I got Nancy and there aren't a lot of African American Nancy's, so I'm very exited to play her!
EDIT: Our last show was this past Sunday and it was amazing! I cried when I was singing As Long as He Needs Me and also at the reprise. I was blessed to be a part of the show!

Nice :D there was a non-musical version of Nancy a few years on the BBC or Channel 4, can't remember which as they were on quite close together :) Did you see the show "I'd Do Anything?" It was also on the BBC, and was like an "Oliver XFactor", they were looking for three Olivers and a Nancy for the West End. One of the finalists was black.
I hope the show went well though, and crying during Needs Me is great, I bet you moved the audience :D especially the Reprise, I've always thought that was more heartfelt, as it went from "he hits me but I love him" in the first to "I MUST save Oliver but Bill will kill me if he knows"
      Sorry for the ramble!

Radagast Same! The girl who played Fagin (we had a female Fagin, as we only have Freshmen and Sophomores in our school (it was founded last year) and we don't have a lot of boys in Theatre) told me that I should cry more during the first one, but I explained what you said to her and she understood. And don't be sorry for the rambling! I love talking about Oliver! I think I'm addicted to it 😅 I'm watching the 2005 movie now.

I’m playing Dodger in a production of Oliver right now, and some actors in the cast have the audacity to say it’s a bad song and that it’s repetitive.

Just how is it that I still get goosebumps or chills down the spine everytime I witness the Consider Yourself sequence from this impeccably staged revival? The choreography overall in this production was incredible, as are the late William David Brohn's orchestrations. The 2024 West End / Chichester Festival production is great already, but THIS tops it.

Was my first show back in 1974 when I was 9. I then went to the SCPA school a couple years later, was in the production of Oliver at 12. I am now 55 & over the past 40 plus years I have been involved with this musical too many times to count. My children have even been in it. Once this dang pandemic end, I plan to direct it at our local theater. Can’t get enough Oliver!

To the comments about it being illegal and why record . Not everyone has the money to travel to London and see these shows. Also when they do tour they rarely have the original stars in them. They should record them and sell the DVD if they don't want pirate copies. Maybe transmit to cinema live if they don't want to record . I say thank you if they keep thinking London is the centre of the world and keep the show exclusive to them

One of the great things about growing up in California in the 60's was that London hits, before they went to Broadway, would have shakedown performances in CA. I saw "Oliver" with Clive Revill and Georgia Brown. And the Artful Dodger was played by Davy Jones who was great but somehow didn't make it to Broadway (probably because he got drafted for the Monkees.)

That’s interesting. Martin Horsey who was the very first Artful Dodger in 1960 sang in a church choir. At least the souvenir brochure for Oliver! I bought on eBay says so.
Some of the boys who played in Oliver! at Drury Lane (the production this video is from) were choristers too: Laurence Jeffcoatte, Harry Stott, Edward Birchinall (He became head chorister in Ely Cathedral Choir), Alexander Hockaday, Tyler Fagan, Jack Costello, Adam Hargreaves, possibly also James Donaghey and Harry Child.

Yes, it's funny but none of this was in the original show. Just a bit over-indulgent on the actor's part. Bill Sikes doesn't make his first appearance (in the original) until the second act, and in my opinion this new scene kind of dampens the impact of that. Excuse my purist sensibilities, but why mess around with perfection?

Interesting Oliver! facts: The original London production of 1960 is notable for featuring Australian satirist Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everidge) in his first major stage role as Mr Sowerberry, and future rock stars Steve Marriott (later the lead singer of the Small Faces and Humble Pie), Davy Jones (later star of the Monkees) and Phil Collins (of Genesis fame) as The Artful Dodger.
Oliver! composer Lionel Bart hummed the melodies and the music was transcribed by Eric Rogers who wrote the notes on his behalf as Bart could not read or write music. Rogers wrote and composed 21 scores for the British Carry On comedy films, the world's longest series of comedy feature films.

Cameron Mackintosh is preparing a new production of Oliver! in London. Unfortunately, the Artful Dodger is supposed to be played by a 17-year-old actor. What a terrible idea! I very much doubt that he will be able to sing the notes as they were written.
