the real amp really is.
      And there's more - in many cases, I could buy a tube amp for even as little as a couple of hundred pounds or dollars and end up with a real tube amp sound that is actually better than the equivalent simulation. I do rate the effects side of things though, but again you are right IMO in so much as it just makes things harder to manage and surrounds guitar playing with self facing complexity that often proves to be the downfall of the simulator in one way or another. Some of your views might be different and that's OK but since 2011 when I first used an amp 'simulator' and nearly every other one since that is basically what I believe. The sims are 'OK' and some guys love them, but you know what, sit ANY of those guys with a decent guitar in front of my Marshall Plexi JMP100HW head as I have it set up here and they would highly likely then realize what real sound and feel is actually like. It seems that many guys never really experienced that sort of thing. Even with it's reactive load the result is incredible.
      Of course regular pedals keep users sane :) and that's one of the big advantages for those. Stay safe.

      @gilmarriner3011 3 года назад

      Hi Tony, it was a GT-100 and some, or most of the patches included I found practically unusable. Especially going into the front of the amp. After a year or so I got a chance to play a friends 100w plexi and was just blown away! Just the air pushing alone was an experience. Nothing the GT could get close to. I‘ll stay with my tube amp and analog pedals anytime and I don’t have time to tweak the thousands of effects that they produce.

      Actually I have a friend that really likes the GT-100 - its getting on these days of course, but at the time I reviewed the GT-1000 in fact he was the guy that said his GT-100 sounded better! It was interesting when the GT-100 came out of course but that was many years ago now. I also voiced my opinions on the pre-sets in the GT-100 in my review (on my channel) as many were far too effected and the drive sounds not that great. They were always good on the clean chorus stuff :) as indeed even this GT-1000CORE is today. I like the real amps too, although this sort of kit has it's place it can soon become overly complex in most brands really unless you like playing with computers :). Yeah a decent wah, delay, a bit of reverb on a decent amp is all I need.. the way it has been for a very long time really.

    I got it because of the size. I can put it in the back of my JC40 and cary out in one trip. The full board is way too big.. waaaaay to big. Now could they have squeezed a couple more switches double decker style. Yeah. They could have. And probably should have. But do I need it? Not really, Im a simple guy. I just wanted to shrink my rig, and still get what Ive got. And this with the JC40 does the job. I dont use amp sims unless Im recording. But I still prefer a dry signal an reamping. So yeah I just took my pedalboard and put it all in one box. Thats all I wanted really, and it does sound great and does what I need considering some pedals cost 300 USD on its own. The problem is of course, there is so much stuff to try and go through to even get anything on video... and I did not go and check what they said - silly me :) Ha you might think I would trust the info out there :( but alas not so. Did you have the GT-1000 long? I reviewed it when it first came out and at that time honestly it was not very good sounding - I blame the very early firmware myself. There were three guys here that tried it and I remember backing off the eq and reverb on the global settings (I think it was) to make the 'Satch' pre-set sound even reasonable. But on this CORE the sounds are much better than I remember on the GT-1000 which makes me think it all got better later... so any comments I would love to hear... the GT-1000 is also a very well made unit. I watched this review before buying a GT-1000 Core a few years ago!
    I think bang for your buck it’s the best small (3 switch kinda format) modeler out there.
    But some caveats. I agree the control on the face is lacking. You can assign the knobs to the useful functions you’ll need but that is an extra task when making your presets. It’s relatively difficult to make needed adjustments on the fly.
    Also I do a lot of editing from the face of the unit so I know this isn’t from lack of practice. And because I do so much editing the main selection knob you can certainly feel has a bit of wear on it. Not as crisp of clicks as when it was new so I’m worried it may not last if I keep editing with the unit, so I made a choice of switching to the desktop editor whenever possible.
    But I’ve gotten GREAT use out of this thing. I run a crazy signal chain that I know cannot be replicated on comparable modelers. Neither in its price range nor with this small of a footprint. Despite its flaws there is not a single unit that can directly replace it.
    For that reason I’d argue not a 7 but an 8/10.

    I think its small foot print could shine on a pedal-board with other pedals. For instance, you may have a couple of favourite drive pedals that you could put in the loops. You could then use the unit to switch from clean/dirty sounds with associated changes of EQ and reverb etc.. I have a similar set up with the three buttons set for: clean/dirty, post boost and delay. With space on the board for other pedals and an expression pedal. You also the have the option of adding presets for specific songs/sounds that you may not be able to otherwise create and that may only need little control during live performance. The GT-1000 is more for an all in one solution where adding other pedals could become cumbersome.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Exactly I agree re the size and pedal boards of course. There is no doubt that it could shine on a board. You can add other pedals to the GT-1000 though? But like you say for a pedal board it will work I'm sure. I don't really use pedal boards and I originally came from single effects, to rack stuff etc. and the 'want' to create a pedal board was not there for me because the likes of the GCX switchers took the rack much further back then. The idea of loads of pedals on boards these days is of course commonplace, but I honestly have always questioned the mentality of paying up to 30 times more for single box units that create aggravation through connections and power needs. :) Ha this little unit as I said in the review 'does away' with the three 500 series Boss pedals right from the off thus eliminating all external aggro. Good points of course and for pedal boards this unit is cool. If you don't need the size particularly the GT-1000 is IMO a better value though. Thanks Mr JB :) and Stay safe.

    After years of reading information on guitar multi effects modelers, i discovered that the latency of the Boss GT-1000 is 0.2 milliseconds behind a real analog tube amplifier. With a tube amplifier sounding off at 7.983 milliseconds behind the strike of a string making that snappy interaction we have between the guitar & the amplifier. Nothing comes as close to this interaction as the Boss GT-1000 does, Boss nailed it with their circuitry. I also discovered that stacking processors slows down the initial computational rates to dump information to memory which affects latency issues. The quad core processors that were tested were milliseconds behind the Boss GT-1000 which tells me that technological upgrades have to be made to dual core & quad core processors to speed up calculation & memory dumps on higher algorithms. Right now it seems like they are sacrificing speed for better sounding algorithms, even high powered PC Plug-ins are are facing latency issues because of this. Especially with patches that change your octave from what i understand. Thank you Tony with all of your help that you've given me to help aid the modeler debate , i think i'm just going to play it safe with a 5 year warranty from Guitar Center on a Boss GT-1000 as a long-term investment. I am just waiting to see latency results on the Neural DSP Quad Cortex to see if things have improved first. I doubt i'll buy something at that price without a 5 year warranty though, it might be some time before Guitar Center carries something to this equivalency :)

      This is a great post and interesting for sure. The processor(s) in this unit is custom and sparse on info for sure - I found out bits n pieces but no groundbreaking info. I always look at the processor of the unit because (as you infer really) the speed and the sound are really two different things. While the power can handle many 'blocks' (this one handles 24 if I remember correctly), the sound is another thing. This did 'feel' reasonable when I played it... but I could still tell that 'feel' as per a tube amp was slightly lacking as it seems to be in general. The DSP Quad Cortex might change all that - I see it's doing the rounds currently. Maybe I'll get to it one of these times and complete an inside and out of that unit which might be interesting. 5 year warranty IS good and you know I always look at warranties because a one year term is maybe a good indicator of what makers know and we don't :). Thanks for watching and for this post which I think is really good. Stay safe too...

      @@tonymckenziecom You're absolutely right about the Neural DSP Quad Cortex being able to achieve certain textual responses more like the tube amp than over the Boss. I think they will only be able to take their MDP processing so far with a 32-bit engine, however looking at the software improvements Roland has made to their algorithms in the last three years has impressed me with the level of quality they provide. The Andy James patches were studio quality effects just to show the effort of detail you that you could achieve with it. It really does come down to feeling & response to produce the desired effect out of your instruments, what do you think about the Boss as a future investment for professional recording? Sorry to take up your time Tony, i just wanted to know your honest opinion about it... :)

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +3

      Yes the 'feel' and 'tone' IMO drive the player and then the player will be inspired to write great stuff. Either one 'off' in some way seems to make gear an 'also ran' and there's lots of it. Andy James - I have not tried those but I guarantee they won't make me sound like him :) He's a brilliant player and makes ANYTHING sound good.
      When you're talking about Boss for recording that covers a very wide spectrum of products? You probably mean the simulated gear right? Well the thing about Boss is that they are big enough to create their own technology and chips etc. and a company like that will not fail. They have good software developers too and there is no doubt that the drive to get that technology down to a manageable price is there... this little unit confirms that really.
      I tried the GT-1000 originally and I was very disappointed at the time. I should have waited while they 'fixed' the thing, firmware and software. It is better now though from what I see. Roland Boss have the 'clout' to be the king of this sector and every product they release they gain or learn just a bit more. I like Kemper (for the sound and feel) and although some knock the Helix, it works well for me in a rack as an effects unit really with a real tube amp.
      Trouble is with it all, it all moves on at the rate of technology, and I've been in that sector since 81 - no one wants yesterdays products and it's the same really with simulators. I remain surprised that Kemper has managed to have a 10 year run on what is basically a dinosaur compared to the latest modern gear :) In any case I assume you meant the Boss simulators... :) but it could also be about amps and other stuff... stay safe.

    • @jasonmuntner4911
      @jasonmuntner4911 3 года назад

      @@tonymckenziecom Absolutely friend :) You stay safe as well._. The Kemper is history, might as put it in the Smithsonian. The Quad Cortex records sounds at higher fidelity, plus being able to record distortion pedals & later they are going to introduce effects pedals as well. Can't wait to see the endless possibilities of the device. Unfortunately this means that this is one step closer to putting the nails in the coffin for real amplifiers. The kHz range that you can get from amp speakers cannot be replaced by FRFR or monitor PA speakers. Gotta have the correct frequency response, plus the even harmonics of tubes versus odd harmonics of solid-state amps etceteras.. My only problem is that you are forced to use the PC or I-pad with midi to control the device if the touch screen technology breaks on you, they need buttons on that box. Same with todays cellphones missing numerical buttons, if go blind from blood building behind your eyes from a stroke you cannot call 911 without seeing the touch screen interface. Not to get off subject...

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      Ah but lest you forget... what about that 'heat' to warm the studios with :) Honestly it IS a feature :) I am surprised that Kemper have not released a new unit and I could bet its behind the scenes. I did not know about the effects pedals so thanks for that. Well I agree on the PC or iPad etc (don't forget the tiny phone screen!) can and often IS a pain. Most touch screen stuff is hard work... I see that in what I do today and while it does work its all pretty dire. I find that on some of it that it is very over complex, and I think that's trying to compensate in so many areas for tones that are not perfect. Just imagine if there was a unit that really DOES sound the same as a real tube amp and 'feels' the same too and it has half a dozen buttons on it just like a tube amp. Another consideration of course is that all these guys that 'love' the simulators are simply trying to get a sound and feel like 50 year plus technology and they still cant get there. If you ask what is the 'key' features I could guess tone and feel of a tube amp. But I can buy a decent tube amp these days thanks to China for £450.00 that has exactly that. Of course I like you are aware of far more than that in simulators, but in basic form that is what makers are really trying to achieve... with added bells and whistles to make the product an option to buy. It's really all interesting stuff for sure.

    Hi Tony, thanks for yet another brilliant and thorough review. These bits of kit are becoming ever more sophisticated and their capabilities are immense. I've owned a few similar products in the past and enjoyed them briefly, but have always returned to my tube amps and simple pedal board (which does include 2 Boss pedals btw). I find when gigging I need about six core sounds and the capability to boost them for solos. That's it. So hours spent at home editing incredibly complex signal paths would be wasted on me. But I do appreciate the value of these products to other players. Hey now we're all in lockdown you could do some more reviews for our entertainment....Stay well, all the best

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Hey Cramster - you know what, that is almost exactly my personal views about this stuff. It does have a place for sure, but not necessarily as some might think. I doubt that the others out there are any different. There is simply too much to 'be bothered with' IMO simply because I only needed three or four tones when playing live or in a band situation. I have owned the Kemper since the end of 2011 and tried almost all the other equipment out there and they all have exactly the same issues (some are very complex and that exacerbates the problem further). Interesting gear for sure and I might keep this one for my 'collection' and occasional use - it does have a few useful things going on even in the pre-sets unmodified. There's also the mountain of IR's out there - so many no one could ever listen to them all. It seemed to me like a 'fad' that they all jumped on and are trying to sell their 'better ones' to guys that probably don't even need them. While they do change the tone of course, there has to be a limit to the untold hours that a guitarist would spend reviewing IR's surely. Great post and stay safe.

    I'm curious why you cal Impulse Responses a "flavor of the month"?
    While they have only been integrated into guitar equipment for the past 6 - 8 years, they have been around a long time.
    I also haven't heard of any processes or technology that is a more affective way to model a guitar speaker and cabinet.
    Am I mistaken about this?

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  2 года назад +2

      Well I guess there are so many impulse responses (check out the 'god' IRs of over 4000 for free on the net) that not only could you have the 'flavour of the month' but the flavour of the hour :) - of course it gets crazy and no one (not even a Fractal Audio user) will check all the IR's out there. Frankly I think it's a smokescreen for customers and later users because it becomes pretty meaningless overall. So the 'flavour of the month' - well that's rather like heaven only having to listen to 'one' a month :) On the second point there will be no doubt that someone will come up with something... but bear this in mind that all an IR really is, is a filter... great points Travis and thanks for watching.

Of course later they solved all of that - but only for the guys that got 'free' or 'loan' units from them. No such luck for me I bought mine and suffered... I created as I said over 50% of the video and when I could not proceed I could have thrown it through the window! However, undeterred I kept the unit for some time and it has some very good sounds in it there is no doubt and all for a pretty low price too. So I think its not bad. It lacks the amps etc. that this Boss unit has but its 2/3 the price! so nothing to complain about really. I bought a Helix rack remember so I don't mind the Helix effects (basically the same) at all. Some (generally FA fans) have been rude as usual and criticized Line6 - well I guess they would when competition is half the price or less. It cost 400$ I’ve heard may comparisons between the Gt 1000 core, I thought the amps sounded far better on IR 200, however it has no built in effects son now I’m thinking of buying this and pairing them up, The question is can you turn the amplifier section off on the GT 1000 and just use the FX so that I can pair it with the I R 200. I love your videos and I love the way you break down equipment and show people how good or bad things are made. I steered away from the Friedman junior amp because of some of the silicone issues. They are both interesting effects etc. While I did not like the original GT-1000 (I really wanted to) the GT-1000CORE firmware was a reflection of upgrades that could not really be ignored. I thought that the GE-300 needed both software packages being integrated in to one great solution but it was not. Also assigning the wah pedal was 'weird' and the GE-300 is just about the only unit that I had to assign a button to turn it on or off on any device I have seen. I never got used to that. So, although in my reviews the GE-300 had a better score, I would get the GT-1000 instead... it has better hardware quality for sure and has improved. But the GE-300 is exceptional value. I know, it might not help you, but best if you can try both and you will fall to one or the other quickly. Thanks for asking.

    I’m commenting in February 2024. I’m this far away from trying to get a GT-1000 Core. Taking all the pros and cons into consideration, the main thing that will likely bring me buyer’s remorse won’t be the lack of pedal switching (if all the essential switching can be assigned to pedals plugged into those assignable inputs. It’ll be that it doesn’t have a battery pack. If I can live with that, I can live with all its other physical limitations.
    My quest from the early 2000s has been emulating the sound created by the members of Boston on their sophomore album, *Don’t Look Back.* I could send my stomp box (which does a stellar job of duplicating that Plexi tone with midrange boost) into Core’s effects send, but I hope that approximating that sound from inside the unit itself could be done, especially after recently having heard an example of someone having hit on it with a Line 6 Flextone III set to a Mesa Boogie model.
    My present Boss modeler is an ME-80. I only wish there was a way for that to function as a foot switch for the Core. That would almost negate the need to get any external pedals for the control ins.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  5 месяцев назад +2

      Firstly, any MIDI controller could work for switching of course... as for the rest of the post I really can't advise about the tone being what you need or not. You know it might sound different to you than me. I like the GT-1000CORE (and STILL have mine!) for a number of reasons but one of them is the (up to) 26 blocks in the audio path and that can allow lots to go on - unlikely you'll run out for a preset. Some brand units allow as few as 9 blocks and can be limiting so you do have to look careful at those specs. You might find the tones exactly what you need so if you get a chance try one - or buy one with the ability to return it if its not quite what you need. Hope my comments help a bit and thanks for watching.

      Well it's not really a bad unit actually. But my experience with the GT-1000 when it first came out was very different. When I reviewed it back then the software was not good and neither were the sounds... to me it was horrible... but that really IMO says don't buy the early ones.. of course they update and that is why this GT-1000CORE got liked a bit better. And I can tell you on these you can have up to 24 slots for pedals etc. Some are fixed, but there are around 16 that are for any content near enough. And that's why I STILL have this Core unit. The others of recent times are generally around 11 slots for effects etc. and some of those are fixed. That sort of thing makes the unit less flexible IMO and certainly derived from less powerful solutions as processors. Although there is only one processor in the CORE the fact is, its a proprietary processor made by Roland/Boss and that changes things for the good. Maybe why the unit costs a little more. The track BTW is called 'Wild Turkey' and I wrote that back in about 1993 but never did anything with it after completing it. From about 1996 I started to write lots of music over three albums but this track just seemed to never get there on any of those :) so I used it for the backing on this... :) I have not looked at the Tech21 PSA (Here: www.hotroxuk.com/tech21-psa-2-0-programmable-preamp-pedal.html ) but I might - I always have time for that stuff... simple analogue settings you can touch :) and it probably sounds good too. - Love GT 1000 core's size and price point.
    - Love Neural Cortex's promising specs and UI based on nothing yet.
    What should I do? Any thoughts? (I can afford any of them, but I am definitely not rich 😆)
    Thank you in advance!

      Oh Sergio... there is so much gear in this sector for guitarists it is enough to spin heads for sure. For me right now the Neural Cortex is unknown (I have not used one), The Kemper product is probably the best sounding re amplifiers and tone but a bit less so on the effects, and this little CORE unit has excellent effects (as these Roland Boss units often do) but the amp simulator is not as good. However, if the size is unimportant and the funding is there personally I would watch for the NC forst, then consider that if its really good and if less so then the Kemper. I own a Kemper and its a very good sounding device, but as these all progress remember that their complexity does also increase. The Kemper today is far different than the unit I bought in January 2012. But equally general comment from me might be that while you (we) wait for the 'next best unit' to be available, it's like many things... the next wave of simulators on paper always seems somehow 'better' - but in reality it might not be quite the leap of technology that the makers will insist it is! Always try to find independent reviews whether average/poor/or good because they will show you generally a more true reflection of any product than what dealers/makers/fanboys or others will always suggest. These are all interesting products in their own way of course... but I'm still looking for even one that actually provides what they say it does on the tin. :) Walk and don't run ;-) but most of all stay safe.

      @@tonymckenziecom Hello Tony! First of all, thank you for your thorough and sincere answer. I really appreciate it and it has really helped me decide.
      I can't agree more with you. This is an ever-changing world we're at but sometimes things do not go as fast as they make us believe. That is exactly why I am quite reluctant about purchasing the Neural Cortex based only on what they have promised so far.

And I am sure I will get them, as Kemper's system has been going on for many years. There will always be time for a future upgrade or change to Neural should it be as good as they say.

    Very helpful. I wonder if you might be able to answer a user question for me! I'm hoping to use this live, and what I'd like to do is have a "global" amp. That is, even when changing patches, I'd like the same amp to be there (meaning tweaks to that amp would be reflected across all patches). My idea here is to replicate the traditional live experience (one amp) but add the ability to patch between banks of pedals. I haven't been able to confirm if this is possible. In other words, if I need to change the amp's tone or gain for example, I want that to be reflected across all patches. This type of feature would be ideal for many live players, I think! Basically unlimited pedal boards into one amp! I think this is one user option that many of these amp modeling pedals miss. Unless it's me that's not getting it! LOL Thanks again!

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      That really IS a good question. I did see a guy showing some stuff on the CORE and he was literally entering the same amp (or preset if you will) on multiple presets and storing them. He did not use the Live Sets (which I thought was a mistake). There are two things if I remember correctly that are overall settings and one is reverb and the other noise cancel. That was it from what I saw. But there is so much stuff I could be wrong. I would have thought (just my rambling!) that I would make live sets for each 'amp' (not really amp but you know what I mean) and then load them in to the presets before a gig. It certainly is not as good as the 'snapshots' in the Helix, but I don't know of any other way to even come near to what you need. If anyone else has an answer for you I hope they do post it here... its a great question - and I love to hear these sort of things because ha it certainly makes me think. And of course if you do find anything on this do post it back on here for others... its always a good idea. Great question. Sorry I don't have the answer to it though ... stay safe.

      @@tonymckenziecom Much appreciate the answer. I really think a "global amp" with banks/patches of different pedal arrays would make using these things live a better experience. I just can't go with the pre-programmed multiple banks/patches for each song approach. The first maker that figures this out will get my money. But for now, I've opted for the Pod Go. It has a global EQ, but that's about all I've found so far. I can't imagine this type of functionality being that hard to implement. A little software update should do the trick! Maybe someday. Meanwhile, keep up the great videos. Best!

      Well like I said on some of the Helix stuff they have 'snapshots' that could handle 8 per preset.... each snapshot can have different settings for everything. I never found anything quite the same on this CORE unit but it could be there somewhere. Indeed as you say they could update the software and it's a neat idea too... one I never really considered, but I'm with you on it as it could be very useful in some circumstance.

    Hi, thanks for your down to earth review! I have various low output valve amps. I also have a HX stomp & HX FX. I bought the GT1000 core this year and I'll be honest I found the unit to be a real pain in the ass, in comparison to the helix stuff. The computer interface is clunky and, for me, not intuitive. I agree with you on the usb input. They really should have put a usb c. It's faster. My HX units use the usb B and have an on off switch unlike the complete absence of that on the gt1000 core. Even in the instructions, online and manual sa "...switch the unit off (sic)..." What switch???? I'll be honest, I think I might have wasted my money. I'm thinking of selling it and using the money to buy a helix floor! I honestly rate this unit as maybe a 4 or 5 out of 10. I would also add, what's the deal with the volume of every patch? They're all so damn quiet! What I want in a unit is ease of use, not having to go through endless vague menus. It has put me right off. Don't get me wrong I have an old DS1, which sounds amazing. I have DD7 which rocks and the added function of hold, effectively a simple loop thing. I have a MT2 which again sounds amazing, particularly with lower tunings. It sounds awesome using my Squier 6!! I also the SY1. What I can do with that pedal is seriously fun. So, I'm not hating on Boss but I spent £550 for chrissakes!!!

      I have no argument on the Helix... I own a Helix rack and had the floor unit historically. They are very good no doubt. Ha tell me about the switch - its a pet hate these days as is some of the port choices/types. You know, I have looked at so many devices similar to the Boss GT1000CORE, but often many have one thing or another. Some advantages I found on this unit were the 24 (or was it 26) blocks that you can use - I have seen some with as low as just 9. The technology inside is pretty much better than many others that some even have older chips etc. and are sluggish at best. I do get your point and once you do compare to Line6 Helix that's a different ball game IMO too. As a load box, no complaints - it allows me for the first time to hear my amp pushed a bit, but at reasonable Paris apartment volume. I then used a single setting, rig 6, using cables to my patch bay, and into ProTools. Three tracks: C - rhythm, L - slide, R wah, each done in stereo. Then a handclap track. I would not say a pain but more not inspiring, with tone studio it is a breeze, kinda similar to axefx really but at least you can get somewhere with editing on the unit itself unlike the axefx lol The number of amps is limited compared to the competition but unlike the competition none sound like crap, you just need to dial it with you ears not with your expectations to sound like xyz real amp.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      Hi and thanks for watching. My opinion? Well, there is no doubt that the CORE is a reasonably good unit and well made etc. It all comes down to a few things and one was the 'power' of the unit to handle many components of the sound. You're right the CORE does have substantial power and that is a major advantage IMO over the Pod Go. Having said that, the Pod Go is also a pretty reasonable piece of gear. My advice is to try them both out. What suits one guy might not suit the next. I would consider the style of music you play when making the choice. Fort example if you're a rock player then you NEED decent rock tones. Some of this gear has wonderful cleans and crunch (maybe) but when it comes back to those rock tones many simulators fall down no matter what anyone says. Fan boys will tell you different. I own a Helix rack and have owned/used/tried near enough all of the different brands out there. Some are ridiculously complex, others sound good but also expensive. Most sound better at some tones than others. In my case price for price I bought the Helix rack even though I own a Kemper. Why? well, the rock tones from the Helix and bearing in mind the price had better tones than the GT-1000. The CORE sounds are same/similar to the GT-1000. But coming down to these two which one? You need careful consideration about every aspect and not least the cost. Quality build (Roland), Power (Roland), clean tones (Roland), more rocky tone quality (Line6). Add whatever else you might think :) You have to try them yourself! Stay safe and whatever you get do let me know what it was and why you chose what you did!

    Spot on Tony!! This design suffers the same short cummings as the AXE FM3, Helix Stomp etc... Packing a unit with so many features with only three switches makes no sense to me. I briefly had the FM3, while loving some of the sounds adding one of the FC controllers was going to be a must just to access features. One you set pedal up with dedicate tap button and tuner button it becomes unusable for live use, trying to hit double buttons in the middle of a song can end up BAD. The music industry sure seems to be "monkey see monkey do" with BOSS/Roland showing up late to the dance. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see one of these companies think outside the box and create a BIG floor unit (even larger than the helix or headrush) I for one would love to see it!! By the time you add extra midi pedals, expression pedals, volume pedals and other effects pedals you end up with a very large board. Tone studio needs a massive update! I have used it with the GT1000 & GP-10, it felt sterile and incomplete. For gosh sakes Roland BOSS add some eye candy to your software, take a page from Positive Grid. Lastly why no color screen? Same type of mono color screen reminiscent from the GR-55.

      Honestly Bryan I have looked at so many of these types of bits of gear I can't remember and would myself have to go back and check the video. However, out of many of these 'similar' devices I have kept this one - and that says an awful lot really. It has some nice features... a little bit more expensive but I'll put up with that for decent results that you can get from this one. No on or off is a pain as is the 'old' i/o port. Thanks for the post and for watching.

    I took my Boss Pocket Gt back as it wouldn;t work with my DAW ,sure it had some great sounds ,then I got the GT-1 and it's ok but not for me.Someone slagged you off on the Long & McQuade site where they left reviews ,just saying. Where Boss suffers is the distortions many are far too scratchy sounding!

    • @tonymckenziecom

      Every brand has some issue re tones of these types of products no matter what anyone says... I have seen them near enough all. As for some worm on some site 'slagging me off' to be honest, I have heard and seen most of it all since 2009 posting on here and I don't care what they do. Their problem as it were, actually drives others to watch my 370+ videos of reviews. If some little worm does do that from time to time, I always refer any viewers back to the 'little worms' own contribution to reviews they make... and generally its nothing, zilch, nowt... so what you end up with is a 'little worm' with a big mouth... sometimes driven by their inability to understand whatever product they are a 'fanboy' of still has its own problems. Thanks....

Currently cheapest is £762 from 'holy dog water' somewhere in the UK. For that £172.00 difference you would have to REALLY want the CORE because of size limitations. Stay safe.

    The gain amps in it sound just like the GT1000 when I had it-synthetic and square waveish.
    I like the effects, but the gain amps in it sound synthetic. I think giving it a 7 was too generous of you.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +1

      The sounds on this at test time were much better than the ORIGINAL GT-1000 and its firmware. I reviewed that some while back and was not at all happy with that unit. The hardware was great, and the sounds were not once any type of driven tone was introduced. This CORE unit is improved over the sounds I had from the GT-1000 absolutely and I would expect that. It's NOT a tube amp and I rated he unit as such, where there is compromise in the control of this unit, where the interface used an old standard for the midi and of course where the driven tones were clearly acceptable, but not comparable to a real tube amp in either tone or contrary to what Roland Boss say regarding feel with the AIRD approach. Some will agree and some will disagree, but I did try hard to show the benefits of this unit too because it does have some. a 7 was about right though. Good points from you BTW and I tend to agree with you but the score was reasonable. Thanks, stay safe and have a great Christmas.

    Sir! I don't know why you don't have a ground strap wrapped around your wrist or your ankle, but for SMT technology, it isn't safe for the unit to be opened like that without having A grounded strap connected to earth ground and back to you(wrist or ankle) The life span and reliability of that unit is now unknown and unpredictable...
    I happen to be an Electronic Technician that deals With SMT/TH technology and trouble shooting these types of PCB's on a daily bases...

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад +2

      No I get that of course after being in the technology stuff since 1981 when circuitry was far more prone to static issues. Indeed, we have the straps etc. all at work for the gear we work on and we handle tens of thousands of devices per year. Scarily, (and honestly!) I have never seen any device of the last very many years damaged with static - but I know it can happen. Of course I 'should' have the strap and grounding going on, but have never damaged a single item in the 350 reviews I have carried out since the last ten years or any of the other stuff on my website since the early 2000's. Maybe just some people are more susceptible to creating the static that zaps the stuff but I have not had that problem personally. I have had people also tell me about not handling vacuum tubes with my bare hands because of the 'oils' and damage will ensue. Unfortunately that has not been the case either. But you are right to point out the strap etc. and great point. Thanks for watching... and stay safe.

      I'd suggest getting an in-line remote power switch. I use one with a switch unit made by Furman that powers up my pedalboard and amp at the same time. It would very easy to set one up for the GT Core along with some monitors, or stand-alone as well. It'll save wear and tear on the power connector and alleviate the need to move the unit as well for many people. It really is a sad thing that Boss goes cheap and doesn't include a $2.00 switch, and slight cost increase in circuit board engineering and case machining, on a $600.00 unit.

    Regarding your comment about Macs catering to becoming obsolete, who wants to own the same computer for 10 years? After 6 years or so, just sell your machine and upgrade. Why keep holding on to old technology? Check your pocket. How old is that mobile phone?

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom  3 года назад

      Ha clearly an Apple user!. Well I have to say this. I have been a Samsung user of mobile phones since Apple screwed me in a nasty way on an iPhone 7 series. However, I have recently gone back over to the dark side... yes I bought an Apple iPhone. But not for the reasons that most would. I bought it because they are now actively trying to tame rubbish like Facebook and any others that simply want to steal your data. Whether that is successful we shall see, but I recently checked my 'Google' data which topped out at 790Gb of data on me! Yes I DID say Gigabytes. As far as PC's go I have been involved with those since the 8088 back in about 1983 so I have more experience with PC's and Apple than I care to bother with here, but overall the PC won that fight a very long time back when Apple was only used for printers. Apple remain by far in the minority when it comes down to computers. Sorry about that but its a fact. Thanks for watching Greg and regarding Apple and some others I would take what I said with a pinch of salt if you know better, and not if you don't :). And stay safe my friend.
